  1. What you're talking about is known as an include - taking the contents of one page/file and displaying them within another. This can be accomplished in HTML with the following code: <!--#include virtual="file.html" --> You will then need to rename the original page with the extension .shtml for the include to work. Hope that helps.
  2. I can access your site just fine. Is this error now OK for you? That error is caused where you send some data to the browser, then try to modify the headers of the page. Before data is sent, the headers have to be sent, and cannot be changed after data has started being sent. You'll need to look through the code to see if anything is outputted to the browser before the headers are changed. If you've recently modified any code, revert to an earlier backup to resolve the problem.
  3. Your request will be reviewed by one of our GFX Crew or members.
  4. A post of only a couple of words does break the rules (posts are generally supposed to be well written and of a length to add something). Any post with a referral link also breaks the rules. Some try to get around the rules by posting a link to a site or blog filled with referral links. If that is their only post then I tend to get rid of those too, because it is obvious they are spamming. Anything you see that looks like spam, anything illegal or just anything you want us to take a look at - send a report, and we do our best to deal with them as soon as possible. Moderator approval and a post-count limit would both work, and I think they are both fairly easy to implement. However they both have their downsides. Moderator approval places a delay on legitimate posts, and a post-count limit could block new users who want to post something that isn't spam.
  5. Mod-rewrite is definitely available, as I use it on many of my sites. The PHP version is 5.2.5, so meets your 5+ requirement.JSON is enabled, version 1.2.1.Curl is also enabled.Hope that helps
  6. All you seem to be doing is importing a JavaScript file? So why can't that line be changed to just: <script type="text/javascript" src="scripts/script.js" /> That would be valid and work perfectly fine. I'm not sure where you got the line you are using now, or why it's like that, but it doesn't make much sense and is causing hundreds of errors. I've also never seen those "_wpro" attributes before, and they are not part of any standard. The logo looks a lot better now - less dominating over the screen, but still noticeable.
  7. Microsoft has lost a colossal percentage of the browser market to Firefox recently, especially in Europe and Australia. Firefox has also been very successful in promoting not just their own browser, but the general fact that people have alternatives to Internet Explorer. Presumably Microsoft is also pushing IE very strongly because I believe they have integrated their Bing search with it, and that draws in revenue. was something fairly close to my initial reaction. Claiming that IE is the only browser to offer security is just ridiculous! Each of the points where IE "wins" are entirely biased decisions. IE draws where measurements and proper testing are involved. There are also plenty of areas not mentioned where other browsers beat IE hands down. They also seem to still be pushing the idea that IE is "more compatible" with the Internet and most websites. Well, if Microsoft had bothered to follow the standards in the first place, this wouldn't really be an issue. Still, nice to see they've finally decided to follow the standards for CSS2 - only 11 years after they were released...
  8. 208 errors from the validator: validator.w3.org Fix them or take the logo off There is a slight bug with the RSS logo on the right hand side. Before you hover over the logo, you can see the white version displayed below the orange version. If you are going to use the sprite-style backgrounds then you will need to limit the height of the container for that image so the second version isn't displayed at the same time. Alternatively, flip the image around so the white version is above the orange one, and change the CSS accordingly. The Firefox logo is also massive compared to pretty much everything else on the site! I'd shrink it down because at the moment it dominates the screen when you have scrolled down the page. Other than that, an excellent design. Great work.
  9. That has nothing to do with Microsoft or with Windows XP. That will work on pretty much any computer so long as they have some form of telnet command installed.
  10. Sign up at this page: https://support.xisto.com/ using the same email address you use for the forums. This links your accounts so that you can earn myCENTs and also allows you to look at all the different plans and customisations by clicking on the Order section. Each of the plans can be customised to suit your needs and how many myCENTs you have.

    Lynx

I still use it now quite a bit Especially on sites that insist on being made entirely in Flash. I just don't like them, and Lynx forces them to display a default HTML version. If they don't have one then I get to complain and baffle them with my use of Lynx  I can't really say much for the look and feel, but it is certainly more secure than any of today's other browsers.
  12. The Entry and Exit columns describe how many people entered your site on that page (Entry) and how many left your site at that page (Exit). So, if the first page someone sees of your site is page1.htm then that page's Entry counter will increase. If the last page they look at it page5.htm (and then they go off to another website) then that page's Exit counter will increase. So, your statistics show that 42 people went to that ZIP file before seeing any other page of your site, and for 40 people it was the last page they saw before going off to another website, or closing their browser.
  13. The Hosted group was used to show members who were hosted under the old Credits system. It just didn't get removed when we switched over to myCENTs, and doesn't really mean anything now - some people have it and aren't hosted, and plenty of people are hosted now but don't have that group.
  14. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO): The process of editing a website with the specific purpose of making it appear higher up in search engines. This can involve many different changes to a site, from very basic things to drastic structural changes. Some companies use it in an attempt to appear higher than their competitors in search results. Outsourcing: Not doing it yourself. Normally used when a company asks another company to perform a task for them (ie. sourcing people/services from outside the company). So, for example, a company may outsource the staff to clean its offices from a cleaning company, rather than having their own cleaning staff. Combine the two and SEO outsourcing means getting someone else to do your SEO.
  15. Into a Flash file? I have no idea. If all you are doing is displaying a video, why not embed the video in a standard format, like Ogg Theora, so everyone can see it in their browser anyway? The new HTML 5 standards give the ways to display the video correctly.
  16. Do you mean the large spaces between the words next to the picture? They're caused by setting the text to be justified. The maximum number of words are put on each line, then space expanded between them til they all fill exactly the same width, giving a defined column size (like you see in newspapers). The easy way to fix it is to change the text alignment to left aligned, but without seeing the CSS I can't tell you exactly how to do that.
  17. Sorry, my mistake. The Post Office are still covered by Ofcom for their Internet and phone services, so I'd still ring Ofcom and ask for their advice. If anything you will be able to complain about the Post Office's behaviour and handling of their mistake at least, and prompt an official response from them. No, but you are responsible for making sure you pay them. You can both argue who is responsible for it, and you both have a point. It will eventually come down to the small print of your original contract with the Post Office. If it mentions the Post Office being required to send you a bill every month, and they haven't, then I don't think they have any right to demand the money now. If, however, it says you are responsible for alerting them to any problems, which you haven't done, then they can claim you are responsible. Depending on how far you want to pursue this, speaking to your local Citizen's Advice Bureau or a solicitor could help you at least determine whether that bill stands.
  18. I think the error is slightly misleading, and should probably be telling you that you are limited on the number of links you can put in a post. It sound's like you've been putting a lot of links in that post, and that has triggered the limit. The limit exists to stop spammers making posts that just contain thousands of links. The solution is just to reduce the number of links in the post unfortunately. Edit: Well, I've tried and I don't seem able to hit the limit (after 500 links I got bored of adding more and assumed you wouldn't have reached 500 anyway...) so either it doesn't exist and we have some other problem, or it is disabled for moderators.
  19. Yeah, we have to pay interest, but the interest rate is tied to inflation. As we are currently in a recession, the interest rate is either 0% or negative at the moment Basically you end up paying back exactly what you borrowed, but adjusted for inflation. I don't believe the company running the student loans makes a profit, and they're government backed.
  20. So they didn't charge you for a whole year? Did you not notice? Did you try to contact them and tell them you weren't receiving a bill, and that you hadn't paid? To be honest you should really have noticed and informed BT rather than just carrying on without paying.Your best approach will likely be to contact Ofcom (their phone number is 020 7981 3040) to ask for their advice, as regulator of the broadband market.
  21. I can't see what the problem is... I can see the five links (Home, Forums, etc.) below the banner, which I believe is what you were trying to achieve? There is a small gap between the bottom of the banner and the horizontal menu, but other than that I see no problems (apart from using tables for layout ).
  22. For those interested, here is a rollable silicone keyboard: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I've personally never used one, but one of my mates got one a while back. He loves it because it's a lot softer and quieter than a normal keyboard. I don't think I'd be happy with one. I think because they're flat on the desk, your wrists would start to ache after a while, and you can't prop the keyboard up at the back like you can with a normal one. But I am fairly picky about my keyboards - give me an IBM Model M any day
  23. The values are decided on the content and quality of the post by a script written by OpaQue. Only he knows exactly how it works, mainly to stop people exploiting it, but also to give him an air of mystery Generally, writing a longer post with good structure, correct use of punctuation, BBCodes and that sort of thing will earn you more than a short post written in a trashy style. Also, there are some forums that don't earn myCENTs (marked as having no post count) where, obviously, you don't earn myCENTs for your posts.
  24. Looking at the listing of CUPS packages, I think this is the one it should be looking for: You can most likely install it yourself by downloading that file and installing it manually (I think you can just right click and hit Install, I know you can on Kubuntu). That should hopefully get rid of the request for an update, but it may no longer keep you automatically up-to-date for that package.
  25. Correct. The myCENT system has now completely replaced the old credit system. Under the new myCENT system, you don't need to make a post to request a domain or hosting, hence why the last post was in 2008. The whole process is now controlled at the billing website: https://support.xisto.com/ Your myCENTs are sent straight to your billing account when you earn a whole dollar (ie. individual cents aren't transferred until they make up 100). From there you buy your domain or hosting, and choose to pay with myCENTs at the end of the process. The amount is then deducted from the myCENTs you have earned. I believe there is still a screening process in place (your posts are checked to make sure you don't post thousands of spam posts, earn loads of myCENTs for effectively nothing, and then try to spend them) but not like there was before, and it requires no action on your part. It does introduce a delay of a couple of days between placing an order for a domain and it actually being created for you, so bear this in mind.
