  1. Why dont you try it out. I dont know where you are living right now ..but you can probably go to a big store and try it out. Atleast tahts what i used to do when i was living in US.
  2. Well i dont have any specific attachment to my keyboard.or mouse ..but i would always prefer an optical mouse , as we have alot of dust in our area..wheel mouse becomes a menace after a while.
  3. Oracle has made recent moves to sort of support open source databases. Oracle is a good comapny to work with/for .But I guess being a big corporation they can never get away with finger pointing. There would always be people saying Oracle is evil...becuase they make money.Personally i liked their move of giving out free 10g DB for Linux (atleast small eval version)its good times for database learning students like me
  4. I guess the operating tempratures of processors must be tabularized some where on AMD site. They calculate this kind of stuff while designing the Processors. But One this i have experienced is that the cooler doesnt mean the better. AMD operates in an optimal temprature range. I think its from mid 30s to almost 50 ..but this is just experience with my system..Any hotter or colder makes my system potentaiily hang.Any ways a quick search tunrned up this : http://www.cpuscorecard.com/cpufaqs/mar00d.htm
  5. Well AutoCAD is more of an engineering software. In movie making I have heard name of maya alot.Personally I have used blender (https://www.blender.org/).Its an Open Source 3D modeling , rendering software and runs on Linux and Windows alike.
  6. gagabepp :Well in major Home User Linux distributions only SuSe and Mandriva are commercial in nature. SuSe has open suse and Mandriva has a evaluation CD too. The commercial versions dont count for home users at all cause they dont provide any thing extra ...except for may be Linspire..from which i would suggest people stay away.
  7. Well it would be relevant if you posted which language you wanted this solution for. I think converting a number into string and then converting into numbers again is an easy solution. In C++ probably the shift operatros would do the trick.
  8. Well first of all RHEL hasnt reached version 9 yet ..if you are talking about Red Hat Linux 9.0 Shrike ..i think you can still grab off old ISOs but i would recomend switching to Fedora Core 4 or CentOS. CentOS is essentially every thing RHEL 4.0 but its free.
  9. IMO , command line is good but its not meant for every one and for every task. IN the case of webbrowsing you can always open up email from inside of emacs and browse the web ..and never leave emacs (or what ever you use) but you wont be able to take advantages of rich applications like FLICKR and GMAIL. They do have a use and have an appeal.KDE and GNOME have design philosphies inspired from Unix/Linux too. Like making tools from smaller tools. But GUI is not in competetion of CLI but to augment it. Its very hard to do GIMP kind of stuff in command line.(almost impossible). A good portion of hackers will still prefer CLI in tasks which require CLI like kernel hacking , programming , checking up man pages, taking hex dump , dropping a fast email and IRC. But browsing internet , playing music and organizing photos , typing in a letter arent tasks meant for CLI. I mean if you love LaTex thats another issue..but i prefer open office to LaTex for simple letters.Last but not least. there is this 90-10 or 80-20 rule which states 10 percet of the features are used 90% of the time. In case of Linux / Windows ..users have similar needs. If Linux needs a good adoption it needs to look in to the needs of ordinary people and morph itself. In effect the Linux Dev people have todecide that should Linux be OS for elite or OS for all(by linux i mean GNU/Linux in form of a distro ,,ie all bundeled packages)
  10. I am running a AMD Athlon 2800+ 2.09 GHz on a Leadtek K7NCR18G-Pro 2 Motherboard...with Kingston 333 Mhz RAMs. The board supports Dual Channel Memory , 333 MHz Front Side Bus. Its a horrible board .I would advise you to stay away from LeadTekHard Drive is an 80 GB Maxtor ..i dont remeber the details. It has inbuit Nvidia Gforce 4 mx video card. I have three memory modules amounting to 1 gb of RAM ..of which i use 64 Mb for internal VGA. I also have TV in / out tuner radio and firewire and USB 2.0 support. By all means its a kick *bottom* system..but its more targetted for Desktop use and not gamingI also happen to have two SOny VAIO laptops lying around but I use and love my AMD more cause i built it..here is outout of my cat /proc/cpuinfoprocessor : 0vendor_id : AuthenticAMDcpu family : 6model : 10model name : AMD Athlon XP 2800+stepping : 0cpu MHz : 2088.331cache size : 512 KBfdiv_bug : nohlt_bug : nof00f_bug : nocoma_bug : nofpu : yesfpu_exception : yescpuid level : 1wp : yesflags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnowbogomips : 4180here are some details of devicesnVidia Corporation nForce2 AGP RAM memory: nVidia Corporation nForce2 Memory Controller USB Controller: nVidia Corporation nForce2 USB Controller Ethernet controller: nVidia Corporation nForce2 Ethernet Controller Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation nForce Audio Processing UnitMultimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation nForce2 AC97 Audio Controler (MCP) (rev a1)nVidia Corporation nForce2 External PCI Bridge (rev a3)IDE interface: nVidia Corporation nForce2 IDE (rev a2)FireWire (IEEE 1394): nVidia Corporation nForce2 FireWire (IEEE 139 4) Controller (rev a3)Multimedia video controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capt ure (rev 11)Multimedia controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture (r ev 11)VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX - n Force GPU] (rev a3)as u can see most of system is Nvidia...i wonder why dont they make their own chip and kill AMD and Intel in the gaming market.
  11. Nice ...i awlays had the feeling that this board had handful of gentoo users...with the signatures and all...which makes me think to get my own signatures tweaked
  12. "Fun? Yes, I think so, you can see in the official site here."well if we can see it in the site ..why write boring details in the post...oh wait u get credit for writing long useless details..dont mind me saying..i am pissed on the fact taht i dont find interesting posts to reply to any more
  13. Well if its on Xisto MySQL server ..u can always ask the admin
  14. Quatrux , well I think its good that HTTPs is used , and it doesnot slow any thing if things are configured properly and properly written website is used. There is an overhead but its negligible..considering the performance of webservers these days.i think http , telnet and ftp should just be dropped in favor of https , ssh and sftp
  15. The best way to determine is to actually see some benchmarks for a certain application (game,3dmark,application mark) on TomsHardwareGuide or ExtremeTech.com. To say that a certain aspect of processor design would outperform some other processor design would be insufficent. The interaction between hardware and software..OS and all the bundeled up things (including RAM , HDD ) make a crazy combination and no one can accuretly predict which one would be better. Any one who does so ...is SELLING it.
  16. A quick https didnt return any thing...but when i checked in phpinfo https comes under registered php streams. I think its enabled ..but u need to setup some sort of certificate ..i will look into it though cause i plan to make an https site too
  17. 100Mb site is not big at all if its content is Music. But i would still recomend to stay away from Flash as its a properity standard. Reseacrh into some alternate ways...like may be streaming audio..so you dont loose your content to pirates.
  18. if you press Shift+Delete ..they just get deleted ...and dont go to recycle bin
  19. STAY away from LEADTEK ...and WINFAST ...bad bad comapnystay away .....i repeat stay away ..my mother board gets fried every year ...leaky capoacitors.
  20. first of all -Please Ask clear and precise questions ...state questions briefly. Most of us dont have time to read lengthy stories..and the admins may see lengthy stories as an attempt to get credit-Dont stick with commercial distributions..As their business model is based on software support. Community Based Distributions like Debian , Fedora , OpenSuSe are good. Ubuntu is also good but their business model has not been announced yet..but there is a very large community of users.-As far as drivers are concerned , I think Ubuntu and SuSe both top the list. (I have tested on limited variations of machines ...but i am confident that they would work same for others.)-Last point...Give KNOPPIX a try before you install any thing. You will get to know about things which are not suported by knoppix and its safe to say that whatever is not detected automatically by knoppix ..ull have to do some manula work about it in any Distribution.
  21. it all depends on what you want to do. I used to do alot of online gaming ..but it doesnt appeal to me any more. if you are a busy mobile student/worker and you wana surf web ..watch movies play music etc you may just wana buy a laptop.if you are a heavy internet user and do alot of downloading ..p2p sharing you would need a barebone box. but you could always install linux on a screenless mouseless and keyboard less system and remotly login ot it ..to to your tasks ..like add things to download queueif all u wana do is online game then u need a full fledged box..with good screen , mouse kb and graphics card..you may wana skip the acceries like wireless and DVD writer.so what do you want to do ..or plan to do with your PC.i have a pc and a laptop..i dont use my laptop alot ..but thats because i mostly stay in my dorm room.
  22. since i use linux ..i dont care about viruses ..and even if i do get some virus ..and i am sending it via gmail...i should be allowed to send it out..i mean warn me all u want ..but dictating what i can send and waht i cannot send is not good.i appreciate the effort where google wants to curb destructive and criminal activities..but lets say ..if gmail were to dominate email in coming years. and it doent let people send things like music and vidoes , and encrypted documents (well you can always fool the system..but the system can always be atleast two stpes behind..and not let the general population do stuff) ..i think google should reverse theri decession ..and just warn about viruses.
  23. for phpMyAdmin you need php and apache setup ...if you dont need taht and just want a plain GUI based thing ...go for MySQLAdministrator. Its available for both linux and windows. I use it some times when my phpMyAdmin is not working ...ie i am updating apache or have to shut it down for other reasons...IMO it has more usability than phpMyAdmin and is targetterd for administrators.
  24. TFTs are nice ...how wide is it and how much doe it cost these days...?
  25. from where are u accessing you site...it could be a bad proxy server at ur side
