  1. Well, here's a lil tip :)I noticed my CPU was running pretty hot, (54°C average with only Firefox, Thunderbird, Winamp (with DFX), all those messengers running, so no big programs to make my CPU peak. For the record, the CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 3400+. So I took another look on the inside of my case It's pretty LOL (sorry - I am a girl after all, and a matte black Motherboard with red metallic Graph. Card is nice) And I noticed a very dirty CPU fan, so I used cotton swabs slightly wet (UNPLUG THE PC FROM THE POWER!!!) and carefully cleaned it. Then I noticed a very dusty heatsink, so carefully (with shaking knees) I removed the fan and cleaned it thoroughly with those cotton swabs (take a new one each swipe - to avoid making it more dusty) and then carefully cleaned up the heatsink. It seems to help The temp s still fairly high (50°C) but it's a bit better, for now it will have to do. I don't have the funds for a sweet heatsink and fan. But I would also look into the dusty-ness of the fan and heatsink, since it can cause the airflow to be less "flowy".
  2. To answer a few questions that have been answered numerous times before. If I go into negative credits, what happens? Your site will get suspended, visitors see a page which reads "This page has been suspended". How do I then get my site unsuspended again? You post, when your hosting credits go over 4 and the credits script runs (it runs every hour) then your site will get unsuspended. To prevent this from happening, try to keep your credits over 10. What happens if my credits just go even deeper in the negative? Well, that one is easy. Once you drop below 30 (meaning -30 or more) and the script runs, your hosting will be terminated, the files will be deleted and there is no way to get them back. Not even an admin can do that. Can an Admin or Mod increase my credits manually? Or decrease them? An Admin can decrease your credits, by running your post (the one that needs the reduction - as for the why we do that, I refer to the Xisto TOS and Board Rules) through a script. THat script calculates the credits you received and deduct them from your current credit count. A Mod, however; can not do this. An admin also can't just enter a number to be deducted from your credits, we can only do it through that script that I've mentioned. No admin or mod can "give" you credits, unless through the credits transfer system, which is where anyone can do it, meeting the requirements of course. TheJeffSta - the system you suggested is not feasable, it would only lead to more abuse and more workload for all of the moderating crew. While it seems we do nothing, we actually have a lot of work keeping this machine running as smoothly as possible. This is the way Xisto works, you post for credits. Period. Sorry. Now, the upgrade question : I refuse to answer that one, it's been answered so many times, I am sorru. READ THE POSTS!! IT'S PLASTERED ALL OVER THIS BOARD! TOPIC CLOSED
  3. Honestly, I run CS2 as well, I even let it sit in the background for entire days (even when I am not on the computer) and I have never encountered memory leakage from Photoshop. The only issue I did find was that at some point it seems to reset my keyboard shortcuts, but I solved it by using a different "lay-out" preference set Personally I recommend running a virus scan etc. You could always contact their tech support and ask - that is if your version is legal (not insinuating something, but we all know it happens)
  4. Well I have 2 machines .. An old laptop which I only use when I am forced to (like when I go to a sleepover LOL) Laptop named Dino (reffering to it's ancient nature) IBM Thinkpad 390E PII 333MHz 256MB RAM 12GB HD 32MB Shared vid no soundcard stuff I do have a cd rom and floppy in there Desktop named AperoCustom Built CompuCase Silent Case with windtunnel AMD Athlon 64 3400+ not overclocked running 2411MHz in 32 bit win XP Pro 120GB HB Maxtor @ 7200RPM 1024MB RAM DDR @ 400MHz ATi Radeon 9250 with 128MB (nothing fancy there) MoBo MSI K8N Neo Platinum Liteon Dual Layer DVD +/- writer (can't recall speed sorry) Samsung CD-Writer (had that one from old comp LOL) NO Floppy (which annoys me actually since I do have some stuff on floppies) oh my pearl Logitech MX 1000 Laser
  5. Good question! As for the answer : there is no easy way to do it. You have 4 choices. - Make a graphic with the text so they can see it. - Use a different font, preferably one that is found on all computers (declare a font family for this - it allows mac and linux users to see your specific font type as well) - Put the ttf file on the site to download for the users, so they can see it. Be sure to then also explain why they need that file (this is the worst option really) - Get WEFT and do it that way, it's unlikely it'll work, but still it is worth a try. I've tried using it, but since I used an external sylesheet etc it seemed to conflict a lot, and I wasn't the only user with that issue, so I gave up and just use standard fonts OR graphics.
  6. Just download the software, do a sound check to see if your microphone works, I do recommend a headset for skype though. If you have a seperate soundcard and have the settings right, then you can use your speakers and just a mic without them interfering, but as I said - the settings are important. I also recommend to make sure your privacy settings are up so that only those you have authorized can call you, you'll get a lot of sad guys talking to you to ask to cyber with them, just insult them a little and laugh - that's what I do and then I block em
  7. Well, back in the days (I am talking 2000 LOL) I had a LaTeX course in school, didn't care for it much then, but I did start using LaTeX, and I find it easy. Though I have to admit that I hate using it in Windows, because it's a huge download. LOL But in Linux, I don't even use a GUI for it, just open your command prompt and start up vi (vi document.tex) and you're TeXing away It seems hard at first, but once you know the basic commands, really you can not beat LaTeX. I think I wrote a beginner tutorial on it here, though I am not sure.
  8. In my case - I had to check the source code of my blog. Apparently the code got added to every footer.php file in all my skins for WordPress. And I deleted the code last night - to return and find the code came back Password changes, moody, is per request. http://forums.xisto.com/topic/101-forum/
  9. To colinangus and webdesignunlimited : One, DO NOT SPAM! And this is not the place to post these questions. Posting is done by clicking on the obvious "New Thread" button.
  10. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Other-net.com is my domain, and I only have 4 email addresses set up with it - *****[at]lists.other-net.com (and email list I have for a few of my friends and myself) witch[at]other-net.com - my admin email address (don't even TRY to spam I'll nail you) and then 2 more. Now when I searched through my awstats, I found that according to that who is, I am listed as a spammer in SPEWS, thus my mails from my domain could be blocked. Of course I am wondering WHY? How? What the ---- happened? I hardly even USE those addresses LOL, I mean, I use my ISP account for most emails, for a PBEM I use a gmail account (solely made for USI) and my blog uses the main admin email from my domain, but that's all. SO now, of course I am seriously wondering what went wrong. Any ideas or suggestions? From what I gather from SPEWS.org is that I can't get out of the list anymore.
  11. Now I hate to admit it, but a friend when visiting my blog (hosted here) had the same issue. But then with trojans.... She also uses Norton... My blog http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Some more - Klass went to my site, which gives him an ActiveX error (though I at NO point used ActiveX in my site - only HTML - JavaScript and php) and that originated from an IP address other then my own sites IP (here's the WHOIS on the IP) What also worries me is - the 69.50.177.102/x379 seems to be a redirect to xawm.biz ) The issue in my case seems to be a theme I updated last night, it held a small section of JavaScript code that forced my visitors in IE to download a trojan from a RUssian site. So I urge you to manually check code - in WordPress also the Themes for JavaScript code.
  12. Well, I didn't know the series until a friend from TX told me about it. She urged me to buy the DVD set, which I admit was a lot of money for something I wasn't sure about. And I LOVE FIREFLY!! Sadly the movie, Serenity, doesn't come out here in Belgium until Nov 17th or so :cry:So don't post spoilers PLEASE (I will kick you if you do LOL - and I DO wear steel tip cowgirl boots if needed ) I just love River, I can't help it. And Inara... She is soooooo WOW, yeah yeah, I know it's a she and I am too LOL. And despite Jayne's unrefined behavior, ya gotta love him. Wash is too funny. Did you see Bushwhacked as episode? Where they are all playing the (according to Simon) uncivilized ball game, and the proximity alarm goes off. Wash with a serious face goes "Oh no, what can it be, we're all doomed, who's gonna save us? Who's flying this thing ... oh wait that'd be me... work to do" I nearly fell out of my chair.*wanders off dreaming*and uhm - If they try to kill you - you just try to kill em right back (Mal in Ours Mrs Reynolds) You can't take the sky from me!!
  13. Well I checked your "site" or lack thereof. Which shows you only use it as file host, I have informed OpaQue, he alone has access to view the actual contents of hosting accounts.
  14. Let's say this at first - we are NOT a file host. Meaning, the space provided by Xisto is supposed to be used for actual websites, not to host illegal MP3's. So, for your sake I hope you are hosting ONLY mp3's to which you hold the copyright OR you have explicit (written) permission by the author/composer or whomever created the song. Now, mp3's usually are around 3MB of space, ever though that you could have run out of bandwidth for the month? And unlimited space was never offered. 20MB For the starters account and 150MB for the standard account, the "unlimited" space is actually a bug, for some reason to constantly check the space on every account on our servers, we'd be posing a fairly big CPU drain which would negatively influence all our "clients" accounts. Oh and be sure to check in cPanel, you might have enabled hotlinking protection for mp3's.
  15. Welcome to Xisto I hope you do haunt these forums, it's always nice to have more people posting and providing us with different points of view :huh:A masters eh? Kudos and good luck to ya! (I am from Belgium, hoping to graduate at some point - don't ask, I am 22 and haven't graduated LOL and hopefully end up going to the States to study with an Aussie friend of mine )
  16. Well, Jeroen, I replied in their guestbook, and I printed the protest note, which I will send. I have no idea whether it will make a difference or not (ps if you check the guestbook - Kelly - that's me ) Are you going to send a protest letter as well?I can't believe that they're sending them back - or at least intend to - the boy has spina bifida, my nephew has that as well, and yes, he requires constant medical care. He has had more surgeries than I'll require for a life time (or so I hope). I am beyond angered and disgusted with government policies.
  17. OK, I am using Win XP Pro, you know why? Because well, I seem to be unable to get my audio in to work in Skype on Linux, and the mp3 support still is missing. It's strange, I've done the same as I had done in FC3, but FC4 won't cut it. Mind you, I am unwilling to give up fedora. In fact - weeeeeeeeeee- let's go switch to FC4 and try some more (after saving my book marks LOL)Anyhow, I had very little computer experience, only some rudimentary 386 and Win 3.11 for workgroups. Well, I had DOS, which I loved with Norton Commander (ps. Anyone know how I can install a full DOS on my old pc, no windows, only DOS?) And I got thrown into Linux, I actually made it to the top 3 of the class, Unix System Admin. (Ok, the group counted 11 heads LOL). So it's not all bad, although I must admit that in the last few years of using windows too much, I forgot a lot. But the key to Linux knowledge is refusing to give up, refusing to settle for "oh well, I can't do it". You just use google.com/linux and search. Read all you can find, and you'll get there. Sure you can mess up, but let's face it. In Win you can mess up even easier. One wrong move in the registery and you're screwed. Linux at least requires you to be root, and when you're super user, and you mess up, it's your responsibility.

  19. In order to be able to use the console method as someone described, you need shell access, which is disabled at first, you need to request it, which in your case, I recommend against. If you don't know chmod, then a shell won't be for you yet (no pun intended, but there's no "are you sure you want to delete this?" in the shell) Log into your cpanel, I believe in Site Management it reads FILE MANAGER somewhere, click on it. THat should or open a new tab or open a new window (depends on which browser you use) and in there, you can just click to the file you want to chmod. Click on the file, in the top right corner it should read "Change file permissions" And that is what you need
  20. Topic closed to prevent flame war - nothing personal guys, I too have a job to do here
  21. For some odd reason our cPanel does that, showing unlimited space. The starter package offers 20MB diskspace and 500MB BW.The standard package offers 150MB Space and 5GB bandwidth, as is shown everywhere on the site actually
  22. Uhm my personal guess is - you uploaded it all to a folder in your home directory. Everything that should be visible on the web should be placed in public_html
  23. 1) What brand of computer do you have? Custom built 2) What Operating System do you use? Win XP Pro and Fedora Core 4 64 bit 3) What browser do you use? Firefox and Opera 4) What E-mail client do you use? Thunderbird 5) What multimedia program do you use? (e.g. WinAmp, WMP) WinAmp 6) What Word Processor do you use ? Mainly Atlantis - which is a fancy version of WordPad, and OpenOffice.org 7) What anti-virus program do you use? Avast Pro 8) What anti-spyware program do you use? Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware
  24. My main concern is the knowledge that a lot of people get lost in XP Home and XP Pro (as to which one meets their needs). So I feel 8 versions will only add to the confusion. Also, the Starter Edition is completely redundant, as it is so limited in its uses. Not too many would actually be able to use it from something other then play solitaire, and I am quite sure that it will be THAT version that will end up pre-installed on most new systems. I've read the specifications of the Ultimate Edition and I quote Now, if the audience for the UE is that big, why is there a need for 8 versions? I can completely understand the need for a few; a standard Home user one, one for the more advanced home user (programmers, IT developers etc), a small business edition and an enterprise edition. So yes, I do see a need for several versions, but then again wouldn't limiting the version count to 2 or 3 with customization options during the install make it far more easier on the clients? So to summerize, I feel they've gone overboard in all the versions. Now to move on to prices, I fear for those. I really fear about the prices of these editions. I think the Starter Edition will come close to what XP Home costs, and the Ultimate one will probably come close to $500 or more.
  25. Well, I am by no means a hardware wiz, I have assembled computers before, but never replaced the cooling, so I have little idea what to do or how to do it. First of all, I have an AMD 64 3400+ with the standard AMD cooler, my mother board is an MSI K8N Neo Platinum, I think that's all yall need to know. The biggest issue is that my room is not a cool room, so the CPU on the warmer days runs at 60°C - which I feel is far too hot. I also think my case is not aiding the cooling. It's a case with a windtunnel thing in it, but the placement of the tunnel is actually too far off to the back of the case and too high (compared to the location of the actual CPU). Needless to say, with this in mind, I do have several questions. Which cooler meets both my need to keep the CPU cool and keep it fairly quiet. How do I replace it LOL I mean, I know I have to take the old one off, but the thermal compound, that will also cover the CPU, do I need to remove it? How do I best do that? And which compound to use? Or does it come with the cooler? And if needed to aide this issue, any recommendations on towers?
