  1. Ok, I want to present you Mercury Messenger. It's a great chat program wich supports MSN, Jabber and Gmail Talk! (or at least the service). It's made in Java and is very customisable (especialy since 1709B03a). There are a few downsides to it (like large memory demands and Sygate PF wich hangs when Mercury is running), but it's a good one, I think it's even better than MSN. It has almost everything MSN has, except than sending custom winks (is being worked on) and the sounds sending feature. It has lost of custom emoticons, skins, listviews, ... on merxtra. This is what mine looks like (might not work, hosted by Xisto): http://mercury.to/ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  2. I don't have WindowsXP SP2, because I hate all the security messages you get. I feel like I have lost control over my machine, it just makes me and my pc work slower. My pc is secure and completely up-to-date, I have a good virus scanner (and a combination for on demand scanning), a tight firewall (and I'm behind a router), I do not use IE or Outlook (Express), and I have some Adware removing tools. Why do I need a balloon that say that my pc isn't secure ? I do not need more security than I have now. I do not need a message that says that the file I want to open is downloaded from the internet, I know that, I maybe have a short memory, but I do remember that.If it's not clear, I do not want all the freaking questions, and I do not have WiFi.
  3. Downloading the movie atm. But, my opinion won't change. Sorry, no, I don't want this stuff, I don't even want any virtual desktop software installed. It's annoying, alway searching where you have left your program, you can't see when something changes, ...If you don't have the space to put a program, get another monitor, even if it's some cheap as thing. When was the time that people were happy with MS-Dos or Win3.1? Just plain and simple, small and fast. ***Saw the video, it looks nice, ok, must admit it, but that's all. Seems kinda useless, this sounds stupid; the thickness of an application. I don't even think it would enhance the speed (time is money) at wich you can work, it's all just gimmicks. But, that's what I think, time will prove whether I'm wrong or not, I'm willing to change my opinion, if I was wrong.
  4. --oeps, pressed post button AND NO FREAKING EDIT BUTTON --... can access more than 24 paritions (C: - Z: ), so that should be the limit.
  5. Doesn't that make a lot of noise when accessing the drives ? I have a lot of old drives and they still tick hard when accessing and they make a sreeching noise (what do you except, ball bearing < fluid bearing), I even have a few drives that need active cooling on a chip before it works stable But, there is practicaly no limit on the number of hard drives, but I don't think Windows ca
  6. I'd love to have an XBOX360, PS3 and PSP, but I don't have the money and if I would have, I wouldn't feel like buying a game 2 times (on for console and one for PSP ).Somebody @ school has a PSP, and relay, the screen is BIG .I'm not for Nintendo (the type of games they have). I mean, Mario and all the cartoonesk games for children ? Nah, I prefer some good shooter , or something like GTA
  7. I'll only post my all-day pc.AMD AthlonXP 2500+ -During the week: --idle: 1826Mhz (166*11) --load: 2205Mhz (200*11) -During the weekends: --2354 (214*11@1.8V)SLK947U + fan (it changes, Y-stech 92mm, 80mm, TT SmartFan II, ...)Twinmos/M-tec 50B 2*256Mb DDR400 2.0-2-3-11Abit NF7-s v2.0 w/ zalman NB HSSapphire R9600Pro (474/324 when gaming)WD 120Gb SATA hddZalman 350W PSU (w/ a damned noisy fan)LiteOn DVDNec 5120a DVD-rwSony 17" CRT (got it for free, was dropped on the ground, only small damage)Digital (=Compaq=HP) 15" CRTOzaki HM30 Q3 5.1 (great set, good woof, but constant noise on front speakers)Running WindowsXP SP1 wich was screwed up after 2 weeks
  8. Nec 2510a, using the latest Nero package, but I don't burn more then a 'files dvd' (no moviesDVD or something like that)
  9. I have a copy of windows vista, they should keep it Longhorn (as the bootscreen still say: Windows Codename Longhorn, kinda cooler then Windows Vista).Just my 2 cents on longhorn, looks good, it's realy different, IE7 has only 2 buttons (but surprisingly, it works flawless), a lot of attention is put into debugging; problems and solutions. Still testing it tough, but ain't got much time.
  10. pff, all those gimmicks. It uses a lot of resources and after a while, the skin isn't good enough. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.There's only one skin I want now, and that good ol' win98, simple, fast and small (plus at some points I'm über conservative , on other points I realy wonna change)
  11. No, he'd better not. Linux only gives a false feeling about safety, but it's as vulnerable as windows if it's configured bad.
  12. You CPU can die anytime, overclocked or not. Overclocking just shortens the lifespan of a cpu (who's going to keep his cpu about 10 years ?). As longs as you do not up the voltage, you're pretty safe.As for me, I have my BIOS set that it shuts down even before I get a beep . 3 options are enabled to prevent any overheating (had it one when I had forgotten to turn a fan back on). It's realy fun, I have 2 compies wich still require jumper overclocking, it's fun, but sometimes a pain in the *bottom* (ow, I hate computer cases).
  13. Sorry to say, but that's an old Sempron, so it can't be that the 64-bit instructions are enabled. The CPU-z screen says the same thing, no X68-64 instructions. Can you tell me where I can find that test in vmware ?
  14. All of them combined in using some brains. Just google for the words: review OR test product just replace the product you want. This works also great w/o the 'test' A little example: review OR test Athlon X2 3800+
  15. lapotops are upgradeable nowadays, it's only a bit harder and more expensive to get the new stuff.CPU's can be upgraded easily and (ok, I'm not too shure about this one) not-onboard vid card (eg newer ATI and NV cards) can be swapped out too.Memory can be replaced, hdd too.The hdd is a bit the weakest point of a laptop, they realy lack speed (especialy budget minded laptops).
  16. Oops, sry, I just tend to forget things very fast .
  17. This isn't even correct !If a computer enter S1 standby mode, the computer will turn of things like the hdd and disconnect the CPU, but RAM still receives a bit of power, so no data is lost, generaly it takes a few seconds to leave S1.S3 is an optimized version, everything is powered off, but your RAM still receives power, so no data is lost, is will take a bit more time to get back to the desktop. The computer won't go throug POST and windows startup.Hibernate is a windows tweak that writes all data from the memory to the hdd. Basicly, this is the slowest one of the three, but power can be cut from the pc. Leaving this states requires the pc to pass POST and a recover of windows (can take less of more time then normal windows startup). Writing all data to the hdd requiers some time to, so, this is a very slow method, because all other (hardware) stand-by's do this in a few seconds.
  18. if I remember correclty, Bill Gates said 640K .120Gb isn't enough overhere, lots of songs, lots of vids (small vids tough), lots of pics and a few Vmware OS's. Still need to transfer 30Gb from a partition to a 28Gb partition, wonder how I'm going to do that
  19. You forget the most important thing, you need at minimum 512Mb ram (1Gb recomended). But I know that one of these 2 setting slows down gaming (512Mb RAM).
  20. mine takes 50sec to enter the password and half a min later it's ready.Normaly it goes faster (3 little bars in boot screen wouldn't even pass half of the complete bar, if you know what I mean). If it booted faster before, run spyware scans, virusscans, slim down the amount of start-up program (start>run>msconfig>startup(last tab)).Defrag the hdd and tweak the prefetch:In regedit:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParametersChange the EnablePrefetcher value to 5
  21. CPU: Athlon F57 (or a 3700+, or maybe a Dual Core 4800+).Memory: Gskill 1Gb Low Latency TCCD (2-2-2-5 timing at 200Mhz)HDD: 2 Raptor in RAID for programs and 160Gb SATA hdd for data/back-upVidCard: 2 GeForce 7800GTX in SLIWatercool is to keep it silent. That's high quality, but high priced to, expect something like $2000-3000
  22. Yep, PC is oc'ed . My Barton2500+ is at 2354Mhz @ 1.8V. Idle is 35°c and full load is about 54°c (SLK947u cooler w/ 92mm fan). Radeon9600Pro running at 474/324 (I know, it's a sucky overclocker, most would be able to do at least 500Mhz ).I also tried OC'ing a PIII733, wich went realy well, 150FSB was all stable, 160Mhz (127Mhz RAM) was too much for the PC100RAM. Too bad the PCI wasn't locked, so the 40/37Mhz killed the curent linux installed on the hdd .Also tried a K6-II 400Mhz, it's didn't like OC'ing, 450Mhz needed +0.6V (yes, they can handle that, the mobo gives from 2.2v to 3.5v or something arount that value).
  23. I'd go for both if I had the money. Desktops can be modded and overclocked, you can have some phun with the hardware, plus it still is a lot more faster than laptops. But, I'd also go for a laptop, because of it's 'portability', that's why it can't be a desktop replacement, so max. 15", LV or ULV CPU (Turion or Centrino laptop) combined w/ a descent nV or ATI graphics card, so it still allows gaming, but can work a long time on battery power and isn't working like a vacuüm cleaner and won't burn my balls.
  24. There actualy exist an external 1Tb hdd from Lacie, but that's just an external RAID array, so. But 1TB can be usefull, think about videoeditting, if you have uncompressed data, that takes a huge amount of space to store, same for audio, but a bit less . And if you have 1TB you can store your games that require a cd on it and mount it when the game needs it, like GTAIII.I think the largest drive atm is 400Gb.
