  1. About any handy can read pdf's. IF you look at the list on the adobe site (https://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/) you will see that it has a reader for Palm, PocketPC and Symbian. So you still have plenty of choices . The problem is, I don't know any bad handy, so it'll be up to you the pick the right one. Here is an example: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It has a SD/MMC card slot and a USB host connector, wich means you can connect a USB flash disk or even a USB HDD case! Price seems ok here in Belgium, it costs about 220 Euro's If you realy want a long battery life (the n30 works 8hours w/o backlight) you could look for a pda that has a battery pack (my dad's Ipaq has one).
  2. They've went crazy at M$. Vista w/ Aero desktop would use a freaking 700Mb of memory !!! That means you don't have much left when you have 1Gb of memory (there aren't many people with 1.5Gb or even 2Gb).Plus installation requires 6Gb of hdd space, that's like peanuts if you have a 250Gb hdd, but it's still way over it.I wonder if Vista is able to run on a computer that has a DX8 card when you configure it to use the Win9x desktop lay-out.
  3. So you're telling me that you have serious powerfluctuations? I'd go complaint at the firms that provides your electricity. Now, I don't know that much of electricity, but maybe the main fuse is too small??? I don't know, that's the first thing that came to my mind.Other thing that might cause shutdown problems (but not related to electricity) is the cpu overheating, wich might happen if you're still using that microatx case. Try to check the cpu temp. I don't know how you'll have to do it in linux because I'm more used to windows, but I managed to do that w/ Superkaramba and some plug-in for Superkaramba.
  4. What you also can try is to recover some hardware from the dead computer, if it's ofcourse a bit descent.Things like the hdd (if it's large enough), cd-rw (if it already has one), mouse/keyb/monitor/speakers/..., can be recovered, but I'm not shure every shop will do this for you.
  5. IF the laptop has a videocard that is not integrated in the motherboard and if the laptop is made for a heavier graphics card (conserning the cooling).
  6. Same here, I have 2 physical, 2 virtual and 1 bleutooth network connection, and it works perfectly.I don't realy understand what you are trying to say, but I think you are trying to say that you have 2 network cards (lets call them A and B, makes my explanation more easy) and that if you want to use the other card (, you have to disable the first one (A) ? Correct? Why, cause different reasons give different answer is think?
  7. I suppose that the partitions that you want to format in FAT32 are at least 32Gb in size, right ? Now this is the problem: WindowsXP doesn't want you to create FAT32 partitions that are larger than 32Gb (and for once, they have a reason, it's up to you do see it as valid). There reason is that if you create partitions that are larger than 32Gb, the cluster size goes from 16KB to 32KB and M$ sees that as a too big waste of space (see this link for info: http://web.allensmith.net/Storage/HDDlimit/FAT16.htm) So I'd try to make smaller partitions or use another program (Partition Magic as you've suggested). P.s.: you can enable the NTFS-rw function by recompiling the kernel and enabling that feature (and you'll probably have to make some changes in FSTAB)
  8. It is possible, it just depends on the model.Bigger (desktop replacements) usualy have a PCIe slot in wich you can put a nice graka, but usualy laptops have a graphic chip integrated on the motherboard. If you just want a 2nd vga card, you could consider getting a USB VGA card.Maybe some info on the laptop could help us helping you
  9. It works perfectly, if you have copied the Win98 CD to the hdd, because on first boot, win98 won't find your cd wich it needs for installing new drivers.I've done it a few times and it works (except I forget to copy the cd everytime, over and over )
  10. Buy Windows ???I don't think we may help you, because that would be against the rules (no illegal stuff etc.).What I probably can tell you is that you don't have to have WinDefender2, other apps can do the same stuff (AV Software, Firewall and anti-crapware programs).
  11. 2. Rightclick on Recycle Bin and tick the "Don't move file to recycle bin ..."9. Display Settings > 2nd last tab (Vormgeving in dutch), then click on the "Effects" button, 2nd drop down box, select ClearType. Why do they make it so difficult if it can be done so much more easy???
  12. I'm not shure (never played w/ accesibilty options before), but try changing the windows theme back to default Lula or 9x style.Apart from this I can't help you because I don't have accesibility options installed.
  13. Keyboard shortcuts: Run: windows + R Find: windows + F (more info here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) If this is wat you want.
  14. As far as I know there's no external usb driver that can do that. organicbmx, I think the other firewire connector could be for attaching other firewire devices (so it acts like a hub -tough I'm not shure firewire can have hubs- ?).Best solution would be a NAS (networked attached storage), but that's prolly too expensive and not what you want.Other thing would be share it through a network (via windows sharing), it's not that hard, so it's realy worth a try (tough I suggest using an internal drive if you' do that, because they work faster and they also use less cpu power (usb uses lots more cpu than internal/firewire)
  15. I'm not realy a network guru, but try changing the DNS server setting to the one of your router (that's how it's here at home and it works like a charm ).
  16. I absolutely disagree about the swapfile trick. It's a totaly unlogic rule. Someone who has only 64Mb of RAM needs a bigger swap file, because 64Mb just isn't enough to store all the data (in fact, I have a PIII w/ a slimmed down version of XP, lots of disabled services and it still uses 77Mb of RAM), while someone who has 2Gb of RAM has almost no need for it. Imagine, winxp, with photoshop, opera and Mercury, let's assume it's about 600Mb of memory. The 64Mb pc has a total of 256Mb memory (64RAM, 192SWAP) and it will crash, while the 2GB pc can store everything in the much faster RAM. Swap file should be set different for every pc. Other tip for the swap file. Instead of creating a huge file (wich might prevent swapfile fragmentation), you could set a lower limit for the swap file (the size of this file is never changed, thus, no fragmentation) and a higher limit in case you'd need more swap space. E.g. I have the lower limit at 512Mb (my PC has 512MB RAM) and this is enough for most games. But some games (BF2, FEAR) need more so windows increases the swap size. Oh, and here is a good link for disabling services, I've been using this for a long while now: http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm
  17. I think your motherboard's getting a bit old .The fact that it can't remember the date/time is mostly caused by a dead CMOS battery, changing that could fix that little problem .The F1 problem could be the same because all settings are now lost due to a bad battery, but it could also be cause by a faulty/corrupted BIOS.If the soundcard is onboard, then the board is probably dying. Just for safety reason, ever tough about making some back-ups ??? You never what else dead hardware can kill (faulty PSU could overvolt or short a pc if it realy wants to )
  18. I have a good reason why not to support this one. There is this theory that those exploiters of bad codes (in any form and any application) try to find and exploit problems (of any kind) in software that is populare and widespread. Why do you think there are so few viri for Mac & Linux? Just because there aren't a zillion users in the world that are using it. Another example is FireFox. In the beginning it had no problems, no leaks (or at least no noticable), but when it got populare, it succeeded in having more bugs in a month than IE had . Now, what's my point about this? a) Let others use IE so that it remains populare and other browsers remain safe (by wich I mean, they are not examinated by the exploiters) Let other have problems with IE so that we could help them solving their problems (working on social life/bragging about computer skills/laughing with other's problems/...). You get the point I guess, just be a bit selfish
  19. Try disabling the firewalls on the other computers and have some patience, it might take a whil before windows can see any 'new' (booted) computer in a network (it also takes a long time before a shut-down pc is removed from the network). Also make shure that the gateway and dns settings are the same.
  20. In fact, I am pretty shure it has something to do with the PSU.PSU testers are fine, but not perfect, so don't just trust them blindely, because there are 2 causes that make a PSU shutdown:Overload (if not connected to the mobo then it will boot because the CPU and VGA won't load the psu anymore)ShortageTry disconnecting things like the hdd, cd and floppy and try again. Maybe removing an expansion card or even the vga card could help.Other thing could be the overheat protection. Check if the cpu heatsink is still descently on the cpu. But I doubt that that would be the problem, because even a full loaded P4 can run heatsinkless for a few seconds.Or is it a mobile cpu w/o a heatspreader ??? Because then it might work that fast.Last thing I just think about could be a faulty cpu or cpu settings. Maybe that a CMOS reset helps ?
  21. I like the case, except the front, it's kinda .. euh ... ugly ?Also to bad you have a µATX board, makes it look so small, simple and basic, but yeah, that's just what I think
  22. Sounds impossible. Have you done this by just copying the files to the fdd or did you do a format wich would copy the system files to it ? Linux can also make bootdisks, dunno how tough. I do know how the get the bootsector to a file (I use this to boot linux via the windows boot loader). it's as simple as dd if=/dev/sda3 bs=512 count=1 of=/mnt/floppy/bootsect.binwich would simply extract the bootsector from the 3th partition on my SATA disk.
  23. Not shure, but wasn't alpha used in older MAC's ?Did some research, G4's had something to do and currently, HP (=compaq = digital btw.) is selling alpha base servers.
  24. First one that come to my mind as KDE distro's are Suse (Novel), Mandriva, Slackware and Knoppix. Gnome can be found in RedHat/Fedora, Ubuntu, ...(I seem to know more KDE distro's than GNOME distro's ). A little bit OT, but I do start to like xfce, especialy on my slower computer. It's ugly, it's fast and the right-clickmenu is darn handy
  25. For some reason I've always used ReiserFS since I started installing Linux for real (other times it was just for testing and finding a good distro).I have no idea what the differences are so I don't realy care. But, on my other (slower) computer, I used ext2, because the slackware installer stated that it would be faster than ext3, so that choise was made rather easy . But what's the deal about the "journal"-thingie, because ext3 is the journaling (or something like that) version of ext2, but what is jounaling ??? Too bad that it's rather errorsensitive in case of an improper shutdown (linux crashed during compiling a new kernel, had to do a reset and chckdsk found loads of errors ).
