Dell Tech Support I just needed a small bit of info
michaelper22 replied to michaelper22's topic in General Discussion
I don't like Dell's support, not to put down India or anything, it sounded like I was speaking with a lady from India. I couldn't understand half of what she was saying, but in the end it didn't matter because I didn't get support from them. The truth of the matter is that I found the answer to my question, not problem, on the Dell Community Forums, after I performed a little bit of creative searching. This is just an indication that I won't buy Dell computers, due to their lack of advanced-user-friendlyness (meaning that they tailor their products to people who have rather limited knowledge about computers, for example, not telling you how to open the BIOS Setup, like in my case), and their annoying support services. (HP is also probably routed to a international place, but at least they give good help from my experience.) -
Most of the places that contain michaelper22 are forums that I registered on, since I use a universal usermane, I'm too lazy to make up new ones for every site I visit.michaelper22: about 439 (according to Google)There's only one site that contains michaelper22 that I didn't register on, and it's a prtyy funny page.

How Many Of You Are Out Of School Now?
michaelper22 replied to beeseven's topic in General Discussion
I finished school yesterday (Monday, June 12), but I have to go in next week; Sunday is the graduation and awards ceremony, Monday is the RCT in Writing (a standardized test given by NY State that supposedly is really easy, counts as part of the final exam grade), and Wednesday is the Living Environment Regents exam (a standardized test that counts as my final exam). Sunday ruins my plans, since I wanted to wake up late, but we are starting at 8:00, the usual Sunday time. -
Survived 9th Grade Sooo hard at first, then got easier
michaelper22 replied to michaelper22's topic in General Discussion
I am taking the basic New York State curriculum; this year I took Global History 1 (one more year of that), Math A (half a year left of that), english (finish that in 12th grade), biology (done this year), and computers (I have no clue when we're done). I don't even know what an honors lass really is; I'm just assuming tht it's 20 billion times harder than what I'm doing now. yeah, the seniors in my school are having a blast, only like 3 periods in the whole day; the rest of us have five periods. -
Yes i did say that. Anyway, I solved the problem. You can open the Bios Setup through the F2 key, just press it multiple times durin startup (before windows loads), and you will hear a beep, then the bios setup program will oad. I found this on the Dell community Forums, after doing a little creative searching.

My aunt gave me her old laptop, and I want to reinstall Windows on it. For sarters, the DVD-ROM drive is not first in the boot order. So I need to open the BIOS Setup program to change it. I tried pressing about half a dozen key combos, and couldn't get it to run. I called Dell, and they gave me some garbage, saying that I would have to pay to get help. So I come here, to ask you, how does one open the BIOS Setup program on a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop?

Survived 9th Grade Sooo hard at first, then got easier

I bet you are correct. I got homework that could easily get finished within the allotted amount of time (usually about a week, for say, a chapter in the social studies book), yet I spend my nights on the computer, and push off the homework until the last night (and sometimes don't finish it until the class before, which you can get away with when you have a particular teacher in my school). But really, my school was easy once I got used to it (remember that I kept the chair warm in 7th and 8th grades, meaning that I didn't do homework, therefore didn't know much material, therefore didn't pass tests....you know the rest), then it was much easier for me. My social studies teacher tgot me into the work habit, because he was the devil (not literally, he's a cool guy)who assigned monsterous amounts of work throughout the year. -
It's now June, and yesterday was my last day of school (well, the last real day, Regents days and the graduation ceremony don't count). I managed to survive this whole year, and learned how to do a ton of homework in short periods of time in the process. It was a difficult year for me, but I survived. I'm looking forward as well as being anxious for what's going to happen next year: two new principals (one we met, the other still a mystery), possible construction on the building, more Regents to study for, and some other stuff too. They should hand out T-shirts that say "I survived 9th grade!".

I don't really know whether we should have a chat or not, but it I would recommend the Flash123 chat. It defenitely looks nice, and feature rich. I wonder how much it would cost, but I am sure that if OpaQue wanted a chat he would find a way.

Do You Use Blogger? Vote In The Poll
michaelper22 replied to rlineker's topic in Websites and Web Designing
This will sound strange, but I have 2 blogs set up on Blogger, and I haven't touched them since last year. I am not a person who blogs, I just can't write a blog like all these people do. I can barely manage to keep up with my schoolwork (even though I manage to get good grades in most subjects), let alone writing a blog. -
My school isn't corrupt, but they are a little 'chaep' when it comes to somethings (ex. the laptops that we use for computer class were stored in one of those metal cabinets, and someone broke off one of the doors, and the cabinet hasn't been replaced since). There are some kids who get away with anything (not stuff that dmamges the school, I am one of those people), and some kids who get in trouble for some little things. But overall, my school is nice.

I like vBulletin's front-end interface, but I have no clue on anything related to administration of it. The Mamboserver.com Forum uses vBulletin. I like the tons of AJAX that they stuck into it (Quick Reply, Editing, although IPB has that too). I also like the built in Reason for editing field in the post edit screen, much easier than the Edit tag mod for SMF.

Punishment For Repeat Dui Offenders
michaelper22 replied to Madkat-Z's topic in Science and Technology
If you want to keep DUI offenders from drinking, you might as well ban alcohol period. It's a pointless thing to do, since there is virtually no enforcement for that type of law. It's not hard to get alcohol if you really want it. In New York State, there is this point system on your license. If you get a certain number of points, they take away your license. I also think that there are special laws regarding DUIs ands stuff like that, since NY State does take this kinda stuff seriously (the Zero Tolerance law). -
Ok, so I got my aunt's old Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop. She also gave me a wireless card with it, but I had to promise her that I wouldn't connect to the Net until I reinstalled Windows. I needed to open the BIOS Setup program to change the boot order of the DVD-ROM drive, but I just couldn't figure out how (even hitting Fn+F1, where F1 is marked setup, didn't work, and I tried about half a dozen other key combonations, which also failed to work). So this morning I called Dell, with hopes of getting my problem solved. The crazy lady whose accent I couldn't really decipher made me tell her all sorts of stuff, about transferring of ownership from my aunt to me, my express service code, and all sorts of other garbage before telling me that I need to pony up the plastic to get this fixed (in other words, they are charging me for them to tell me how to open the BIOS Setup program). So I come here, to tell you about Dell's screwed up support policy, and to ask for help. How do you open the BIOS Setup program on a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop? Why won't Dell reveal the secret for free?

Godaddy Domains For $ .79 thats right, 79 cents
michaelper22 replied to Blacklaser's topic in Websites and Web Designing
If I had a credit card I would defenitely do this, but I'm just a cash-strapped teenager. In the meantime, 1&1 domains aren't terribly expensive, and you get some othe nice features with them also. -
I use a mix of SmartFTP (yet another one) and cPanel. For me neither is more efficient than the other, aside from the fact that with cPanel I can't overwrite files sometimes. Yes, SmartFTP is a wonderful program, especially considering that it's free (and I'm vey cheap, I'm a teenager with no income).

The Best Content Management On Cpanel
michaelper22 replied to lil_chris's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I'm sorry hayri, but Mambo is in fact built on PHP and MySQL, exactly the same as PHP Nuke. I like and use Mambo for a production site, and I can tell you that it's a little bit inflexible (unless you are a developer and are willing to write your own components and such), but is very powerful and easy to use after the first couple of weeks or so. I love the ease and reliability of adding new functionality to it, whether it be through modules or components (unlike in SMF where mod installation can really go haywire, that's another story considering that SMF is a forum not a CMS). WordPress is actually a blogging tool, although you can make nice other types of web sites with it. Intstalling plugins and themes is a bit different from Mambo (it invloves FTPing or otherwise uploading a directory to your server), but WordPress is nevetheless pretty easy to use (it even won a spot in this year's PC World Top 100 list). -
I've tried defragmenting my hard drive in he past, and there were no noticable speed increases. Ever since, I have given up on defragging (although that was in the days of Windows 98, things may have changed in XP). As far as defragging floppies, there is no point, especially since floppies are almost extinct (I would have to pay for it if I wanted a floppy drive in my machine).

Good job Maine, for such an excellent forum. I'm proud to announce that Maine, as well as two other prominent Xisto members (myself and Albus Dumbleore) are admins over at Forumize - I deal with SMF stuff, and I don't know what Albus does but he's also good too lol . So come on over and join, and get whatever help you need with your forum (assuming it's something we can handle - not bugs in your software, etc.).

I have to agree with this. I once found a piece of software (no names) that I liked, and there was a free license available for it. Ever since, I have lost the installation file for it after getting a new computer, and also wanted some paid features. I admit it, I got a cracked code for it (once again, no names), and applied it. I ony did that because I don't have nearly enough money to buy the application, it currently goes for $299, which is a ton of money in Mikey-land (I'm sure S_M is in his own little world too, ). That makes the $70 for IPB look worthwhile. @Gaea: I have yet to find text confirming this on Adobe's web site. If you could find one, please send me a link to that page that you found that info on.

I saw that too. It's not surprising that Ubuntu is such great software, because it combines the best of open source software. It evens runs lickety split on my aging HP with an AMD K6 (it's now 8 years old oh my gosh!). I oredered a bunch of their CDs - they shipped across the world pretty quickly. Open source software like Ubuntu is ideal for the advanced home user who is just sick of windows (I am sort of, but I also live on it).

I can't wait to see how many (how few rather) hardware manufacturers will adopt this format. I don't see what is wrong with the current JPEG spec, I certainly find nothing wrong with it. The next thing we will need is for the Linux world to adopt it; the possibilities of Micro$**t (kidding) passing on the secrets of WMP[hoto] are slim to none. *smiles and makes an evil laugh*

My Huge Software Download Site
michaelper22 replied to Brian Gillingham's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Now I noticed that the filtering tools work properly, correctly seperating freeware apps from the, well, non-free apps. good job on your site, and I hope it becomes a big success. -
I think I understand what the problem is.When you get your domain, you can do three things. 1) You can change the DNS settings of the domain to point to the Xisto nameservers. 2) You can forward the domain to your current Xisto subdomain. 3) You can change the nameservers of the domain and add a Parked Domain to your account in cPanel.Rememeber that if you choose option #1, right before you change to your domain, you should change the settings for your forum to reflect the new domain. This invloves editing the config file for the forum software.

Windows Vista: The Next Os? Will it be?
michaelper22 replied to wild20's topic in Science and Technology
I am positive that Vista will have the new Aero theme in time for its holiday season release, as well as the Gadgets and defenitely IE7. It's nice to see that Micro$oft decided to put tabs into IE (finally). But I wouldn't think that Vista will be significantly cheaper - especially the higher end ersions, like Vista Ultimate (or whaever the heck they call it).
