  1. I am sort of with the open source movement - I have a site with the open source Mambo CMS, I use the open source Mozilla Firefox upon occasioon, and other programs that I mentioned earlier. One of the things I like about open source software - you usually (not 100% of the time) don't have to be an administrator on Win 2000/XP based machines to install these programs. They may have a couple of bug the first time, and a slightly different approach to doing things from the conventional commercial software, but I feel that these differences are worth it.
  2. I would love to tell you what I think about it, but I can't even access your site! From what Inspiron says, I would rather use either Simpleboard for Mambo, or SMF (Simple Machines Forum)
  3. If you use the Simpleboard Forum component for Mambo, there is a text box where you can enter the HTML for the Adsense banner. I think you can also find a whole bunch of modules that will display it on any page in your Mambo site.
  4. microscopic^earthling has a tutorial or two on Xisto's forum on how he made the [ note ] tag and a few others. If I ever overcome my laziness, I'll find you a link to it. From what I read, the code to do it is a little complex - and that's just for a 14 year old who doesn't really know any languages aside from HTML.
  5. I find some of the ads here amusing. I like that Say Something and Whaaaat ad. I also like the ones where you blast the phones and the other shooting ones. It's like an arcade that supports OpaQue. Yes some of the ads are innapropriate (you know which ones I'm talking about) or annoying, but a good majority of them are quite some fun.
  6. I also came for the hosting originally, but now I seem to like being part of a community (and earning respect on the Net). I learned many things since I came here, and I have my nice web site too.
  7. I clicked the link in the quoted email, and from what it seems, that site doesn't even exist. That further promotes the fact that it is a hoax.
  8. To me, HTML is Web 1.0, ASP, PHP, and other dyynamic languages are Web 1.5, and now AJAX is Web 2.0. We now have all of these fancy dynamic sites over our heads, with all sorts of ways to communicate with others and find information. After all, we are in the Information Age, aren't we? And we need new and faster ways to get to our informaion. So there you have it. As people wanted new ways to do things, they came out. And now even old things seem new.
  9. It's unfortunate but I almost never backed up. I really should because I have music, school work and other things that I would care if I lost. I haven't found any good solutions for backing up, so that's a major reason why I don't.
  10. We currently have 4 HP computers in the house. One of them is almost 8 years old and still chugging alond with both Windows and Linux on it's paltry 4 GB disk. Our newer computers are state of the art, with Intel P4 processors, 512 MB - 1 GB RAM, 80 - 160 GB hard drives, and one (mine haha ) has a LightScribe DVD burner, which I have to say, is state of the art. I haven't really had any problems with our HP computers that weren't my fault (I make almost any computer I come in contact with like mine). Only HP computers come with LightScribe drives preinstalled. I also like HP's systems better. Dell's Media Center PCs are the regular models with XP MCE instead of the regular versions, while HP has it's Photosmart PCs, and their Digital Entertainment Center living room style PCs.
  11. I love Gmail compared to Yahoo and Hotmail. The interface is fast and really trimmed down, things always display properly (unlike Hotmail, which sometimes doesn't render properly in IE for heaven's sake), it's really fast, doesn't have annoying banner ads, and isn't from Microsoft (although I have to admit, Windows Live Mail plays catchup to Gmail). If you want Gmail, PM me your current address.
  12. I belive what you say about papers being torn (I speak from experience, papers in my binders generally don't live too long in there before being ripped out). But not every school can afford laptops, or the specialized software they would need to put on them. And I don't think Bush is about ready to give a couple of billion dollars toward adding computers to the classrooms of America.
  13. A lot of the stuff on that site is wrong. The example of bad ad-matching is weird, and I can't even understand what they are talking about. For most normail users of Gmail who don't spam or talk about anything illegal, they should be fine.
  14. Sounds pretty good. I like what Google does with AJAX on their services (especially Gmail), so surely it would make a decent site management tool. Where can we find this tool? Need a link.
  15. HOAX. Do you really think that Gmail would do such a thing? I mean, do you think that Google of all people would ask you to click 1000 links? Not considering the fact that the link doesn't work.
  16. Are you kidding me? Gmail is like 20 times faster than Hotmail (I mean the MSN hotmail, NOT Windows Live Mail Beta), and is much less cumbersome to use. Not to mention, Gmail only has text ads, and Hotmail has banners and squares and links all over. I couldn't even see any pages on the site. When I went to the address of [whatever it's called, I forget because it's so bad], all I saw was a directory listing, with like no folders (except a skeleton). I would much rather use Gmail, which I do, and love using. BTW, Gmail has around 2700 MB right now, not 1 GB - that was like last year.
  17. Thanks to everyone for their praises and compliments. I'm glad that I'm able to contribute to the Xisto community. By the way, Plenoptic, weren't you a mod or admin once upon a time?
  18. Yeah, if only I could see any of the images on the site. All of them are unloaded (and yes, both IE and Netscape allow images through), so I can't make any sense out of the site. Oh well, that lasted a long time............
  19. Good work m^e. I know that these things were around before I joined, but it's still worth congratulating you for. You mentioned SMF uses a BBCode parser. How could I add my own BBCodes to SMF? (Or even Simpleboard for Mambo?)
  20. Well, you become a moderator if OpaQue (or another admin probably) feels you A) deserve the priveleges are trustworthy of having those priveleges C) don't ask. There was already a discussion somewhere on the forum about becoming an admin or mod or whatever (see http://forums.xisto.com/topic/28819-buffalohelp-wassie-new-administrators/). Anyway, hi KuBi, and I hope you enjoyed your time at Xisto so far. I'm sure that OpaQue and the crew are treating you well here.
  21. I like Avalon's idea too. The next thing we need is a spellcheck, which I'm sure isn't too hard to find. That should save even more need for editing because members will be able to correct a good majority of errors before even submittng their post. It's a shame to see that a commercial forum system (namely IPB) doesn't have a built in spellchecker when free ones (SMF, phpBB - well, actually, the spellchecker is powered by SpellingCow, but the button is inclluded in the default package) do.
  22. Sure. But what I could do is change it if/when an upgrade takes place. Believe me, If I find out that we have a new version of cPanel, I'll be all over it and then some. I even added the FrontPage feature. Here it is: And a link to the .bmp: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  23. OK, I kinda redesigned my banner. I changed the feature list a little, and I have the uncompressed .bmp and a .jpg on my disk. Enjoy all. I will put this banner on my site. Here's the .bmp: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  24. Trap17 supports Perl, PHP, and probably some other languages. Really, a script like the one I mentioned is really easy to make. Maybe I'll sit down with my Perl book tonight and make a script.
  25. I made this using M$ Paint, and made the background with the header of the forum theme. It looks bad because when I saved it in Paint, it did some annoying conversion that screwed it up. I'll make another one as a JPEG sometime.
