  1. that looks rather expensive for that CPU, why don't you get like a 3200+ and a better video card? like a GeForce6600 GT?
  2. The Video card my laptop has is the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 and I can play Doom 3, HL 2, Farcry, Riddick etc... with no problems. It is two years old now though, and there is the 9700, 9800 and the new x series have mobile versions as well so there is little performance drop there. The Pentium -M cpus are pretty good, my laptop doesn't use a pentium-m cpu, it uses a desktop 2.4Ghz cpu which heats up a lot and has a constant fan running for it together with a full copper heatsink. My previous laptop wasn't a Centrino, but it used a mobile Intel cpu at 1.4Ghz and that ran very cool, hardly needing the fan ever. The truth is, it gets less dust into the computer, runs more stable and with much less problems so I would recommend a mobile cpu with a laptop whenever it is possible. Centrino systems also use mobile processors and therefore should be no different. Speed is calculated differently in mobile cpus, the value they are rated are only their max speed. You can ONLY achieve that speed if you are using CPU intensive applications such as encoding, playing movies, games etc... Otherwise the clock speed scales to the amount of cpu usage, bringing it down to half the clock speed, even more nowadays to a quarter etc... to save battery power. Also these clock settings are controlled by the power settings in the XP control panel. When set to power save rather than home/desktop it clocks down even further.
  3. You may need a BIOS upgrade, but what is the make and model of your motherboard? It should have speed settings through the BIOS, make sure those are all set to automatic and that the correct cpu is chosen.
  4. My P4 2.4Ghz laptop sure beats the performance of many desktops even though it is about 2 years old now. It doesn't have a mobile cpu on it though.Your friends laptop must have something wrong since the power saving features are only supposed to kick in when the thing is idle, not to actually cool it. It may have its heatsink not installed properly or fan grils becoming too dusty.
  5. whoa, a ptach? after all these years? they should have just got started in the new game!
  6. The page link sent via email says I have 2-3 days left, the main forum index says I have 6.69 days left. Which one is correct?
  7. If someone could find a direct comparrison with a Boeing 747 that would be awesome. As far as I saw, it is bigger, lighter and more fuel efficient than the 30 or so year old 747.
  8. ugh, this forum already has way more sections than I personally like. Adding more is not a good idea I think. If every topic had its own section, then we'll be doing nothing but trying to navigate around instead of reading and posting topics. Furthermore it decreases the chances of people actually being able to find the right section and posts end up elsewhere anyways.
  9. thats some good specs, at last someone who knows what they are talking about :PNvidia 6600GT is an awesome card, I'll buy that over the 9600 for sure. The 9600s are old, really old now, unless you go for a x700 or something (which you can't really find around)
  10. wow, 1km!? are you serious?I've heard of an experiment done in Australia with a USB dongle and a home made antenna dish. They were able to connect at 5km!But even 1km is pretty good, you said you had perfect line of sight, how is that? I'm beginning to wonder if I can connect to my school network which is less than 1km also.
  11. sort of related, here is a list of the worlds fastest computers (not cpus): http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ if you check out the first one, the cpus only run at 0.5Ghz but there are 32768 or them! another one is number ten, the NCSA has 3.06Ghz Intel Xeon CPU but (only!?) 2500 of them.
  12. That sentence throws you off. as no9t9 noted, compilers can be written in any language, no assembler is required. If you go to computer engineering in university, in 3rd or 4th year you take a course on how to specify software mathematically, and you can take a course on how to design and write compilers. They usually use Java or more often C for this purpose.
  13. Well not what the actual question asked but related to the title anyways. I think programming languages are going towards achieving artificial intelligence. If you trace the history of programming languages they get easier and easier in a sense. First there was punch card operated assemblers, then fortran, pascal, c which is procedural still and c++ which is object oriented. While a program may take a dozen or two lines of code in assembler, it may take two in C. Another benefit is that you can write bigger programs so complexity of software increases with ease of programmability. So in the long run it is going towards a programming language where you just tell the compiler what kinda program you want and you'll get it. Which is AI in itself. So then the syntax would be like: "write me a FPS game that runs faster than Doom 3"Of course needless to say, this is a long long time away.
  14. I can confirm the Turkish one is correct! :rolleyes:apart form that, a good resource!
  15. you are right, it would be great to parallel computing. Actually companies are going towards using laptop motherboards for parallel computing as well.Much cheaper than buying a server rack.
  16. My housemate started playing it AGAIN!... I mean AGAIN!? ...hes useless...anyways, a long time ago I beat that game with a Paladin, then a Necromancer, then my favorite Sorceress
  17. well its not Bill, its the person who created the sound files which could be anyone in MS.And its no joke. The cracking team doesn't exist anymore. But they discovered it when they met for some event, I think the birthday of the guy who cracked the software and decided to surprise him by revealing this whole thing.Really funny if you ask me. Another thing is that Sony now holds the rights to the SoundForge software although I doubt they will try sueing MS...
  18. In Turkey, we don't celebrate xmas.muhahahahaaa... (evil laughter)
  19. for the case you only need air moving in and out so running the case fans slower still works and does not produce any audible noise. The new cases you get today are just overkill with 3,4,5 even 6 fans. Back 4-5 years ago a computer case meant that you got a power supply, something like 200W and maybe one fan.I don't advise people without experience to start chopping their fan connections though. You'll need experience wiring and soldering.
  20. I can connect my Palm PDA to a cell phone over bluetooth and get on the net, thats cool. Now I just need a phone with bluetooth...
  21. here is an idea, rewire the fans so they run off the 5V line. Then they'll be really quiet (providing they still run)I have all my case fans (the big ones) running off 5 instead of 12 and my comp is whisper quiet.don't touch the CPU fan though, messing with that will heat things up... quiet badly
  22. well, I've heard about it, but even in my third year of computer engineering I have yet to see a single line of C#It is never going to hold on against Java, there is no way... Microsoft can invent whatever they want, its not going to happen.
  23. intel have a lot of games? sorry but I have no clue what you are talking about... Intel moving to the computer gaming industry?
  24. maybe its just redundant, or maybe some bots don't recognize the asterisk
  25. When AMD says its 4000+ the proc actually runs on 3000. For example an Athlon 64 3200+ only runs on 2Ghz but beats all intel CPUs that run at 2Ghz, 2.2Ghz, 2.5Ghz and even more. They are just far superior...
