  1. Thanks for the list. It's quite cool just thinking about the language these well known sites use server side for its users. I always thought search engines would have used asp, cgi, php, jsp or something else like that, for the simple reason that they need to be able to execute database commands promptly to produce the relevant information for the users.I reckon the truth is, as mentioned briefly above, that these sites don't just use one programming language, I reckon they use a variety of different programming languages.Still, this is just one of those things we will never have the answer for!
  2. Wow, this clock looks interesting. I've never actually seen any clock held only by a magnetic field, and without any support. This image looks cool. I don't think i'd want one though. It looks a bit sensitive for me! If I were to touch a few of the buttons to set the alarm etc, I'd most likely drop the clock on the floor and break it.It's something different though, and a different kind of present for someone who likes clocks. It's amazing, the kind of things being brought out onto the market nowadays. These would have been unimaginable a few years ago.
  3. A very nice code and I may even use it myself in future codes if I ever need to display email addresses, although I prefer not to display email addresses (some of the intelligent bots are being coded to read the webpages the exact way that humans do) and I certainly try to avoid using javascript. The simple reason for avoiding javascript is that not all users have javascript enabled browsers (WebTV doesn't support javascript in the first place, and the modern internet browsers such as Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer have the option for users to turn it off). A lot of people do have javascript turned off, so basically, I advise staying clear of javascript when at all possible.Nice script nevertheless
  4. Wow, this is camera is really tiny. I'd be surprised if it actually produced any good photos though, although having said that, anything can be possible with the modern technology. I still think it's a bit on the small side though, the components inside must be the size of a pea too, there's plenty inside that could go wrong. When they come down cheaper in price, i reckon it'll come into a kind of fashion, where everyone goes around with these little cameras. We'll find out sooner or later anyway!I haven't thought about miniature cameras before, a lovely idea in my opinion. I hope they catch on well and get used sensibly.
  5. I personally think it's a nice new idea, having CD's that are capable of storing this amount of data, as technology is always increasing and more disk space is required. However, I can see the down side aswell. Scratching a CD, damaging or somehow else managing to stop a disk from working is just too easy in my opinion. If the company or user pays a lot of money for their reader and writer, they want to be sure that it will last a while and not go outdated in hurry, therefore I don't think this is necessary yet.I reckon they should concentrate on items similar to USB pen drives, as opposed to compact disks. At the end of the day, it's harder to break a USB pen than a CD. The transfer speed is probably also quicker on the USB port, as it supports the extremely fast transfer speed. This is just my opinion on this new amount of Disk space on a CD. Cheapest method at the moment, is to buy a lot of hard drive disk space, which is just as effective and faster. I reckon they should concentrate on these or the USB pens. I would say floppies, but these are old now and are prone to damage. Plus, because of their workings, it's only possible to have a very minute amount of data held. Thanks for sharing this with us. Always nice to know how well technology is doing in the improvement process!
  6. Hi there, Chmod's are confusing at first, but once you get to know them, they're nice. When you chmod a particular file, you are setting the permissions for the other pages/users. This determines whether or not they can view the file or whether they can make modifications to files (Write). 777 is the permissions allowing users and other pages to execute, run and write on the file the permission is assigned to. What you need to do, is set 777 to this html file once created. To do this, on an ftp client (such as Cute FTP or Smart FTP), you can right click on the file, and then click on 'properties / CHMOD'. Alternatively, you should be able to access the properties or Chmod menu from one of the menus along the top (where file, window, help etc is located). On my machine, it's under command. Hope this helps
  7. Have just accessed this thread through one of the moderator's signatures. I'd like to say these questions are pretty helpful, especially to the new people who sign-up who don't really have knowledge of the Xisto hosting.Did you know that on the xisto suspended page example, the Xisto links are wrong. For example, Admin Area being shown as a forum link.Should this be hidden? Just thought I'd best report it in case it's a bug which needs fixing or something.edit: I've just clicked on the Admin link, but it only takes to the Xisto.com home page, so maybe its ok.Well done to all of the moderators/admins who've answered these questions!
  8. hmmmm, this is a tricky one and I wasn't sure which one to go for, so I voted for I don't care. The simple reason is that in my opinion, many cases do not warrant death, although people who cause suffering, like on the London bombings last year or on September 11th in America, I feel these get away lightly with just a prison statement.I don't really mind to be honest. If the government want to bring back the death sentence, which they most likely wouldn't be able to do, due to new health and safety laws etc, then it's fine by me. Hopefully, it will stop all this pain and suffering thats happening unnecessarily.Nice thread by the way, it's interesting to see different people's views about past punishment
  9. hehe, I believe both GMT and UTC are acceptable today Whilst we are on the subject of server time, does anyone know the timezone of the Cron System (in relation to GMT [GMT +x])?Was trying to have a task carried out at 7pm GMT, but it happens at 3am or something like that. I thought it was 8 hours ahead, but the timezone doesn't seem to be consistent.
  10. Although teleporting is a complicated subject, I reckon it will be around in the future. Technology is improving all the time. What we thought impossible hundreds of years ago, is what we consider old fashioned now.I'm not convinced life would be able to match what happens in the computer games or in sci-fi movies though, there's so much that could go wrong. In reality, as mentioned in some of the previous posts, if a multiple amount of people or living beings teleport at the same time, some of the genetics could become mixed up. You could go into the teleporter as male, come out female or as another animal.Would be nice though, if we could move to another place in the matter of seconds. For example, people could leave time to the last minute, then teleport themselves to wherever they need to go. Would also help with the traffic congestion. Everyone could teleport instead of travelling by vehicles.Would probably be very expensive though, and would most probably involve training due to health and safety concerns and whatnot.Science is a very interesting subject, but I don't think teleporting will be invented within the next century. Flying cars will be existent before teleporters in my opinion.
  11. Having used both services, I can safely say that I prefer gmail over hotmail. Hotmail can be rather slow at times and contains a lot of awful adverts, whereas Gmail tends to be a more stable server and the only adverts included are the google adsense adverts. These also give more interesting adverts (which you more likely want to click on) as the system searches keywords for adverts. Both are fine though in my opinion, I would just rather use Gmail.
  12. I've recently purchased and installed Norton Antivirus (not the security pack) onto this computer. I did not uninstall AVG or ZoneAlarm though, as I wanted to be sure I was fully protected.I'm pleased to say that none of these programs have conflicted between one another. Well, apart from AVG Email scanning. I find that Norton and AVG scan at the same time so I've had to disable my AVG Email scanning to avoid having my email client crash.I most certainly recommend Norton and AVG. If one doesn't find a virus, a lot of the time the other one does. ZoneAlarm is also a very good firewall, which I've been using for a good couple of years.Hope this helps :-)
  13. I live in England, so due to the country's phone number code, I don't think I'd be able to sign up this way even if I wanted to (I don't want another gmail account really. I've already got one, and it's got like 200 invites on it. Whenever I get rid of the invites, google send me some more!).I reckon SMS is a more unique way of signing up. Although Google may probably use the phone number for marketing or for a new feature for the Company, I reckon it's a good idea. It most certainly checks that the users are telling the truth on signup. (If they enter the wrong number, then they won't receive the message and hence won't be able to validate the code/their account.Even if it was possible for me to sign up this way, I don't think I would actually want to. I never give my mobile phone number away online, as I don't fancy the spam messages received afterwards. It's not only site's which could spam. I'm worried about the number getting intercepted or something by someone who wants to wake me up at the early hours of the morning, just as a joke. I'd rather not sign up in this respect. Is nice to see that the gmail service has finally decided to go public though, even if the only way to sign up is by giving mobile numbers!
  14. Well, I don't buy a lot of mints, but I absolutely love spearmint flavoured mints. I really didn't know that you have to study the mints in the shop in this detail! I usually just choose a packet from the shelf and shove it in my basket ;)Next time I buy a packet of mints, I'll look at the label just for interest. The ingredients and nutritional info still won't put me off from buying the pack if i fancy them though ;)I did know that most mints nowadays consist of a lot of sugar, but wasn't aware how much. It is interesting to know about all these artifical ingredients in mints.
  15. The time on your page is displaying the time received straight from the server's time (most probably by using the php date function). If you were to fine tune this, lets say forward or backwards an hour, then the timezone should theoretically add the difference between your time and the time of this server (which is actually in Grenwich Mean Time (GMT - British Time.)).p.s. If you need another time code that allows you to fine tune the time, just reply. But the reasons explained above are what's happening to your site.Hope this helps :-)
  16. Hmmmm, the best way to do this would be to combine php with some aspects of html, which is still possible without the need of connecting to a database and whatnot. The following code is an example of how it could be done. <?phpif(isset($_POST['post'])) {if (($_POST['color'] == 'red') AND ($_POST['size'] == 'small')) {header("Location: page1.html"); }elseif (($_POST['color'] == 'blue') AND ($_POST['size'] == 'small')) {header("Location: page2.html"); }elseif (($_POST['color'] == 'green') AND ($_POST['size'] == 'small')) {header("Location: page3.html"); }elseif (($_POST['color'] == 'yellow') AND ($_POST['size'] == 'small')) {header("Location: page4.html"); }elseif (($_POST['color'] == 'red') AND ($_POST['size'] == 'medium')) {header("Location: page5.html"); }elseif (($_POST['color'] == 'blue') AND ($_POST['size'] == 'medium')) {header("Location: page6.html"); }elseif (($_POST['color'] == 'green') AND ($_POST['size'] == 'medium')) {header("Location: page7.html"); }elseif (($_POST['color'] == 'yellow') AND ($_POST['size'] == 'medium')) {header("Location: page8.html"); }elseif (($_POST['color'] == 'red') AND ($_POST['size'] == 'large')) {header("Location: page9.html"); }elseif (($_POST['color'] == 'blue') AND ($_POST['size'] == 'large')) {header("Location: page10.html"); }elseif (($_POST['color'] == 'green') AND ($_POST['size'] == 'large')) {header("Location: page11.html"); }elseif (($_POST['color'] == 'yellow') AND ($_POST['size'] == 'large')) {header("Location: page12.html"); }else { die("Error"); }exit;}?><form method='post' action='yourfile.php'><select name="color" size="1"><option>red</option><option>blue</option><option>green</option><option>yellow</option></select><br><select name="size" size="1"><option>small</option><option>medium</option><option>large</option></select><br><input type='submit' name='post' value='Press here to view the relevant page'></form> The isset function is used to work out whether or not the form (html down the bottom) has had its submit button pressed. After the isset, I've added some elseif statements. These specify the output pages for the various outcomes, the else statement is just an addition to produce errors if some mistake happens, which shouldn't. The html at the end of the php, is the simple drop down box code, the name tag is the name which the php post variable uses on the if/else statements. Hope this helps. There shouldn't be any problems with this coding here, as I typed onto the reply box, as opposed to my php IDE with syntax colouring! However, the testing was ok here. If for any reason, there are bugs or problems, please don't hesitate to reply or contact me!
  17. I've only got a very old phone, to which you are unable to download or insert custom ringtones, which makes you feel a bit annoyed at times, although I don't use phones a great deal so it'd be pretty pointless buying a new one.The tone I have set at the moment is Symphony No 40, by Mozart and it's getting to the point where I'm bored of it. May go back to the basic 'ring ring'. ;-)Another interesting thread, keep up with the posts, it's interesting to see what tones other people have on their phones!
  18. My favourite tooth paste has got to be aquafresh. I like the smell and the taste of the paste once my teeth have been brushed. I remember when I was young. I used to love guessing which colours would come out of the tube, whether they'd be blue or green! If aquafresh didn't exist, my next favourite would just have to be colgate. I notice my teeth look a lot cleaner once this paste has been used. These two tooth pastes appear to be the most popular and rightly so!
  19. Hmmm, the watching movies out of sunglasses sounds like an extremely cool invention, although I go by a couple of the previous posts in this thread. When they come out, they will most probably be the price of some of the modern televisions. I don't think I'll be getting any. Plus, I don't agree that people should be watching movies whilst walking or driving etc, it is just asking for trouble! As for the 3D view, I believe the post a few post backs about the power boost needed and a different screen for each eye. However, I feel that with the modern technological revolution, something will be invented to enable this to happen, without the need to charge every other minute! Will be nice to see what these are like when they come out though anyway. Thanks for sharing
  20. Ouch, I didn't think to look on the server status tab. I guess I should've checked it out, I guess this is a warning reminding me to take a backup!Sorry for the hassle and thanks for your help brandice :)This topic is now solved
  21. Hello. My Mysql databases appear to have been removed off of my account, yet according to my cpanel, space is still being used on databases. Hopefully I haven't lost any of my data, because I haven't taken a backup after recent updates, but If I have, I'll have to make do with previous backup. Any idea what's wrong? Here's a quote from my cpanel As you can see, my database data still appears to be on the system, but I can't access my database at all, nor can my scripts. Hope you can help Edit: Sorry If I've posted in the wrong forum, wasn't sure which one to post in, saw this was free webhosting support, so posted here, but just noticed another support forum. Please move if it's in the wrong place!
  22. It sounds to me like this new beta version of Internet Explorer (Version 7) is a little bit dodgy, so I won't even bother downloading here. I may, however, download it when it's a sure secure version and actually has an installer :rolleyes:Is nice to see that they are actually working to the internet browser section of their company though. It really did need lots of work, with all these vulnerabilities going around (which i've heard of) from version 6.Hopefully it will improve to be better than firefox when it's complete. I really do prefer internet explorer cos of the speed at loading. Mozilla firefox appears to take ages to load on my pc.
  23. Otherwise, there's another very popular forum package called phpbb, which can also be downloaded from your fantastico menu. Personally, I don't like this a lot, but I don't really use forum applications anymore. I don't have a purpose.I used to use forum software a lot, the best i've come across is vbulletin, but obviously for free, it's got to be phpbb now that ipb no longer owns a free downloadable version.Hope this helps :-)
  24. Microsoft don't defaultly delete your spyware, but I'm pretty sure they've got an extremely good quality spyware application to download, which does remove spyware and probably adware. The program is called Microsoft AntiSpyware I believe, It's best to search google because I've never used it myself so don't know where to get it from etc. i've just heard good things about it from my college and someone else who's into computing.Hope this helps
  25. Wow, I never knew how April fools day came about. I've never really brought myself to think about it though. I've just taken it for granted. So, it was due to a mishap regarding Calendars? It all appears to be confusing stuff in my opinion. Amazing how cruel some people get to proove to others that they're the ones who are correct (for example, with the new year date).Anyway, I don't suppose it will change much knowing about April Fools. It was interesting stuff to know though, thanks for sharing!
