  1. I would also prefer the iPhone 3GS over any of the smartphones available on the market. Simply, it is really feature-rich plus you can purchase new applications easily through the App store. The recent update gave it better graphics performance and added a compass on top of the GPS and accelerometers already in the hardware setup.I suppose a big negative of these smartphones is the price, though you get more functions and usage out of smartphones. If I had to pick out of the three listed, I would choose the Sony Ericsson IDOU. The Palm Pre's curved and round shape doesn't quite suit my tastes, neither does the slide out keyboard on the Nokia N97.
  2. You would need a router to efficiently share the Internet connection between the two devices. Sharing the Internet by connecting one computer to the Internet and then connecting the two computers is not very efficient and requires the first computer to be turned on in order to use the Internet.
  3. In a normal situation, the most option to share a printer is either to buy a wireless printer (Many new models are coming out with inbuilt wireless) or a networked print utilising an Ethernet connection. However, you may also want to look at a network USB hub to share USB devices like external hard disk drives and printers across a network (In this case, you would only need to install the relevant driver software that comes with the network USB hub in order to access those networked USB devices).
  4. If you want the fastest wireless speeds, you should first upgrade to Wireless-N, the newest standard that is unfortunately still in draft status. Wireless-N has a theoritical throuhput of 600Mbit/s compared to the low 54 Mbits/s of the Wireless G standard. However, you should check if your wireless devices are compatible with the Wireless-N specification before purchasing a Wireless-N router of access point. Also, wireless speeds also depend on the brand and make of your wireless router or access points, with some performing a lot better than others. I find that D-Link routers, especially ones with more than one antenna have better range and performance, with other brands like Netgear and Linksys having routers with slower performing wireless connections. I am personally using the D-Link Xtreme N Duo Media Router DIR-855 (currently quite expensive as it is one of the best avaiable) which features simulatenous dual-band wireless, Gigabit Ethernet and network USB sharing.
  5. I would not recommend anyone download this, as it is not official and may contain malware. Also the blog post is a direct copy and paste of: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  6. It is actually quite easy to upload files onto the Internet. If you are looking just to upload a few files to share with others and don't want to set up your own webspace, see the following instructions:1. Go to a filehost like Rapidshare.com or MediaFire.com.2. Usually you find an upload box or a link to the upload page on the front page.3. Select the file you want to upload.4. After the upload to the filehost finishes, you should be presented with the download link and usually also a delete/kill link (to delete the file from the filehost when requried).5. Share the download link with other users and keep the delete/kill for future references.Be aware that most filehosts will delete your file is it is inactive i.e. not downloaded after a number of days. Also, remember not to upload anything that you don't own the copyright too, because not only will your file be deleted by the filehosts, you may get prosecuted and sued for piracy.
  7. The term uncapping in Australia usually is used by people who get capped at a certain speed for overusing their allocated bandwidth and get uncapped at the end of the month when the billing cycle ends and a new cycle starts. The physical speed limit of an Internet connection really only depends on the wire or fibre capacity of the Internet Service Provider, factors that are out of your control. I suppose if your want better speeds you would have to pay more for higher level services such as those sold to large corporations.
  8. Although I don't use Facebook, I did read a lot about the user uproar around the Internet in teh blogosphere when Facebook tried to introduce the new Terms of Service, after it changed to TOS to give itself permanent rights to user content. Unfortunately in the present time, legal documents have become a part of everyday activities as companies seek to control what they believe is rightfully theirs.
  9. I don't think works anymore, since I am sure Megaupload would reserve these download lines for their premium subscribers. According to the premium membership chart, non-members cannot resume downloads or utilise downloaded accelerators, while free members can resume downloads but still not use downloaded accelerators. @callisto, You might need to enable the use of cookies in Flashget, which would allow Flashget to get the essential login data in order to be able to use Megaupload's download accelerator functions. Accorind to Megaupload's own Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ, http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/), it says that any download manager can be used, but it recommends that you use their branded Mega Manager, which includes special features that make it easier to download from Megaupload.
  10. I would say the MySQL is indeed the most commonly used database software, especially in conjuction with web servers. On the other hand, for desktop applications like Mozilla Firefox 3, SQLite is a great database engine that can be run on demand without using much memory and does not need to be running continously. Another advantage of SQLite is that it is free to use and implement with any software development project, compared to MySQL and other commerical database software which require license fees when using the software in a commerical or business environment. However, it should be noted that SQLite is not suitable for use in a web environment.
  11. Doesn't 11268 seconds = 3.13 hours? (The 11268 is in seconds, not minutes. So, 11268 /60 /60 = 3.13) Anyway, the flood control is really to prevent people from spamming away in the shoutbox, and forcing users to 'think' about what they are about to right.
  12. I think the old hosting system has officially been shut down, so you would need to enable myCENTs in order to earn cents towards your hosting account. Xisto - Support are excellent in their response times and customer service, but this usually depends on your local time zone and the time zone of the support staff.
  13. Volume licensing keys don't usually have limits if it was purchased by a large company or educational organisation, but once piracy is detected, the key would be removed from normal use and marked as pirated. With volume licensing keys, the hardware configuration does not need to be the same for all the computers using that key, but for a normal individual license, the exact same hardware must be used. For example, you could install the individual licence on another partition on the same computer and still be able to activate it, as it is essentially the same hardware. However, activating the licence on another computer with the same hardware configuration is unlikely the work as different hardware is used.
  14. The safest option is to just Windows shutdown in its own time. Forcing it to shutdown can cause complications later as it forces open programs to exit immediately and would result in possible data loss. The registry setting ClearPageFileAtShutdown is more of a security option. It replaces the data in the page files with zeroes to prevent other processes from accessing the data in the page file. I suppose if you are fine with turning off a security option to increase shutdown speed, you may as well go ahead and tweak it.
  15. With a quick Google search, this seems to be a problem with network-related drivers. Try updating with new drivers for your network card / inbuilt chip.Previously, I had a similiar Bluescreen of Death (BSOD) because of a faulty and problematic Realtek network driver. Updating it with the newest version of the driver downloaded from the Realtek website worked and I have not have a BSOD ever since. Do be careful of updating Realtek network using Windows Update, since it once tried to update my network drivers to the older problematic driver version.
  16. Are you sure sites are blocked in command prompt? This is higly unlikely since there is no such built-in feature. He is probably using running a external program to filter URLs using a blacklist or whitelist, or using the default Windows HOSTS file to redirect some of your URL requests to a none existent website.
  17. The chance of recovery of your 30GB data partition is quite slim, because most of the stuff would have been overwritten when the ghost image was restored onto it. You may want to try undelete software or maybe the Seagate File Recovery software (http://www.seagate.com/services-software/recover/). However, it is highly unlikeley the undeleting software will work, because they rely of data not being overwritten after deletion, because when you delete a file in Windows, the data block is designated empty, but the actual is still there until it is overwritten.
  18. What brand and model is the mouse causing the problem? (By the way, this should be the first thing you should mention when asking for help with hardware issues)With Microsoft-branded mouse utilising the Intellipoint driver software, a specific mode called Precision Mode can be toggled, which slows the mouse considerably to increase 'precision' e.g. when drawing. Also, slow speed while using a wireless mouse may indicate a low battery level for the mouse..
  19. I have never heard of Hi5.com , especially now that Facebook and Myspace have becoome the more common places where the school community hangs out these days. Being a computer guy, I tend rather to hang out on Twitter and Digg social networks instead.
  20. I have a HP LaserJet 3052 as my multi-function black&white laser printer, while I also have a Epson Stylus Photo R390 for colour inkjet printing. The HP works fine, except for some occasionally startup issues fixed by restarting the machine. I particularly like the multi-function feature, allowing me to scan and photocopy pages. The Epson printer is excellent too, except for the fact that it was pulled from the printer lineup a few months after purchase.I would go for HP for laser printers and Epson for inkjet printers.
  21. You might want to try the database hosted at: http://finder.insidepro.com/ If you can't find your password / hash set in the database, you may want to try posting at: https://forum.insidepro.com/index.php?c=3 to get some password recovery assistance for free.
  22. The best way to earn money from a website is to actually sell a product of some sort e.g. Wordpres themes. Earning money from ads is very difficult unless you have a high traffic site like a popular blog.
  23. The site at the moment looks a bit plain with the generic Blogger template. Maybe you could add a better looking logo first, then build the site theme around that.
  24. I would say that the current Xisto logo also doesn't look professional. It would look much better if the font for the text 'Xisto' was san-serif instead of a serif font. However, the glow effect is quite good as it increases the intensity of the logo without diminishing the contrast. On the topic, the font looks a bit too 'curvy' which sort of leans it towards being appropriate more for a personal site. Also, the blue colour might look a bit too light and suit a more 'fun' tone than one of professionalism. Nevertheless, it is a good attempt at creating a logo though.
  25. As the saying goes, "nothing is ever free". There is always a cost to any so-called 'free' stuff, which in this case is adware that is installed with the Smileys . Although it isn't a virus or worm, it will make more ads appear on your computer.
