  1. Very simply put, this script connects to the Google API Web service using your Google API key, and queries Google from thre. The guy that made it mimiced the real Google interface, so that's why it looks so good. It's not as good as Google; basically, it is Google.
  2. I agree with anyone who thinks that AOL is garbage. Despite all of their security "efforts", it still has one major problem: it uses Internet Explorer, the most insecure browser on the planet. And yes it installs all sorts of junk on your computer, and it sort of takes over by making itself the default dial up connection, and running its "Spyware protection" software in the background. AOL, listen to this and have happier users: 1) Use the Mozilla engine 2) Make it slim, and smaller (we don't have huge hard drives you know) 3) Change your advertising strategy. Don't confuse uneducated users (and make them spend more money) 4) Fix your billing procedures, and make it easier to cancel. 5) Don't follow Microsoft's path and try to take over the computing industry.
  3. 1) I agree.2) If you like Windows 98/ME/2000 look, then KDE has a theme for that. 3) With SuSE Linux, just click on an RPM in Konqueror, and click the Install with YaST button (or something similar) 4) I use Linux and I can barely pass as a Windows nerd. 5) SuSE Linux was installing tons of packages (aka free software that you would pay tons for in Windows versions, half of which you can either unselect in the first place, or uninstall later) 6) That's a matter of opinion. Don't go telling the world why you can't do things, when they have been done.
  4. I probably should make a tutorial on making a Web site. Ok, first things first, you need to know what your Web site will be about. Computers, music, family, or a blog? This involves some deep thinking; so come back when you're done brainstorming. I made a terible mistake of skipping this step, and wound up with a site with no content.Next, figure out what platform you will use to publish your site, and where you will host it (please choose Xisto). For a content rich site, try Mambo/Joomla and a nice template (which can be found online and for free in many cases). Or if a blog is your decision, I suggest WordPress, a nice and clean (literally; it's XHTML-compliant) bloging tool. If you just want a simple site, sit down with a good HTML book and code it yourself, or get a decent site editor (Dreamveaver, Frontpage, or even the one in the cPanel file manager). After that, say something! Write at least a few pages of decent content, like an About Me page, an interests page, and a few articles related to the subject of your site. Here's the part that's a little hard: announce your work of art to the world. This can be accomplished through one of those traffic exchange programs, or just make a link tou the site in your signiture on a forum. As time goes on, your content will grow stale, and your visitors will get bored. Write an article a week, let's say. And if you want your visitors to be updated on the content, put up an RSS feed or make a newsletter or something like that. I can't really help with that however. So after youv'e read this long and boring post, I hope that you now have the knowledge on how to open up your own little corner of the internet.
  5. Now I don't know if you are using VB 6 or VB.NET. If it's VB 6, then I can't help you at all. If you are using VB.Net, grab yourself a copy of Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition, and dive into that tutorial. Howver, I recomend watching the whole series of videos on that page if you are a beginner. Be prepared to download Visual Basic Express Edition (about 500 MB if you get the MSDN Library, a comprehensive guide to the Express editions; without the library it will be significantly less), or have your copy of Visual Studio 2005 installed.
  6. As of today, Circuit City is off of my electronics store list. We (my parents and brothers) went there today, and I went looking around for a USB flash drive, but couldn't find one anywhere on any floor. Also, I couldn't find anything for less than $25 that would be somewhat useful. Their web site is OK, but once again there is nothing really cheap to buy.
  7. There is a script called FastFreeHost that can be found on HotScripts (http://www.hotscripts.com/category/scripts/php/scripts-programs/web-hosting-tools/ or their site http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/). That is a script for cPanel. It looks pretty good, but no garantee that it will meet your needs.
  8. 1. Uh it'll take some work but yes indeed. If OpaQue did it, so can you.2. Put an include statement at the top of the pages, and in the included file, read the user's id from a cookie and select his name from a users row in a database. 3a. If there's awill, there's a way. 3b. I've heard in various places around the forum about how the legnth and quality algorithm is so secret, so don't ask us. 4. Uh, if random means scheduled, then yes. a. A cron job can be setup in cPanel to run a script that deducts a certain value in the points field of a users table b. You could have a last update field I suppose. I have an idea for a script for this for SMFShop. See http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ for more info.
  9. I recently put a link at the bottom of my blog's theme (or template or whatever you want to call it) to show my gratitude toward Trap 17 and its excellent communuity and hosting. Keep up the good work OpaQue and everybody should continue to spread the word about this work of nature.
  10. When I first setup my site with Xisto, I found that at least 10 MB of my space were already being used for some purpose or another. Not that I really need those few megs, but it would be nice to know why things are being put in my account before I even used it.
  11. For some strange reason, I can not make a new topic in this subforum. I am willing to give away invites, but I can't really do so easily if I can't make a topic about it. Why is this occuring?
  12. Nice idea, but two things:A) What is your site's address? You make absolutely no mention of it in any post in this topic. You will really send a few bucks cash in the mail if I write a good tutorial?Sounds like a real good way to make money - not kidding
  13. I installed SuSE Linux 9.1 Professional on an old computer recently. I installed MySQL server (version 4.0.18), Webmin (version 1.250) and Usermin (version 1.180). If I try to connect to the MySQL server with the username root and no password, I get an invalid login error from Webmin, Usermin and mysql-cc. What is the default password, and how can I change it? I am very excited to be learning Linux (after a long journey through Windows-land), but get frustrated on loopholes like these. Also, an a different note, why would the system stop loading after a certain point (towards the end, don't remeber where) if I have my USB drive plugged in before booting?
  14. It certainly is legal, but as mentioned repetedly above, you may have to pay for it. I've done a reinstallation on my grandmother's computer, but in that case, there were no hardware modifications; but anyway, everything worked out well.
  15. I tried connecting to your hosting with a made up username and password, and it was able to connect to the server (obviously, I could not log on to your server). I connected through 2dfy.trap17.com (no prefixes or anything) using SmartFTP. Everything worked as normally as an incorrect login would work.
  16. As far as I know (and tested), SMF is XHTML-compliant. It even has little buttons that you can use to do a validation on W3C's website at the bottom of the default theme.
  17. Thanks so much for that link. I always thought that it would take so much to connect to a MySQL server in .Net programs. How on earth you you use ODBC databases in .Net? I heard of the MySQL OCBC component before, used it once or twice....
  18. ZPanel is free, however, as I stated in an earlier post, it's NOT open source. I haven't found a registration script for the program, but I'm sure a google can find one. I tried ZPanel, and it's decent, but nowhere near cPanel. Also, I found a bunch of control panels and the like on SourceForge.net, and there is one called Usermin (related to Webmin).
  19. Tip: If you use a firewall, it should ask you if you want to allow the program to open the required ports (ex. ZoneAlarm will pop up a balloon asking if Apache can act as a server).
  20. Pc World did a review on how tough gadgets are, and as part of the "testing" (which included real life scenarios), they put an SD card and a Lexar Media Jumpdrive Sport in the wash, and they work like a charm after being washed and dried. Off topic, the Canon camera they dropped repeatedly (with the aforementioned SD card in it) didn't fare too well.
  21. Are you using cPanel on your sever? If so, then there are plenty of those scripts in the Hotscripts link above. I am also not very knowledgeable in this area, and I plan to run aserver across a network in my house (an intranet, not for public access).
  22. I was saying that as a reminder to beginnners who may not have the experience necessary to run and secure a PC for server use. Can't you read?
  23. I bought SuSE linux after reading those PC World articles mentioned above. I was not very educated at the time. But now I am happy with my decision. Sometimes you take what comes. And, yes, the console is very important.
  24. I have a machine setup with SuSE Linux 9.1 Professional. For the $89 it costs me, I got 2 manuals, 5 CDs, and 2 double-sided DVDs (for 64-bit machines). It took about 2 hours to install it (that's because the computer is old, and therefore, very slow) and I only have about 200 MB left on my hard drive (I plan to resize my Windows partition even more than YaST did during setup). I like the KDE enviroment; it has nice 3D icons, very configurable. SuSE's nice installation and administration tool, YaST, is a wonder compared to Control Panel. Here are some old but useful articles on beginnig with Linux: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/# http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  25. Really strange. What are all the poor people who don't have atomic clocks going to do to make up for the extra second?
