  2. I would like to unregister from Xisto.com.Its a good hosting site but I have found some thing which suits me better as it has ruby on rails installed on the system. I know I can just stop posting. But I am not the kind of guy who does this (atleast any more ...)
  3. {sarcasm}]Now All microsoft has to do is make a XGL killer {/sarcasm}, (note they lately claim to work on killers..as they sit ducks during innovation ...and then just react to it later.
  4. have you tried with a different NIC?
  5. what are u using to play sound . Alsa or OSS . If Alsa is OSS Emulation enabled ?
  6. telnet is fine ..but i think u should stick with SSH , its encrypted and should be the default wayto access remote systems. SSH has alot of goodies like Xforwarding and tunneling. If you need a good ssh client for Windows try , putty. I know Telnet is there on default Windows sytems..but putty is very smal application and any one can download it easily. On another note .I wonder when would WIindows come with builtin ssh support.
  7. hehe ... i thought the site TITLE was review of the .NET platfrom at first. Well the color scheme is not Web 2.0 like , try more like Flickr , Gmail look (with AJAX , CSS etc) I know ..functionality is the most important thing . but this color scheme is not very readable right now (at least to me)

    Compiling Help

I cannot access rapidshare easily , but i think you should be able to compile stuff easily. If its a configure/make/make install utility then its using GNU autoconf (most probably with gcc/g++) to compile C/C++ (POSIX mostly these days)applicationAll you need are make , g++ gcc in this case . You have two options on Windows , Cygwin and MinGW. Why dont you give them a look and see what happens.
  9. Another reason to switch to Linux and get rid of those slimy viruses for ever.
  10. I am of the opnion that banner should be as thin as possible. It is easier to read a page with thin or no banner.
  11. its bad , but whats the shock . this happens every day in the world. I thought this kind of stuff wouldn't happen in socieites like North America (atleast molestation of young) . But my perception changed after i lived there for 2 years (you jokers..no i wasnt molested ..hahaha ..very funny) . North American society is very materaialistic and this deed would be their demise..people like George Bush who want to impose their morailty , and people like Larry Flynt and Huegh Heffner who indirectly promote their morailty will never be able to straighten out things. North America needs a true leader at this juncture who can not only maintain a blance between morality and freedom , but can also help spread this moderration to other places (like my home land Pakistan ..where eitehr its the Islamists with Guns or the liberals with morals totally in negation of Islam)
  12. I use dyndns.org. its same thing but with lots of options. It has an option to mask the URL too , for which it shows a pop-up ad.
  13. vlcplayer is the best , works on almost any OS and is so dam easy to use.. no need to install any thing ..just copy the folder. You can easily watch stuff from it on systems which dont have any decent media player (with codecs ) installed.and it uses my new fav GUI toolkit ie wxWidgets
  14. who cares about flash at this speed? what about online gaming...it would be a blast.
  15. It would have been benifical if you posted your grub.conf aka menu.lst. Aslo fdisk -p /dev/hda (assuming its hda ) would be helpful too.I am not sure about it , but it couldbe that Windows rewrote your partition layout. Your / may not be at the hdax or (hdx,y) which you are specifying on the grub.
  16. neat stuff : will try it and see how it works .... yes linux is very configurable. But Distros like Ubuntu make it hard for people to configure things without knowing what they are doing. Windows could also be very configurable but they choose not to. In my opnion the code quality of Linux and Windows is comparable. The only difference is that whenever a bug comes out , any one can correct it , where in MS it has to be Bob Smith (son of Jhon Smith) who is on vaction to the carribian after he got a big bonus for adding glitter to the START button.
  17. i think you should have / and swap on SATA if you wnat performance. if not then atleast SWAP should be on sata ..but then it dependes how much RAM do you have. I have 995 MB RAM available to my gentoo box and it rarely uses the 1024 SWAP i have allocated. As for media files ...i dont think you need them on SATA ..unless you have very very high def videos or have to share media files for alot of clients. As for can it be done ..the answer is yes. But certain motherboards have freaky issues with grub which you wont find untill you do the deed. So go ahead and install grub and tell us if u have any problems.
  18. KDE is extendible and is portable (you can run it on Windows ...google it if you dont believe me) and Gnome is simple and supposedly fast...blah blahall this debate is nice. But if KDE is so good why dont all the big dsitros choose it as default. And if GNOME is so good why dont we see innovations coming in it at a faster pace?the real issue should be , which should the new programmers take. I decided like a year ago i would stick with KDE. (which meant every thing QT or KDEA Application) But the truth is I still havenot found good alternatives to GTK Applications like Gkrellm2 , GAIM and FireFox (knoqueror is good but its not as good as firefox)I would like to see a group working on porting good apps of gtk to qt ..like maybe qtfirefox and qtgaim
  19. no offence ..but the eye looks creepy...kind of like those freemason insigniaB)
  20. I recently had problems with my HDD, I am a linux user and there utilities in linux which can read the SMART healt status of HDD (it includes tempratures and self diagnostics) its likely your 80gig HDD has SMART capability as it became common when 80gigs started coming to market.Secondly what you can do is get Diagnositc Softwares from teh VENDORs website. In my case i got a small 1.4 MB iso image from Maxtor site, The CD boots and performs checks on the HDD,If it says you have HDD problems then you certainly need to get a new one ..cause this may crash any time. But if it says all is ok and still crashes ..you may be having a Power Supply Issue. Better get things checked from your local Hardware Tecnnician / Guru. Hope ur HDD is still under some warrenty.
  21. nice find.but i think its time google come out with its own OS ..there was a chatter of Google Ubuntu..I hope there is some truth to it.
  22. i corroborate every thing said above :I would like to list pros and cons of using gentoo (i have been using it since March 2003)Pros:-You will learn alot about linux, with RH and Ubuntu you will be shielded from alot of info (which makes sense as they target towards a bit user friendly system)-You will have a very customized system , fine tuned in every sense -You can boast ..that you have a Stage 1 install of gentoo ..a plus point for GeeksCons:-You will have to setup every thing. And some times you just want things to work ..like i had to spend alot of time setting up a rare HP Printer on Gentoo whereas it works out of the box in Ubuntu.-Your system will be fine tuned ..but there is no gurantee what can happen to it as no one has tested the kernel and apps rigirously. In case of CentOS or RH the things are tested (atleast thats whats my impression) rigirouslyWell i would recomend that you install gentoo if you have time on your hand and want to learn about linux. But if you are just looking for a good distibution , go for Ubuntu. Gentoo is like a sports car ..you can have one and ride it for personal use..but would not like a fleet of them as it would cost you alot (in this case time)
  23. When would they be releasing it for Linux ..i have the Acrobat Reader 7.0 and its preety neat for linux
  24. I disagree with the argument that windows has more viruses just because windows is used more and so virus writers focus more on windows. It may be partially true. But the thing is if some thing is designed badly (with security not in focus) it will be prone to security problems. As for Mac , one new virus after a long time is not a big deal. The big deal will be how Mac counters it and makes sure that they dont introduce new vernubilities after pacthing things.i think MS is the king when it comes to introducing more and more bugs with patches.
