  1. NYC is almost really bad. People say that the subway system is in decrepid condition, and there are recent hapennings pointing toward a strike. I do love the buses (or at least the ones run under the MTA; Green Lines, forget about it): They have really good hybrid buses (I'll upload some recordings and/or pictures eventually) that I love, and they are mostly on time. I still wonder whether the MTA has a deficit or a surplus (and why the heck they are giving us dicounts when they have lots of debt to pay off). One of these days they'll get their act together and consolidate the remainder of the PBLs (private bus lines, Green Lines, Triborough Coach, Command Bus and Jamaica Bus), which they have been talking about for years.
  2. My preference goes to vBulletin; it has the nicest interface, is very fast, and esay to use.2nd pick goes to phpBB, it's also fast and well organized, but it has quite limited features.IPB took last since (at least on Xisto's servers) it's quite slow, and it has loads of stuff to learn.Note: I have not ever really run a forum, so don't decide what forum you will use based on my opinions.
  3. If you care more about content than design, check out NetObjects Fusion. I used version 7, which had some pretty nifty stuff in it, and the new version 9 defenitely has more. Beware: if you have a tiny hard rive (like the 4 GB one in my old computer), consider upgrading, or get a new computer altogether while you're at it.
  4. Got it: It's the Ligin controls. In Visual Studio or Visual Web Developer, look in the Toolbox while editing an ASP.NET page, and you'll see a sction called Login. I don't know exactly how to use them, but they work in tandem to create a pretty nice login system for your site. Also, I saw Susan Wisowaty (at the MSDN event in NYC) or some other really smart developer (unlike me, possibly Bob Taylor from http://www.learnvisualstudio.net/) demonstrate how to use them (without code if it was Mrs. Wisowaty).
  5. I'm not an expert but here's what I know: VBScript and Jscript are used in ASP. You technicallly can access a database client-side, but the database file (if Access database) must be on the users computer. You can develop for ASP.Net with: Visual Studio, Visual Web Developer Express Edition, or other tools. I don't know how to use a .Net application with MySQL, but I'm sure you can get a data provider somewhere.
  6. Also on an unrelated note, the Move to Trash option is now simply Delete. This is more logical to me.
  7. Really weird: I just noticed another type of ad in Gmail. This is a little box under the Contacts link, and it's for Google Talk. Here's a screenshot Notice from BuffaloHELP: Merged.
  8. One day I was looking around the Google site, and noticed Google Talk, so I said what the heck and downloaded it hoping it would install without administrator privelages (which it did). I installed it, and invited one of my friends who has Gmail to use it; he downloaded it, and after about 5 minutes trying to get my headset working (turns out that the mic was muted) I was chatting in FM radio quality sound! All I can really say is it's wonderful. No doubt about it.
  9. Calm down guys. I just think that XHTML will help solve the browser wars (especially if the <object> tag will end up being deprecated). Who cares if it ain't that great? Those who want to spend the time can use, everyone else can whatever the heck they want their pages.
  10. I posted a reply in a topic I started, and I see a nice, big banner ad right over my post (along with a Xisto - Web Hosting ad). I understand that this is your revenue sorce, but why are they in posts? Can someone explain how the ad system here works?
  11. A) I spelled Microsoft wrong on purpose (the company is a huge money machine, 90% of anything they make ain't free), since I'm talking about open source which 97% of all Microsoft software isn't. I have found many Windows open source apps out there (take a trip over to Sourceforge.net and see for yourself). I've used Windows for years and also have gripes about it, but won't switch because my support department (actually Daddy) won't cover it (although I plan to install SuSE 9.1 Pro on an old machine of mine) C) What exactly do you mean? Most project creators do accept donations, and (I would expect) have a real job. That's why many people use *nix. See http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/#
  12. If you ever noticed that some scripts are released under the GPL or some similar license, that indicates that it is open source. Open source means that A) the program is free B ) you can modify it C) you can redistribute it (only under the same terms, without modifying any copyright statements), even if you modified it (as far as I remember). One of the reasons behind this is because people hate companies like Micro$oft that charge high prices and impose almost no freedom on your rights to their (money-making) software. I personally wish that many decent programs would be free, although I can't name any at the moment. I have a number of open source programs in use: Mambo, WordPress, Apache, XAMPP and 7-Zip. I didn't pay a cent, and in fact, they work better than their paid counterparts (at least they are faster and smaller). So if you decide to write a program, but don't want money from it, consider making it open source, and expect many smiles .
  13. ASP.Net and JSP are better for large scale, enterprise level applications. I went to the MSDN event in NYC, and in the demonstrations, they were using Visual Studio, a rather expensive product (depending on the edition), and more affordable for companies than individuals. PHP is free and can be developed for with pretty much any editor (not to mention many good free IDEs).
  14. I have never heard of the Database class (from my limited knowledge of VB6), only ADODB.Connection. Can you explain it and tell me where it originates from?
  15. I could have saved hours of work if I saw this earlier. I was uploading a backup Mambo directory tree from my old Web host, and it took hours. I ended up uploading directories (to the point where they contained no subdircectories) by hand.
  16. I hate smoking. It gives you bad breath and lung cancer (which can/will lead to death). While waiting online for the Q10 on some mornings, people are smoking and I am suffocating. I can't stand it. If everyone on Earth will stop smoking, we will have a better planet (I don't really know-just maybe).
  17. I have been using Mambo for a while now and I really like it. It is fast feature rich, and most importantly, FREE. It takes a little while to get used to it (the mambots, modules and components, templates and all the other stuff), but once you get used to it, you'll find it's really great. I just wish that it had better versioning control (and I knew how to use it). I love Mambo, I will use it as long as there is a community.
  18. This topic is not really going anywhere. Ihat people want to host their own Web sites, but it's not a beginner thing. Getting a static IP and good upsteam bandwidth is expensive, and the security risks for an out of the blue machine can be endless.Note: This is just my two cents on this. Don't take it personally. I don't mean to hurt anybody's feelings.
  19. No sorry. But you can buy a domain and point it somehow to your IP address. I don't know exactly how to do this though.
  20. 1&1 is a really good host. I got the 3 year trial when it was around in the fourth quarter of 2002, and thaey gave me a ton of features. I agree that the servers are expensive, but they do have good support.
  21. Not really a breakthrough in recent months. Yes, it's called the tablet PC, and it actually comes in another flavor. What you are referring to is the convertible tablet. These are, as you said, laptops with fold over and touch screens. The other kind is the slate, which (if you think about it) is a computer inside a monitor, and are more expensive (as far as I know).
  22. Wow, technology changes all the time. Version 9 must be like a few weeks old. I'll check it out.
  23. Althoug Xisto doesn't support it, ASP.Net 2.0 supports this security method, through some controls (I forgot what they are called) and ASP.Net 1.1 also has an authentication mechanism built in. See Teach Yourself ASP.Net in 21 Days (by Sams Publishing) for more on this.
  24. Do a power search on http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/, checking the option for ColdFusion under Scripting. You may find a number of hosts.
