  1. I have only used OpenDNS a few times as my computer's preferred DNS server, simply because I found using my own Internet Service Provider's DNS servers much more convenient and quicker to respond because they are geographically located closer to me. However, the OpenDNS's DNS service were quite useful when my ISP's DNS servers did go down for a few days, allowing me to switch to a backup source of DNS information and re-connecting back to the Internet until my ISP fixed the problem. The only disadvantage with the free OpenDNS plan is that ads appear if you try and visit a non-existent domain or one that has been blocked on their filters.
  2. Most of the time where voting or answering quizzes via SMS, you will be paying extra fees. Unlike the normal SMS fees you pay per message, you may be charged a few dollars extra if you call certain 'Premium SMS' numbers. I suppose it is nothing new, just remember that the are always terms and conditions hidden that say that you will be charged high rates. Fortunately, some mobile phone service providers allow you to disable access to these Premium SMS numbers, thus avoiding any excessive / extra cost on your mobile phone bill. Also, beware of Free SMS sites that require you to enter your mobile phone number, You are very likely to receive SMS advertising message from them, so avoid that if you don't want to receive SPAM.
  3. Why not try out Windows Live Messeger? Beside supporting Instant Messaging, you can also start voice calls or even video calls to your contacts for free. Besides talking with your fellow Windows Live Messenger contacts, you can also talk to those running Yahoo Messenger without having to install a different Instant Messaging client. However, it seems like Trillian is still the best Instant Messaging client to support multiple different IM networks including Windows Live, Yahoo, AOL, Google and ICQ, although the Pro version is not free and does cost $25 for new users and $10 for uprading users. I have used in the best when I had been unable to install MSN Messeger (the old name of Windows Live Messenger) and had found it to have same if not more functions as other Instant Messaging clients. 4. The MagicJacj is an interesting piece of technology, bridging the gap between conventional landline phones and Voice over Internet Protocol. It is great as it doesn't require the user to have speakers and a microphone in order to use the VoIP services, instead they can simply plug in a existing landline phone (which everyone should already have available at home). The only disadvantage here is that if you use the MagicJack hardware, you are restricted to using their own VoIP service and are unable to utilise other cheaper VoIP service with the hardware. Looking at the price, it seem to be more costly to use than other cheaper established VoIP service providers like Skype, although those have high initial costs with VoIP equipment such as speakers and a microphone. Plus, it doesn't seem to have free PC-to-PC calling available with their VoIP service.
  5. It is my personal opinion that global warming is indeed happening because I am feeling that summers here in Australia are getting hotter and hotter as every year passes by.On the topic of taxing pollution, regulations alone to curb the amount of greenhouse being polluted into the atmosphere will not be enough. It will take an emissions trading scheme, where polluters pay a price for the pollution they product, in order for us to be able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reverse global warming.
  6. Some people describe Nuclear Energy as a source of 'clean' energy, but it is actually the opposite. Although there are no emissions to toxic gases / substances from the fission of nuclear material i.e. the breakdown of radioactive elements to release energy, the resulting nuclear waste remains highly radioactive even when stored in secure containers. There is currently no way to destroy used radioactive material from nuclear fission and the only option there is currently is to store them deep underground, as the radioactivity poses severe health risks to humans like the formation of cancers from mutated human cells etc.The only true clean energy that is feasible for sustaining our current lifestyles and world is solar energy, converting sunlight into electricity. From my point of view, other renewable energy options like wind power and hydro are not as effective in producing electricity as what solar power is capable of.
  7. The last book I read, apart from the boring old textbooks, is the thriller novel The Five Greatest Warriors by Matthew Reilly. I found it a great and exciting read, especially with the unique twists and intense action, coupled with interesting theories on the important monuments of our world.
  8. It is just inevitable that in this world there are some very bad people who do hideous acts of violence and murder upon others. The fact the victim was just a child makes it even more heinous and horrendous that such incidents still occur in our modern society. It is just unfortunate that no one was there to help this child from what has happened to him, the loss of childhood innocence in life.Unfortunately, it seems like a downward spiral, with those who get abused under the care of another as a child often growing up and ending up abusing others under their care as an adult.
  9. I would recommend that your choose an Xbox 260, especially if your are into the mainstream shooting and action video games and don't require a Blu-Ray player for a home theater setup. I suppose it also depends on whether you will be playing platform-exclusive games like Halo or MAG, which are not available on other platforms. Personally, I would not recommend the Nintendo Wii even thought it possesses a new motion controller concept because it is more targeted towards family games like sports or family-friendly adventure type games, and does not have a High Definition graphics output.
  10. I have in the past tried playing The Sims 2, but found that the gameplay wasn't really suited for a person like me who prefer more action and shooting games rather than an average pacing game that followed a character around the home. The only thing I really enjoyed perhaps was just designing and building the interior of the house rather than actually playing the character's live along and their relationships with others.
  11. My Experiences with The Saboteur (2009) I found this third-person action game quite exciting and fun to play. Based on the Polish resistance in World War II, it follows an Irish man who gets caught up in the resistance movement. As the player, you complete missions to progress in the storyline, with side mission targets available to give extra contraband, the currency of the game, to purchase new weapons and upgrades. Overall, the graphics are great with detailed and realistic building environments, although car detailing was poorly done especially with the lack of graphics to show that the car is damaged. The third person action game also incorporates a good cover system in addition to a system that allows the character to scale the walls of buildings and climb across roofs, although I found this very glitchy and bugged at times where controlling the character sometimes became a nightmare. Other than the minor problems, it was an engaging display of what a good third person action game should look like.
  12. I found Call of Duty 6, better known just as Modern Warfare 2, was an excellent and exciting game with a variety of unique missions ranging from shooting through the valley on a snowmobile to manning a mini-gun aboard a helicopter gunship. The only gripe I had with the game was that the single-player campaign was short and didn't take a long time to finish through the entire single-player campaign. Well, I suppose most games' single player missions are never than longer than more than a few hours though, Grand Theft Auto 4 being an exception with an elongated progressive storyline. For Modern Warfare 2, I wished the first person shooter had a cover system like some other games like Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and The Saboteur, but I suppose implementing it would make the a bit less realistic as one cannot see in the direction his back is facing.
  13. I have always prefered to be a mage or ranged attacker like a bowman, although recently I have tended to go with the warrior class and the use of melee weapons in a variety of other games too.
  14. Runescape too was my first massively multiplayer online role playing game that I played, at a time when everyone at school was also playing the game. Looking back now, I probably spent too much time trying to level up my character's mining skills to level 69 than actually playing and enjoying the game through a variety of missions etc. To me now, the game is very old and redundant now, with its very simple and archaic graphics system that looks really bad compared to the modern MMORPGs that have pixel-perfect visuals and surrounding sounds. I suppose it is not that bad, considering Runescape runs with minimal size in a browser when comparing with multi-gigabyte sizes of modern MMORPGs.I also have played Maplestory, another MMORPG that is free to play (unless you want to purchase exclusive items from the Cash Shop). This side-scrolling MMORPG has quite good graphics and music + SFX sounds, with a variety of unique quests and items available in-game. However, I finally left and quit the game after finding too hard and time consuming to level up my character, as leveling required on the repetitive hunting of monsters and completion of quests in order to gain EXPerience points to level up the character. It almost become like a significant number of hours before being able to level up in the game. Not bad overall, but just too much intensive training and levelling and not enough real fun in the game.
  15. Age of Empires 2 was a good Real Time Strategy game, as was its sequel Age of Empires 3, by my personal opinion is that the Company of Heroes series is one of the best all time Real Time Strategy game. The graphics were stunning and detailed, coupled with a excellent graphics engine that included destructible environments and realistic special effects. Even critics have indicated its excellence in Real Time Strategy gameplay with a Metacritic score of 93, although the two sequels have fared worse in ratings as most sequels have in the past. Plus, it was one of the first few games to effectively utilise a squad-based control system instead of having to control multiple single individual units. In all, Company of Heroes became the best World War II real time strategy game of all time, with recent strategy modern warfare games failing to meet the same level of gameplay as Company of Heroes has achieved.
  16. From what I have gathered from the post, I understand that you want to find some free flash games to put on your site.Using Google's search engine, I found a site named FreeFlashGamesForYourSite (http://www.flashgamesforyourwebsite.com/) which allows you to preview some games and download the swf files in a zip. You can than embed these swf files into your webpage so visitors can play the games from your own site.Note that not all flash games sites allow you to copy their flash games and redistribute them on your own site, so look for the terms and conditions or the licensing arrangements before publishing any third-party flash games of your site.
  17. Engadget is sort more dedicated as a blog in covering every new and upcoming gadgetry or electronic goods, rather than focusing only on interesting technological concepts that have just come out. It's not a bad thing though, as it gives you a good idea of how the digital world is progressing along as new products and models pop up in the market. To be honest, when reading the Engadget RSS feeds, I rarely read the text in the post, instead I tend to skim through taking in the post title and accompanying image until I find something interesting that happens to grab my attention. You may want to try subscribing to Gdgt (https://www.engadget.com/), another technology blog founded by some former Engadget staff. Unlike Engadget, which seeks to cover all the new gadgetry and electronics, Gdgt seems to focus on the more interesting items that are new to the technology market. On Lifehacker, I used to be former subscriber to their RSS feeds, until one day I got sick of their "life-hacking" productivity tips and tutorials on how to use certain software. In some way, I just found reading their news feed just too boring to read through all the unnecessary and irrelevant content. However, I still subscribe to Ars Technica, which highlights the technology issues and happenings in the digital world.Hopefully, your site can cover all the pitfalls of the modern technology blog and deliver to the right and relevant content to us readers. Good luck with your new blog!
  18. Google Reader (https://www.google.com/reader/about/) would be the best option for you to try out reading RSS feeds, as the reader is web-based and does not require any installation as it runs straight from the browser. If you prefer a desktop reader, I suggest you try out Brief (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/brief/), an extension for Mozilla Firefox that can read RSS feeds too.Based on previous experiences, I am currently using Google Reader to read technology news feeds instead of Brief as Google Reader updates the feeds every hour if they are popular. Often, I find that with popular RSS feeds where there is more than 40+ items in the feed, that Brief is unable to collect more than the latest 40 items, especially if you do not update regular e,g, you will find missing items if you update, lets say every 24 hours.
  19. Although I understand the manufacturers / designer's purpose is to create a minimalist and compact mobile phone, such a small mobile phone would simply not be practical for everyday consumer usage. Besides not having a full keypad (physical or touch), it is heavily limited in function, especially in a digital phone where people actively use smartphone functions to access and browse the Internet. From my point of view, this phone is more useful as an emergency phone for children with one-click access to an emergency contact e.g. parents or family friends.
  20. Interesting there are a few other ways that laptops have been broken: (1) Recently, a American woman had her MacBook shot with three bullets by Israeli border guards. The entire laptop, apart from the hard disk drive with its data intact, was destroyed. Article: http://appleinsider.com/topic/general/y_officers.html (2) Another way to have a laptop broken was to get it run over by a truck. In this case, another aluminimum MacBook was run over and bent beyond being usable. Article: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  21. I personally feel that such high priced applications are unnecessary, because in the end you are economically better off if you sell an iPhone application at a lower price but sell more units of it. In the end, you will get a better profit then selling less units at the high prices.Apart from the more expensive applications, some of the applications listed in the Top 10 list reasonably priced, like the business applications iDcrm and MATG - SAP BusinessOne, considering the corresponding computer software prices for those product platforms.
  22. Working beta versions of Google's Chrome OS are already available on the Internet as we speak. If you want to try it out as a virtual machine using VMware Player, you can get a virtual machine image of Chrome OS at: https://www.engadget.com/google/chrome-os/download/ On the operating system itself, Google Chrome OS is a new and interesting concept in the field of cloud computing. Having used it once, I do have a preference to using a operating system that reads and writes to a local physical storage device instead of simply storing files in the cloud. I'm not against cloud computing though, as I have used services such as Dropbox and Live Mesh to backup my essential documents and other files onto the Internet as a separate backup option to backing up to an external storage device e,g, USb memory stick or external hard disk. it is just that cloud computing has not matured yet to become a fully reliable and usuable desktop alternative, especially in areas when processor intenstive applications are need.
  23. There are a number of ways you can advertise your site throughout the Internet:(1) You can put the URL to your site in the signature of the posts you make on the various forums you visit.(2) Maybe, you could also advertise your site through the Facebook page, or even create a Facebook group for members / users of your site.(3) Other social networks could also be used to advertise your site, including Twitter, where you can follow others and hope that they also follow you, leading to more interest in your site.(4) You can invest in professional advertising in the different advertising agents and networks around, but this is not recommended since your site is not at a level that warrants such investment in professional advertising.(5) Finally, you could always advertise your site through email by sending the link to your site to family and friends, and asking them to forward it to their contacts. However, this is not a good idea as large chain emials are created and some may even be considered as spam junk emails.
  24. According to the WHOIS records for the domain name "Loser.com", the domain is owned by a person named 'Brian Connelly' of United States. This means that he seems to be choosing to redirect to Google.com himself and that the domain name is not controlled or owned by Google Inc. The reason why some of you have been redirected to different places when visiting Loser.com is because it redirects you to the main Google page at Google.com, at which Google then checks the location (country) of your IP address and redirects to the relevant Google homepage for that specific country. Interestingly, the domain Loser.com is actually for sale on Sedo, although it seems to be held by a domain squatter who is demanding large sums of money for the domain, considering the number of offers refused.
  25. Interesting tabloid style theme / template on your Blogger blog, with the full page width logo header at the top amd the use of a serif font for the logo. However, apart from the lack of graphical elements (not a bad thing if your blog is aimed at being minimalistic and using plenty of white space), there are some issues I would like to point out about your site:(1) I found the posititioning of the two columns very unusual, especially with the sidebar placed on the left instead of the right where sidebars are usually located on most blogs. It sort of in someway takes away the focus from the content and becomes more focused on pushing visitors to subscribe to the blog's RSS feed instead of having a look at the content first.(2) The fluid layout is another problem, since a maximum width of the page is not set in the styling of the CSS. On large resolution monitors, such as mine on 1920x1200px, the page stretches to fill the whole screen, resulting in the post content in addition to the sidebar being stretched and thus making the content very difficult to read (It is known that a long line text length makes it difficult for users to read the text, especially when moving from line-to-line. By limiting the fluid width of the blog, you can avoid this text reading problem.(3) For the styling of the post titles, I highly recommend you use Capitals for the start of each major word, if not just at the start of the title. The failure to use capital letters where it is normal and appropriate to do so diminishes the professionalism of the blog itself and like styling issues, can put visitors to leave the site without reading any of the content. Also, avoid placing URLs of sites you are advertising to your readers in the post titles. For example, except of writing "play-by-post.forumotion.com" in the post tile, you could write "Best Text Game of 2010" to make it much more interesting and engaging to your readers.Overall, a blog is defined really by how well the content is written and understable to the reader, although improving the graphical elements and styling of the layout will help your blog stand out to your readers.
