  1. Adding that info to cPanel would take some work, because cPanel and the forum use different database systems, and writing the necessary code for that and merging it with the skin isn't exaclty child's play.
  2. That version of IPB is no longer supported, and not available for legal download anymore. Plus it's not any near as spiffy as IPB 2.x series versions. As BuffaloHELP mentioned above, SMF is a good alternative - even from the end-users view (meaning the forum part, not the admin console), it's more powerful, providing more features than phpBB (from my experience). But as he said, SMF doesn't have a ton of mods; although if you know PHP it's not terribly hard to make one.
  3. 1) The installer included with your distribution will partiotion your hard disk for you. Be sure to tell it not to erase any existing partitions. 2) Your distro might not have the new enough drivers required for your hardware. I would think right now that the only way to solve that is to wait until a distro version with later drivers comes out
  4. A while ago I experimented with a replacement shell, and I couldn't figure out how to get out of it. But that was then (when I used Windows ME, that piece of trash). Even today, I don't find anything wrong with the real Windows XP shell, it's enough for me, and is supported by Microsoft, not that their support is the greatest.
  5. This is my neatened up desk. Notice the relocation of my monitor (thank G-d for LCDs). Pay no attention to the messy closet behind it (it's been overflowing since we moved in), or Albus's and my sigs currently showing on my monitor. Here's some of the stuff that was previously on my desk, now either pending disposal (arrgh, to the incinerater) or storage.
  6. I looked at the Windows Live Ideas page today, and noted A) the new looks (which are mostly insignificant) and the new projects. They released a couple of desktop applications, namely Windows Live Writer, and Windows Live Mail Desktop (both carrying the Beta tag). Live Writer is a blogging tool, and it allows you to write posts from your desktop with WYSIWYG editing. Microsoft says it works with Live Spaces, Blogger and a bunch of others, but I have yet to verify that. Windows Live Mail Desktop is a modified version of Microsoft Outlook Express, looking vaguley similar to the Windows live Mail site. It works pretty well, but has the same annoyances as OE, including that status box that sometimes gives you errors and no solutions to them. I won't consider using this product full time, but it's pretty nice, to say the least. However, both of these apps are taking away from the Live (or Web 2.0) idea: They deliver the information to your desktop, not the browser. Web 2.0 is supposed to place emphasis on the info itself, not the platform it's running on. Designing a platform for information delivery is counter-intuitive to this project. Edit: Added Windows in topic title
  7. When I got the invitatation from Google that faithful day, I was really happy - all those weeks of waiting paid off. I got used to the new interface resonably quickly, and started using Gmail full time, only checking my Hotmail once in a while, just to keep it alive (that account has since been migrated to Windows Live Mail). O love Gmail and I will use it for as long as it exists.
  8. Unless you upload miscellaneous files, your forum gets a lot of traffic, or there are many posts on your forum, the the second level package here (with 150 MB disk space and 5 GB bandwidth) should be enough. Each post is stored as plain text in the MySQL database which uses up not a ton of space; but installing lots of mods or having many other files will use up your space. Worst comes to worst, you could sign up for even one of the cheapest paid plans, which will provide you with sufficient storage.
  9. As mentioned above, desktops will be around for quite a while. They have power and expandability unmatched by notebooks. And maybe some people don't want to have a relatively small machine for other reasons - take some Media Center PCs, specifically those in a set-top style case, whic fit nicely in the living room - in that case the desktop PC is king. And remember that laptops have either limited power or limited battery life - the use of desktop processors in notebooks (which has been done) will chug battery life rapidly. Even todays powerful notbook chips don't outperform even some medium-end desktop chips.
  10. Let me describe my suggested change. 1. The Xisto header can remain as is. It's a low-bandwidth-friendly design element. 2. On theleft side of the page, there should be a simple menu of all the tasks that can be accomplished. It doesn't have to have fancy rollover effects; just a simple list of links. 3. Sign in page - when you go to https://support.xisto.com/, you should see a sign in form for the whole site there, instead of requesting the username and password at each individual task page. A sign out link would be included on each page, and cookies/sessions would be used to track signins.
  11. You have an interesting setup Albus - don't you find it annoying to move your stuff every night?Seing some of these pictures inspired me to clean up my place a bt; I'll post a new photo later today (I'm not at home right now).
  12. PC World discussed cell phone privacy in a Privacy Watch column once. They say that before you sell or give away your phone, you should reset it to clear out your personal info. The reset command for your phone can be really long and complicated, usually invloving pressing buttons in a specific sequence. You can find the reset commands at The Cell Phone Data Eraser Page (at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/), where instructions are listed for many phones.
  13. In New York City, there are plenty of seemingly retarded drivers. For instance, take your average one-way street in Kew Gardens Hills (in Queens), and partner that with and idiot who just double parked, especially when there is an available parking spot about 5 feet away. Next, look at Lexington Avenue (in Manhattan), where there are buses, and the billions of taxi drivers who drive at something around 20 MPH, when even buses go faster than that (when they are moving of course; there are M103 stops like every two blocks). In simple terms, Don't drive in Manhattan.
  14. I have seen these scripts before; they are totally useless in any browser other than IE. With these "other browsers", you can very easily disable changing of right click actions. In short, there are very few (but still some existant) ways to secure your source code.
  15. We don't really have this problem because here in NYC, all (or most) of our buses are air-conditioned. But on school buses i have seen the little gutters; they effectively keep the water from dripping inside, and I wouldn't think they block out the following driver's vision.
  16. You can get a GTalk profile field mod for SMF from the SMF mods site. As far as this goes for other forums, this would more likely be accomplished through mods rather than implementation by the forum developers. And there is a Google Talk userbar available at userbars.com.
  17. I played paintball once, and it wasn't much fun to me. That's not to say that I hate paintball, but it's just not for me. Maybe the fact that it was raining that day contributed to my lack of enjoyment. Most of the time, I was on defense, and I only shot out a few people. (I was hiding behind a split tree in one game, and someone thought the tree was shooting at him!) My idea of adrenaline is skiing, but that's for another topic.
  18. I spend almost all of my time at the computer (some of it should be spent doing more important things like homework). I am a computer addict; I can't really focus my thoughts on many things other than computers (OK, fine, I can think about buses too). It annoys me, because in the summer when I'm in camp, there are no computers (well, the ones in the office don't count), and the whole time I'm like, "I need a computer!" Practically my whole day surrounds the almighty computer.
  19. This is my desk; it's quite messy. I don't really use half the stuff that's on it, and I've been living in a dump for a long time anyways, so I'm used to it. The extremely small size of my room contributes to the cause of the mess. This is just my computer, with the Zip drive sitting on top of it (gathering dust, I don't remember the last time I used it ). BTW, I'm really impressed with your workk area Maine; it's really simple and organized. Nice mousepad (the Photoshop book).
  20. There are two shoutbox mods for SMF that I know of, Ultimate Shoutbox, and SMF Shoutbox. From what I've seen the sMF Shoutbox mod has more features, but I never got it to install. If the auto-scroll thing in Ultimate Shoutbox is annoying, go to Features and Options (Edit Features and Options in 1.0.x), and find the settings for Shoutbox; uncheck Enable Scrolling. That will keep things still. Hope this helped; if you need more help, drop me a PM - I'm pretty good with SMF.
  21. In general, default templates look Ok, but are a tad plain. At the minimum, change the logo to your own.I would add more topics, because I know there are a lot more languages out there. Ask your current members to contribute to the forum's content, so that you will have a mechanism to attract potential members. And, as mentioned above, build a page - it doesn't even have to be som complex - that shows when you access just http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/.
  22. I agree on that first statement. I run Linux, and doing things that can be done in a few clicks in Windows can take many more steps in Linux (specifically SuSE Linux 9.1 Professional). Installing software in Windows is always a point and click process; installing RPMs from the terminal invloves memorizing those arcane parameters for the rpm command. Maybe I would have a more positive opinion is my computer was faster, but that's my problem. And yes, Windows is convinient, and it's a bit more than universal. Almost any task can be accomplished rather quickly. And you can't beat the software selection.
  23. I know that my suggestions are purely unnecessary, they may improve the image of the Hosting account Center (all of the pages under https://support.xisto.com/). I thought that a few changes could be made to the design and function of those pages: -Provide a login common to all pages - instead of typing your username and password at each task page, have users log in upon the access of https://support.xisto.com/, and present a task list. -Beautify the pages a wee bit - add a bit of layout, and add some design elements - even just a banner similar to the one at the forums will do. These are just recommendations - the current interface is not "broken", it's jst not the best I feel it could be. But then again, that's just my opinion.
  24. I checked out the TeamSpeak web site, and the installation packages there look like they need root access to install, as opposed to just being normal PHP scrpits. Once I read the description of the application on the site, it sounded like this was a full-blown app server.
