Pirated Copies Of Vista Wont Look Slick
moonwitch1405241479 replied to shiv's topic in Websites and Web Designing
The funny thing is - I used to use legal Windows copies. Yes, you read that right - used to. Why? Because I felt it was the right thing to do. (Mind you this was back in the day of Win 3.11 etc) Honestly, I have found it useless, it doesn't provide better features or as Microsoft likes to put it - enhanced security. That is all BS, why? Because they're "Validation" uses ActiveX - one of the first things I disable in Windows because of the gaping security hole. Why would I run a legal windows? For the updates? Heck, some of the updates have killed my computer - forcing me to reinstall. Yes, I update my windows, but only the bare necessities. Usually I disable a heap of stuff. Their "excellent" method of Genuine Checks is a laugh, anyone with some common sense can bypass it. But aside from that, who in a right mind will allow his/her computer to have a constant watchful (HA) eye on its software? Soon, we'll see Windows providing us with those wonderfully detailed errors (sadly that is sarcasm - or hopefullness LOL) when we install software such as the Gimp, Blender 3d or anything that is OpenSource. I mean, if they can see our windows key, then it's not very much harder to detect installed software, browser cookies, history, chat logs etc etc. I ain't keen on all of that. On the topic of Aero look only being available for download - nice move there. The "new and improved special look" was the main feature of the new windows - for not tech savvy users that is, tech savvy users know to steer clear of Vista. I see no reason to try Vista. Oh, I have a 64bit CPU, so I should use or Win Xp Pro 64 or one of the "bigger" versions of Vista. (probably costing 300 or so for a system that still will not utilize the full power of my cpu, while Linux - FREE - does exactly that) -
I think I'll just convert it to FAT32 with Partition Magic LOL - I tried to format it as FAT32 with Disk Management, which resulted in the partition showing up as RAW - thus not formatted. I don't know why, and I don't want to know. LOL. All I know is - I WANT MY LINUX BACK. I have the space and I want it. *runs off to her mommy crying for her nix fix*

I haven't used Linux in a few months, but now that I've obtained my new hard drive I suddenly have the room to install Linux again. As previously stated I would like to take the leap to Gentoo, still doubting on text-based install or graphical installer. But that's besides the point right now. For some odd fluke when formatting my partitions on my SATA hard drive they all ended up being NTFS, if I selected fat32 they didn't format at all. Now, the reason for FAT32 is simple - I want my files to be accessible through linux as well - AKA read AND write to the other partitions. Sadly with NTFS I am not too sure if it works... I know in FC4 it's a no no. Has anyone gotten NTFS partition in rw conditions in Linux? If so, how?

That's basically how I feel Sarah. It's not that I can't make sense out of chatspeak or 13375p34k (leetspeak), it just takes me ages. And seeing it used in posts just makes me cringe. I'll share a little story - A friend of mine, who is in her mid-thirties and teaches theatre arts in a middle school, was talking to me not too long ago, she told me about a friend of hers. And now I will quote her exact typing..."I have a friend that is trying to..." Who sees the wrong in that very partial sentence? I did in fact cringe when I noticed the grave grammatical error she made. I did not point it out, but checked and saw to my great horror that it seemed to be a common mistake for her. For the record, the correct version would be "I have a friend, who is trying to...". Basically, if you use "that" when it is pointing to a noun which indicates a person, that person would be an inanimate object, not a person. If it is a person, you should use "who" or "whose" depending on the sentence of course. While I am far from knowledgable about English Grammar, I do try and can spot some errors. Mistakes like the aforementioned are common and excusable - for non-native speakers, for educated native speakers, it is not excusable. (I am rather pedantic when it comes to spelling and grammar, but it did get me a few "awards" for spelling bees in Belgium) Anyhow, mistakes like that, I have no issues with, but it's the use of "ur" etc that I feel shows a lack of willingness to invest any energy into posting, so it makes me feel that I should not invest my own time and energy in replying. (PS. It is though .. not tho... through and not thru and to/too/two not 2)

Testing A Website Design

Thanks MC, I completely forgot about that.I *try* to make all pages of my site accessible within 2 clicks, also a sitemap (which is what I didn't do in my last websites) should be there, it allows people to find what they need more easily.I do! keep a few rules in mind, or let me say that I "forgot" that in my previous grey-red Gothika design, bear in mind that visually impaired people - even blind at times - will and can visit your site. THey use screen readers or a magnifying program that let's them see your site. Also people with epilepsy will stumble on your site, for them (and some visually impaired people - and others too) it is best to not use bright red, bright blue, neon green, flashy pink, etc in larger portions of your site.So in short, try to use muted colors, colors that are slightly desaturated, it will give your site an overal feeling of calm - which is a key-element to keeping a visitor on a site. Just imagine, you come across a bright red backgrounded site where they also liked using the blink-element and bright green text on that red background. In addition they "provided" you with a loud song in the background. Will you stay longer than 5 seconds? I know I wouldn't. -
While I have no objection to use OMG, LOL etc. it's the "sup im jim jones n wud u blieve dis if i said dat u sux0rs" It takes people ages to decypher it and doesn't really relay anything that is worth the time to decypher. Of course I am exaggerating the use of chat slang, but my point is reasonably simple. Xisto is aiming to be a tech-savvy forum where hosting as giving to those posting decent posts, but then you have the applications of those that can't even be bothered to write their sentences out fully.

Testing A Website Design

I would add the following guidelines :- Keep the used graphics to bare minimum, this will decrease page loading time; eg. Use a background color, but not a graphic and if you do, make the graphic TINY but tileable. - Use enough comments in your code, this will make it easier to go back and work on it some more later on.- Use the cleanest, easiest code possible.- Use stylesheets to do ALL of the looks, including the graphics. Make sure no graphic is statically coded, that way again a new look will be easier. -
I found the following things to slow my comp's boot up time down...- MSN Messenger- Yahoo Messenger- Alcohol 120% Virtual Drives- TUne up Utilities 2006The other applications that do start up for me, are left there. Mainly my logitech control (mouse and keyboard - the "special keys"), Norton AV, CoreCenter, ATi Cataclyst Control thing (honestly have NO idea why though LOL)...Also I did notice that my boot-up time doubled when I added a SATA 250GB hard drive.

Lately I've noticed an influx of people who seem to be rather fond of chat slang; eg. ur, m8, l8, kewl, ... I would like to point out that it *is* indeed frowned upon, this does not show your superior intellect nor does it testify of your maturity. While I understand that it is easier to type this way in chat, it is not ok to do the same in posts here. Mainly because it does not make your post very readable, it often leads to confusion, and in general a lot of people just ignore the post. You will increase your chances on a speedy, good reply if you take the time to formulate your sentences, use punctuation and for the love of all that is considered holy - just to cover all bases - type in plain English. I don't think that we all are English, in fact I am Belgian, English is my second language, but as long as you try - it is fine by me. Just make the effort of formulating your sentences instead of slapping them on the screen in an incoherent way. And while I am on this topic, I would like to stress the importance of not overusing the "Return" key. Don't hit your enter-key two or three times after each sentence, it really is redundant. Just one white-line will do to mark the end of a paragrah and the beginning of a new one. You won't cheat the credits script.

When you apply for hosting and get approved, you'll get an email where you are asked to go to https://support.xisto.com/ to complete the hosting activation. Aside from that, I would like to ask you -shiv- something. Try to use caps, punctuation and less line breaks. It will make your posts more easy to read for the rest of us. Basic grammar and spelling is nice -
If it is a brand laptop, you should be able to find the type of motherboard. Usually Laptop HDD are 2.5" and run at 5400RPM (please don't take my word for it, I am by no means an expert, I just looked into upgrading an ancient laptop once.)The main thing is, sometimes upgrading a laptop's HDD costs more than buying an external hard drive, which could prove to be handier even in some cases. My suggestion is find the type of motherboard, and if you can, all specifics on its current hard drive.

Well, he's Russian, it could even be a she. He's homeless and has nothing. My guess is that he has Tourrette's Syndrome, which would explain the violent shouting he does. I don't think it is funny at all, no one bothered to look - or help. This man has nothing. The something "stuck to his face" is saliva - from the heavy shouting he does. -
THe last few days I found myself busy trying to get my new hard drive working, since it's a popular topic on several hardware forums, but no real solution is given, I figured I'd post it wherever I can get it posted. I want to spare others the same heartache. System Specs : CPU : AMD Athlon 64 3400+Mobo : MSI K8N Neo PlatinumChipset : nVidia nForce 3 250Gb GraCa : ATi Radeon 9250 with 128MBHD IDE : Maxtor 120GB @ 7200RPM HD SATA : Maxtor DiamondMax10 250GB @ 7200RPM with 16MB CacheCD : Samsung CD-Writer (Forgot the rest LOL)DVD : AOpen DUW1608/ARR (I recommend no one buy this, it's pretty much crap)BIOS version : 2.10 - All drivers are the latest I could get my hands on (Firmware updated as well)Issue :I had purchased my first SATA drive, which seems to be SATA2, so you can say I was rather enthusiastic when I opened my case and inserted the drive. What I first found was that the new SATA's no longer use a 4-pin Molex but a 15-pin SATA power chord, which made me happy, since my PSU does have that. (It's a 350W PSU btw)NOTE : Remember to check your motherboard specs to know if it supports SATA II or not, if it doesn't - several SATA drives have a jumper that downgrades their native speed to 1.5Gbps, which is SATA I speeds. Strangely on my Mobo I couldn't find SATA1 and SATA2 but SATA3 and SATA4 were there, so it was ok. I hook up the drive, nothing special there. As a happy camper, I turned on my computer, and checked the BIOS to see if the drive was found - which it was. I continued on into Windows, and to my amazement the drive was NOT there. Thanks to a sweet helper from Holland, Jipman, I learned that I don't need to install God knows what software to get a SATA drive to work, he had the same drives and got them to work without. I trust his word over a lot of people, so I followed his advice and didn't install extra stuff. In stead I went into Disk Management (Right-click on My Computer - Manage) and checked if the drive was there. With the jumper set on 3.0Gbps it wasn't noted as being online, with the jumper set to 1.5Gbps it was.Now with the drive noted as online in Disk Management, but not anywhere else (but Device Manager) I was worried. But as per Jipman's advice, I should just format it from Disk Management (which was also noted on the Maxtor website). Alas, I got an I/O Controller Error after which the drive vanished from DIsk Management. So again a reboot, trying the same from Partition Magic, again only errors appeared and the drive vanished again.I even tried unhooking my IDE drive to work solely on the SATa by installing Linux, just to test if it wasn't a Windows issue - which we all know can happen faster than we think. Even then I got an error, couldn't write partition table. So I knew it had to be or a faulty drive, faulty SATA Cable or my motherboard. Being duly angered, I took the drive back to the shop where I bought it from, they were able to format it - on a VIA Chipset based system. This lead me to feel it was indeed my motherboard. As I had found on several sites, nForce Chipsets kept on having issues with SATA drives. But then for some odd reason, I stumbled upon a Q&A on the nVidia Website, where a patch was brought out for exactly my issue. My drive supports NCQ (Native Command Queue) which is not liked by nForce Chipsets. As soon as I downloaded the patch and applied it - and rebooted as requested, the darned thing worked. I formatted it and it's now running quietly (what a difference with IDE btw!) and smoothly. Right now, I can only hope nVidia brings out a patch/update that will allow us nVidia Chipset users to use SATA drives with NCQ, but when it is enabled, you will NOT get the drive to work. I know, because I tried for 3 days. Even to the point of my windows no longer booting when the drive was hooked up - which I bypassed by enabling RAID in my BIOS (and no, that is actually standardly included in BIOS versions from 2.x). In order for me to disable the NCQ, I had to have the drive connected, which worked if I enabled the RAID. After the patch, I rebooted, went into my BIOS (for the gazillionth time), disabled RAID - and look and behold - the drive worked! Now that I've explained everything I did, with the skipping of the repetition of all this tries, the simple solution is DISABLE NCQ y downloading a patch from the nVidia website. I only know this to work with Maxtor DiamondMax 10 since that's the drive I had the issues with, so it's a risk you have to take for yourself.

Haven't tried a different NIC, I was going to get one, but then this one started working again - so I didn't bother. Also my comp is scanned every other day for virusses, trojans, spyware etc. I am kinda anal about that. So that's all ok. My drivers have recently been updated, my bios should be up to date even. So I don't know.Adding to this :I have the latest BIOS 2.10, all drivers are up to date as can be. But I found that many others have suffered the same faith and that the issue *is* Chipset related.Chipset : nVidia nForce 3 250Gb - The solution could be a) entering your MAC address statically into your BIOS (should be located on a sticker near the ethernet outlet - but then on the inside of the case) or clear yous CMOS, by using or the clear CMOS button on the motherboard or setting the jumper JBAT1 to clear (you will find how to do this and where JBAT1 is located in your manual that came with your motherboard)

That's the thing, I couldn't change any settings without freezing up the interface to change it :| It's rather annoying. LOL. Though I am considering doing that.

And when I say odd, I do mean odd. I am not a hardware guru, nor do I claim to be one, let that be said. (All IPs in this post are fictional to avoid issues with my own network security) Here's the config of my home network. I have ADSL btw. So I have a router/modem -> Speedtouch 510 which is hooked up to a switch (US Robotics 8 port switch) from the switch, it goes to my comp (internal IP statically set to 10.0.0.150) and then to an ancient laptop for mom (static IP 10.0.0.151). Gateways are set to the internal IP of my router, DNS is manually entered to be the DNS servers of my ISP on both computers. The Router runs a DHCP server, for some ODD reason, I don't really know the use of it though. And apparently the router also is a DNS server (can someone explain to me how to go about to set up the router for the optmized results?) This setup works like a charm the way it is, I can log in through CLI on the router, web based interface and through FTP. I read somewhere I can set it up as firewall, but I don't know if it is possible - I do have NAPT enabled and PnP. Now here's the issue. It has happened twice and restored itself on its own, all it requires me to do is shut down the comp, and let it sit for a few and then boot up (after meddling in the NIC config). It just happens to change the IP assigned to the NIC on it's own, only on MY comp not the laptop. So all settings are erased, when I then try to change the settings back to what they were when working, the NIC interface (properties in win) freezes up, when I then try to kill the process, explorer.exe dies on me. Just changing options works, but the applying (closing the properties windows) doesn't work and the app freezes. You'd say broken NIC, right? But then why does it fix itself? Because it happened again tonight, and I was offline with this comp for 3 hrs. And now it's working fine again. This issue completely baffles me, confuses me. I have done everything I know but reformat, which I will do as soon as I get my new HardDrive (250GB 16MB buffer Maxtor Sata drive )Does anyone have any idea what causes this? Oh, it's the NIC embedded on the motherboard, MSI K8N Neo Platinum, so it's an Nvidia nForce 3 250Gb Chipset
