I started with this great guide: http://linux.about.com/od/dist/gr/dstwubi.htm I started with it, but unfortunately never ended because of a lack of time . This will learn you how to administrate your linux pc. It might be that not every tool works because it's not installed, but don't worry too much about it (yet).

seems like there no reply coming from Irwan, maybe the computer burnt his hous down No, no, I'm just kiddin' Another useful tip to prevent dusty hsf's is to ad some dustfilters on the in- and outtake fans. It could be anything, like panty's, or gauze (the one you use to keep fly's outside), ...You'll only have to check them once in a while, because if you have a dusty house, it'll be stuffed in no time.

I can attest to bootvis' excellent help. When you first start it, you have to set it to "track" and do a reboot for it to get a look at what your computer does while it is booting. When that is done, it starts when windows starts and you can select "Optimize" and it'll change some settings (which I'm not sure) that will do good things for your boot time. It's actually no longer available from Microsoft's website, but you can download it at MajorGeeks.com. Here's a direct link to their download page. Also, Make sure you are running Ad-Aware and SpyBot Search and Destroy. Together these make the best way to combat the spyware that is most likely loading when Windows starts and eat up valuable resources while you're trying to do other things on your computer. 1064326789[/snapback] Be careful when using bootvis, M$ did not stop it's support for no reason. It even once screwed a fresh windows xp installation . Lucky it only took 15min to reinstall it (I just loooove those unatendet installs )

Graphics Card Specifically For Cad And Engineering
wutske replied to golgothurteen's topic in Software
You don't only need an über graphics card, but a good amount of memory. I know someone who runs Inventor on his home pc, it's just a simple computer, but it works. But on his work he has 4Gb of memory, wich is being used a lot, says enough I think .An other option is to look for quadro's/firegl's on ebay or other 2nd hand sites. -
2 small things, how can you expand in the repair console and do you work for M$ (because you know all those tweaks and settings)???

300% overclock ??? I don't think that's possible, not even with LN2 cooling (about -196°c), I realy want that link
-
djees, hard post to read Anyway, the "bruning" point is realy high, somewhere up to 200°c or something, but stability problems can occur when the cpu is at a certain temp (it depends on the cpu how much it can go above the recommended max. temp). As abhiram said, check you cpu fan, if it's running, then check how warm the heatsink realy is (when it's at "70°c").If you can't touch it, than it's realy too hot and you should get a new heatsink or fan.If not, than temp reading might be wrong OR the heatsink isn't properly installed (no heat is being move from cpu to heatsink).Other than that, you memory or hdd may be corrupted. You can check the memory by using Memtest68 and you hdd by using a tool from the hdd manufacturer (you can find it on their site).

for the low range I'd go for ATI, more bang for the bucks. But then (from the 6600GT's) nVidia takes the lead for me, all the way up to the 7800-series, espacialy in SLI.Tough, the new ATI's seem to be very powerfull, but they are still way behind with Crossfire (not that I have to money to get me an SLI/Crossfire setup, but still ...).

most interesting . It would be great for my laptop, but it only has an old, external , parallel cd-player

I don't know whether it works on such slow machines, but you can change the prefetch parameter in regedit. It realy helpes a lot on my system (the green bar on get 3/4 of the length instead of passing 3 times )open regedit (run>regedit)go to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParametersand change the key 'EnablePrefetcher' to 5.

Hosting Problems Too much downtime a loss of credits
wutske replied to wutske's topic in Web Hosting Support
I'm going to rewrite this part because of baaad english.(no post count, so doesn't realy matter). The problem is, yesterday (or the day before) I had 30 days/credits, but today, I only have 21 days left . I feel a litlle bit 'robbed' because I've lost my spare days and I do rely on them (I try to come here every 2 days, but just in case). This is much better english, isn't it (and sounds less mad/aggressive) -
I have 2 little problems. First is the uptime of my site. It's realy low. A few minutes ago, I could access my site, I changed a poll on it and suddenly the site was down again. I can't access anything, not even cpanel. I'm having this many times. I can access my site and suddenly it's down. I'm on panda btw and my site is http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/, running geeklog 3.11 and gallery 1.5rc1. The other problems is: how long are your days. 1-2 days ago I had 30days remaining and I have only 21 days left ??????? That's not funny, if you rely on it, go on vacation and you come back and your hosting has been removed Could you fix it, because I feel like I've been robbed (I 'earned' my 30 days of spare days, how would you feel if somebody took your vacation days )

I'd take skorv setup (if I'd had te money ) and change the swap the mobo with a DFI NF4-SLI mobo, 2Gb of TCCD memory (GSkill), 2 Raptors in RAID0 for apps and games and 2 200Gb HDD in RAID1 for data. Then I'd take a 3stage DD cooler for the CPU and chilled watercooling for the GPU's and NB and OC the hell out of the machine.Damn, that would be sooo sweet

Don't Overclock Your Notebook! instead, down-volt it

okay, but this is handy, because you don't need all that raw power to type a text in word.Another thing is that you can undervolt your cpuwhil it's running at max. speed. (Bad comparison, but anyway) My XP2500+ normaly runs @1.65V, but it has absolutely no problem when it's at 1.4v.So, you can save a bit of battery time by doing so. -
WMP10 all the way. I've had them all, WMP10, iTunes, WinAmp and Realplayer, none of them could beat WMP10.None works as smooth as WMP. It's fast, the lay-out is good, ...It's realy the only thing M$ can do good, WMP, WMA and WMV.

It'll be hard (and probably expensive) to find a 256Mb AGP card.I think you'll have to get a Radeon X800 series or nV6800 series card. But I don't know why your friends say that 128Mb isn't enough ? Most games can run on a 128Mb vid card, maybe not on 'super high extreme detailed' mode, but on 'a bit less detailed but hardly noticable' mode, if you know what I mean

ok, but still, there are many programs that still need command line to install. And, ATI drivers are a bit harder to install, especialy if you don't know how things work (like me ).I don't say Linux is bad, it just needs a bit of time to get it working good

Few names, look for some reviews:Vapochill MicroAcrtic Cooling Freezer 64One thing I'd like to say; DO NOT COMBINE A PELT W/ AIR COOLING, you'll frie your cpu. You'll need a 226w pelt (at minimum to get good results), add an 80w for the cpu and you have nearly 300w that you have to cool, nearly impossible to do this w/ some turbine .Watercooling is a good solution and nowadays you have those easy (but not realy too good performing kist compared to ...). Just search a bit on the net for watercooling kits.

I doubt it to work. They should rerun that test w/ a virus scanner, firewall (not their own), Messenger and some other startup apps. What they say, if I'm correct, is that you'll be able to work w/ windows, while it hasn't loaded completely . Ok, it'll boot in 2/3 sec, but the whole log)in process will propably take a few minutes. And, they forget something, hdd's are slow, those things are not made for multitasking and not many people will have a NQC-ready hdd and controller next year. But, I'll leave the final verdict till it's here.

Forgotten to tell you my experience with Windows .My first contact was with Windows3.1(1). I loved it, because I couldn't work with DOS then, it honestly, it works pretty well on the old PI 166 .Then we got Win95 and I started to learn how it all worked and how I could administate it and still it was pretty stable, even when a 10y (?) old kid was messing around with it .Win98 on the other hand worked a litlle less stable and I had to reinstall it more than once (even once lost all my 'data'), because it refused to start.Meanwhile, my dad had WindowsNT4 installed and we used his to computer to surf the internet. Well, that was the crappiest OS I had worked with since Win3.x . There were some serious problems with the services so I could log-in during the first 5minutes, it couldn't remove empty folders if I had opened them before and sometimes I would hang completely. Then I moved to WinXP, in the beginning, I liked it, but after a while, but after a while, it realy got messed up. Loads of adware and spyware screwed the whole system. I've reinstalled WinXP about 15 times since I have it (and if I wouldn't be that lazy, it would have been 3 times more. Even now I'd like to reinstall it, but it takes too much time).Meanwhile, I've worked with ME, it crashed immediatly. Win2K is good, but not fast (kinda normal when you have the server edition ).SP2 was a no-go. I've installed it and 5 min later I was already rebooting to reinstall SP1.And, I've allready tried Longhorn, it's actualy pretty good, but I'm going to wait till the final version.

I've had some good and bad experience with Windows.I won't say that it's realy bad, but never expect me to say that it's good. The sole reason why most of the people around the world use windows, is because decades ago, windows was ought to be better than Mac. So, to be competitive and compatible to the rest of the world, you should have M$ stuff installed (ok, I know you can use Linux+OpenOffice.org etc..., but compatibility will never be perfect). The reason why people don't buy macs is because most users don't know Mac, users who might know it, don't want to buy some expensive computer that can't run windows apps (ok, Mac mini, but be honest, it's a weak Mac, isn't it ?) and the reason why people don't use Linux, is because they don't know it or they are afraid of using a console.Normal people just want to click on it so it works, they don't want to type some whole command to installe a program, click and play is what matters, and that's what M$ offers in XP SP2.Somebody said Windows shipped with an anti-virus program ? It does not (and if it does, it'll be infected within the hour after release), it only informs you about the need of a virusscanner, but fails to give inform you about free alternatives (that work better).I hear (read) a lot of people telling that windows can be safe when you have a firewall, virusscanner and some anti-spyware stuff installed. That's a wrong way of thinking. Do you buy a car and install a windsreen, bumper and gaskets afterward to make the car drive safely ??? I don't think so. All those apps to make windows safe use a lot of resources, and a loss in performance (ok, it's small, but it is there). So, why shouldn't we all use linux ? Because. Linux is still too hard for the average users and there are too less applications for it that people can buy (don't forget this, most people prefere going to a shop than searching the net for hours). Imagine, your daugther wants that newest Barbie game, you'll have to say no, because it won't work on linux (or you can't install good drivers, since it's a real pain in the *** to install ATI or nV drivers). And why not going to Mac, about the same reason (except the drivers). Still Macs are good alternatives, they are powerfull and look good, but they are expensive.

You can better stress test your cpu using S&M (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/).This tool stresses your cpu much harder than any other tool and finds error much faster. You have to run FPU test @ 1OO% load
