  1. Thanks for your advice.I have decided to change over, since my supply of hosting credits have been exhausted. I've noticed that even though the hosting credits are negative for me, my site is still up and running. It seems that the old hosting system has been deleted.
  2. I went to a retail store recently and saw the new Apple MacBook. My opinion is that it looks absolutely fantastic, though I have never bough a Mac computer or notebook before. I especially like the aluminum streamlined bod, which is way superior to the cheap plastic chassis used by most notebooks.
  3. The Applie iPod Nano is not too bad, but I personally wouldn't get one if I was looking for a MP3 / Video player. The design sort of doesn't appeal to me. I would prefer the Apple iPod Touch with a full touch screen instead of a smaller screen and touch wheel, which now looks outdated ever since the Applie iPod Touch and Apple iPhone came out.
  4. I still use the old Hosting Credits system at the moment even though I have signed up to the Credit System V3. The reason is that I don't require any change in hosting plan, so I have decided to continue using my old hosting package with the old system probably until it is phased out or I require additional space / bandwidth offered by the plans attached to the new Credit System.
  5. For me, it is not that much of a use at the current time since I don't need that amount of space or bandwidth. Nevertheless, it is a step forward in filling in the missing hosting plans that clients require that are between those provided in existing plans.
  6. You could developer your own Flash chat room that utilises a database to store messages and PHP for data transfer. On the other hand, you can use Adobe Flex (which uses Flash Player) as the front-end of a Flash chat room application and BlazeDS, a server-based Java remoting and web messaging technology, for the back-end processing. 7. I used Freewebs when I was starting out with webpages and learning the basics of web programming. It was easily managed, but it had ads which were sort of annoying.Since then, I left web programming for a while for software programming, but have now returned back to the web development. I had used various post to host free webhosts, which some of them had shut down and forced me to look elsewhere. Now, I used Xisto, which is reliable and stable as a free webhost.
  8. Nowadays, there seems to be plenty of free premium Wordpress themes floating around, especially on design sites that feature at lot of them at the same time e.g. Smashing Magazine. If you interested in having a look at different excellent free Wordpress themes, take a look at the following link; http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  9. It is not really pratical to use tables anymore in web design, since it has been succeeded by a more acceptable Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). I do recommend that you visit the tutorials in Post #9 for more info about centering in CSS.
  10. I had a quick look at the phpMyAdmin integrated in the cPanel. You can dump an entire database in phpMyAdmin, which you can export as SQL data. This data can be directed copied and pasted into the SQL query section of phpMyAdmin on the server you want to transfer the database to. The SQL data generated can be used to create the database on the other side. Note that you will have to change the database and server connection details in your server-side dynamic pages.
  11. By the look of the site, I wouldn't really be choosing this free web host, as it doesn't really look like a good host from the outside. It lacks a professional look, especially since it uses a web hosting review site that isn't well known (and sort of dodgy in some way) and likely to cause suspicion to viewers.
  12. The iMac is sort of a mid-ranage to lower high-range desktop computer, which sort of makes the Mac Mini look underpowered. I suggest that you purchase an iMac, for a more streamline Mac desktop computer, if you intend to use graphic intensive applications such as Adobe Photoshop.Personally, I feel the Mac mini is rather underpowered compared with the rest of the Mac range of products and is unlikely to run well from you are running CPU or graphics-intensive applications.
  13. It is best to choose some well-known brands for your USB 2.0 External Hard Disk Drive, as it is usually easier to claim warranty and to get support. Examples of brands of USB 2.0 External HDDs are Seagate, Maxtor, Buffalo and Western Digital.Another option would to buy a external Hard Disk Drive Enclosure and then fit it with a normal computer hard disk. However, these enclosures tend to be bulky compared to streamlines integrated External HDDs and most enclosures require AC power i.e. from a powerpoint instead of being fully powered by USB ports.
  14. The BIOS on my computer can be reset by pressing a button on the motherboard 'Reset CMOS', but this method is only available on new motherboards with onboard diagnostic features. You could also reset the CMOS / BIOS by removing the CMOS battery from the motherboard for 15-30 minutes, or by triggering the CMOS jumper on the motherboard. For more info, a good source of information on resetting the BIOS is: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  15. Currently, in the configure mail client section in the cPanel page, the following settings are listed: Unfortunately, I have found that most of these settings do not work. The following settings have instead worked for me: Note: @ is written as (at) for anti-spam purposes. Firstly, if I log into the incoming mail server with the default 'nxdev' username into the incoming mail server, I find that none of the messages are downloaded from the server to the email client, as the emails for 'charles(at)nxdev.com' are stored in a separate folder not accessible by the mail client but accessible in the webmail (except RoundCube which doesn't seem to support the folder). So I did some testing and found that 'charles+nxdev' (the cPanel suggested username) didn't work but 'charles(at)nxdev.com' was a valid login username for the mail server. Then for the outgoing mail server, neither 'charles(at)nxdev.com' nor 'charles+nxdev' (cPanel suggested) worked for sending an email through SMTP at all, resulting in a login failure each time. Then I tried the default 'nxdev' which worked well without any errors. Also, only the mail server 'gamma.xisto.com' worked and not the 'mail.nxdev.com'. Is their currently problem with the configuration of the mail servers and with cPanel itself? Thanks for your assistance.
  16. I used to use Windows Live Skydrive as storage space and backup some of my important documents and bookmarks / favourites. However, I stopped using it when I joined the Live Mesh Technical Preview (run by Microsoft) which I have setup to automatically synchronise my files (including documents and Onenote notebooks) to the online Live Desktop, where the files are stored online on Microsoft servers. At the current time, you can only sync folder and files between the Live Desktop and a PC running Windows XP or Vista, but development is carried out to allow synchronisation between the Live Desktop, mobile devices and Macs. I have found this Live Mesh service to be a free and effective way of backing my files automatically online, without need for user interaction i.e. the Live Mesh service automatically runs in the background and synchronises the files when changes are made. I use it to supplement the automatic Norton Ghost backups to my secondary hard disk. More information: https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-us/ Note: I am not sure whether you can get into the technical preview at the current time, but try anyway by clicking the link at the bottom "Get an early look for developers".
  17. I think you will just have to manually right-click each contact to be deleted and press 'Delete contact'. Unfortunately, there is no quick way of doing so unless you write your own program that utilise the MSN protocol to delete those contacts. I'm sure doing manually won't take a lot of time, unless you have lots of contacts to delete. It maybe faster to make a new group and drag all the unwanted contacts into the group, and then deleting the group.
  18. I would say that Skype is one of the best VoIP calling software around. At the moment, I only use PC-to-PC calling which is free and does not cost anything except internet bandwidth fees for your Internet Service Provider. However, I know Skype has some calling packages that have unlimited calls (within limit) at a fixed price if you call a lot. If not, you can use their normal system of paying by the minute of the call, which isn't that high compared to traditional call rates, especially with international calls.
  19. I am using Paypal at the moment, although there have been numerous complaints about frozen accounts and unauthorised transactions about. Paypal is one of the most common payment methods on e-commerce and other internet sites, most of which don't offer other smaller online payment processors like E-gold and Stormpay. It is just unfortunately that there is no better online payment processor available around that is widely supported. The only other way to pay online would be to use credit cards, debit cards or Western union transfers.
  20. The state education system in NSW, Australia is being changed from a Microsoft Exchange hosted mail system to a Google Apps-based. The main reason for the change was that the Google Apps-based mail system (which will be developed by a third-party) is that it was cheaper for the licence to run. Unfortunately, the mail system will still be monitored by the DET IT staff. More information: http://downtime.zdnet.com/zdnet/downtime.html
  21. Maybe having an integrated spelling and grammar checker in the reply box of the Xisto forum would improve the quality of the language and make the posts look more professional, although I don't think anyway has invented an online spelling and grammar checker yet.
  22. It is absolutely certain that some people will lose their jobs in this current global financial crisis, although some people have more secure jobs which they are less likely to lose if a recession was to occur. The job loss is just really a flow-on effect from reduced consumer spending in uncertain times. Reduced consumer spending results in less profits for businesses, who to ensure profitability decrease production of goods and services. This drop in production involves the reduction in the number of staff to meet a lower demand for goods and services, thus the end result in the loss of jobs.
  23. An interesting and fantastic summary of how Xisto was born! After reading the post, I realised that it must have been hard work and dedication needed to setup Xisto and finally now Xisto, not only financially but physically and mentally.
  24. When I am typing a post, I have the English (Australian) dictionary installed as an extension in Firefox which checks my spelling as I type. Generally, I don't have to correct anything, although I may occasionally mistype or misspell some words. Typing fast tends to cause more errors in my typing, so I like typing a steady pace that is not too fast or too slow.In terms of posts made on Xisto, I feel that it is better than posts in other forums, where posts are less professional in their layout and structure, and have more of the internet slang words used regularly throughout posts.
  25. Astahost has been one of the most reliable and stable free web host I have ever used. It is one of the best post-to-host sites, especially since the implementation of the new Credit system, which allows you redeem your earned myCENTs for various services and not just limited to basic free web hosting. If I had the opportunity, I would surely recommend Xisto, or Xisto for that matter, to anyone in need of free web hosting. Hopely, Xisto will last for at least a few more years if not forever!
