  1. Proxies are really meant (not to bypass things) to be a form of allowing companies to get multiple computers online. It's something to the effect of phone lines. They may have one line (say 1-800-111-1111) but then there are many branches off of this in the form of ... I can't think of the name right now but the extra couple digits it then asks for.For their PC's, setting up a proxy server allows them to communicate certain things across the Internet but not others depending on the PC, and also allows them to connect to certain ones.If everything was run in an intranet it wouldn't make a difference but when some programs and whatnot are hosted remotely via the Internet the IP's can cause complications.Think about how it communicates information. You send a request and it sends the information back to you based on your IP.Now if two or more people are using the same program and are asking for the same information it will send all of that to all of them. By using a proxy you can offset a small number that distinguishes one PC from another.
  2. My own personal opinion is that it really takes "digitalizing" too far. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea... It's just... I think it is more of a momento to have the actual pictures instead of letting something pixalate for you. There's just a different feeling to me.
  3. I've started getting into C++ programming again as a hobby. I don't have a lot of time to work on anything but I've found I can use it to write programs to help out with my Physics homework. Afterall, if I'm able to write a program to separate vectors into X-components and Y-components that means I understand the work well.I've looked a little into games and how to create those but I'm not quite that far yet.
  4. Yeah, this one's right. If I remember right Google themselves even said meta tags have nothing to do with your inclusion/where you rank in their system. They said it is content only. But I'm wondering if this is just something they're saying to throw people off...
  5. Thanks for the information Echo. I'm getting close to where I need to renew as well and your first post made me worry that we were going to have to pay for renewals, .
  6. I agree with a previous post saying 300 million users doesn't mean 300 million *active* users. Although 300 million is still quite a few.I am also willing to bet that includes all of the spammer accounts.
  7. I have had sites listed in under 24 hours and others that take weeks. The best plan is to get a high pagerank site to link to yours because it shows Google your other site is "popular."Doing that (as long as the referring page is PR4 or higher) you can usually get listed within 24 hours even without submitting anything.
  8. I honestly see nothing wrong with it. It's her life so it's her choice. If she feels like sleeping around makes her happy, so-be-it. People need to quit letting "socially acceptable" terms dictate their actions. Just because it's not "socially accepted" doesn't make it wrong.
  9. That's a crazy tablet, lol. Both sides usable... I can't quite figure out a real use for it, but the fact that tablets are becoming more and more "available" is great news. I have the feeling soon we'll be able to find tablet PC's as cheap as normal laptops (I've been researching tablets and even as of lately, 2 gb's of ram and 1.6 ghz cpu will run $900+).
  10. Nothing will work to end piracy. The whole point behind pirates and their reasoning for allowing people to download things they crack is that things should be free. Whether it's 1 cent or $10 million doesn't matter. "Information should not be charged for" is the view. Therefore, as long as there are still charges, there will always be pirates. Not to mention it's funny how free things always end up better than paid versions. Open source allows the *smart* people to work on creating and implementing features. There are a *lot* of free open source projects that are starting to take over mainstream markets now.
  11. I get over 1000 (yes, literally, over a thousand) spam emails a day. Just set up a filter and you'll have absolutely 0 problems. I don't even have one spam email pass my filter and yet I don't lose any emails either. So it's not an issue, .
  12. Anyone willing to toss me an invite as well?rpgsearcherz@gmail.com is my email addressI've been interested in this for a while but wasn't sure where to go about asking for a Lockerz invite. Didn't think about Trap as a source (weird, huh?).Anyways, if anyone's willing to toss me an invite it would be much appreciated. And I'll then share invites with others as well.
  13. At some points I'll use both sites. Both of them are really very different so you can get two takes to the same question. I wouldn't really bar myself to either Xisto or Xisto, and instead just use them in conjunction with one another.
  14. An alternative is to use two versions:1) Open Source with good featuresand then2) A closed source "premium" version with better featuresThis seems to be the more mainstream way of doing it these days. I'm finding more and more programs with both a free and paid version as of lately.
  15. In terms of the networking, I haven't messed with it yet. I only upgraded one of our PC's to Windows 7 because I won't fully "trust" it until I've used it extensively without issues. But this network thing it has internal is quite interesting... It's supposed to automate the entire networking process, including networking printers and other devices. Along with this, the internal CD burning wizard is a lot better than the one in XP. You can burn "Flash-like" dvd's or CD's (where you can copy/paste/edit/etc. files on the CD/DVD itself if it's rewritable, instead of having to burn/erase/burn/erase). To test that out I made files, edited them, made new folders, transferred files from one folder to another, etc. and then took the disc straight out and tried it out in an XP system - 0 flaws at all with it. As for your lack of considering Vista an upgrade, I still to this day consider it a downgrade. In fact, when I bought my last PC from HP and I was talking to customer support I had to get XP drivers and they asked why I don't put the original Vista back on it. My reply: "I am *upgrading* to Windows XP." To me, Vista was worse than XP in almost every possible way. Windows 7 may prove to be failsauce in the future (near or far), but as of right now I've had no issues.
  16. Maybe something along the lines of psychicdevelopment.com? I'm too lazy to go try out different domains in an "availability checker" right now but I wanted to add that I'm quite interested in seeing how your site goes along. When you get it off the ground (even if it is in Alpha/Beta stage) I would definitely be interested in checking it out to see what you have come up with (more or less information wise).Just make sure you leave Area 51 out of it. Area 51 has nothing to do with aliens. It is named that because military naming sections land off by "areas." The fact that area is "Area 51" is solely because it is between areas 50 and 52. Along with this, it is a "secret base" but it's for testing new military planes, .
  17. If I was to look for Psychic Phonomena.. It would really depend on exactly what it is I was looking for. Are we talking about like ghosts/"other world experiences" or is it different?I prefer to, instead of going just based on one keyword or two on searches to lock down many. I base mine on the various sections of the site rather than the site itself (or the site's name).
  18. I haven't used XP virtualization yet as I haven't had a need to. Only one program had issues and it was just because I accidentally unplugged my external drive while running the program. When that happened it failed to run and Win 7 automatically decided in the future it will try XP virtualization on it to help make it work better. As for it being limited to different versions, I'm unsure. Also, about Ultimate and Professional, I think the big changes are in the "safety" of it. You should be able to pull that information up pretty easily on Microsoft's website though. Just search for "Windows 7 version comparisons" or something like that.
  19. I would definitely read a lot of reviews of the host before going with them. There have been hosts I was with for 5+ months where everything went great for me and then I started having the same issues others had already written about prior. One thing I can tell you for sure is most free sites are more than good enough for flat-file site hosting. The issues almost always come in when you are doing heavy PHP/SQL on your site (for example, forums or CMS's).Both of those also have flat-file versions, so that's really not an issue. So really it all boils down to what you want to use the host for:1) Are you looking for something reliable? If so, don't use them.2) Are you going to use a lot of PHP/SQL? If so, and the site is going to be *live*, it is not suggested to use them.3) The domain/subdomain thing is not an issue at all. You can use CPanel to link up a domain you purchased elsewhere.4) If you are just testing various things or are starting out fresh, I would suggest to use them for that purpose. Even with PHP/SQL, there aren't a lot of issues as long as there aren't many visitors.
  20. I'll be honest about the user groups - I don't really pay attention to them anyways. I don't care who is an Admin, Mod, regular user, hosted user, etc.To me, we are all the same and we are all here for the same reasons. If anything, the only group I feel we should have is one for "leeches," the people who do nothing but spam us asking "how do I get our hosting?" or "this site here is better, it doesn't require posting! link here" and things like that. People should be here because they want to be here. The hosting is just a side-benefit of being part of the community.
  21. I would say that the total graphics being loaded on a main page (I say main because sub-pages can have disclaimers to allow visitors to know ahead of time they are graphically intensive) would be around 400 KB. This includes everything needed to load it - text, graphics, background, etc.Keeping it at around that speed helps dial-up users because many people do not want to wait forever to load. At 400 KB's it should take a dial-up user around 10 seconds to load which is already cutting it quite close.
  22. Both of the top answers are "yes." You own the domain and therefore as long as you are paying for it you retain ownership. As for how long it is actively in your account (your MyCents), they have no expiration as far as I know.
  23. That's actually a very good question. Based on my preliminary research (before I tried Win 7) it supposedly runs better on older systems as well. But I'm not sure "how old." For my personal usage, I have every setting on the highest, including 3d backgrounds that change every 10 seconds, transparent taskbar, transparent screens, and everything else. Even with all of that running, I'm at around 600 MB's of ram used up. (This also includes Java, IE, and everything else I have running right now). So really I'm not sure about it being good with 512 MB's but with 1 GB you should be more than fine. Even running some MMORPG's I've been at 1 gb and below. I think you can still download the beta for free if you would like to test it that way. That's what I did because I was ready to reformat again anyways (to clean out my system) so I decided if it sucked I would just reinstall XP again. It's really hard to judge other people's PC's because there are just so many factors: HDD speed/free space CPU speed/clock speed MB speed RAM amount/speed Video Card ram/speed/type And some other factors. The best thing I can really say is to give it a try if you can for free and then make your decision based on that. I think XP is really still okay for most things, especially as I was still using it up until recently. I'm just loving the new look of 7 and how everything is organized.
  24. Free hosts should cover everything you need and a lot, lot more. The reason is that the only time you would really need to upgrade is if you were getting so many hits the server couldn't handle them all. In that case, you would need to upgrade to a VPS or dedicated server anyways, so it's not an issue. I use free hosts still for testing out various projects before I put them live on my site(s). It allows me to fully experiment with the entire hosts "home folder" without worrying about destroying my forwarding or anything on my real host.
  25. I completely understand how you feel. I've put in many applications now to "companies" on CraigsList and most of them send you to "Complete surveys to earn $150 an hour!" sites and stuff like that.
