  1. They really did that? Wow! I personally feel that those organizations which are more concerned about animals than people, are for those who don't really know the world they live in. And these NGOs tend to be joined by upper class people, silly young girls who want to do something to make the world a better place to live and put their energies in this kind of things that don't question the political or economical statu quo at all. I mean, I don't like hurting animals and all that but come on! Let me give you an example that's really exasperating. In my country, Uruguay, some people still use horses for garbage collection. This isn't a State policy, but the local government of the capital city (where I live) lets some people, really poor people, check dumpsters on the street and take what they think they could sell (metal, plastic, wood, cardboard) or in the worst cases, what they can eat (the food people throws). This is the reality. The thing is that some people make their living of what they can find in other people's garbage, and they usually carry what they collect in a cart drawn by a horse (like in this pic). So what do you think environment and animal rights organizations complain about? If if thought that they complain about the poor health conditions of those who do this, you were wrong. If you thought they complain about children being involved in these activities, you were wrong too. They care about how these recyclers treat their horses. Yes, they care more about the animals than the 5 year old children who sometimes go with their parents getting inside the dumpsters. Believe it or not.
  2. Your request has been more than a month here, so maybe I'm a bit late, but I can help you for free, however I would need more details. For example, how is what you want your posts to look like (each single post), how do you want the posts page to look (the one which shows the last posts, or the featured ones... usually the homepage). You can use WordPress as a simple CMS, with more advanced functions than a blog. What is more, I could help you with designing a theme, but maybe you can use one of one of some already made themes which let you configure almost anything you want from the admin panel, which should be faster. For example, Atahualpa or Suffusion. Anyway, reply or drop me a line by PM if you still need help, I'll be more often here on KS from now on.
  3. I don't like Apple devices, and I don't own one. In fact, the only thing I've ever liked from Apple was their operative system, Mac OS X (which by the way, got a new update these days). I've seen it installed in computers and it works charmingly. But for cellphones and music players, I prefer good ole Nokia... and considering recent improvements in those devices, if I had to choose one of those trendy, touchscreen smartphones, I'd buy one with Android, which is open source. But I'm not crazy about them. So I can't understand how people may become fans of a company! I really don't. However, besides their marketing techniques don't work on me, I can't say that the way they conduct business is terrible. Check what the Economist's figures say: That is just regarding the iPhone. I don't know their profits in computers but iTunes is the business of the century. That's why I think that they know what business is about, no matter if I like their designing styles or not.
  4. Sorry if I arrive a couple of days late... but I have another suggestion too. If you already tried the solution presented by shadowx, which is very good, I hope you had luck. If you hadn't yet, you may also try with GParted. GParted is "the Gnome Partition Editor", which allows you to graphically manage your disks partitions. You can boot it from a CD or USB key like any live distro to manipulate your partitions in emergency cases like this. I used it once, although it wasn't to fix a partition table, just for installing Windows after having installed Debian. Anyway, you can use GParted to "attempt data rescue from lost partitions", at least their website says. I must admit that it's not a feature of this application that I've ever used, but you can try, I don't think you may lose anything. You can check their help manual, here's the link to the section for data rescuing. Good luck in any case!
  5. You're right! Catch me if you can, The Aviator, this one... Anyway, you should let these movies move you so drammatically...

I've read a few posts of the things that xisto has been recently doing wrong, like sh*tty support... what's going on?

and the site is full of spam, especially the blogs I think. there must be some honest post in that section, but I haven't found one yet, all the blog posts I've checked were written by users who didn't have ONE post in the forums...

exactly... we don't need the blog section. It's not like opaque listens to any of his users anyway, though.

  7. Facebook's insistence on setting it as my homepage is pissing me off

  8. I googled it with scroogle.org which is some like an anonymous google so that my location (Uruguay) doesn't affect the results, and I got KS homepage first, your post second and third the forums portal, but onlinecheapo is #86!I guess it's pretty strange, but I must say that I don't see much effort from Xisto admins or Xisto to make the forums more visible. In fact, the site ranks #218 in Google for the keyword "free hosting", and it doesn't even appear in msn, Yahoo! or Ask first 200 results. It's not listed in the great site of Free-Webhosts.com, which is the site where I found about Xisto, but as such website doesn't exist anymore, they don't have it in their rankings. How is the site going to grow if nobody can find it?I think guys like you and some others who keep logging in every day and try to post, so that the forums don't fall in ostracism, you do a huge job. But many like me, from time to time, get bored. I try to come back and give my opinion when there's interesting debate but like I think that more people posting would give more dynamism to the site. What can we do? The admins don't seem to be here often, and I read the other day on another topic that it's getting harder and harder for moderators to block spam (I even reported some posts, which I hadn't in years). So back to the point... is there anything that we can do to promote the site?Sorry if I went awfully off-topic, but hey, if this post has to be edited, it's ok.
  9. I have Win 7 in my laptop and it works pretty smooth. It doesn't have those errors I get with my dad's computer running Vista and Aero is quite polished. I love the how buttons are ordered now on the taskbar as well as the new functionality of right-clicking on one of them and open a recent file or location... which I use mostly to open Firefox in the site I like, be it email or facebook. Also the gaming is pretty good and I managed to run some software that supposedly required a better graphic card than the Intel GMA HD that came bundled with my laptop. The only bad thing is that I still haven't found a good, secure software that could read Linux partitions, which I would like to have installed before I install Debian.
  10. I basically heard two opinions of Inception among my friends, one is that it has quite a complex meaning that it really makes you doubt about what is reality; and the other is that it has such a complex meaning that they couldn't understand it. Honestly, I saw it and I think it was not the big deal. This film is pretty eye-catching... ok, your eyes are glued to the screen most of the time and the effects ... well, the Academy Awards talk for themselves. But the message... mmm, I believe it's all part of the marketing that they began to roll and people bought it. The idea of the plot is original, I agree, but the fact that its position on solipsism (the idea that nothing exists outside our mind) isn't quite clear is what I don't like of the ending, particularly because it's a film that talks about solipsism and about the distinguishing the boundaries of what is real and what is not. Anyway, I'm not going to talk about that ending, because it's not a bad film after all, though not a comedy one to pass the time either.
  11. This is my desktop -- been a long time since I last posted in the forums and I wanted to start with the new laptop I got a couple months ago.
  12. And then they say doing sports is healthy! Nah, bad joke. But it's really strange, isn't it? I mean, did it really happen? It sounds too odd to be true. How can a golf ball make a spark?
  13. Goal for 2011: be more involved in KS...

  14. My father's laptop has the same problem. It has Windows Vista installed and the battery icon says "plugged in, not charging" (actually it says "conectado, sin cargar" because it's in Spanish...)I tried uninstalling and reinstalling ACPI driver, as Iniyila suggested, but it didn't work. I had read that recommendation somewhere else so I tried. It seems to fix the problem for lots of people but it wasn't my case.I also read in other sites that I should upgrade the BIOS, but I've also heard that doing that is highly risky, so I didn't try... The problem is that if I want to buy a new battery it costs like 190 dollars here in Uruguay, because it has to be imported I don't know from where.I hope you could suggest me some other solution, because it's quite a lot to spend on a notebook that has little more than a year.
  15. went to see the pixies in montevideo the other day
