  1. 'Asta'host huh? :DI can only think of 'Asta-la-vista' :DMaybe we should wait until Opaque comes along and answers it for us. After all, he set this whole gig up.
  2. London, san fransisco? I don't think so ... I haven't come across anything of the sort. I've heard that they're gonna start a new GTA from the ground up ... GTA4.... which will be even more realisitc than San andreas which will tap into the complete power of the PS3. If that's so, I'm gonna buy a PS3 .
  3. Hi xboxrulz, Now that's a matter of opinion . I've seen a lot of people saying 2000 is much better than XP and stuff like that... I've actually seen some computers with dual boot which ran 2000 much faster and efficiently than XP. It ultimately boils down to your hardware and the way you use your computer. Since I bought my first computer 2 years ago, I reinstalled XP only twice. I actually find SP2 much better than XP... there are some subtle issues that have been fixed... makes it better to use. On the same computer I tried to have 2000 as well, but it would hang in between for upto 5 min and sometimes it would just restart. So, I got rid of it and haven't used it again. No offense at all, but I feel that if your computer is relatively new and has atleast 256MB RAM, you should try WinXP with SP2 as a clean and fresh install. I don't mean you should get rid of Win2000, but if you ever do think of a reformat and reinstall, just try winXP with complete updates... you might like it. And if you don't, you can always go back to win2000 .
  4. Looks like someone is a fan of Richard Stallman . hehe. Well, as far as this topic goes, I was first introduced to computers in an institute which was running Windows95. I remember thinking it was the greatest thing in the world after working in DOS and GW-BASIC in school. It was really fascinating... I recall sitting in front of a computer as the instructor hadn't arrived and was looking at the flying windows screensaver. I just moved the mouse and it showed me the login screen asking for a user name and a password. After trying various passwords for 5 minutes, and none of them working, I clicked on the 'Cancel' button and lo and behold.... it logged me in . Hehe, this sort of thing doesn't happen with XP anymore. I've been using WinXP ever since I bought my first computer 2 years ago, and I must say it's much better than win95, 98 or even 2000. Win 2000 is very much similar to winXP because winXP was developed by building upon the technology of win2000. The reason I like WinXP is because it's much more pleasing aesthetically. You don't have to see sharp edges for the windows and the start button... you can put designs on them for christ's sake! People who still use Win98 do so because they don't have a choice. Probably they have an outdated system which doesn't even have 128MB of RAM which is required for WinXP to run at all. I've seen Win98 in use in internet browsing centers and boy, are they terrible. I would say, things have improved by leaps and bounds from Win95 to WinXP. WinXP isn't all the crap that people claim it to be. Microsoft has been unfortunate enough to release WinXP when people have started going OpenSource for the Home Desktops. Security issues and stability issues have hit M$ like a brick in the face. IMO, winXP has all the capabilities to secure a system just as well as GNU/Linux, but it doesn't make it compulsory like Linux. But a year ago, when I got my second computer, I started delving into linux. I must say it fascinated me even more and at one point of time I was almost about to format my Windows partition when better sense prevailed.
  5. What? I never knew that. You mean to say that it makes us take so much of sugar even though we don't need anymore? That doesn't sound too good. As you say, this might even lead to obesity. Or maybe that's the whole point of it. Maybe the food manufacturers want us to eat more so that their sales will increase. Is this thing perfectly legal? I don't see how it could be seeing that it makes people eat more. <digress> This sort of reminds me of what happened to Coca-cola back in the 80s (if i'm not mistaken) in India. The Indian government had to completely ban the sale of Coke in India because they were using some sort of ingredient making people addicted to it. Don't know how true that it... that's wht I heard about it, I was just a toddler back then </digress>
  6. Oh... so that's what a pen and paper RPG is . Thanks YB. I never did play paper and pen RPGs. I do believe I've seen it being played in cartoons, but I never knew that it was called a paper and pen RPG.
  7. hehe... been 2 years since I watched TV properly, other than while passing through. That's when I got my first computer .
  8. I was just browsing through the forums and I came across this post. The next stage of human evolution.... hmmm.... you know, when I was in school, reading biology, history and all the stuff you remember for life but never actually get to put to practical use, there were many instances where Darwin would come to play. I mean, evolution is something that is supposed to have happened. How can we ever tell? Humans evolving from monkeys? Ok, taken into consideration that the monkeys are quite intelligent, but it seems ironic that the monkeys have continued to evolve in their own way. If the humans had really evolved from the monkeys, shouldn't the monkeys have ceased to exist? Seems strange that when there was a sort of mutation in the genes leading to the development of a much superior intellect, it didn't happen to all of them. I'm not trying to say that Darwin is completely wrong or mistaken... I just feel that there is something not right about the way things have 'evolved' (if you wish). IMO, there should have been something else also which must have played a role in this. Coming to the X-Men, I really don't believe that super powers which can control nature and enable humans to change their shape and abilities is a stage in human evolution. Smarter? Yes, definitely, I agree one hundred percent... but stronger? I don't think so. If we look at the way man has evolved so far, he has always been trying to make things more easier and less strenuous.... trying to get things done on their own, getting someone else to do it. It started with the wheel where he reduced his workload, then he started using animals, and nowadays, we use vehicles instead of walking. For sure, he has become smarter. But the body is becoming weaker. I would say that a million years down the line, we will come up with such amazing technological advances that it will become unnecessary for us to move or do any physical exertion at all. Maybe we'll become all brain and nothing else .... just like the alien invaders in the book 'The war of the worlds' (not the movie, I haven't seen it!!!) by H G Wells. On a lighter note, we won't see such things happening for a very long time, and if you believe in rebirth, it'll take another thousand lifetimes before we reach that stage. Trying to guess the next step in human evolution is quite easy, but it's impossible to predict the actual course of human life.
  9. I guess you get custom titles only after a certain number of posts... not really sure, but that's how it is done in other forums.
  10. hehe...-1500 PCs running windows and/or linux,-2Mbps connection for all of them -about 2-3TB of files being shared between each other :DIt's in my univ where we've got internet connections in our dorms. The only problem is the internet connection which is terrible if all the residents start surfing simultaneously.
  11. Hi nybb, I agree that it's right on his part to demand an explanation, but he should have atleast given some time for the mods to explain themselves. The minute he saw that his credits have been reduced, he didn't even try to see if there was something wrong with his own posts.... he thought they were perfectly legit. That's when he started shouting that this place is trying to 'cheat' him. This is the 3rd topic that he started in one day because none of the admins were answering him. He should have atleast known that the mods aren't here all the time at our beck and call. As Opaque has said, the mods have their regular work to do in addition to what they do at Xisto... and IMO they are doing an excellent job. And also, when Opaque took the time to explain (in extreme detail) what was actually wrong with his posts, he had the nerve to just snub him without trying to justify himself. To sum everything up in a nutshell, I would say that he was right in demanding an explanation... but the way he went about it was not proper at all.
  12. I've had some trouble with FC4. I've been trying to install it on some computers which use SATA drives. For some reason, it just comes up to the install options window (where you have to choose GUI or text install) and then, no matter what parameters I pass, I get a kernel panic and the installation hangs in seconds. I've tried giving all the options but it didn't work. I thought there was a problem with the CDs. But then I got a DVD from a friend of mine and still it didn't work. Finally I got pissed off and installed Mepis which fortunately is working quite well. Has anyone installed FC4 on systems with SATA drives?
  13. Wow!!! Now is that sleep or what? 20 straight hours?!!! You must have been hibernating . Nice dream.... maybe you should make a novel out of it .
  14. It's working for me.... a little slow, but working. It's pretty great. Just goes to show how much you can achieve using just CSS.
  15. Yea... ur right. But it works with fluxbox as well. I think I understand what your trying to say. I'll give it a shot. I think I'll have to do some googling first. I'll post back when I get a solution. Thanks for your time .
  16. Yes, I do use the same password for both coz it is the same user.ok... i've got both the files... and they are very much different. fluxbox only has 17 lines but KDE has 25 lines. But what do i do now? What exactly does the set command do? Give me the environment variables?
  17. Hi, I'm using Slackware 10.1. I've been using mostly KDE. But for the past couple of months I've started using fluxbox. It's great actually... lightweight and all that... I'm just having one small problem with kmix. Everytime I logout and login, kmix resets the values back to the default values. This happens only with fluxbox. In KDE, it restores the settings I kept previously. I've tried both checking and unchecking the 'Restore volumes on login' option in the settings.... but it still resets the volume to somewhere near half. Any ideas anyone? Thanks.
  18. Hi Quijibow,I'll try it out for sure now. I'll do it as soon as I get some free time. Got some exams coming up . Thanks for the detailed info.
  19. hehe... did you also think there would be snake charmers and flying ropes in every nook and corner? Saw something of that sort in a couple of cartoons (yes I do watch cartoons if you don't mind ). Mind you they weren't even old! Quite recent cartoons... 'Duck Tales' and 'The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest'....just goes to show how much research some people do before they embark on portraying India.
  20. True, I don't see what the big deal is all about. I mean, do you want to make it easier for the end users to use your OS or do you want to make it as difficult as possible? It's as if Apple doesn't want it's products to become popular. I didn't know that. I was under the idea that you could run it on any x86 intel processor... celeron, p3, p4. You mean we have to still buy the 'special' intel PC's from Apple? Then what's the big difference between buying a Mac and an intel PC? Obviously, if they are going to fine tune the chip to give optimal performance with MacOS, it'll suck big time with other OS's like Windows or Linux. We'll have another whole new range of compatibility issues. Dam... are these people crazy? x-( I didn't know that. You mean to say it looks just the same ... or it is the same? IMO, something is really wrong in their (Apple's) philosophy. How about the IPod? They made a great product and gave everyone a pain in the behind by making it difficult to change the batteries yourself. Ok, many people can do it themselves, but what about people who are completely tech-ignorant? Does Apple want to make their products more useful and versatile or not?
  21. You mean move everything from / to '/slacky'. But what about the bootloader? Won't that get all messed up? How will I restore the bootloader if I want slack back the way it was. Sorry for being a pest, but I just want to know for sure before I proceed. I've spent days with this customisation. No, I can't do that. Too much data in those partitions. There are 3 partitions on the whole and each one has a ton of music, games and movies.
  22. ok... so, let's say I want to install gentoo right now. I've got a windows xp and a slackware 10.1 installation already. Computer configuration is as follows:1. Linux partition : 7GB EXT3 2. Windows : 128GB in NTFS and 15GB in FAT32. I want to install gentoo on a trial basis only. I don't want to lose either of my installations because they are heavily customised and working as fine and as fast as I could tune them to. Is there any way to try gentoo out as a regular install? I know going for a virtual machine is one option, but for some reason I dislike using virtual machines. Will it be possible to install gentoo and again change everything back to the way it was without any harm? Thanks.
  23. Really? I didn't know that. I was kind of googling and I came across the template. I'll post a link back to his page on the site. Thanks for pointing it out moon .
  24. IMO, isn't that inherently taken care of? I mean like, it's only after they review the posts made by the noobs that they are given hosting. If someone is found spamming or posting nonsense, doesn't help them get hosting. And if hosted members start spamming, then they are given warnings. Too many warnings => ban.
  25. After seeing some movies and reading in some books, obviously people begin to think that there is something very mysterious in PI. Countless instances are there.... 'Contact' by 'Carl Sagan' , 'Da Vinci Code' by 'Dan Brown' (he talks about PHI as well) and how about the black and white movie titled 'PI' in which he claims PI can be used to predict the stock market.... There seem to be people who are obsessed in finding an inherent pattern in PI whether it exists or not. As for me .... I don't really understand what's the big deal with PI. Sure, PI multiplied with the area of a square gives you four times the area of the circle inscribed in it. Good for you and the square... but what is the real point of it? To me, it's just another irrational number. I find it just about as interesting as the square root of 2 .
