How To Disable Password Expiration (xp) Windows XP
abhiram replied to soleimanian's topic in Software
Ok... I guess you mean to say it's for people who use the administrator account for regular use instead of creating another user account. That's why I never saw it before . -
How To Disable Password Expiration (xp) Windows XP
abhiram replied to soleimanian's topic in Software
What? Does this apply to all the user accounts? I've been using XP for 2 years and haven't had a single prompt to change the password neither for the regular user nor the administrator. Notice from SpaceWaste: Please use the quote function properly...It is crucial you close all the tags, or you may get alot of credits you don't deserve. This has been a warning . -
uh... isn't this the same as making a part of the pic colored and the rest of it black and white? You are using a colored picture to begin with. I think this is the same as this post: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/86311-topic/?findpost=1064320484 except that you are changing the color of the original pic and then erasing the overlapping black and white image.

Well... that's too bad... I guess I'll have to continue using a FAT32 partition for swapping between windows and linux. Yea right... .... It'll take me a million years to read up on all that stuff and develop something, coz i'll have to do it from ground up. How many file systems are available for GNU/Linux? I was under the impression that there were only ext and reiser filesystems.

Sounds pretty good, but question: Is there any good program to read reiserFS partitions from Windows? That's the only reason I use ext3 ... because explore2fs supports only upto. I tried another program which was linked to on the explore2fs webpage, but it didn't work and I had to reformat the whole thing to ext3. That was around 8 months ago ... is there improved support now?

Hey, thanks for the link. This program is great and it's very easy to use. It also is quite lightweight and hasn't given me any stability issues like 3DSMAX (which kept hanging in between). Well, in this one, you don't have quite as many features ... and also because it's a learner's edition, you can save movies in only one format. But it's pretty good for basic rag doll animations. You've got many premade poses (standing, crouching), behaviours (staggering, arms raised), animations (running, walking stealthily with a gun). Since it's only 60MB I would say it's worth a try.

Well, just to make things a bit more clear about this issue... I'm from India and more of the 'now' generation as I would like to think of myself . There are many remedies and cures for various diseases and health problems from scabies to sterility in the ancient Indian texts. Most of them are not used at all, but some of them such as the use of neem for skin ailments is not uncommon even in the present day. I remember when I was a kid, I got some kind of wierd rash all over my body because of playing in some bushes in the playground. My grandma who was staying with us then made my mom get some neem leaves and ground them into a paste and applied it all over my body. Frankly, I don't know whether it was because of that or because of the other ointment that my doctor asked me to use that did the trick, but I was fine in a couple of days. I applied some neem paste even when I had the chicken pox.... it feels cool and kind of reduces the itchy feeling. It's not just neem, there are many other plants which are also used for treating some diseases. My mom also showed me a particular weed that grew in our backyard and said the leaves can be squeezed and the juice used as an antiseptic. Of course, we do prefer an antiseptic ointment like dettol, but it's always something that might come in handy in an extreme case. You've probably heard of Ayurveda... it's a complete science of medicine in itself preferred by some to allopathy and homoeopathy. All the drugs and medicines are made from plants and natural occuring materials... no chemicals or anything. That's for sure... "Whatever the mind thinks, the mind can achieve". But it won't help if you have a serious problem such as a disease or something. When you know you have a serious problem, it's better to try to cure it rather than trying to ignore it. There are probably many more natural treatments available... no compulsion on anyone to use them... but if generations on generations have passed down the message that the neem leaves can cure some disease or the other... I think it possesses some credibility. Cheers .

My New Siggy here it is let me know
abhiram replied to Jorsart's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
Hi Jorsart, I've tried to duplicate your sig, but couldn't quite make it . This is what I ended up with: Could you tell me how you got 2 ripples in the sig? I can't seem to find out how to change the position of the ripple also. It only forms in the center of the image. Also, the transition from the last frame to the first one is very smooth in yours and terribly abrupt in mine. How did you overcome that? Hope you can shed some light on this... I've spent quite some time to make it. I've used the zigzag filter to make the ripple and then used 12 layers for the animation. Thanks. -
Your problem is with the way you sliced up the table. How did you do it? I don't think you used photoshop or fireworks for it. I would suggest you use one of them and slice them up correctly. I've downloaded the html file and it's in a mess with all the cells of the table arranged haphazardly. If you don't have photoshop, PM me and I'll slice them up for you in photoshop. But, from what I see, after the page loads up completely, the lines disappear and the page looks fine in firefox. Hope this helps you out.

Nice... really good tips, especially the defrag context menu one. I think that one can be extended to many other functions also by replacing defrag.exe with file.exe and placing the file in system32 folder.

From what I've heard, Partition Magic (Tragic? ) works fine with FAT32 but beware of it when using with NTFS. It can screw up things pretty bad sometimes. I always use NTFS only because FAT32 doesn't work very well with partitions greater than 32GB. I tried Partition Magic 9.0 once and it screwed up my drive so badly that I had to delete all the partitions and re-partition, re-format and re-install. The problem I had was, when I ran Partition magic for the first time, it gave me a pop-up message saying "there is some error in your sector blahblahblah... would you like partition magic to fix it?". Naturally, I selected 'Yes' and that's when the problem started. I didn't resize any partition or anything, planning to do it later and then after a restart, BOOM! It's gone! Windows wouldn't boot up. I tried to reinstall windows, but when I came to the screen showing the partitions, there was an 8MB partition right above my C drive. I tried to ignore it and install into C, but it kept saying "windows XP could not be installed on this drive". Same result with all the other partitions. Finally, I had to delete all the partitions (including the 8MB one) and make new partitions again, and it worked. To cut a long story short, I wouldn't advise you to use Partition magic at all if you've got important files on your computer. For basic drive management, if you are using Windows XP, you can just right click on 'My computer', select 'Manage', and then in the window that opens, in the right part, select -> 'Storage' -> 'Disk Management'. That should help you change drive letters, format your partitions or make new partitions out of unpartitioned space. But if you have a Linux partition, you should have Service Pack 2 installed if you want to see those partitions. They are displayed as 'Unknown Partitions'. Otherwise, it shows it as 'Unpartitioned Space'... so be careful . Cheers .

IMO, that's exactly what they want you to do... go back to the store and demand an original CD because that's what you paid for. That also helps them trace the sources of pirated software. It's not just Microsoft... many of the software companies and even Playstation, XBox, Music CD companies are planning on enforcing online validation of the stuff you use in their hardware. Like, I read recently (on slashdot I think) that a music player is coming out which will shut itself up if you play pirated music in it . These companies lose Billions of dollars for piracy, which is quite a bit. This could cause problems to many people... if someone else plays does something illegitimate with your box, you could suffer. I just hope it doesn't get really out of hand.

OpenOffice Or Microsoft ? openoffice.org or Microsoft Office
abhiram replied to JMC1405241503's topic in Software
Right on! Half of the lecturers in my College use Powerpoint and it's so hard to stay awake in such classes. I wish they would do it the old fashioned way ... writing on the board with chalk . We even have to study for our exams from the same slides . -
Well... I'm not one to usually complain about Windows XP because, I would say it is the best Windows version so far, better than Windows 2000 (anyway... that's a matter of opinion ). My Windows XP partition which I've used since February on two systems (one in campus and one at home during the holidays) has finally crashed... I don't know what the reason for is, but I would say it's because of me letting down the firewall for a couple of hours at night because a friend wanted to copy something and thanks to all the viruses that are floating around in the campus LAN right now. It was working fine in the night and I shut it down and went to sleep. Morning I woke up and switched it on and I got a message saying 'Registry corrupted, windows has restored an older registry and has been succesful' and then logged me in. The start menu got corrupted ('All Programs' wouldn't even pop out!!), I couldn't install or uninstall anything, firewall was down, NAV 2005 was down and there was a new icon called 'web folders' in 'My Computer' and no CD Drive!!! Fine, I did a complete chkdsk of all the drives after booting with the XP CD and then did a system repair (took me the best part of 6 hours to do that), but finally, the 'All Programs' was back to normal and 'My computer' was back again. The problem now lies with the firewall and NAV... both of them don't work and I can't uninstall them either. Keeps giving me an error message even if I try. I tried installing Zone Alarm and it went fine but when I restarted the system, it went into a perpetual restarting process ... kept on restarting after the bootscreen. Had to boot in safe mode and uninstall Zone Alarm to get it to start again. So, for the past few days, I've been using Slackware (which I installed along with Windows XP ), which is pretty good in fact and I don't have any problem with it. But I've got a lot of important files in Windows in C drive which I've got to back up before I format and re-install windows. With my exams from next week, that could take upto another month. Anyway, I'm not complaining, as long as I can do what I want to in Linux .

You can disable that message by going to Security Center -> 'Change the way Security Center alerts me'. You can enable or disable the annoying pop-up balloon that pretends it knows everything about your computer. Well, if it's any consolation to you, even firefox asks you the same thing in Windows. I don't know how to disable that but, I'm sure someone on this forum probably knows how to. I really didn't find that too much of a trouble. The most annoying ones are the security center, automatic updates and low hard disk space popup balloons.

I did use abiword a long time ago, perhaps a year ago and got really pissed off with it because it kept messing up the bullets or something... and also it's compatibility with Office was terrible... I don't remember exactly. I got rid of it and installed OpenOffice which also has compatibility problems with Office, but for some reason, I found better to use.

Thanks a lot... I didn't know you had so many preset brushes in Photoshop. -
Now, that's very weird. I have firefox 1.0.6 and it plays .swf files on my hard disk in both linux and windows.

Michael Moore's Letter To President Bush
abhiram replied to LikMeBalleFM's topic in General Discussion
Now, that's a satirical letter if I ever saw one . I'm really doubtful about the letter's authenticity... I mean, Michael Moore might be very Anti-Bush given to his recent 'Fahrenheit 9/11' but still, you dont' write such a letter to the President of the United States. But the letter is very clear and his stance on Bush's policy is very clearly if not sarcastically stated. Is there any official news regarding this letter? I doubt such a letter would be released to the public by Bush . -
I haven't seen the Tonight show but my guess is the guy who was on the tonight show must have been Dave Gorman since he's the only person I know who's become a celebrity because of Googlewhacking. He's actually been on an adventure all across the globe for finding Googlewhacks (or to be more precise, finding people who find Googlewhacks) for a year. I have seen a video of his stand up comedy show (Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure) which he did in Australia and I must say, it's absolutely hilarious. The guy is amazing. If you want to get started on Googlewhacking, you must watch this video.
