  1. There is also a program called bluej which I found and downloaded before, when I was trying to learn Java. It was very good, easy to use and didn't take too long to download, install and run. You should be able to find this program by doing a quick search on google. The problem with developing in Java, is that because it's such a technical language, you will find that all the compilers/ide's will need to be fairly big in size in order to be able to include descriptions of all the various functions and items that can be found in the Java programming language.I have used JCreator, BlueJ and Eclipse before and out of the three, I feel the one I've got on with the best would have to be BlueJ. This one seems to be the ide which is the most user friendly, for me anyway. Some other people disagree with me and say Eclipse is better.I guess the best Java ide to use varies from person to person. What I'd suggest you do, would be to download all of the Java editors listed on this topic and try each one out, maybe try the hello world script. You will then be able to decide which one you prefer and the one which you find makes the coding and compiling a lot easier.
  2. Freemind is quite a good program. I remember a few years ago when I was studying at school, I needed to create a mind map for one of my subjects. I didn't have any money to pay for anything fancy, so I did a few searches on Google. Freemind was the program which came up.I downloaded it and managed to create the mind maps the way I wanted them to look. The mind maps were very easy to create and when they were created, they looked very professional.
  3. I'm not sure what to believe, but I've heard a number of different beliefs from different people about what they think happens when our life on Earth comes to an end.I do believe there is some kind of life after death. I don't know whether what people say about incarnation is true or whether there is such a place as a heaven or a hell, but I do believe there is some kind of God about. At the end of the day, if there wasn't such a person as God, who created the Earth in the first place? People who don't believe in God would say the world was created due to science, the big bang theory etc, but who would have caused this explosion to happen. I think it must have been God.God is the person who created all of us so God is the person who has the responsibility of choosing what he wants us to do when we've finished our main (current) lives. Maybe he has different places for different people. Maybe he turns different people into different organisms? I'm really not sure. All I do know, if you have a good life and you help people out, if there is an after life, you can be sure that you will be respected and given a nice place to live.
  4. Everything's now working fine on my hosting account apart from the database.I'm now experiencing major problems with connecting to a mysql database. PHP keeps displaying errors My website isn't really usable at the moment. You can view the webpages if you refresh the page, but you can't really do this when posting to a database from a form.Is anyone else having problems with their mysql databases, or is it only me?Hopefully it'll sort itself out soon. Well done Opaque for resolving all of the problems experienced after replacing the hard drive of the server
  5. I still get the "No input file specified." error message when I try to open phpmyadmin :lol:I seem to be getting less of the mysql connection error messages though. Keep up the good work Opaque, I'm sure we'll get there soon. I'm sure we'd all rather lose our data for a day of two than lose it for good, finding out the hard drive had failed.
  6. There seems to be a couple of problems with my hosting account. The webpages all seem to work without a problem, but I seem to be having a problem with mysql. I keep getting the mysql connection errors (like darran) and when I try to open phpmyadmin, I get the error message "No input file specified".I can access ftp and cpanel without a problem.
  7. This is a very good tutorial. It is easy to read and easy to understand. The only problem is that at the moment, I don't have the need to change my website's index file. However, there's bound to be other users out there who do want to change the website's start page. This tutorial will certainly help. If anyone ever asks me how to do it, I will refer them to this topic. Thanks for sharing
  8. I personally think that the image you have created is quite a good one. It is certainly a lot better than what I could create. To improve it, I would recommend adding shading or some other effect to make your signature look nicer.I agree with what some of the other users have suggested, about using a different program for doing the imaging work. Fireworks is quite a good program and includes a lot of tools, however, if you were to choose a more advanced program such as The Gimp mentioned above or Adobe Photoshop if you were interesting in creating professional images, you would have a lot more effects to choose from and would be able to make use of main different brush styles and schemes etc.If you do move over to another program, such as The Gimp, what you could do is copy and paste your image and edit the copy. You could then add various effects and play around with different brushes without messing up the original. You could then perhaps post your new image to this topic or simply compare the two images which you created (the one you did on Fireworks and the one you did on the other imaging programming (Gimp etc). You have done well with creating what you have. The image has a very good design. Keep up the good work
  9. I think your website looks a bit plain. I don't really like the design :lol:I also think that the logo which you have used doesn't really fit the colours of the background, which biscuitrat has also said (in the post above). Also, to make the site more professional, you could concentrate on using a more professional background, maybe a lighter one? and change font colours for various items such as holding your mouse over hyperlinks etc.I think getting the site right is a little bit of trial and error. You need to play around until you get the borders looking nice and colours which fit the image. I personally prefer sites which have lighter backgrounds rather than sites which have dark. I feel the sites which have a dark colour are a bit dull. Lighter colours allow you to show off more with various images or different text styles. If you are happy with your website, I wouldn't worry too much about changing it. It's you, the webmaster, who gets to choose which colours and border styles are used.
  10. I think PC is the best system and not just for games. With the existance of the Internet, it is possible to keep updating computers and adding various parts to games, such as new maps or new scenery by simply downloading from the game's websites. On other systems, there is more of a limitation. Even if there is an internet connection, there's not much memory etc available to actually add new content into the games and you will probably find that a lot of the downloads will fail. When a playstation, an xbox or gameboy etc becomes out of date, the console's no longer worth bothering with, you need to go out and buy a whole new system. With a computer, if a new operating system comes out, you only need to upgrade one or two components which usually don't cost a lot of money to change.I guess it's down to the kind of system the person likes playing on. Some people don't like sitting on a computer chair playing on a computer. Others don't really like using their televisions for gaming.
  11. wow, i never knew computers were be able to sing. Also, I would never have guessed that the voices which are used on Microsoft's Narrator would be used for the computer's singing. The audio clips on that site are good. I'm really impressed at how far technology has actually gone, what with computers now being able to sing as well as talk. I agree with jlhaslip's post above. I doubt that in a couple of years, singing would be the most advanced thing computers could do. In a couple of years, computers will most likely be able to do a lot more than just singing. Looking at singing in a couple of years will look old.I think if Microsoft did release full length songs similar to the clips on the site, they would become very popular and could even make the top part of the charts.
  12. I don't think Windows Vista is that bad. The warnings are there for the users so the user can confirm he or she wants the computer to do the task. If the warnings get to be a bit of a pain, they can easily be disabled in the Control Panel.Personally, I feel these warnings are a good thing. You can confirm what you want to do. If you choose the wrong option, you don't have to have your computer perform the task. You can simply click on the deny button when the Vista warning appears.
  13. I haven't used all of the internet browsers before, but I've used the main ones (internet explorer and firefox). I've also seen opera in use but I don't use this browser myself so I'm not really able to comment too much on the speed of this browser. If you don't have enough time to worry about installing additional software to access the internet, Internet Explorer is the best browser to use as it's a default browser which comes with the Microsoft Windows operating systems. However, Firefox doesn't take a long time to download now that nearly everyone has broadband and once the installation program has been installed, the internet browser can be installed in less than 5 minutes, so installation isn't really too much of a problem.Out of Internet Explorer and Firefox, I'd say that the newest version of Internet explorer is faster than Firefox. However, if the browser you were comparing was internet explorer 6 I would say that firefox would be faster. The problem with firefox is, certainly on slower computers, it takes quite a while for the browser to load. Once the web browser has loaded, browsing to websites is quite quick. The slow initial load was the reason I still used Internet Explorer (version 6.0) over Firefox. Some of the people who dislike Microsoft's internet browser would say that it's more vulnerable to attacks as it's a highly used system which Microsoft are supplying to everybody in their operating systems. This may be true, but as an Internet Explorer user I would say that Microsoft have fairly good security and patch up the major problems as soon as they find out about them.At the end of the day, I think it's down to the user which internet browser they wish to use. I also agree that it shouldn't just be speed which people should take into consideration when choosing which web browser to use. There are also other things, such as security and how stable it is. Some browsers are more user friendly than others and different people find different browsers easier to use. Also, I feel that the speed of an internet browser is determined by the user's computer and not by the browser itself.
  14. I like both the horizontal banner and the vertical banner you made for your website. The white text and font seems to go well on that blue textured background. They are very professional.I disagree with Autumn's suggestion of using Flash. If you have the image in a flash format, the users of your website need to have the flash add-in installed to their web browsers. By using animated gifs, you are using more of a standard image file type which more people can view. Also, it was mentioned that speed might be a problem with your image. I disagree. Your banner seems to load fast on some of the slowest broadband speeds. hardly anyone seems to have dial up now anyway. If speed does become a problem, there are many sites out there which allow you to optmize the image anyway, such as the one which jlhaslip listed above.I'd rate this banner 9 out of 10. On its own it isn't the same as when it's actually part of a website. When it's added to the website, if it's still good, it could possibly get a rating of 10 out of 10.
  15. I quite like the design of this website, but I feel the background colour is too white. I don't think the background would be as bad if the text was a bit darker. They text which is a grey colour on top of the white background strains your eyes after a while. The purple, blue and red banner doesn't really fit with the design. The rest of your site uses a white, grey, red and black colour scheme, so this banner really stands out as something completely different. Also, there is a big black rectangle at the bottom of this image which doesn't look right. If you were able to remove this black bit and change colours to fit the colour scheme of your site, maybe white and grey, I think it would look a lot better. On a scale from 1 to 10, I would rate this site about 7/10.
  16. I quite like the design of this website. One problem which I can see is the width of the column containing the links on the left. I feel this is too wide. The content of your page is a bit squashed up.Maybe you could fix this problem by making the whole of your table a little wider? Otherwise maybe make the column containing the links narrower?Your design is very professional and is easy to use and view. The colours go together well and don't hurt your eyes, unlike the colour schemes on some other websites. I also like the images you've used, such as your site's banner. There is a very small typo on the first page. ('relfects' is written instead of 'reflects'). There may be others, can't see any but I wouldn't worry too much about them, the site looks good. Everyone makes typing mistakes once in a while.I'd rate this site 9 out of 10.
  17. I don't think the website is really that bad. I know the links don't work, but I assume you will be linking the pages once you've finished creating the content for the site?I don't think the colours are too bad, although I guess that's down to personal preference. The design is basic, but very professional in my opinion. I don't think you need to modify it a lot more. If you're unhappy with the colours you could change those, but I think it looks fine now. I'm using internet explorer 7. Haven't tried accessing on any other internet browsers. I don't know whether there are any problems with the tables in other browsers, but on here it's fine.I'd rate the design 8.5/10.
  18. I don't really mind which toothpaste I use. My favourite has to be either aquafresh or colgate.I think colgate seems to work slightly better than aquafresh does although I'd say aquafresh probably has a better taste. The problem with aquafresh is that most of the company's toothpaste's seem to be in one of those containers you need to push the button on the top. When there's not a lot of toothpaste left, it's nearly impossible to get anything out of them, even if you know there's enough for 3 or 4 more brushes. This is the worst thing about aquafresh. I don't know whether aquafresh do any in the normal toothpaste packets like colgate do. If they do, I'd say aquafresh would be a lot better. The only problem I can think of about colgate is that you need to have quite a bit of toothpaste on your brush, otherwise it doesn't seem to do anything.Even though you nede to have quite a bit of colgate toothpaste on your brush, it is very cheap to buy, so I would certainly recommend it to anyone who wants to know of a good toothpaste.
  19. A water vacuum cleaner sounds like an interesting new design of a hoover.I'm not sure whether many people would want to go out to the shops and buy them though. If they're vacuum cleaners that use water instead of air, wouldn't they make everywhere wet? Also, there are many places you can't really get to, the air blows the particles out to places you can easily get to. I'm not sure whether the water would do such a good job at moving these particles.Water does have its advantages as you stated in the post above. You mentioned germs and cleaning the air. If you use a normal air vacuum cleaner, the bacteria wouldn't really be removed, you'd just be blowing the visible particles into the hoover bag ready to be collected by the rubbish men. If you were able to use a water vacuum cleaner, like this h20 model, you could perhaps add some kind of disinfectant solution which could completely remove the germs.I'm not sure whether water vacuum cleaners would make the air fresher by a lot, unless they were able to include an air freshener or something similar. They're still new, it may be that they'll become a lot more popular than the air vacuum cleaners and not soak everywhere. I suppose only time will tell. I wouldn't fancy going out and buying one until I know it actually does the job properly.I think these vacuum cleaners are a very nice idea for cleaning things like tiles, but for carpets I think using water cleaners isn't a good idea. It's better to use the standard air ones.
  20. Yes, I've had to disable my Javascript aswell in order to be able to post or view the topics. It seems to be a problem Xisto's end rather than problems with our machines. I'm using internet explorer 7 at the moment and get the same error you do.
  21. I quite like the look of this shoutbox. It is very easy to use and looks professional. The only problem I can think of is that it isn't really wide enough and you have to scroll across the scroll bar a little bit in order to see the full post.It is only a small issue though. These are the kinds of things that are fixed later on, either by adding new features and releasing a new version or simply by releasing a patch.I feel that once you've finished adding the administration side, this would be a good shoutbox and possibly even one which some of the Xisto users, and other people who've read this topic, would use on their websites.I don't have a need to use a shoutbox at the moment, but if I ever did create a site which needed a shoutbox, I'd certainly consider your one as a ready-made code to save having to create my own. It's one of the best shoutbox scripts I've seen. Well done, Keep up the good work with your shoutbox coding
  22. I haven't actually played any text based rpgs, but I imagine if I played on one I would enjoy it.I'm currently in the process of trying to create my own rpg. I'm creating this in php so this will be a text based rpg.Recently, I have gotten into massive multiplayer games such as runescape. I feel a lot of parts of games like these are realistic and if you get into something fun it can become quite addictive. One thing that's good about rpgs is levelling up. I feel the levelling up is what makes such games more realistic. If you think about it, in reality, as you gain more experience at doing something, you are able to perform that task a lot easier and quicker. The same thing happens on these rpg games. Imagine you are working on your attack skill, the more experience you have on this skill, the more likely you are to have attacked an online opponent and dealt some damage.Although Text based rpgs don't have any images or anything like that, they still follow the design of a basic rpg game, with the levelling up. I imagine there are some people out there who don't like having a load of images spoiling the game and possibly some who prefer playing these games in a text format. Finally, games which are in a text format are a lot easier and quicker for people with slower internet connections or slower computers to view. The computer doesn't need to load any images or anything which could take some time to download or display on the computer. It's only text which needs to be outputted onto the screen.
  23. I think the current design of your website is much better than the alternate design.I feel the images next to each image on the navigation bar improve the website. They make the website more interesting than when there's just plain links (or images as links) like the alternate design. In my opinion, both of the designs look professional. I feel the only person who should decide which design to use is the website creator (yourself). It's no use creating and using a design which you're not going to like. I don't feel it makes a lot of difference which design you use. I like the images next to the navigation links, however, others wouldn't. I think it's all down to personal preference. Keep up the good work. I also like the banner. A lot of websites don't have a professional banner which fits in nicely with the background, your website however seems to be an exception.
  24. It looks quite a good site, includes a lot of text. However, I would still say the text is a couple of sizes too big. If you could decrease the font size by just a little bit, it would fit in nicely and you'd be able to clearly see the bigger font is the title (at the moment, there isn't a lot of difference between the two font sizes). Also, if possible I would steer clear of freewebs and try to design something on your own. There are many WYSIWYG (What-you-see-is-what-you-get) web authoring programs out there, most of which provide their own templates to enable you to create a professional looking website without any knowledge of html. Freewebs spoil their customer's websites by the amount of advertisements and banners they put on their site and everybody who knows freewebs also know that you didn't really produce a lot for the site (you didn't touch the template or anything), you simply just loaded the freewebs site and typed in the text and pressed save.I know I've mentioned a lot of negative things about your website being hosted on freewebs, but I feel constructive criticism is better than telling you everything is fine. The bad points highlight what it is that needs to be changed.I agree what Autumn said above, your website certainly has potential, so if I was you, I'd move away from freewebs, get to know a what-you-see-is-what-you-get editor such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver and create something you're going to like, something creative.
  25. I like the first site, the one for the irc network. It uses a good colour scheme, loads quickly and looks very professional. The only thing which I would say is a bad thing about the site, is the table. When you browse to the various pages, the table adjusts itself depending on how much content is included on the page. If you could overcome this problem, maybe by including blank space, an image or something like that, I feel the website could be better. The second site looks professional and is neatly laid out. The only thing I could comment on is there is no explanation of what the Pastebin actually does. If you didn't look at the page title in the title bar of your web browser, you wouldn't have a clue it was even a paste bin. Maybe you could include a page title or a small paragraph of text under the submit button?Overall, I feel that both sites are very good and professional. They also load very fast on my internet browser (I'm using internet explorer 7, which is one of the most common web browsers). It might be worth downloading another internet browser such as firefox, just so that you get an idea what your site looks like on different web browsers. Occasionally, problems are experienced on one internet browser but not on others.
