I used to have too many to list here, now I can honestly say one of my interests is finding those annoying spammers on the forums and hunting them down. Ok, I also enjoy skinning IPB and just general webdesign. You may seduce me with some XUL or XML as well :)
  1. I am not sure if Asta supports SSH anymore, but that could easily be the option you were looking for.In short, when you create an SSH connection with eg. putty (google putty.exe), you can enter commands to create a zip-file (or tarball if you use linux). Then it's all one file cd httpdocszip httdocs_backup.zip After that, you can use an ftp-client to download said file.
  2. I don't know to be honest. I had 2 yrs of Object Pascal (Kylix/Delphi), bash scripting, PHP in school. For just an idea, I learned some Flash actionScript And while I never paid much attention to php in school, I saw myself wanting to learn it for my site. Currently I am heavily into Lua for WoW addons, though I am not sure if Lua is an actual programming language. I do see resemblances to php and C++, in which I've dabbled for a while. I did study some Java, but due to a poor course (Jeigh knows about this) I gave up on it. I think he said even he, while already knowing Java, couldn't understand it lol.One thing I have major issues with in lua, the ; to finish a sentence, for some obscure reason it's not needed, while it can be used but often makes code error in wow ;)Does anyone wanna recommend a language?
  3. I vaguely recall having to press a button when downloading Limewire "Do you intend to download copyrighted material with LimeWire?" Yes or no. Limewire itself is not illegal, you can easily only share legit music from eg. friends. (they composed something, and are releasing it to you through limewire) Downloading copyrighted contents without having paid for it, IS illegal. Now, I have downloaded WoW through Limewire (yep, world of warcraft), but I own a fully legit account. Therefore my download too was legit. (For those doubting: https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-us/ search for Marillian on Tanaris server, that's me)
  4. Well, you're right again. I have an ATi x800 GTO and if I am not mistaken, Mandrake refuses to start a GUI, Fedora now won't install either (unless I wipe my HDD) due to a partition table issue which was caused by the Mandrake attempt. Not everything is "easy" in Linux. With the power savings I beg to differ, I have an OLD IBM Thinkpad 390e with a broken battery, the battery will last tops 15min on Windows 2000 Pro, on Fedora 3 or 4 (can't remember) it lasted 30 minutes. I was quite impressed by that. That said, it's probably not a conclusive test, it might have been an odd fluke or just luck, I can't be certain since the pc now only runs win 2k pro (mom uses it). Ubuntu, the Linux flavor which is confusing (not in use or install but in other things.) I hate the install of Ubuntu, I miss the options that eg. Fedora offers, though it may have changed now, I haven't used it for a while. My main issue was, it installed DVD stuff by default, yet I didn't own a dvd-rom/-rw at that time, which was odd to say the least, BUT for a user who hasn't done this before it may be handier. As far as the messy-under-the-hood, I sadly have to agree, several applications I learned to love in Fedora (Red Hat even) I couldn't install in Ubuntu, not even after meeting every single possible dependency. It was rather horrid in that way, I loathed the lack of su- Little things like that, made me decide to not use Ubuntu again, even though it shines out of the box, the Fedora shine was better. I still want to try Gentoo as well, fully compile it for my system, but it scares me still.
  5. I couldn't agree more with Quatrux, the competition in OSes would be a good thing, it would force programmers to improve the software, and continue to improve it. And, the price tag of eg. Vista wouldn't be so insane. In my opinion, prices that high are just opening the door to more pirated OSes out there, because not all pc users have the money to spend on a simple upgrade, in addition to better hardware. But that is for another topic, I believe. All in all, I love Linux, yet I use Windows. I hope that one day, BOTH are mainstream and direct competitors. If more software (read Adobe suites, games and the likes) were to exist for Linux as well, I would most likely not use Windows anymore to be frank. But at this point, it's a dream.
  6. In 95% of the forums with a large moderator/administrator base, there is indeed a forum specifically set to be used by members with that particular role, it is hidden from the non-moderating members, solely because it is there where things get discussed that pertain to keeping a forum clean, rules, new moderators, trouble members, etc. And it is not a secret that Xisto, too, has such a forum, so in that aspect, Ronel, you are correct.
  7. I have a lvl 32 Draenei Pally on Tanaris, and go ahead start the flaming on how pallys are overpowered, how the mounts are cheap etc etc... I also have a shaman (lvl14 only), a mage lvl 20(on Uldum, Blood Elf).I used to shy from paying subscription fees for games, but honestly - with most MMO's (but GuildWars) I've gotten burnt out on the botters, gold farmers etc. So I decided to pay for support, for decent servers, and game content (look up Archlord, the game for which the end content - the ability to become an Archlord, game name , came out almost a year after it's release). In fact, I am going to go play some
  8. Actually, if you do not like the salt, you could rinse your mouth with 3% or 4% H2O2, it tastes rather weird, but it does bleach the teeth (in fact most whitening gels contain peroxide). Also, toothpaste is only there for flavoring, you can easily brush your teeth without it, or with salt (but believe me, you'll puke )
  9. Very astute of you I am actually not hosted, but it's a residual status from my hosted days, when your account status switched to mod, hosted and then hosted + admin, it messes it up a little. I quit moderating here, Sten, because I lacked the time and the willpower to continue to moderate while it all seemed to point nowhere. I could spend hours warning people, deleting and everything else, walk away from the pc for 2 hrs, and come back to - well having to repeat the process. Anyhow, back to the topic, the only reason I did reply was because I do know how that part of the system here works, and I figured I'd share it. Didn't quite plan on the little interlude >.< ps. Mods, don't go warning me over that one I'll have your face gnawed off (ooooh that sounded so nice.. yes, I am weird )
  10. Being a mod has nothing to do with the hosting, when I joined here, I joined for the people - not hosting, at first. One day, I found a PM in my box, asking me how I felt about being a mod here. I accepted. Days, weeks thereafter, I spent hours a day on these forums, it's quite time consuming, being a moderator. I then became an admin, I didn't have specific powers, I just had the ability to ban, unban, allow hosting or not. Like I said, moderators and admins are chosen, it is not a right, it is a privilege, and requires hard work as a matter of fact. You see, I logged on again here, and if I wanted, I would probably get my moderator status back, but I know I don't have the time to donate to moderate, not anymore. I can mod some, but not like I did before. I can tell you really aim to be a mod, but the requirements are tough. You have to post really good posts, have good grammar and spelling, abide by the rules, try to help others (correctly), even at times ask people to not get too angry ( though that is mini modding and not the best course of action).Oh, and one last thing, when you are a mod and are hosted, it can be very hard to accumulate more credits (you still need those, you are not given them for free) because you spend most of your time fighting spam, useless posts, checking hosting applications, etc.
  11. Advanced member, etc is based on post count. Moderators and admins are selected, moderators are usually suggested by another moderator, there shall be voting going on, and then it's a yay or nay. That's about all.Admins, however, only get chosen by Opaque himself.
  12. I too voted for Linux, despite my current use of Win XP single boot. I miss my Fedora badly, but due to a hard drive issue - which compromises my entire setup if I attempt to install Linux - I have to stay with what I have. Also, I know for a fact that Fedora and Mandrake give me issues with my graphics card. If you simply wanted to know the easiest OS, I would say Windows, though it does require a certain amount of knowledge to configure it perfectly (seriously). Linux, on the other hand, is still a bit of a taboo for newcomers, though some distro's such as Ubuntu, make a switch rather easy.
  13. While I applaud this post, I must say two things.1. The overuse of carriage returns is rather annoying, there's absolutely no need for a whiteline under every single written line.2. For the love of [insert prefered Deity here] use more punctuation, and capitals. But other then that, nice information there, SM.
  14. I offered that back then yes, but they said the issue certainly was user - error. While I could perfectly mention things which made the "tech" ask me what on earth I was on about. I would assume someone who works on hardware for a living actually knows dead-on what chipsets are, and what molex connectors are as well. On Raid he eye-balled me, and I just said it was a back-up/safety setup to prevent data loss.
  15. Previous post with specs For those of you not wanting to read that long post, I'll summarize it quickly. I bought a 250GB sataII hard drive, I didn't know these things could be incompatible with motherboards, I asked the vendor to make sure it would work fine on my system. He assured me it would work like a charm. Long story made shorter, I hooked up the drive and booted up, the drive didn't show up at all. In Disk Management it did, but if I tried to format, it would freeze up my entire windows. I tried with nVidia chipset drivers and without, didn't seem to change it. I could not format it. Tried all the right settings, googled around, in the end I took the drive back to the store the same day, the man refused to take it back and replace it with another brand. He plopped the drive into his testing machine, and it worked fine. He said I must have been doing something wrong, so I asked what chipset the test machine had. It was a VIA chipset, which seemed to not have issues with a Maxtor DiamondMax10 250GB with 16mb cache. He formatted it in NTFS, and that seemed to solve some things, I could now see it, and format it in the partitions I wanted. When I shut down my pc, and booted up the next day, I found a new issue. My computer refused to boot up with the sata drive connected, I even reinstalled windows to hopefully solve it, but to no avail. So for a while, I unhook the (hot-swappable) sata while booting, and hooked it up again post-boot. I did BIOS flashes, everything, and somehow that got semi-fixed. I can start up (from power down state) with the sata, however, I can NOT just reboot - I need to power my machine down and up again if I want to get into windows with this drive hooked up. I even tried more power (heavier power supply), no use. Anyhow, I learned to live with it, really. But on this happy day, I decided I wanted Linux back, I still miss it. So I redid some partitions on the sata, with partition magic. It worked, or so it looked. I installed Linux on the sata (my main boot device is the ide, since I didn't dare using the sata for windows LOL), and that where it went wrong. Now the drive seems to be 390GB instead of 250GB in Disk Management, Partition Magic reads it as BAD. And uhm, some partitions which I had deleted are ...back. That's the status of my drives, and I dont know how to fix it. I believe it's the partition table that is corrupted, but how to solve it, no idea. I think the best is to get a new sata drive, put the files on there, and reformat the current one, but there's the incompatibility issue.
