Navy Seals -a overview of the US Navy SEAL
alperuzi replied to andrewsmithy's topic in General Discussion
good job, well done, and why should we be interested in this useless newspaper article? -
To all the people under this thread who claimed that desktops were more powerful than laptops, none of your computers is as fast as this Dell XPS Gen2
-
This thing will use direct3d to render the desktop, that should give you an idea about how much power it'll need...
-
lets see, I bought a PDA, Multimeter, wireless MiniPCI card, FM radio transmitter, wireless access point, wireless PCI card, usb card reader, Sony MD Walkman in the last two years and haven't had much problems. The walkman was used quiet a lot, but that was expected, I gave a neutral feedback for that. The PDA was actually a prototype, so that was kinda unique. Other than that I like ebay a lot!

if you got Zone Alarm do yourself a favor and uninstall it. Outpost, as mentioned, is much better. So is Kerio, sygate and Tiny. Zone Alarm doesn't deserve to be called a firewall. Its just a program that messes up a bunch of other programs.

ebay is cheaper, if you are brave enough :)newegg doesn't ship to Canada too, so it sucks!
-
I'm not too sure what hes talking about either. I know of enclosures for 2.5 inch laptop harddisks that turn them into USB 2.0 external harddisks. But I don't know of ones that can play mp3s. That'll make them much bigger... and you'll need a lot of battery power.
-
No it aint, DC only comes from batteries or when you rectify AC with some diodes. UK is 240VAC, which is 240V in AC, the americas are 120VAC.

A first generation T&L card running at 166Mhz with 2 pixel pipelines isn't gonna get him much further with just a driver update :)To be more clear, it is a little worse than a GeForce 2 MX

sorry forgot the harddisk (where is the edit button gone?)it also had a 2GB Seagate Medallion harddisk, talking of harddisks, my next hdd was a 6.4GB Seagate Medallion, and now I have a 40GB Seagate Barracuda IV and a 40GB Seagate Momentus on my laptop. Seagate harddisks rock!

42MB of RAM on a P100??? noway, thats close to impossible unless you got it waay later on.My first comp was:Pentium 133 CPU16MB EDO-RAM2MB Oak Spitfire SVGA8x CD-ROMCreative Sound Blaster AWE32 sound card (this thing was like 3 times the size of current graphics cards! and had its own RAM slots)...and nothing else, that was it, oh, an Epson Stylus 500 printerI think I payed around $2000 for all that... but that was close to the best computer you could get back then. After that all my computers have been close to mid-high range machines.
-
The highest end boards are so insanely expensive that I have stopped judging companies by their highest end graphics cards. Instead I look at the mid range, and in that the GeForce 6600GT is looking very good, just like the Radeon9600 did 2-3 years ago.

You can get the OS and then download the drivers, you can't really do much with them before you install the OS anyway.Since I have no clue about your system I wouldn't know which drivers you need.ATI and Nvidia have a64 drivers now I think, even though beta. I think there are also Creative drivers around, dunno how well they work. All I know is that the drivers are as usual coming very very slowly for the XP64 which is a shame
-
hmm, you'll have to try it out and see for yourself to be sure, but I would think that the harddisk should work fine. You can't be sure about this kinda situation so I would try it out first before getting it. Usually the harddisks on a laptop can easily be taken out anyway.
-
yeah, it comes with Windows media player, so you can do all sorts of fancy multimedia :)there is pocket word, excel etc I think, but its a pain trying to use those with a stylus.
-
I've seen those enclosures for 2.5inch laptop drives, they seem to be a pretty neat idea. I haven't seen one that plays mp3 though. I guess you can get a 20gb disk on ebay for pretty cheap.I could have sold you my old toshiba 40gig drive, but its broken and I'm not that mean
-
You need Norton Ghost to make images of your drives ad copy them over. Copying just the files won't be enough, there is information in master boot records etc which cannot be copied in a regular way and therefore won't let you boot into windows.
-
That looks like an on board graphics chip, make sure your motherboard has an AGP slot, then if it does, look for AGP graphics cards. Ebay has lots of ATI Radeon 9700s for cheap these days, very good cards. Otherwise, Radeon 9600s are fine. GeForce 4 Ti 4200 will also work well with your computer configuration.Anything newer or faster (like a Radeon 9800) will be limited by the RAM and CPU so its not worth the extra. If you are into development you may also consider workstation cards like the ATI FireGL or the Nvidia Quadro. But if you don't have an AGP slot, you are out of luck
-
Both companies are doing pretty good, except Nvidia fell behind a little when it acquired the "tainted" ( ) engineers from 3dfx (which turned Nvidia boards to crazy gasoline... I mean power hungry demon mosters).I use ATI, since I don't have a choice (its in my laptop). But its very impressive, 2 year old mobility 9600 and still runs everything perfectly.Right now if I had to buy a gfx card, I would probably go with the Nvidia GF6600GT though. Otherwise I'm not gonna vote, because as I said, both make great cards and I'm pretty much on neutral sides with both companies.

yes, its probably a regular P4 instead of a Pentium-M so you can remove the CPU and plug it in even a desktop 478 socket to test it out. But don't count my word for it, as far as I know they are regular desktop cpu's in those desktop replacement laptops. I have one too which I regularly take out and clean up to lower the heat buildup. As for the HDD, you can get adapters from ebay to plug it into a standard dektop too, I got one last year and plugged my old drive to my dektop. Seemd to work fine (except the drive is busted now)Or you can plug it into any other laptop, all laptops use the same standard 2.5inch drives, except mounting is usually different. This same thing goes for the dvd/cdrw drive and the RAM modules, except you should check what type of RAM they are (should be DDR 266Mhz) and match those characteristics. The battery and keyboard, you'll need the same model laptop to test.As for the graphics card, that is soldered on the mobo, so you are out of luck with that one.You may even be able to sell your LCD monitor on ebay, who knows, those crack and die a lot and there would be people willing to get their hands on a few.Otherwise you may be able to send it to the manufacturer for repairs too

It Is Better To Have Canon Or Epson Printer? Hardware
alperuzi replied to dino-m's topic in Hardware Workshop
If I had to write my thoughts about epson printers, half of my post would be censored. I sold my C60 for like 20 bucks and got a shiny new PIXMA 3000. Loving it. That printer is the most advanced printer I have ever seen. IT DOES DUPLEX PRINTING!!!Not to mention incredibly good borderless photo printing. This thing is just awesome.Yes so if people are looking for a new printer I highly recommend the Canon PIXMA 3000, don't go for any of the lower PIXMA versions, get al least a 3000, you won't be dissapointed. -
I still get along with a 230W and a P3, one HDD, one laptop HDD and one DVD-ROMyou need a good 500W package, don't go for cheap ones, they use cheap capacitors and cheap parts and fail very occasionally. Get a good solid brand.

Fallout 1 would be the best, Fallout 2 would probably be the runner up and the KOTOR series not far behind after those.
