  1. Yeah, I love 7-Zip; it can open all of those .tar.gz archives (which only *nix based systems would be able to open otherwise). It's a little confusing at first, but you get used to the way it works, and I didn't even need admin priveleges to install it (my computer is somewhat locked down - my dad doesn't trust me with computers, based on what I have done to other computers; let's not get into that).
  2. I heard that FIOS isn't fiber optic into your house, but they use fiber to the curbsdie. As far as the wall jack thingy goes - I have no clue. It's probably a different connector than a phone line. Hey, you also get a free modified D-Link wireless router with the installation - a good bonus for sharing the service in your house. After looking at a fact sheet for the router, I think that the wall jack is an ethernet jack. Sounds weird to me. See http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ for more.
  3. I wouldn't think that Apple would get aroung to reading your post, but I have sympathy on you. Personally, I think of the Mac as yet another type of computer, having its own way of doig things (like Unix and Linux, etc.) and its own price tag.
  4. As far as free hosts come by - only Xisto reaches the level that it is on. For paid hosting, try Xisto - Web Hosting (really cheap, helps support Xisto) or 1&1, which is also really cheap,m but has tons of space and bandwidth, and free domains. But really, Xisto is the bomb.
  5. I am also a student in high school, and manage to get my work done, eat and post on the Trap almost every night. You don't really have to post a ton, just one or two a day. Anyway, goodbye, and good luck in your studies.
  6. I don't know much about Sophos (other than the fact that it exists), but I know that Symantec is a pain in the [you know what]. I have supported Trend Micro (which I think Hotmail uses) and eTrust EZ Antivirus (from Computer Associates) which both aren't memory hungry or really annoying.
  7. sxtloverboy: Mambo and Joomla are pretty much the same, except Joomla is the newer versions of Mambo (I don't know the details, look on joomla.org for details).arnz: Mambo is quite easy to use after a little learning. And yes I have noticed that there aren't many modules and components, but know know how it compares to other CMSs. PHPNuke seems very confusing to me. Coding - I could never (OK, maybe not never, but it would take a while), write my own CMS from scratch. But good luck with your site though.
  8. Nice how-to pbrugge. The tip for mounting in fstab is really useful. Also, on SuSE, there is a package manager in YaST, which greatly simplifies installing RPM packages. I bought SuSE Linux 9.1 Professional at CompUSA a few years back for about $90, and it came with 5 CDs, 2 double-sided DVD (for 64 bit systems), and 2 manuals (plus a little SuSE sticker that I put on the front of my machine).
  9. I don't know whether I have been getting MORE spam, but I didn't realize the fact that a robots.txt file could block them. And besides, who says that the spambots have to follow the file? Thanks Dooga for that suggestion.
  10. Overall answers: LightScribe is black and white only. You can buy the media at many online retailers (type lightscribe dvd or cd into Froogle or PriceGrabber), and the burning process takes time. The label is on a gold colored surface, and won't peel like paper labels.
  11. ActiveX controls are programming bits (aka classes) that implement a certain function. Examples: the timer control, common dialog control (shows the Open and Save As dialogs, as well as the color picker and Print dialogs), and even the textboxes on Web pages can be implemented as controls. An ActiveX control can do anything that your user priveleges (if you use Windows NT/2000/XP) allow you to do, or can do anything (under 95/98/Me, the most insecure operating systems ever created, even XP Home Edition is better a security than them).
  12. How do you change your user title? I never noticed that feature anywhere in the User Control Panel. And the little boxes that you mentioned are really just asterisk characters.
  13. I was looking around at the posts in the free hosting request section (just for fun), and noticed a major problem with the applications. For every application that is made, the email address of that applicant is shown to the world, including SPAMBOTS!!! This is a major flaw in the aplication process, and will lead to increase levels of spam in every member's inbox. This is the only thing that is wrong with any part of the Xisto site. Notice from BuffaloHELP: Editing topic title
  14. Yeah, I registered for it, but I haven't got my invitation yey (similar to the way that it took months to get my Gmail invite). It sounds like a good service, and hopefully I can use it to replace my Statcounter.com account (where I can only log 100 pageloads per project).
  15. My three prefered methods of shutting down:1) Start -> Shutdown (or Turn Off Computer)2) Press (do not hold) the power button. Same result as going number 1 above.3) Hold power button (only used when system is not responding).I never pull the plug on my machine. I will always let some type of software (Windows or the BIOS) shutdown my computer.
  16. Supposedly the cPanel team (http://cpanel.com/) will come out with a Windows version of cPanel and/or WHM some time. I haven't noticed any change in the status of the Windows version, so it may be ages before it'll come out. The only other solution I know of is Zpanel (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/, which doesn't have email, and requires PHP and MySQL (both of which run on Windows).
  17. Can you harvest the login code and cookie checker from the IPB code? It's most defenitely copyrighted I bet. You could attempt to make your own code that looks for the IPB login cookie, and will make it if you login from the site. As far as the chat goes, cookies from one domain name won't work on another, but you could probably make an additional cookie that works on the other domain. Just some tips; I don't know PHP really.
  18. A) The labels that you make are completely monoscale (no color) When I said I meant that he is mentioning to the public that he makes illegal copies of software, and that OpaQue or another admin will kick him off XistoLightScribe discs are just plain CD-Rs and DVD+Rs, with a laser-printable label surfaces. Other than that, it's just a normal disc.
  19. Yeah, finding a CM is hard at first. My suggestion: Use Fantastico to install one at a time, and see if you like it. If not, just uninstall it from the same page you installed it from. I used to use Mambo (and still do, for my school's site), but then I either got board, or found some thing wrong (actually, after I moved from my old host, the tabs in the console wouldn't appear, and ehat would be in the tabs were just a long list
  20. Don't use IPB. As I experienced here, IPB is slow, and has lots of hard to find features. I personally use SMF (Simple Machines Forum, http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/), which is fast and easy to use. It takes just a bit of learning to use, but the interface is very organized, and it's really fast. Bs=est of all, it's free and can be installed in Fantastico.
  21. He should really get like three life sentences for that - what a dingbat!!! Why on earth would someone be playing with a defribillator? Or any other mediacal equipment for that matter?
  22. You can buy LightScribe discs online, from HP or other retailers. But no, they run about a dollar a disc (with a case). I haven't had any fading problems (with the one disc I made), and found that the labeling process takes some time to work. Ripped games-your post will probably get deleted, and account terminated for writing that.
  23. I tried the Netscap 8.0 browser, and decided that Netscape 7.2, which I currently use (and almost love), is better. I find Netscape 8 really bulky, and previously useful features (like the buddy list in the sidebar) are either gone or hard to find. I really couldn't care for the MultiBar or Site Controls, which I find practically useless. Maybe if Microsoft would get their act together we wouldn't have these problems of the browser wars.
  24. Contrary to what most people believe, the PHPGoogle script isn't a search engine. Rather, it is a interface to the Google API, which uses Google's index. Once again, the script does not search your site - it uses the Google Web service to get the search results from Google. You aren't making a search engine. I thought that his layout on the results page was a copright infringement. Oh well, there goes another nice script.
  25. In Fantastico, you can easily uninstall phpBB. Just go to the install page, and under Current Installations, click Uninstall next to the directory/subdomain in the area under the description paragraph. You can also do this for any other Fantastico script.
