  1. I have noticed a speed increase, taking a few seconds less for pages to load. Way to go OpaQue!!! Hopefully the increased GHz will help keep things running smoothly.
  2. I say they both stink. Their interfaces are horrible, and they can be very slow in some cases. I like SMF because it's fast, XHTML compliant, and it has a very nice looking admin panel, plus the fact that it's FREE! I also suggest vBulletin, which has a nice UI and little perks that combine to make it overall great. The only problem is that its expensive like IPB.
  3. Sorry to hear about your "computer-less" period. Did you have a surge protector when the lighting hit? I don't know what my warranty covers, bt HP won't even sell us an extended warranty in NY (I heard that it's like that because people in NYC are careless towards computers).
  4. That's probably an off-topic question, but it is a satelite image viewer. You can see pretty clear pictures of most neighborhoods, as well as various sightseeing places. You can download it for free, but you need Windows 2000 or XP and a broadband connection to use it (it downloads a ton of images; and by the time you start adding all the layers such as streets, buildings, etc. you have downloaded around 50 MB in just one run of the program).
  5. Oh yes, I too downloaded CamStudio. It's very nice looking, and doesn't even require admin priveleges to install. I also like the flash converter tool that it includes.
  6. I got a topic reply notification today for a post in the Xisto forum, albait that forum had a different URL; it is accessible through http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. This one had a different default theme (it was the IPB theme), and all the last posts were in November, 2005. I looked at my credits on the home page, and they were around -42.80. This alarmed me until I looked in my address bar and noticed the different URL to the forum. Why was I still recieving reply notifications from that board, when I haven't visited that board in a long time (if ever?)? Could one of the admins please resolve this issue?
  7. I saw Area 51 very clearly last night. Google Earth has much newer images, so as you would expect you see much more. I haven't treid looking up Area 51 on Microsoft's sites (MSN, Windows live Local, etc) but I'm sure that those areas are garbage on the MS sites, especially since they have plain old black and white photos.
  8. I've been using windows since Windows 3.1 (although I was quite young at the time-5 or 6 years old). I've used every version since then (95, 98, ME, 200 at school, XP at home and at relative's homes), and the knowledge has come to me over many years. I did have 2 1/2 hours of patience installing SuSE linux, but my patience is geenerally rather limited. BTW, can I use the VM player on Windows 98 to run SuSE linux from a partition of it's own?
  9. There's also Camtasia, which I'm sure is very expensive, but (as far as I can tell, after seeig Bob Taylor's LearnVisualStudio.net videos) is very professional. You can make slides, screencams, and have voice recording.
  10. It's so whacky that you can't click the Customize Desktop button in Display Properties...I always thought that you could get it done through there.
  11. If you CHMOD a folder to 755, that means you can browse through that folder. Makes sense because you can't execute a folder (although I originally thought that it meant that any file in a folder with 755 permissions can be executed).
  12. Do you want to use the response.redirect() method? if so then try this maybe: response.redirect("newpage.asp?username=" & server.urlencode(request.form("username")) & "&password=" & server.urlencode(request.form("password"))This grabs the form fields, URL-encodes them (to ensure that the browser doesn't choke on bad characters), and redirects to the next page with the URL-encoded variables in the querystring of the next page. Feel free to tinker with this.
  13. I use Simpload (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/). It's free, and has unlimited bandwidth. I use it for my sig pic and avatar, and I haven't had a problem since day 1. It also gives you the HTML and BBcode to quickly make use of it. One small bottleneck: You have to renew the hosting of a certain file after something like 100 days; just log in to the site, check the Extend time box for each shortly expiring picture, and click process.
  14. Yeah, blocking IP's has a problem, because you might end up blocking yourself if that person doesn't have a static IP address (if he uses the same ISP as you). Can you some how make a cookie that will be placed only on his system and reject him if the site finds the cookie or suspend him if you are using a forum?
  15. Yeah, I go through that garbage too. Being 14 and a computer nerd isn't easy, so I let a lot of these things go. Every once in a while, I really lose my patince and temper and start going on a wild rampage toward the one kid in my class (all of 7 kids) that I don't like.
  16. You are really vernerable only if you keep your modem on 24/7 AND your computer on 24/7. It also helps to use a more security concious operating system (Windows 2000 / XP, Mac OS, Linux). But on the topic, AOL's security tools are not worth having if you also need to have the clunky AOL software on your computer. My recomendation: ZoneAlarm firewall (free personal edition, still plenty of features) and eTrust Easy AntiVirus($30 a year; well worth it).
  17. I am happy with Windows Media Player 10, in which they finally got things right. I hope that Microsoft will follow in that version's path, and add even more useful and nice improvements (the tabs at the top were a welcome change, that's what I think). Who knows. All we can do is wait for the release (which may take months longer than expected).
  18. Yeah, I found out about the GPS support. I got a message saying that it's only for plus members. I think there's also a feature to find the distance between two bookmarks, plus some others (like those mentioned above).
  19. I tried running an ISO image on my hard drive and a burned Knoppix Live CD, and neither of them worked. I don't have the time or patience to download yet another .iso, so are there any other alternatives?
  20. I really don't remember when I made my Geocities site, but it was just a small personal site. I started it with a PageWizard, and then editied it with PageBuilder (worst Web design program ever). I was annoyed by Yahoo's ads, and felt limited by the tools provided. That was when I wasn't so smart in computers. Now I am running a Mambo site and a WordPress blog (on Xisto of course), and have experience in HTML, JavaScript, a little PHP, and ASP.Net.
  21. Installing SuSE Linux for me was relatively easy, between deciding what packages to install and selecting the timezone. I ran into a resonable bottleneck - the partitioner wouldn't let me shrink my windows partition more than it recommended I should, leaving me with about 220 MB of free space. Is there any Windows XP theme for KDE? I sort of like Thin Keramik, but an XP theme would rule (especially for a long time Windows user like me).
  22. I didn't exactly feel like making up a new description, so here you go. If anyone can help me with this, just PM me.
  23. I would suggest getting an ethernet card - in case you get DSL or cable and you need the port. Otherwise for 600 bucks that's a pretty hot machine. Where did you find that computer?
  24. I have seen RealVNC before, and I can say that it's quite slim. If you want decent web based remote control, try LogMeIn (https://secure.logmein.com/home). Getting Windows desktop sharing to work is a pain, so if you go with that or any VNC variation, sign up for DynDNS or No-IP so that you don't have to memorize your IP address, which changes frequently anyway (unless you have a dedicated static IP on like a T1 or something).
