Optical Processors Process at the Speed of Light
bureX replied to fraudulentpeanut's topic in Science and Technology
Well, kind of, but the microchip does not contain any real transistors. The microchip is just a piece of silicon at first, and it is processed in such a way that machines melt small areas of it and place P & N type materials that eventually create a transistor. More and more transistors are connected and form a microchip. However, no real - already made - transistors are used, and I think that's the main difference.Back on topic... This is indeed a nice find! Processing data at the speed of light will surely be a great improvement in speed! Although, I'm not sure if lasers heat very much... Is heat going to be a big problem here or not? Anybody? -
There are some neat useful options that come with "ping", for example, try this command: ping http://forums.xisto.com/ -w 5000 -t -l 65500 This command pings http://forums.xisto.com/, the "-w" attribute (followed by 5000) tells the program to wait 5 seconds (5x1000 milliseconds = 5000 milliseconds = 5 seconds) between each ping and the "-l" attribute (followed by 65500) tells the program to use a specified buffer size, in this case, it is 65500 bytes (that's pretty much large), you can call that a "heavy duty" ping. And finally, the "-t" attribute makes the program ping the specified address until you stop it manually. If you would like to do a more advanced ping, try "tracert"! Type it in your CMD prompt and you will see through what servers does your little package go! Example: tracert http://forums.xisto.com/ Result: Tracing route to Xisto.com [64.27.18.99]over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 29 ms 174 ms 111 ms 62.108.98.153 2 126 ms 20 ms 51 ms core-l3.vline.verat.net [62.108.96.66] 3 107 ms 24 ms 18 ms 213-163-36-57.vnet.hu [213.163.36.57] 4 636 ms 169 ms 212 ms fe2-5-bors-gsr0.vivendi-th.net [213.163.53.245] 5 84 ms 31 ms 20 ms fe2-5-bors-gsr0.vivendi-th.net [213.163.53.245] 6 157 ms 101 ms 67 ms 80.120.176.249 7 132 ms 34 ms 96 ms IIX2-WARSSW01.highway.telekom.at [195.3.70.164] 8 146 ms 93 ms 94 ms 212.73.202.1 9 274 ms 124 ms 146 ms 4.68.124.185 10 252 ms 190 ms 226 ms ae-0-0.bbr2.LosAngeles1.Level3.net [64.159.1.126] 11 229 ms 222 ms 247 ms ae-12-55.car2.LosAngeles1.Level3.net [4.68.102.141] 12 200 ms 1040 ms 479 ms unknown.Level3.net [63.209.82.190] 13 337 ms 594 ms 730 ms 64.27.18.99Trace complete.

Doing What For New Years? what are you doing?
bureX replied to rejected's topic in General Discussion
First of all, I would like to wish everybody a Happy New Year when the clock strikes midnight! As for me, I will probably be at the city center where there will be plenty of fireworks @wild20:Post the first post in the year 2006. here at 00:00 for us! -
Gosh, so much suggestions! :DI would go for these two steps:1) Live CD - Knoppix, Slax or Ubuntu Live - get familiar with Linux2) SuSE 10, Ubuntu or Mandrake - install itI personally use SuSE 10 with the Gnome desktop environment, so far it is really stable and functional! 60% of all work I do in Windows can be done in SuSE! Remember, SuSE is a 1DVD or 5CD distribution, so if you do a full install, you probably won't have to download anything at all if you want to install any additional programs... Of course, Yast is here to do all the updating, so there's no need to worry about keeping your system up to date..Remember: You can install any distribution that you want, whether it is a user friendly one, or an advanced one, but if you want to make all your devices work in Linux and configure your Linux system completely, you will have to use the CONSOLE sooner or later!

Had a website on Geocities about 5 years ago, it was made in Front Page and it was about... hm... I don't remember :DI used SO many javascripts (cursor effects, clocks, status bar effects, message boxes etc.) that my head was spinning when I opened it (not to mention the great deal of errors that I had on it because I probably mixed up some code inside it). It didn't take too long for me to realize that I don't need them and that I'm better off with no site, than a site that is 90% javascript effects So I just made a plain one... Eventually, I moved on and deleted it...Oh, and I also had my first WAP site on tagtag.com, had some melodies, pics and a stat counter on it :(Why did I make my first site? Because I couldn?t believe that I had a few MBs of my own on the Internet! Just imagine... My site, available to anybody in the world! :(What about the WAP site? I also couldn?t believe that I could make a small site that could be browsed with a mobile phone anywhere, anytime! I once imagined laying on a grass field while browsing my WAP site, now that was a cool idea :DI recently combined PHP with WML, so I could place a message in my test site?s news box from my mobile phone, worked perfectly and I will surely use my mobile phone to interact with my sites in the future... Even today I still get goose bumps when I hear the word ?WAP?

He obviously didn't throw everything away because he still has his pockets full of cash, so he's all set for years to come...Or, maybe this is just an excuse to leave Korn with as little tension as possible? Who knows... After all, it's his decision...

Exploding Warcraft 3 Cd my friends disc exploded
bureX replied to FLaKes's topic in Hardware Workshop
Well, his room is kind of chilly during winter, and he has some old windows in his house (cold air from the outside can easily get in)... He probably took a CD from a spindle that stood next to that window. (still dont know why he keeps his CDs over there) The CD didn't fly out, but the front tray panel did! This is not the case for me, I had an 52x LG CD ROM drive that has the front tray panel firmly attached on the tray (it's in a whole piece), while my friend has an Asus CDRW 52x/24x/52x drive that, for some reason, has the front tray panel attached to the tray using some sort of a clip-on system (like every Asus CDRW, I guess) - he claims that he found the panel on the floor and clipped it on back on the tray without any trouble, and the drive worked. Oh, and, even though the CD is lifted from the tray, you saw the mythbusters slow motion video clip - the CD starts "warping" in an unusual way before it "hits the bucket"! A piece of it may have flown off in another direction towards the tray panel because the whole CD was bending randomly. The CD that broke my CD ROM drive had a small crack in it's inner circle. You might think that that is not enough to make it burst, but I recently almost placed a CD in my drive that also had a crack on it's inner circle... I bended it slowly and gently... As soon as I did that, the crack started expanding very quickly, towards the outer circle of the CD (until it finally snapped open)! -

The disk inside the CD ROM drive exploded - bursted - whatever...Disks spin inside the drive at very high speeds and only a small crack on one is enough to make a disk explode! No, there is no fire, but it's still very loud, and it may damage your drive permanently! One of my friends lost his CD Drive's front tray panel because a piece of the broken disc took a hard blow on it from the inside. (he found his tray lying 3 meters away from his PC ) -

bureX replied to FLaKes's topic in Hardware Workshop
Yes, it is possible for a CD to burst inside a CD-ROM drive! It happened to me once, and to two of my friends!First, I placed a CD inside my CD-ROM drive, and what happened? The CD spinned up without any problems, and I started to copy some files from it... After 10 seconds, I left the computer to do the copying and went to the other side of my room. Then, the CD-ROM drive started to release some strange howling sounds (very creepy, I must admit), and a loud BANG scared the freakin' hell out of me! I rushed to my computer, pressed the "Eject" button on my CD-ROM drive and 1/3 of the CD was lying in the tray! WTF??? Where are the other pieces??? I grabbed my screwdriver (even though it was 0:30AM , and I had school in the morning) and opened up the damn thing... I pulled out the drive, removed it's cover, and shook it pretty hard! Small pieces of plastic came out from the inside of the drive and some tiny-shiny metal particles were present too (the writing layer of the CD).The CD didn't work anymore, and I had to go out and buy a new one :DHere's the weird thing about this:Although the CD seemed like it was beyond repair, I tested it out one year after it's... hm... "slight problem" , and it worked!!! It sometimes works slower and is not very stable all the time, but it WORKS! Now, that's a mystery!Remember, check your CDs before you insert them in your beloved CD/DVD ROM drive tray! As for your friend, well, tell him to make a sacrifice and cut down on WC a bit -
Really? Well, you just left your E-mail address out in the open and exposed yourself to e-mail harvesters! :PIf anybody is interested in the art of social engineering, just read Kevin Mitnick's book - Art of deception

Trap-mas 2005 Trap17s own Christmas celebration
bureX replied to BuffaloHelp's topic in Web Hosting Support
I'm going to start my post with the usual "Merry Christmas and a happy New year"!I am thankful that I live in a wonderful and loving family that will give me their love & support no matter what! I also have a nice warm place to lay down on Christmas eve after my Christmas dinner . Everybody that I know is healthy and jolly! I have earned my very own handful of dollars this year, and through the internet as well, which seemed like an impossible task a few months ago for me. That is a great step towards the world of responsibility and maturity. Also, I am grateful that I have a great hosting account here at Xisto and a very nice community as a bonus! Come to think of it, I'm about to celebrate my 1 year anniversary here at Xisto (yup, just checked my forum CPanel - Jan 5 2005, 11:39 PM is the date & time of my registration)! "my my my... how time flies" - I would usually say, but not this time, because I thought that I was a member of the Xisto community even longer than 1 year! It seems that when you have an exciting time somewhere, time flows slower for you :PSo, what more can a guy ask for? Everything that I have now sucks for some, and yet represents a paradise on Earth for others... So, I won't wish for anything. I make my own wishes come true if they are realistic enough! As for the unrealistic ones:1) I would like to ask everybody in the world to put their fingers away from the trigger - make life easier for you and for everybody else! Don't make somebody cry on Christmas, please!2) I would like NOT to hear about the health status of the former Yugoslavian president (currently in The Hague) as the No1 news on TV!3) I would like to get a pony! (just kidding)Happy trap-mas everyone! Keep on posting! Notice from BuffaloHELP: Credits to transfer : 7 -
I had two skins: "Brushed" and "Silver", when I checked what was going on inside the "themes" option (under the "tools" menu), I found out that they were grayed out with a small label underneath it - "Disabled - not compatible with...".Hopefully, there will be new versions of these skins, compatible with FF 1.5
-
Just downloaded it! Works great - it's very stable, and runs faster on my PC!Also, when you can't access a page (due to a e.g. timeout), you don't get the annoying pop-up box that tells you that - instead, you are redirected to an internal firefox error page that you can view later if you are browsing something else at the moment (the page contains a "try again" button - neat!).Unfortunately, some existing plugins that you may have installed with your old firefox version cannot be used with the 1.5 version Well, in time, I'm sure that the authors of your favorite plugins will release a 1.5 compatible version soon :PAnyway, highly recommended! Straight to the download page everybody!

I know that if I would start writing down all my dreams when I wake up, somebody would probably call in a psychaitrist to proclaim me to be officially crazy!
-
I think I have an explanation for this mystery (at least for me, that is):I don't have dreams unless I sleep longer than I am used to. In that case, I start having very realistic dreams, and I can remember them for 30 minutes, or so, after I wake up. So, when I sleep longer than usual, that means that somebody must wake me up, and sooner or later, somebody does just that, he/she pulls me right out of a fantastic dream (in 90% of the cases, I don't even know what was even so exciting about that dream, in 10% of the cases, it's just a plain erotic dream ), and I am very upset about it, but no matter, there's always tomorrow

Now, that's a solution! Works like a charm in many situations! Or you can just try to get it from a torrent, try searching for it on torrentspy.com.Of course, you are encouraged to get the legal version, if possible.

I personally use Internet Explorer 6... Why? Because I'm just used to it! (even though it sucks, but I use Firefox in my second os - SuSE Linux 10) Believe it or not, you have to be an advanced user to use IE! I haven't caught any spyware or viruses using IE, but my friend ended up with a couple of "dialers", spyware programs, smiley central installations, additional explorer toolbars, "sexNOW" icons on his desktop and start menu etc. only after a week after his first day online! Why? Because he just clicked "yes" on any dialog that popped out mindlessly (most of them were offering him to install some sort of an ActiveX control). Some of those windows are asking you to install e.g. a new version of Macromedia Flash Player, while others are offering you "The Free XXX toolbar, get it now!", or worse "To view this site, you need to install this program" (aka - Heavy Duty Spyware). One more reason why I use IE, despite my existing Firefox installation: Some sites have stupid popups, nag boxes or changed home pages that say "switch to firefox!" or "Internet Explorer has prevented you from experiencing a better internet!" - so, what's up with that? One of the Top10 unwritten rules for creating a website says: "I doubt that any of your visitors will switch over to another browser just to view your site". Additionally, when a bunch of newbies (that can barely use Google) start shouting "Firefox RuLeZ!!!111", my stomach makes a 180 degree spin... These creeps make me feel like Im joining a group of junkies, not Firefox users Just take a look at those losers at the Spreadinternetexplorer.com forums! They don't have the human decency to even read what the website says, and find out that it's just a joke, instead they just go on straight to the forums and make one liner posts saying "F**k off! FF is the best!". Would you switch over if somebody made a suggestion like that to you!? To make the long story short, I agree mostly with this site: http://www.anybrowser.org/campaign/ Just use any browser that suites you best! Of course, I also agree that only one browser available out there is not enough, far from it, without Firefox, Opera or Netscape, we would probably be stuck with a buggy, slow, and feature-poor IE, after all, competition can do wonders! Firefox is another browser that will make the Microsoft staff scratch their heads and say Where did we go wrong? PS: Although I did go a bit over the line here, let's try not to make this thread turn into a Firefox VS Internet Explorer flame

Well, it's not a maybe - it's a MUST! 4-5 billion sites are out there (and are indexed on Google, who knows how many more exist?), and you need to fight to get the attention of the crowd! Every visitor counts, and every one of them will recommend your site to another visitor if he likes it that much! You already have a small crowd, go out and expand it! @Everybody: Yes, you can make money on the internet - this is my first RAC (RentACoder.com) check that I have received:

Help Me Fix A Problem On A Laptop Runnig W98
bureX replied to andrescasta's topic in Hardware Workshop
It's not a big problem, I recommend that you try this:- Reinstall Windows 98OR- Write down all of the missing files on a piece of paper and find them on your Windows 98 CD, then, simply copy them to your "c:\windows\system" directory (some may need to be copied only to the "c:\windows" directory, try it if Windows still can't find the file).Windows 98 has the tendency to configure something without actually copying the needed files to it's sytem directory, thus creating all sorts of errors (and headaches)...Worked for me when I had Windows 98.Good luck! -
Yes, you can make real money on the Internet! And why not??? The Internet is a rapidly expanding job giver! To earn money on the Internet, you have to link the "real world" and the "virtual world", to be more specific, you must realize that if nobody is ready to give you a free iPod in your neighborhood gift shop just like that, then that is certainly not going to happen on the Internet! "You are a winner!", "Claim your cash prize here!" and "You just won a free trip!" - those are the sentences that must be ignored. You can search for "Free stuff" in Google, and it will bring you a heap of results, but NONE OF THEM will ever give you anything (I know, I used to browse through those awful sites when I got my first computer)! So, open your eyes! Forget spam, link clicking, getting others to register VIA your referral links, spyware etc. Here are my three main suggestions:- Make your own website and use Google AdSense- Get a REAL job online! Try RentACoder.com, I have earned 230$ during the summer (2-3 weeks of work), and 180$ recently (1 week of work), so it's not a joke! But be aware, you must behave as professionally as you can! Those are real people out there, looking for real people to hire! Things can get tough, and you have to be ready to WORK, no matter what. Of course, you have to be either a good programmer/designer/writer to get a job there, if you are not, skip this option.- Become a seller on eBay

Oh sweet Jesus... Install Two Anti-virus Software In 1 System Is it ok?
bureX replied to Dragonfly's topic in Security issues & Exploits
I guess you can try various combinations with different antiviruses, but that's not recommended... Dont know much about Norton, but Kaspersky AV will squeak and growl at any other antivirus program installed on your system. Also, think about the resources that you are wasting on running those two AVs! I'm using F-Prot, but I only have it installed on my system, it is not running in real time. I know when a file is suspicious, so I simply do a "RIGHT CLICK > Scan with F-Prot!" It's amazing what you can do to keep Windows XP stable & fast! The very first step on my list is to curb resource hungry antiviruses! (And the second one is to keep your registry clean and monitor what programs do you have installed on your system. I reinstalled my OS about 4 times during 2,5 years, but I NEVER formatted my HDD for a clean install! So, no Windows XP clean installs, no antiviruses running in the background, and the result? Friends that come over and use my PC are simply amazed with it's speed compared to their freshly installed Windows XP system that is running on a more powerful PC configuration!) Computers don't make mistakes, you do! Think twice before opening a suspicious file, and you will find out that only one antivirus is more than enough! Also, an antivirus program won't help you when you try to install a spyware "smiley pack" (like the ones on the ads on Xisto), or when you install a buggy program... Your PC will have a mouth full of resource eaters, and your antivirus can't do anything about it! If you really want to keep your sytem safe, you should use Windows Update regulary and keep an eye out for independent AV testing sites (such as http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ ), and choose an AV that has the best virus discovery/performance ratio. PS: Just to make it clear - I'm not hiding in a "rabbits hole"! Don't even think that I'm using my PC for writing letters & documents or playing games! I'm using it for programming, surfing & e-mail and I have loads of different programs installed! And I often run into a great number suspicious websites that bombard you with popups and ActiveX controls!
