  1. Most CMSs have extensive documentation and tutorials available for making your own themes/skins/templates/whatever for that CMS. Most also have a large variety of pre-made themes you can download if you want to use one of those. However, some are easier to work with than others, so before you pick which CMS to go with, make sure you check out how to theme it and whether you think you would be able to learn how. If you want to switch from a CMS to normal HTML files you make yourself then that is easy - delete the CMS's files and database, and upload your files in its place. However, removing the CMS means you lose all the content you put in to the site! So, you'd have to be very careful to make sure you copy and pasted anything you'd written or uploaded to the CMS into pages on your new site. To be honest, I can't see why people would make this move - a CMS makes things much easier as your site grows.
  2. I have never tried it, but I don't see why not. phpMyAdmin just asks for the same SQL stuff as any other script, so can access the database. Like I say, never tried it, but it's free so you've nothing to lose by trying it out.
  3. How long has it been like that? They only get converted once every 24 hours, so if you've earned them all in the last 24 hours then you'll need to wait for a while for them to transfer. Also, did you change your email address either at the forums or in your billing account? If so, they won't be linked any more. You'll need to send a ticket to support asking them to link the two again with your new email address.
  4. Generally you can download them from their respective websites. The list I linked to earlier has links to each CMS's website on their pages, where you can download them and find out even more about them. When you get your hosting it includes Fantastico, which lets you install various scripts automatically, including CMSs. It includes the following CMSs: If you want a different one to those listed, you will need to install it yourself. Aptana looks like overkill for what you want. It's geared more towards people writing web applications in PHP and stuff, which you don't want to be doing right now. Try out one of the other ones I PM'd to you to see if they're better for you - remember they're all free!
  5. What domain name are you trying to use? If you let us know then we can try it and see if it is a problem with your computer and Internet connection, or a problem for everyone.
  6. A content management system is a set of scripts you use to basically 'run' your website for you. They have online editors for the pages and posts you make, downloadable themes for your website, etc. There are plenty of very popular ones depending on what you want to use your site for. If you look at this list of free CMS software then you can see screenshots of what they look like by default (although they can all be themed) and try out demos of how each one works, so you can see if you like them. They can be tricky to set up, but that only has to be done once - they're all very easy to use afterwards. Drop me a PM if you want me to set one up for you to try out A database holds all the information for a site using a CMS (such as users, posts, pages, etc.) in big tables which can easily be searched, manipulated, etc. to produce interesting results. They're faster than using flat text files, but can be trickier to set up to start with. A flat file system stores all that in plain text files. They're easier to work with, but slower to open so make your pages slower to load. Space = space to store all your files in, just like space on your hard drive or a USB pen drive or something Bandwidth = amount of content you can transfer in a given time (usually gigabytes per month). It doesn't limit the amount of people on the site, but limits how much can be downloaded from your site in a month. So, pages are generally small and don't make much of a dent in your bandwidth. Movies and music files are big, so lots of downloads can take a chunk from your bandwidth each month. Drag and drop normally works well. Once you have a site (if you make your own rather than using a CMS) then we can walk you through the process. It is the same as copying a file or folder on your computer, but using a special program to do it. NEVER! You'll get your site!
  7. How old is your laptop? The performance of batteries, especially if not cared for correctly, can degrade fairly quickly. You probably will have seen, before this happened, that the battery would only charge up to 90% then stop. Then it might only reach 80%, 70%, etc. until eventually it won't hold any charge. That process can take anything from a couple of months to a few years, but is obviously worse the older the battery is.If that is what has happened then your only choice is to buy a new battery. Depending on the age of your laptop, a new battery may well cost more than what the laptop is worth, so you might be better off buying a new laptop (although you probably won't be able to sell the old one if the battery doesn't work).
  8. I think it would be impossible to do that. Everyone is now in the same billing system, whether they use Xisto for their hosting or buy it from Xisto - Web Hosting with real cash. To integrate the forums with the account management wouldn't work because there's a very large number of people in the system who have never used the forums, and have no use for them.
  9. WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get Basically, a WYSYWIG editor lets you edit your pages as they will eventually appear, without having to do the code yourself.
  10. Yup. I think you can upgrade on your own, but downgrading requires sending a support ticket in. You can use a WYSIWYG editor like Dreamweaver or FrontPage to design your site and upload the files, but I don't think the Logic Plan has anything like that built in to it. If you're on monthly billing then you can stop at the end of each month (when you bill is due). If you're on yearly (or longer) billing then it only really makes sense to stop near to the end of the year (although you can stop any time if you really want to).

  12. I would recommend sending a ticket to Xisto - Support to check and make sure that it goes smoothly. You can change your email address, but I think they might have to change the one in your billing account - I can't quite remember. No harm in asking anyway.
  13. Do you have any suggestions for a new theme? Remember that everyone has different personal taste, so one thing to bear in mind is choosing a theme that most people will find OK. Also remember that, as far as I know, OpaQue has to do quite a bit of work to get each theme to work correctly with the various modifications he's made to the forum. Again, any specific suggestions or ideas in mind? To be honest there isn't a lot of 'new' stuff you can do with web hosting 57,000 members and over 400,000 posts makes the database quite large, and therefore slower than on a forum that is much smaller. However, I haven't really noticed any speed issues myself - it may well depend on geographic location or Internet connection, which are much harder to change or fix.
  14. I think the only way to achieve that is to do as those other sites are doing and install phpMyAdmin yourself on your hosting. This gives you control over more of the setup options, which you can't change on the version already installed in cPanel. However, I have never tried installing phpMyAdmin on the hosting here, so check the requirements first to make sure you can get it to run. https://www.phpmyadmin.net/
  15. The problem is not necessarily a lack of creativity, but a lack of inspiration. I sometimes have the same problem when designing websites, and the solution is to look around for inspiration. I have a collection of websites now that regularly post lists of well-designed sites, and I occasionally turn to them in moments of mental blocks to look for colours, design aspects and ideas. My girlfriend likes writing poetry, but had the same problem - so we set up a free poetry review/sharing website for people to get inspiration from, comment on poems, get criticisms and help, etc. Convincing yourself your ideas are stupid, wrong or just generally not very good is also a common problem - hence the need to get other people to look at what you're doing and tell you how other people see your work. I often ask other people to look at my web designs for their criticisms, and they're often very different to what I think. The same applies to art, poetry, creating writing, anything. Get your work out there and get other people to look at it, comment and criticise. Yes, some of what you do will actually be rubbish but you'll get help to improve it. Some stuff you do will be brilliant and you won't have noticed. Do the same for other people - let them know what you think of their work, and it will help you improve yours. I know this is cliched and not overly helpful, but you need to let it happen naturally. Keep a notebook nearby at home, work, when you go out, whatever. When you think of something, jot it down so it isn't forgotten. You can then look back over your ideas when you need them, throw out the useless ones and improve on the promising ones. And write everything down - even if it seems rubbish at the time, your perception of it can change with time, or it could be better out of its original context. Websites are slightly different as they have to be functional and offer something new. Websites geared towards your local population are always a good start, as you can directly target a market with something they need, and you already know quite a lot about the area. Alternatively, start a new service that you've always wanted to see, or something slightly improved on that already exists. Writing about what you know, like a hobby or skill, is always a good idea - expertise and passion always show through and help add to the credibility and usefulness of a site. You'd also be surprised just who does read your site, however unread you may believe it to be - I was amazed to be contacted by Vodafone after posting a rant about them on my blog that I thought no-one actually read!
  16. There is nothing that forces you to use Linux at all. However, just remember than in Linux all file names are case sensitive, so the path images/photo0001.jpg is not the same as images/Photo0001.JPG. This is a common problem people run into because Windows completely ignores the case of file and folder names, so pages appear to work fine on Windows and 'break' on Linux.
  17. For forums you have a few choices depending on how complex you want it to be, what features you need, etc. Check out the following for a few I've used and recommend: phpBB, AEF, punBB. As for a website "builder", are you looking for a CMS (something that you create and edit pages in online) or a piece of software you run on your machine that generates the code for you (like Dreamweaver or FrontPage)? If you want a piece of software, take a look at this list of free alternatives to FrontPage and Dreamweaver. If you want a CMS (content management system) then take a look at Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress and PHPNuke. Also check out this list of free CMS applications and this one of free forum applications if none of the ones I've mentioned take your fancy.

  22. I would say that this sort of surveillance certainly contravenes Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Making sure people are in their homes and bed at certain times could be brought under Article 13(1), although it is rather minor: The social and psychological effects of being monitored at home 24-7 could break Article 23: I know I would certainly not have free development of personality in that sort of situation. And, as the UK is in the EU, the European Convention on Human Rights applies. Article 8(1) states: It's a sense of privacy, and the fundamental principle of "innocent until proven guilty". The arguments from both sides run like this: "If you've nothing to hide, you won't mind being watched." "Well, if I've nothing to hide, you don't need to watch me." Ad infinitum... In other cultures, privacy is not such a big thing as it is in the UK, or at least it doesn't go as far as it does here. However, there are exceptions (such as Swiss banking laws, etc.). The thing that goes round in my head is would you want your conversations taped, recorded, monitored? Or you taking a shower? Having sex? Having an argument? Embarrassing conversations?
  23. Article: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Just... wow. I'm not quite sure what to really say about it, apart from "What's the quickest way to leave the country?". If anyone has read the novel (although I'm starting to think it's more non-fiction) 1984 by George Orwell, you'll notice startling identical features. Many government initiatives around the world are said to be Orwellian, or like 1984 but I don't think anything has been this obvious or close so far. Video monitoring in private homes? 'Private security guards' checking up on families? The state controlling daily activities and even your meals? Opinions?
  24. At the moment I am using Kopete, with accounts set up for Jabber, YIM, AIM, ICQ and MSN. Surprisingly, I do actually use all of them I don't really use any of the advanced features - I just use it to talk to people, which is all I need. I also have Skype set up, although that was mainly for when I didn't have a landline telephone.
  25. Back in February, Microsoft made a move to buy out Yahoo, and failed. Now they have reached a deal, but Microsoft hasn't bought out Yahoo. Instead they have decided to share revenue and effectively merge parts of the companies to compete against Google. Bing will replace the search technology at Yahoo, which should boost Bing's worldwide share to about 30% (Google's is about 65%). Yahoo will then be left to focus on media and selling advertising, but using Microsoft's technology. However, both sides appear to be worried about competition investigations both in the EU and US, and investigations related to privacy in the new deal, as search data will be shared between Microsoft and Yahoo. More information: http://adage.com/article/digital/microsoft-yahoo-google-search-deal/138177/ Should Google be worried by this latest deal? Are Yahoo users worried about losing Yahoo's search technology? Or will this deal be struck down by competition regulators?
