Introducing Opera! The Fastest Web Browser On Earth! as they say..
darran replied to braitt's topic in The Internet
I think what we all expect to see is the compatibility between browsers and websites. There are a lot of websites out there especially Intranets of educational institutes which cannot be displayed on Firefox or Opera but only IE. So you can imagine how slow the developers are. That is the reason why I did not change to Opera, Firefox is secure and fast, on top of that it is so easily customizable with skins and add ons. I would not say the same for IE 7. -
The best way to gain weight is to have a balanced diet but also have lots of meals a day, there is no point in gouging yourself in a single meal. And also do lots of work outs, muscles weigh more than fats, so in that way you have accomplished 2 objectives, 1) to gain weight 2) to look better. You should never fail to have a healthy lifestyle even if gaining weight is probably something you are trying to accomplish.

I am not so sure about Wordpress being a content management system which you can customise to your site. I am using Wordpress for my blog and I believe you have to alter the theme to be able to use it. You can't make a news system using the same layout unless you create a skin which can be used on your main page as well as on your news area.

I am studying to become a mobile applications developer and I have been working on a J2ME application in recent weeks when I have had the time, but considering I have to work everyday, I could only dedicate snippets of my time at night, and during the weekends. But after several weeks, I have more or less completed this application. I have just left out some enhancements implementation but 85% of it is completed and I want to get your review. And in case you are wondering what is J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition), similar to J2SE, but it is lighter and it is the programming language to program MIDlets as I like to call it or software to put into your mobile phone. How do you install a mobile application, download its .jar file and run it in your mobile phone, it should prompt you to install it in your desired location; be it memory stick or phone memory. Alright as the name suggests, this is a BMICalculator and this is the very first application I am programming using the J2ME Canvas API. I will be going into more details about it later on. You enter your weight and height, very simple things and it calculates your BMI. But what seperates this application from those normal ones you see out there is the interface, which I have spent a lot of time doing to emulate a software rather than the common mobile applications you see in terms of navigation. The J2ME Canvas API is used to have full control of the design. So whatever you see on the screen are designed by me, every single thing. There is no generic buttons, text or even word wrap, all these were done by me. However as for the word wrap, I have to give credit to the open source code to handle it. So please download this application, and test it out, give me your feedback too. So I can further improve it and move closer to the official version of 1.0. Do not worry about this application containing any virus because I have already tested it on my mobile; Sony Ericsson K800 and on another phone, Nokia 6280 and it is working fine. I programmed this application based on the 240 * 320 pixels resolution but I am looking to have this application cross-platform enabled, so do try to test it on your phone. But I would recommend a starting width resolution of 180 pixels or more. Do note that this application was solely done by me, and that it wasn't copied from anywhere. To download this application, click on the above link http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Hope to be seeing some positive and negative feedback

I do a lot of J2ME programming, java on a mobile but I am confused as to where I should post threads relating to it to? I want to share my application and get some feedback on it, so should I post it in the mobile or java programming or software?

When I was in secondary school (high school in other countries), there wasn't much computer lessons, we only had 2 computer labs and this labs will be booked by teachers to teach their lesson, not on computers but on their respective subjects, incorporating IT into it. Definitely technology is very quickly seeping into our society, and I feel that even at high school the students need to be exposed to technology. Wireless is just so convenient, imagine kids saving up to 300 dollars a semester, not having to buy any textbook, everything could be available online. As far as I know in Singapore, they are trying to bring this to reality for high school students to be equipped with a laptop and attend class whereby an online portal is available for the students. However I think the reason why this is taking so long to be implemented is due to the cost, imagine this: 10 000 students, each with a laptop of 2000 dollars for a decent one and on top of that, the software licenses and network construction, how many access points would they need to build for internet connectivity anywhere in the school? The biggest concern I have about students in high school at least the lower grade ones, is that they do not have the discipline to actually concentrate in class with the laptop in front of them. They could very well surf youtube.com .... etcEven in my tertiary institution, there are a handful of people not listening to lessons but instead are chatting on MSN. This has to do with their discipline. However expect technology in high school to be used rapidly, very soon and surely each student will have a laptop for himself and the use of notes, worksheets and textbooks would be abolished, everything would be done using their online portal system. We have an online portal where you read announcements, download project files, lecture notes and tutorials from, a student email and wireless connectivity. Quizzes were taken through this portal and our only form of writing was during examinations (yes this is not gone even when technology is involved) and during lessons when we needed to take notes in hard copy form.

I have just completed a 2.4 km run for my physical fitness test, and I recorded a timing of 11.28 mins. In theory, that would be a grade C, I improved my target by about 0.12 mins. I did not suffer any major stitches during the run, in fact I did suffered a little but the pain was very minimal. It was as though I did not feel it at all. The key was not breathing, I tried different variations of breathing but it did not help. I did lots of stretching especially on the abdominal area, and it really killed the stitches Thanks for all your advice, I think I can now run without any worries of having stitches.

I know for a fact that all hosted sites at Xisto.com are using the gamma servers and although the downtime is very short, but I would like to not see my site go down so often. Is there a way for us to actually move to another server for free? I know Xisto - Web Hosting.com uses the alpha server but until I get a credit card, it is unlikely I would be able to move to Xisto - Web Hosting.com and to a better server.

Protecting A Directory From Deliberate Access how do i do it?
darran replied to darran's topic in Web Hosting Support
I remembered the way to stop bruteforce, would be to disable any login attempts if the user fails to type in the right password in 3 attempts. I do not know whether this is implemented in CPanel though or is this a feature we would have to implement ourselves? -
I do not think high school is a waste of time, the basic subjects you learn in junior school perhaps are english, maths, science and a couple of other languages? High school or secondary school as I call it would better prepare you for college. When you have just graduate from junior school, you are about 12? Most of us would not be mature enough to be handling 6 project deadlines in 2 weeks, your academic results is impressive, 3.5 is something which you have to average a B+ in every subject. But do note that in my tertiary institution, there are people who average 4.0 in every subject, so there is always somebody better than you. You are still young, enjoy your high school and have fun because as you grow older, you will find that you wished that you have done this and that when you were younger, high school is the time to do that. Enjoy yourself and the process of growing up, no need to rush into becoming an adult so quickly. High school isn't about academic results only. And like what was mentioned in the other post, you would not know what to do when you are 12. A lot of us aspire to be this and that, but as you grow older, these dreams/aspirations change. I am not saying all of us are like this, but this is what I have been through and experienced. When I was young, I aspire to be an Astronaut because I was so fascinated with the galaxy, in particular comets, asteroids and meteors. But as I grew older, I realized that this was not possible, how big a chance do you have out of the billions of people who could get a chance to be an astronaut, and furthermore how are you going to get noticed if your country does not have a facility to train us to be astronauts? And the most wonderful thing of my life came from the experience in high school, crushes and love. You are walking into the classroom and you would be thinking whether there would be any hot girls in the same class as you, or whether you are handsome enough to attract those cute babes. The sweet chase of you thinking whether that girl likes me or not. And though all these experiences can also be emulated in the later stage of your life, but at the point of high school, this is when our emotions rise, our hormones grow and our curiosity reaches its boiling point. So just sit back relax, enjoy your younger years because this is the moments you will cherish when you get older. At least for me.

Protecting A Directory From Deliberate Access how do i do it?
darran replied to darran's topic in Web Hosting Support
Then it should be secure from the looks of things? They not only need a password to access the directory but also even if they do, they can't view the contents, the only way they can get the files are through FTP access. Is there anyway ANYONE could break through the security I have implemented though? -
Protecting A Directory From Deliberate Access how do i do it?
darran replied to darran's topic in Web Hosting Support
Thanks guys for the suggestions, I have implemented the webprotect, a password to access the folder and also the indexing of files is off, so people cannot download it, but just to make sure. Can you test the folder? http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ -
I am a noob when it comes to hosting stuff. I want to protect my files I have hosted, but I am not sure how to go about doing this. I want to host all my J2ME source code in that particular directory but at the same time, I do not want people to simply access the page and then take the file as they please. I have seen this kind of security measure when you type a certain directory folder e.g. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ he would not be able to get a file listing directory but instead, an error message. Can someone guide me on how to achieve this?

Hosting Credits / Adverts if they expire
darran replied to caos dreamer's topic in Web Hosting Support
Trap17 has 2 directions: adless and with ads. Of course being adless, there is a price to be paid and that is the posting requirement, the more longer the post, the more credits you get. And with ads, you don't need to post. Of course most of us choose the first option which is to be adless, who would want a website to be filled with ads not related to the content you are thinking of putting on the site? This suggestion would be useful but it is not viable for the reason that it goes against the direction/motto of Xisto.com which is adless. To make yourself free from all these risk, I would suggest you to simply have the habit of visiting the forum regularly, not necessarily everyday but maybe every few days and a week and simply post quality posts and you will be fine. I have been here since 31st August and I have had some emergencies where I had to be away from the forums but I had no problems as I have always been a regular visitor of this forum. -
In short 2 important software Get a good firewall (Comodo Firewall - Best free firewall I know) Get a good anti-virus (AVG) It is going to be paid on february 18th but it is well worth it Or why not buy their antivirus at a cost of US38.95, it costs about SGD 60, I will buy it soon enough. And a very simple advice is not visit sites you do not know or open attachments you are unsure of. That has got me through 9 years of surfing on the internet without getting any viruses to my computer. Spyware is plenty though, but who doesn't get it?

Interracial Relationships.. Problem Or Not A Problem?
darran replied to qu33n.Bee//x's topic in Dating And Relationships
I tend to disagree with you, I find America as a role example because often so, I see black and white people together as a couple, I wished that would be the case in Singapore. There are very very few inter-racial couples here in Singapore and when there is, people around us stare. I am also in an inter-racial relationship for 4 years + now and I really do not appreciate the stares I get just because I am with someone of a different race. I made a thread similar to this before and I was very happy to know that 99.9% of the replies I got were from people who could accept such a relationship. There is still an enormous number of people who cannot accept inter-racial relationships, many a times it is because of people being too stuck on their own race. -
Hmmm ... I suppose you could use maybe 10 pt Arial or somethign like that? The courier text just doesn't look like a fitting ending to each entry of your tutorials at all. I like the new combination on the background, it really helps to distinguish between what is the content and background. Good job mate!A RSS would be good, helps people like me who makes use of RSS to keep track of the latest updates to blogs. Just some questions though: How do you create RSS for your site? I have always been fascinated as to how this RSS feed is created to dynamically track your latest entries. What CMS are you using? It doesn't look like you are using Wordpress.

This kid who did a few thousand pull ups MUST be very strong for his size, very flexible (I have seen those really flexible people e.g. gymnasts do lots of pulls up easily, they do not even need to have a huge muscle mass) and light.I can only do 11 repetitions at maximum without any rest in between. I don't know why the minute I stop, I seem to lose all energy with which to pull myself up again. I do lots of push ups and bench presses to train my pull ups though.

The Future Of Mobile Phones It seems to be getting better, and better...
darran replied to Laos's topic in Mobile Phones
Basically, phones are upgrading really quickly and advancing very fast in terms of technology, just yesterday Bluetooth seems to be a very new technology, but now almost everyone I know has a phone with bluetooth capabilities. Phones are slowly becoming mini-computers, in the past they were big bulky PDAs, but now more and more phones are become 'smarter', in the form of Smart phones. 1 fine example, the Nokia N series, powered by the Symbian OS which is something like a mini computer. However I am quite disappointed with the development speed of mobile applications on the mobile phones, they have not yet taken off as quickly as mobile games. I was part of a project team collaborating with Siemens to develop a 3G mobile application, lets just say it is a community related application, I do not want to go into too much details. It did not attract much interest at all, at least in my country. -
I have heard of DFX for Windows Media Player and tried it in the past, but the reason why I don't use it anymore is because of at times the quality of the sound has funny noises, and it was pretty irritating. Laptop's sound are generally softer, but perhaps you can buy some enhancements to hear your sound better like a headphone or a earpiece, those devices will allow you to hear sounds which are generally louder than simply depending on a mere generic speaker from your laptop/

While shopping for a new desktop/laptop, I have never seen one which uses an AMD processors, so I reckon the only way for us to get an AMD is if we customly create our computers, am I right to say this? Plus I am thinking of getting a Mac just as soon as I save enough money but then again, they are being built on Intel processors, so how can anyone suggest the way to go with AMD for Mac?

What Do You Think About Vista? ....lets say everything abou VISTA
darran replied to ejafa's topic in General Discussion
I think Vista is too graphics intensive, Windows XP is the furthest I am going to go with Windows. After that, I am hopping onto Mac. I predict Vista is just not going to live up to what it has promised, typical Windows. IE 7 is already a poor example of that, Firefox 2 totally beats IE 7 in every aspect. And imagine the need for 1 GB just to run Vista at the minimum requirement? -
Unfortunately, these problems can only be solved by the manufacturer of your laptop. The keyboard is nothing like the desktop's keyboard, when spoilt you can head downtown and buy a replacement for a cheap price. You should check whether you are still under warranty for your laptop if not you are going to have to pay a price.
