  1. I have an NVIDIA GeFOrce 4 MX , builtin to my nforce2 motherboard. I am using Nvidia Drivers (one avialable on their site..) atleast GeForce4 MX has a thing called TwinView. It is another way to create dual boot system for Nvidia cards with 2 outputs. The configuration of TwinView is fairly simple , but it will only work with the provided Nvidia drivers ..and not with built in drivers. One bad point about twin view is that unlike well configured xinerama..it will split an OpenGl app in full screen ..like UT2004 into 2 halves. This is un-uasble on my system which has a 21 and 17 inch screen. Having said that here are some relevnt sections of my xorg.conf (or XF86Config file as it used to be called) Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "Monitor Vendor" ModelName "Unknown monitor" HorizSync 31.5 - 67.0 VertRefresh 50.0 - 75.0 Option "dpms"EndSectionSection "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "nvidia" VendorName "Videocard vendor" BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX (generic)" Option "NvAgp" "1" Option "NoLogo" "1" BusID "PCI:3:0:0" Screen 0 Option "TwinView" Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "31-82" Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "55-120" Option "TwinViewOrientation" "RightOf" Option "MetaModes" "1280x1024,1024x768; 1024x768,1024x768" Option "ConnectedMonitor" "crt, crt"EndSectionSection "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Videocard0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 16 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 16 Modes "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" #Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSectionEndSectionSection "DRI" Group 0 Mode 0666EndSectionSection "ServerLayout" Identifier "Default Layout" Screen "Screen0" InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"EndSection Note this is not the complete conf file. And also note my differnet resiolutions of two monitors in MetaModes. i have a 1280x1024 in left 21 inch monitor and 1024x768 in 17 inch right monitor. Hope this helps.
  2. I am currently using gentoo sources. I used to use love soiurces ..i wonder if its still around cause the guy who used to make them (irc nick lovechild @ freenode servers) retired.gentoo sources is more than enough for me to get a stable system without any hassle.although one day i would like to try some other patches too.
  3. Dual Boot for Gamers ..or better ..get Dual Systems if u r a freak gamer.and Transgaming other wise.If you just want to run some Windows Spftware which may not run without Windows...you may wana try VMWare. They have a 30 day evaluation copy avialble for Linux. I use it to run Windows XP (in which i run macromedia contribute ...it is required by a website i work on some times.)
  4. Ubuntu Live CD has OpenOffice.org..but it is slower than installed on HDD. Also you may wana look for any live CD which contains LyX if you are into typesetting ur docs using a WYSWIG LateX editor.
  5. Windows Genuine Advantage was cracked within hours of being launched. It was a simple java script trick.Any ways ..MS can do what ever they want with their licence ..but if they should stick more efforts to innovation in their products and moeny will be made automatically..
  6. I think its not bad to take cues from Live CD projects (espcially Linux ones)..buit being MS they should have done it them selves...they lack innovation big time.
  7. AbiWord is cool , but OpenOffice 2.X + will be alot more feature rich. No doubt at this time MSOffice is very feature rich. I wonder when would AbiPresenttaion and AbiSpreadSheet come and make the whole suite.
  8. HTML_Guru : please dont mind. I like the intro to http://www.ugomoi.com/ , but frankly the color scheme inside is not that appealing. and information seems cluttered. sickgrrl723: As for my list , i think content tops its all and presentation ie readibility , ease of use etc come second. But come to think of it..ease of use is also very subjective term. I have been using CNN.com for almost 10 years now (for reading news..i know it may not be the best out there ..but its good in some matters) and now i am used to it. I think its easy to use.
  9. Stop using Internet Eplorer and u wont need Anti-Spyware programs.(most of the time). And watch where u go on the internet.
  10. Your question could be posed in some detailed manner. ie which is the best indutrsy level DBMS or which is the best OSS DBMS or which is the easiest to learn/usei see alot of MySql fans here..count me one too. But PGSQL is also good. Industry standard DBMS is ofcourse Oracle. Orcale experience counts alot when u apply for a job. Do give Oracle a try ..they have free evalutaion versions available.
  11. Although wine is good and alot of stuff can be played on it .like i have played MOHAA trhough wine with little hickups..its still an emulaotr. Windows games run best on Windows. You can always try a special version of wine from Transgaming corporation , called Cedga , it is meant for gaming , there are free binaries avialble.it would be helpful if you posted your glxinfo output here.
  12. If you have a fast internet connection , you can easily upgrade RH 7.3 to RH 8.0 and 9.0 via Yum and thenb upgrade every thing to Fedora. jut by button clicks. I am not sure how safe it is but i read it some where. That way u wont be configuring alot of stuff. Other option would be a clean Install of Fedora or SuSe. Check out http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ for further study. I would recomend Fedora as it is similar to Red Hat and as a Server SuSe will not be any diffent ..but is different in configurations etc. (teeny bit)
  13. Windows 2000 is OK but WindowsXP is better in my opnion. If you have good hardware . Atleast 256 MB Ram and above 1.0 GHz Intel procesor (not that high Hz is a good measure..but 1.0+ should do fine) you should get atleast WindowsXP home Edition. Also download and Burn a KNOPPIX cd (Google Knoppix and Burn the ISO and place it in CD-ROM and reboot..make sure you have boot by CD-ROM activated in BIOS , or it comes b4 boot from HardDisk) KNOPPIX is a special form of linux which will not install any thing and run directly from CD (it is slow as compared linux installed on Hardisk as CD-ROM is slower) Tell us if u like this thing. If you are impressed ..and it seems easy to use for you ..may be u can shift to Linux (thats is if u dont use a kind of software which is only avilable for Windows)
  14. I am using MSN primarily. Yahoo is also good..i found it better for voice/video chats. I have yet to try the new GoogleTalk as its blocked in my network for now.
  15. for windows there is a program called Free Download Manager. Its awsome. Essentially it opens up 4 streams of downlaods ..(by making 4 parts of what u r downloading..simultaneoulsy..u can set it to downloads more parts as well) It is Free and very stable and has alot of rich features. For Linux I have yet to find a similar thing. I normally use KGet (KDE downloader) and wget (console based downloader) They dont speed up any thing , but are reliable
  16. You have to mention that what do you want to use commands for. For daily use you may not need alot of commands . Ie you may just need to configure your system once and learn how to launch your browser. But if you really want to learn commands and manage a system or a network you ll probably be better off getting some Introductry Linux book. I would recomend Linux in a Nutshell. There are thousands of Linux distros out there (well may be not thousands ..but i meant alot). You may just wana try few big names b4 u settle down with one distro. Each distro has its Pluses and Minuses . See http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ for details. I would recomend Ubuntu or Open Suse. Learning linux will take time , but if you are stuck with computing ..it will be the best thing ull do.
  17. If you like Open Source softwares..freshmeat.net is a nice place. It will be helpfule to become the memeber. That way you will be able to apply filters to your search. ie lets say you search for a C++/CGI Based forum you can apply the filters of Environment :: Web and Programming Language :: C / C++ (dont worry you get these filters in a drop down choice). Also you can select for differt Operating Systems and stability (ie Production Stable, Mature ) etc . Genrally a project which has been there for about 5+ years and has version beyond 2 is quite stable (but thats very subjective)The catch : this site only offers Open Source Softwares. Actually it doesnt even offer them ..it lets you search and shortlist softwares you need. And then links you to the page where they actually are (mostly on freshmeat.net)
  18. Well what you could do is simply boot in your linux .. and dowload the stage you want to download. If you want a fully customized system then you download Stage 1 ..but it takes alot more time. Download Stage 2 or Stage 3 to get things up and running in lesser time . You can always recompile every thing once your working desktop (for me it would be Working X and Mozilla + mplayer) installed. Then after you download the stage use the guide to compile it. Once you chroot into tyhe stage you will be inside the gentoo system ..its all in the Gentoo HandBook. It would take some time . May be a day or 2 to compile alot of stuff. If you have a slow internet connection i would recomend not to do so. Other wise you can always sacrifice a day or two for this experimentation. Believe me when i say it ...if you get this installed...you will never use any thing else ..for a very long time ()âŹmay be when u get really old and think that computer is very fast for you ..ull switch back to Windows ..) PM me if you have any more questions
  19. hehe.. well i take my professional committments seriously and wont be a mennace to society. I don't necessirly hate M$ ..but in last few years they have been sucking big time (with regards to WebStandards, IE exploits and much more). M$ is a good company ..and I think they can do better ..alot better. I know its easy to criticize from outside ...but what the hell..
  20. Well I havent used them in a long time on my own PC (cause you dont need anti spy ware on linux ). Also on my sister's laptop i barely use internet explorer so i dont get any spy ware there either. I have used SpyBot Search and Destroy and it fullfills my need.As far as i understand if u are an IT professional and manage multiple systems..these PRO versions may help you ..ie clean systems remotely. On the ad-aware site Entripse versions catch stuff in REAL time ..which may be helpful in some cases. As far as home users are concerend you are better off just using a free version. And not using Internet Explorer at all
  21. Netbeans ..mostly because i havent tried any thing else yet and it fulfills all my needs so far. You could have addded Sun Java Studio in your list too.
  22. abhiram, you sound like some one is stiking a gun at you...chill out..dont use gentoo. Its not the end of the world . Use some other distribution. Gentoo is not meant for normal Linux use. It will make you learn more about your computer and operating system than what average user should know. Try other distros like OpenSuSe and Ubuntu. Also what you could do is install gentoo from inside another linux . that way your precious 2 days of life wont be wasted . Go through settings and when its time to connect to internet just fetch all sources ..ie emerge -f system or emerge -f mozilla-firefox (ofcourse after setting the USE flags so you download only the stuff you need). Then you can install it later. Anoter way is to download Gentoo Packages CD. IMO gentoo is the best OS right now for an uber geek like me. For normal user ..any major linux distro (aslso see http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ should suffice) helric, i am a gentoo user for last 2 years. and Linxu suer for almost 41/2 years. I have come to know linux more ..just because of gentoo. Recently I helped one of my friends installing gentoo on his system. He was skeptical first and was very jittery the entire time the system was being compiled (i used -O2 flags and not -O3 , otherwise it would have taken alot more time and he would have chicked out.) Just today he was boasting about his new fast system on lunch table (ofcouarse mentioning my help and thanking me .
  23. Nice , i bet you would also like Northen Pakistan , especially the region of Baltistan, its the same region ..just divided by borders. In the south eastern border of these mountains (Himalyas and Karakoram) you can find alot of histricla places, like where Alexander's army crossed into India and Old Buddissth Monistries ..and ruins of ancient cities.nice pics btw.
  24. advice from a student : don't be locked into languages and programming...you should know programming but not every teeny biny langauge. I would recomend to limit your skill set and focus on making more projects in selected few langauges.SQL is most important from job point of view. You will also need to know XML (not just how to make it ..but inside out ..apparently its very in demand these days). Also Java especially J2EE is in dmenad. C/C++ is always in dmenad. Make sure that you dont lock you self with one vendor and know to do things in almost any environment. I would recomend to stay away with C# as much as possible and concentrate on JAVA. Its not like C# will be fading away any time soon ..but JAVA is much better technology and more mature. (Some prejudice involved here..i hate Microsoft .. ..but i will be applying for their interview next year) Make sure you get trained for these..or if you have courses like these ..pay very close attention to them (for pure Software Engineering point of view) Software Engineering Object Orriented ProgrammingDatabasesProject ManagementOperations ManagemntThese are just for software engineering. And these are failry tough courses . The most in demand skills these days is PROJECT MANAGEMENT (if you dont believe me go ask some of your teacher.)And last but not least....Please don't take it in person . I think you can improve on you written english (your grammer needs littile polishing) It will help you ALOT my friend. I know I also suck at gramer and typos alot..But its due to laziness and not because i dont know
  25. well just to put my 2 cents. Macromedia and Adobe are one company now.
