  1. I'll talk about the aesthetic aspects because that's the part of a website that interests me most, and I'm no expert on the coding part, so I'll pass that.Your website has all the aspects that a good website is expected to have: easy navigation, neat and crisp, good choice of colors and easy to read. It's not outstanding enough yet for a commercial portfolio, but it's only your first pro design, so I think you'll do better with the designing soon. I find that the slideshow distracts me from the text on the left side. It could have been removed, or you could make it a picture of the artist's latest work or most recommended work. Also, the navigation menu doesn't fit the width of the table. Good job on the drop down menu and the cool gallery script by the way. The gallery script is very suitable for art portfolios.
  2. I just did a psyhology class and I learnt that sleep deprivation -> aka staying up most of the night, is really bad for your health. It affects your mood and concentration, and it is probably worsening the depression you have. It is good to channel your efforts into something else to distract you, but make it a healthy one e.g. sports, getting to know more people etc. I'm not saying studying is unhealthy, but forcing yourself to stay up late to study is bad. Adopt a healthier lifestyle by sleeping early every day. You'll have the time and energy to devote to studying in the day, and you'll be able to absorb so better so that you don't need the night for the extra time. Life is really about being happy and comfortable with yourself. It can be as simple as having a healthy lifestyle. When you're happy and healthy, you won't even feel the pressure from your parents so much, and you'll be able to do better so you can satisfy your parents too. Good luck!
  3. Some people think that performance appraisals are a waste of time and treat it likely, but how you treat it does have an impact on your career. First of all, some information about how performance appraisals work. Notice from rvalkass: Anything which is not original to the forums should be put in Quote tags. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  4. I feel really sorry for your sister. Those 'rocker' friends of hers are a really bad influence and they give rockers and goths a bad name. It's really difficult since she screams at you when you approach her. She's obviously doing this because she's at the age where she is very susceptible to influence, and she's probably afraid that she'd lose these 'cool' new friends of hers if she doesn't blend in with them. I agree with bee, I had a friend who went emo and cut her wrist and stuff. She still has all the scars on her arm. She grew out of it after a couple of years. But I think it did affect her studies. Perhaps you can compile a photo album of her old photos looking all sweet and barbie-like and give it to her, and see what she thinks? It might evoke happy memories when she sees herself looking all pretty in contrast to the mess she is now. If she tries to cut herself again, tell her that it will leave scars and she's going to regret it when she grows up. Girls always want to look good. Take this tip from a girl. If you have friends who wouldn't mind befriending your sister, introduce them to her. Maybe some new company will remind her that her rocker friends aren't the only people who will be her friends. And of course, always let her know you will be around to help her. She may be screaming because she wants to look like a rebellious rocker or she's just depressed. Don't get turned off just because she screams at you. She will soon get tired of screaming (it's tiring work) and she will eventually stop and let you say your piece. By the way, with regards to your comment: Does she actually still go on family outings and mingle with you all? Because if she still does, then at least it's a good sign. Tell your dad not to have such a mentality. It's all right to dress up differently, and if he stops her spending time with the family just because he can't accept the way she dresses, she may really ignore all of you for good.
  5. I can spend the whole day in front of the computer without doing anything else. To be frank, im more addicted to the internet than the computer, but you need the computer to access the internet. I can live in seclusion, but give me a computer and an internet connection! But if I'm outside or on a holiday trip, I won't miss my computer. I wouldn't even dream of bringing it cos' it's troublesome, so I guess I'm not so badly affected.
  6. Thanks for all your replies! I'll analyse them (I'm really bad with computers) and try out some of your recommendations. To csp4.0: No, nothing suspicious happened. In fact, I rarely get the BSOD with that computer. I haven't even touched it for weeks and that day, I just decided I'd transfer some files. I don't think it's a virus either because I have spyware doctor which does a pretty good job keeping those spyware and trojans at bay and I rarely surf the net with that computer or install stuff to be able to get viruses. That's why I'm really puzzled.
  7. I guess you could die from a heart attack? Or suffer from anything that inflicts harm on your psychological well-being. But I'm pretty sure you can't suffer from any physical injury just because you dream about it. But if you dreamt that you were hitting yourself, then you may probably be thrashing around in bed, hitting yourself too and this may result in some serious injury. We're never safe in life eh?
  8. I can't start up my computer. When I switch it on, it just goes to a blank screen, or sometimes, it will go to the Blue Screen of Death, and the message on it changes every time, so I don't even know how to solve it. I've gotten the Page Fault In Non Paged Area error a couple of times. I tried to boot my computer from my Windows XP Service Pack 1 CD, but after running it and repairing Windows XP, the problem isn't solved. I've also tried to start my computer from safe mode but it still shows the BSOD.I don't even know how it happened. I didn't install any new software or hardware and I was just transferring files to my thumbdrive when this nonsense began to happen. Thanks for any help and suggestion you can offer me!I'm not sure if I posted in the right place, cos' I don't even know if it's a hardware or software problem. Apologies to the mod who has to move this if I posted in the wrong place.
  9. I wouldn't use paypal either because I hate paypal. I've had some unpleasant experiences with it and I've heard horror stories about it. Personally, I'm not the sort who gives donations if I can help it. But if you have a very informative/helpful resource site, you can request for donations. Remember to always put an explanation on why you need donations e.g. To maintain the servers, or to because finding and compiling the info on your site takes up a lot of time which you could otherwise dedicate to work or something. You could also offer a special gift with every donation e.g. a free exclusive tutorial, an exclusive photoshop brush, an opportunity to highlight their website on your front page etc.If you don't want to use paypal, you could use e-gold. Put a link to your e-gold account and have people to donate money to it. Or you can put an address for where you want a cheque sent to (though personally I'd find this very troublesome), or have interested donors email you and let them tell you how they want to donate to you.
  10. The key to a good speech is to make it brief and straight to the point. If you do not take the time to craft a tight, focused presentation for a short talk, you will lose your audience and possibly, your reputation. A common misconception is that one does not need to practise a five-minute talk because it is just a short speech, but this is the wrong mentality. Here are some guidelines on how to write a good, short speech:1. The writing for short speeches has to be better than for long ones. You have less time to get your critical message across.2. You must make sure the audience gets the central core theme of your message - right away3. You have no luxury of warming up your audience as you sometimes can do in a longer talk or a seminar. You must make the first impression the best.4. Do not wander around the subject. Go off on a tangent and in a flash, and your time will be up. And when you return to your seat, your audience will be wondering what you just said.5. Be organised. Otherwise you will trail past your alloted time, and no one likes that - not the audience, the organizer or other speakers, and you end up creating a bad impression of having poor time management.6. If you do not want to blend in anonymously with all the other speakers before and after you, create an impactful moment. A clever quote, a great joke or surprising statistics will help you stand out, be memorable, and make your point.7. The logical flow of your talk must be tighter than in a longer talk, or your audience will perceive you as a five-minute blatherer.8. Memorise your talk well. You will have no time to develop it as you go or use audience interaction or other speech devices to help you remember your material.9. Be different from the previous speaker so you get your audience's attention quickly. If your style is the same as what they have just heard, they may tune out easily. Therefore, if possible, try to find out as much as you can about the speaker before you.10. Know what you want to achieve with your audience and aim for it.Remember to keep your message to the point, on target and focused. Do not attempt to try to tell your audience everything because that is impossible in a short speech. Pick the most important points always.
  11. Is it possible to use co.cc as an actual domain? http://www.co.cc/ offers free url redirection and dns service. It's like uni.cc But when I tried to use add-on domain to add it, I get the following error: I've already changed the dns settings in my co.cc account
  12. Belgium is one of my favorite places to visit. As a tourist, here are 6 things which I feel are must-dos in Belgium.1. Get there by train.Belgium has a very tiny airport, so it's best that you arrive by train at the Central Station, which was built in the 19th century. You can take the train from any major European city like London or Paris and it'll take you right into the city centre. It's quite romantic, it's cheaper than flying, and it's the most efficient way of seeing Europe because each city is just 200 to 300km away. It costs about 82 euros for a Paris-Antwerp adult ticket.2. Check out The Diamond DistrictDiamonds have been cut and traded there for several centuries. You can get great deals for jewellery and diamonds. It's also one of the few places in Europe where you can see orthodox Jews. You'll hear Yiddish, a kind of German-Polish dialect, on the streets. There's plenty of Jewish food like falafel, a wrap with tomatoes and other vegetables. One restaurant I'd recommend is Benny Falafel Restaurant. The Diamond District is next to Central Station.3. Savour mussels with Belgian fries and beer.In summer, you must visit Maritime For Mussels, a restaurant in the old part of the city, for seafood and mussels. The latter are cooked in boiling water with lots of onions. On a hot day, you should have them with a cold beer and Belgian fries, and relax on the terrace. Order the local beer, De Konick, which is a very dark and strong beer. The restaurant is in Suikerrieu.4. Don't haggleBargaining is a no-no, it's not part of the culture. The price you see is always the price you pay, except when you're buying jewellery, and even then I don't recommend it.5. Travel in style in a horse-pulled carriageAn interesting way to tour the old part of the city is to take these carriages. Carriagemen dressed in suits and top hats will take you on 10- to 25-minute rides, and give you a sense of what mediaeval Antwerp was like. The smaller carriages seat three to four people, while the larger ones seat up to 10. It costs 13 to 23 euros per carriage, depending on size of carriage and length of ride. There will be carriages leaving from Grote Market daily.6. People-watch at a cafeThere is a real cafe culture in Antwerp, and you can just sit by the sidewalk, have a cappuccino or caffe latte, and people-watch. The gentleman serving you will usually be dressed in a bowtie, white shirt and black trousers. So just take your time and enjoy a relaxing afternoon.
  13. I've already watched it, but it wasn't as good as I expected it to be, so I was quite disappointed. I thought the plot was a bit of a rip-off from Resident Evil actually, but I gave it a shot because I liked these survival horror kind of plots. But the zombies didn't even look scary and the ending is really lame.
  14. Hmm were you drunk went you made this thread? lol Personally, I think it rather pointless to get drunk, for anything, not just New Year. It's just so meaningless to waste time slumping into semi-conscious mode when you could have used the time to have fun with your friends and loved ones. Frankly, I do not see the attraction of alcohol. True, it does help you to loosen up, but if you start talking nonsense, or you can't remember your conversations the next day, then it's just a whole night wasted. Drinking is fine, if you have a high tolerance level for alcohol, but getting drunk is just silly.
  15. Look at other people's websites and you'll get inspired. You should especially visit websites that provide free templates (not portfolios with tiny preview pictures). You'll have a close view of what people have done, the types of designs suited for different types of websites etc. One of my personal faves is http://aethereality.net/ Not sure if you'll like it. Some might find it too girlish and it's mostly anime-themed designs. But anyway, im sure there are lots of free design websites out there that you can check out. I agree with you that designing is harder than coding and i never like changing my website layout. Having good skills in photoshop helps too. Good luck to you in your quest for learning to design!
  16. wow this is the first time I've taken such a quiz! Do share your findings with us! It seems like an interesting project.
  17. I have been to Manila quite a few times, and I went there recently for my Christmas holiday, so I thought I'd share some of the activities and things you should definitely try if you ever go there yourself.1. Try an ensaymadaLike a glorified doughnut with cheese, this is a very popular Filipino pastry that you can find in most pastry shops. Most shops sell it for about 14 Pesos. Alternatively, braver souls can try the balut. It is an egg with an unhatched chick embryo inside it. It costs between 3 and 6 Pesos. Personally, I have not tried the balut, but some of my friends have tried it and claim that it's nice.2. Check out 168 MallLocated in the heart of Divisoria - which is one of the busiest shopping districts of Manila - and along Sta Elena and Soler streets, the mall has over 1,000 stores where you can get bargains at up to 30 or 40 per cent off. If you are the first customer of the day, you can even get a 50 per cent discount as the Filipinos regard their first sale as a blessing.3. Bring home a scale model of the JeepneyOne of the city's most iconic features, it is an adapted version of the American jeep and has been dubbed 'The King of the Road'. It seats about a dozen people and a ride costs only about 0.3 Pesos. A scale model will cost from 230 - 290 Pesos4. Chill at one of the many Figaro cafesIt is a home-grown brand and customers come to people-watch and drink coffee. Figaro is like the Starbucks of Manila. A latte costs about 86 Pesos and a hot chocolate will be about 58 Pesos. Filipinos are hospitable and friendly and go out of their way to make you feel at home, so you can just have a good time lounging in cafes and coffee shops.5. Get a MusicSing MicrophoneGive the Karaoke bars a miss. Instead, do as the locals do and buy a MusicSing Microphone. This is a microphone that has a chip installed to enable it to store up to 500 songs. Just plug it into your television set or your car, punch in the song number and sing. It even rates your singing abilities when you are done. Almost every household in Manila owns one. A standard microphone should cost about 4600 Pesos. You can even bring it home as keepsake.6. Visit the town of TagaytanIt is about one hour away by car to the south of Manila. Many people head there during weekends to have organic food and enjoy the cool weather. The temperature ranges between 16 and 18 deg C. You can rent a car from Avis. You can check out their website http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ for details on rental rates.
  18. I always use Google. It's just a habit that I developed. Besides, the interface looks clean and simple. Results are pretty good too.Yahoo gives good results, sometimes, even results that i don't find on google (i use it when i can't find what i want with google) but i don't like it's interface.
  19. It sounds like she may be suffering under the stress and unhappiness of school and maybe problems with her boyfriend. When spoilt and pampered people face minor problems that we may think nothing of, they lose their heads easily. I agree that you shouldn't give in to her or give her the attention she doesn't deserve. But have you tried talking to her about her life? Like maybe asking her if she is facing any issues in life that's causing her to behave like this, rather than just chiding her for her behavior. She's probably jealous that everybody else around her seems to be having a great life and she's not, that's why she's behaving like this, to attract attention.
  20. Audio ads? I would shut off my speaker permanently. Already I feel like stabbing myself when I accidentally hover my cursor over that stupid smiley banner. I'm not sure about the 100% income for every page view. Sooner or later, advertisers are going to realize their ads aren't reaching out to people as much as they want them to and they'll either lower the payout or change the ad system.
  21. Notice from rvalkass: Even if you wrote it originally, its not original content as it has been posted before. Quote tags added.
  22. Oh! This is something I have always wondered! I post at Chinese forums pretty often, and I always see the first poster type things like 我得到沙发了 (I got the sofa). I dislike it though, because a lot of people just type about getting the 'sofa' and nothing of relevance to the topic, which is blatant spamming (who the heck cares whether you post a reply first if you are just posting something irrelevant right?). Anyway, good to understand! I don't know about the chair, ground or underground bit though. Haven't seen those yet!
  23. Before God made Adam and Eve, He created the Firstborn - a mistake which he banished into the Abyss. Determined to reclaim its birthright, the fallen Firstborn attempts to break into the mortal world in the Middle Eastern city of Al Khali. A team of occult warfare specialists called Jericho is sent to stop it. This is the premise of the survivor-horror squad based first person shooter, Jericho, the work of horror master Clive Barker. Unlike his previous title Undying, which made the bravest gamers tremble in fear, Jericho is scarce on scares but overloads on gore and action. Each Jericho member has specialised occult abilities and weaponry, including an exorcist-healer armed with dual pistols, a mini-gun wielding pyro-magician, astral projecting seer, telekinetic sniper and ninja blood mage. The first few chapters play like a mindless shooter until the turning point when you can possess your squad mates and play them as first person. This innovative mechanism offers excellent varied gameplay and problem solving using a member's speciality to get past certain obstacles or killing monsters. For instance, you can steer the sniper fired bullet manually and land several headshots, while the astral projector can possess an enemy within the line of sight and manipulate him. Sadly, the novelty wears off soon after. Other aspects of Jericho's gameplay are limited. You can only order your squad to stay or follow, there are no equipment or ability upgrades to aspire towards. Maps are linear and claustrophobic, with nothing to explore. During intense combats, your squad is almost always overrun by monsters and your job is to simply dash about reviving teammates. After hours of running through identical maps slaying identical monsters, the repetitive gameplay becomes a bore. Without multiplayer modes, which could have done well in this context, Jericho has almost zero replayability. But Jericho does have some brilliant elements, including interesting characters, great voice acting and haunting musical score accompanied by visually impressive and detailed graphics. Kids, however, should stay away as the game has mature elements like copious swearing, sexual innuendos and gratuitous gore.
  24. I would go, provided I can come back! Exploring space has been one of my fantasies, but I don't fancy getting stuck in space forever!
  25. Notice from rvalkass: If it's available elsewhere on the 'net then it needs to be QUOTED. Source: /search?q=cache:0OUvpt%3Dclnk&gbv=1&sei=C9vtV-TwOcyye4XKspgJ
