Even though my school didn't ask me to do this, I made a site for them (no, I'm not hosting it for them, I made it and maintain it by myself). I made it with Mambo, and I might be migrating it to Joomla. I chose a nice clean template, and the logo in the header was designed by my school. The address is: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

I'm not really into graphics, but I would like to enter an SOTW competition with my current sig. The only problem is that it doesn't fit into any SOTW categories - past or current. I would like a chance to win something, and I'm sure that others would too. What I am looking for in short is an SOTW where there is no 'topic,' just a chance for any member who made a decent sig to join the contest one or twice.

'site Of The Month' And 'general Discussions'
michaelper22 replied to electron's topic in Web Hosting Support
I agree that the General Discussion section should be placed at the top, directly under General. Actually, the current General forum should be changed to Support, and General Discussion should be directly on top, with Support following it. As far as Site of the Month goes, methinks that it's a smashing (or swell, or whatever good word describes it) idea. I would like to be reconized for something (is my sig somewhat impressive?). -
Ror Ruby on Rails for friends... :P
michaelper22 replied to sasuki's topic in Science and Technology
This seems like a nice Web applications framework, but honestly, I think it is waaaaaaaaaay to complicated. You have to have like 5 million (exaggerating) files to make a simple page that says "Hello World", which would take just one line in PHP. Since ROR is new, there aren't many prebuilt applications for it like there are for PHP. So I'll tjust stick with whatever little PHP editing I do. -
Saint-michael Job S Bust! their loss :( :(
michaelper22 replied to Saint_Michael's topic in General Discussion
Good luck s_m!you are my favoite evil mod! Anyway, the place you applied to sounds nice, the fact that it's in Vermont means that it should be a nice place ( I am a New Yorker). From what you tell us you seem to have a good resum? (had to add the accented e), and I hope you get the job. -
Try adding a big, prominent link in your sig. Include like one or two small details about your forum. Maybe try something like this (an example using my site): The Bus Stop Computers and NYC Transit at your fingertips Register now! Something like that may get you some more members (and this post may help me out as well, I only have about 10 members).

I have another good one. This is Computer Associates' eTrust EZ Antivirus. It uses little memory from what I knwo, it doesn't cause system meltdowns like McAffee does, and it's relatively cheap. I don't use it my self now, but I know several who do, and recommend it for those who need an easy antivirus product.

I don't what google meant by putting that clause in the Program Policies, but I woudn't think that it matters whether it's on your own computer or throughout the Google service. I say this because thet prohibit framing of the Gmail site, which would be available to any Gmail user. don't count on me 100%, but even if I used Firefox as my main browser, I wouldn't do this. for all you know Google could come after you someday. If you want the real scoop on this I would suggest emailing or calling (if possible) google.

My Huge Software Download Site
michaelper22 replied to Brian Gillingham's topic in Websites and Web Designing
OK, I see button for picking to view freeware and paidware, but when I click one of those links, I see downloads in all categories, not the one I was currently viewing. As I mentioned earlier, I like Download.com's filtering tools. -
Actually, there are more than three: And probably more in addition. I probably would want Windows Vista Business. It's the most similar to XP Pro, which I use and could possibly support in a business environment. It has Aero, which I sort of like, and all the other mouth-watering features I would ever need. I would perfer it because I want more fine-grained control over my system (security, policies, and other stuff), whcih the lesser versions probably don't provide.

Yes, it is installed. I can tell you this because I use it for nice looking permalinks on my WordPress blog. You can use it for whatever purpose you need.

Unfortunately for us, this only works in Firefox as far as I know. I tried it in Netscape 7.2, and it didn't work. I wouldn't think that it would work in IE anyway, just because of the way IE works, ie. its different architecture. Also, I think that doing this may be against the Gmail TOS. Let me find the text for you.... So that would lead me to think that you can't do that. Sorry folks.

I have a relatively good record on Xisto - just one topic got locked.I never copied Web content onto a forum as long as I remember. I almost always play by the rules. This reminds me of 7th and 8th grade, where I almost never did homewok, and took the consequenses. If I do something against the rules online, I accept the punishment (I never got punished, to tell you the truth - no system warnings ever recieved, only verbal warnings). But I have never in all my days of being part of a forum plagiarized for posts.

School's Blocking System. Its not the smartest of things
michaelper22 replied to Blue Lightning's topic in General Discussion
My old school didn't have internet access for the kids, but for the office, they had what they claim is strict filtering. I don't know the details, but it probably wasn't some enterprise solution. I bet it was something like a Norton internet suite, with whatever content filtering it has turned on. My current school also doesn't either provide us with Net access, but I would appreciate it. -
My Huge Software Download Site
michaelper22 replied to Brian Gillingham's topic in Websites and Web Designing
It looks pretty nice. I see you have a decent size collection of software, but I can't tell how much of it is free. A feature recommendation: At the bottom or top of each category page, add filtering options similar to Download.com (OS, license, Size, etc.) That will help bring you more traffic as far as I can tell. I will defenitely visit your site again. -
I'll do this tomorrow, and I'll post any updates or problems here.

I'm in school from 7:25 AM to 6:10 PM Monday to Wednesday, 7:25 to 8:00 Thursday, 7:25 to 12:30 (during daylight savings; during standard, it's until 12:00) Friday, and 7:50 to 1:00 on Sunday. Now just keep in mind that I go to a religious, private school, with really messed up hours. There's little explanation behind it. As far as how I am doing, I am OK, little social interaction, doing most of my work, not eating much. The teacher's think of me as a good student, and my classmates say I have no life (and what's worse is that I'm starting o agree with them.

I normally sleep from about 10:30/11:00 PM to 6:30 AM, so figure about 7-7 1/2 hours. It's not enough sleep for me, and I'm only 14. I come into class feeling exhausted, and frequently put my head down. I need either more caffine or more sleep.

Announcing The Google Pack for WinXP only
michaelper22 replied to serverph's topic in Search Engines
Before I give my opinion on Google's Pack, I must state one thing: being a limited user (in other words, not being an administrator in Windows) stinks! But if I did have admin rights on this machine, I would run it for Google Talk (which I think updates itself anyway), Picasa, Google Earth (just to get the latest version, I already have it, great program), Google Desktop (although I may never use it), and one or two other things. Google is great at giving out software, especially since it's mostly free. -
I added an addon domain to my account, and now it just doesn't show up. The thing with this is that I added the addon domain a long time ago (a few months ago), and it should show up. I went to add another addon domain recently, and I didn't notice the one that I had setup before. The domain (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) still functions normally when accessed, but the listing for it just doesn't show up in cPanel.

Hackers Get Mac Running Windows and Apple thought it cant be done...
michaelper22 replied to serverph's topic in Software
If anything, Boot Camp would only work on Intel powered Macs, like the new MacBook Pro. That's because Windows can only run natively on Intel-based platforms, and would need emulation software (which exists, Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac, for instance) to run on a PPC processor.
