  1. I didn't pay, for it-I got it as part of a free three year trial from 1&1 (https://www.1and1.com/). They give you version 8 with their current hosting plans. I find it excellent if you like to do editing on your machine, but any server-side content will bring it down fast. So don't plan on using PHP or ASP.Net with it (get Visual Studio or Dreamweaver for those).
  2. Two points:A) the command is ipconfig (I probably was typing too fast) Call me Michael. I got the avatar from BUsTalk.Net (I have the same user name and avatar there), but don't want to make it into a title. I will change my avatar tonight.
  3. No, but the basic package (10 credits) gives you that. You can also do a quick search on free-webhosts.com for a host with no Forced Ads, MySQL and FTP (the FTP is almost necessary to upload phpBB). If you can live with ads, check out 100Webspace.com (beware - you must have a domain to use any included email accounts, and the MySQL database has been down several times). But really, try Xisto. I have package 2, and I am very happy.
  4. I'm 14 and made a few small things. I even consider getting A+ certification and getting a summer job when I'm 16 (camp is not my cup of tea, ). But MS Certified at age 10? Unbelievable. No comment. I can't possibly imagine that actually happening. Not even in America.
  5. I assume taht you use Windows 2000 or XP. To see if your network connectio is bad, go to Start -> Run, type cmd, and hit enter. ?In the command window, type ipcongig /all. You will see someting like the following: CONSOLE Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : A1010Y-M Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : NoEthernet adapter Wireless Network Connection 2: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter #3 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-12-17-7D-AD-0C Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.101 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 68.237.161.12 71.242.0.12 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Tuesday, November 15, 2005 7:36:36 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Wednesday, November 16, 2005 7:36:36 PM You should see 192.168.1.1 for the default gateway. If you see that, that means you either have lots of interference around you (try changing to channel 1 or 11 if you are on 6) or or your internet connection is bad.Note: these are only suggestions. I am not an expert on this stuff, I just know from experience (by the way, I also have Linksys router, and they are really good).
  6. The theme that I am reffering to is the one shown on the page https://xisto.com/, when you are not logged in.
  7. Does anyone know of a free web site control panel (kind of like cPanel and DirectAdmin)? I'd like to try it, see what's out there as far as this goes.
  8. I'm hidden behind my wireless router, so as I expected, everything is secure. The tests ran pretty fast, and gave cleanly formatted results.
  9. Nice tutorial. I have seen WAMP (Windows, Apache, MySQL and PHP) befoer, but XAMPP has many more features built in and has the benefits of A) being open source having a non-installer setup for those of us with limited privelages under Windows NT/2000/XP and C) having an FTP server.
  10. Sorry, not my question. What is the address of the POP3 and SMTP servers (ex. that you would enter into an email client like Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird)?
  11. This can end up being an expensive prposition. If you want to run your own Web server, you need (as mentioned above): A) Fast upload speeds decent hardware C) somewhat advance knowledge of administrating servers. Also, if you want to be a host you must have a mechanism set up to allow users to register and for the server to set up their space (cPanel works for this) and you need a pretty big hard drive for all of your users sites.
  12. I looked in cPanel and noticed that I have a total of 99 email accounts. However, I can not find any sever connection information. Can any one proide me with these settings?
  13. Yes I would, simply because when it comes to many computer-related issues, I like to have things the "old" way. Aesthetics do matter to me a lot.
  14. I have tried uploading the uncompressed files and even over DSL it took forever (mostly because the connection would hang in the middle of a folder and I would have to do each folder individually). Does anyone have a script that runs gzip and tar (or can write one)? By the way, I have installed Mambo before, and I agree that the wizard is intuitive.
  15. I ask for this because the theme that I mentioned a) looks nicer and makes access to functions a little easierAlso, is there a way to check the cPanel version?
  16. How would you extract it on the server? We don't hhave SSH or telnet access. The best I can think of to do that is a Perl or PHP script that runs tar and gzip on the server.
  17. I used another host at one point (000k3.com-doesn't exist anymore) and they had a theme similar to the one at cpanel.net (silver and blue). I really like that theme. Can you please install it?
  18. I turn on my trusty new HP once a day and shut it off before I go to sleep. If I walk away for more than 20 minutes, it goes into standby; occasionally (when I am in the middle of something and don't want to have to spend the time restarting it and reopening everything) I hibernate the thing. I don't run a lot of stuff at once (I even close tabs in Netscape if I see a ton of them), and even then, the CPU fan runs faster to compensate for the extra processing power (and thus heat). I don't view leaving a machine on 24/7 as a global standard, rather as a custom for those who wish to. Windows XP Professional does get cranky sometimes, so rebboting is a good thing to do.
  19. A) If I don't do homework I get detention, and if that happens, I have to pay for the gas to get home (my parents must pick me up) I have to read a story in the textbook and answer questions (half short, half pretty long and hard) and read a chapter of Social Stidies and answer questions on each section (most easy) plus math and biology stuff (those aren't too bad). And this is in a Yeshiva high school. I wonder what other schools give (actually, I'd perfer not knowing).
  20. Sorry, I meant vBulletin. I've found many forums that use it, and it provides many features. Mamboserver.com uses the vBridge component, and it makes it go in nicely with the rest of the site. vBulletin in not free ($160 USD), but is very advanced. phpBB is also very popular, and is open source (and therefore free).
  21. You can use phpMyAdmin, an open source tool that you can acces from cPanel. I use it occasionally, and find it easy to use.
  22. That forum is powered by vBoard, of who's cost I don't know. I do know that there is a Mambo component/module that intergrates it with your Mambo site. I used Simpleboard under Mambo, but didn't totally like it, especially having to administrate a whole huge forum.
  23. I originally started working with Visual Basic 6, but then moved on to working with Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition (a .Net version, part of the Visual Studio 2005 family). This tool, according to Microsoft, makes it easy for hobbyists and entusiasts to join the programming bandwagon. With Windows Forms, making a browser is incrediblaly easy; and a calculator is easy in VB6 too.
  24. By the way, when I said slow I meant like <150 KBps. This is really slow compared to Optimum Online, which is around 6 MBps. I know someone who got Verizon DSL recently, and it is much faster (my problem is probably the hard ware-the modem, which is a pretty old model I figure).
  25. XHTML is a combination of HTML tags and XML strictness. If you forget to close a tag, the page isn't valid. Empty tags must have a "/" bafore the ">". Atrributes must have a value; <p nowrap /> won't work, instead use <p nowrap="nowrap" />.
