Help.. With Free Hosting need to know where to start
jlhaslip replied to fai's topic in Web Hosting Support
To begin with, read the Frequently asked questions that you can access by clicking on my signature.Xisto Hosting accounts are earned by posting to these forums and gaining credits. The credits are used to determine the size of your account and its status. If you keep positive credits, the account stays active. Negative credits and the account is suspended. Neg 30 credits and you lose it all. Read the Xisto readme just below the shoutbox. -
The Web Developer's Extension is a great one to have if you do any Site Development. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Check it out.

A good definition of "phishing" is found HERE. and some advise about how to NOT get caught in the phishing game is found HERE. Basic Internet security includes being careful about sending out your email address. Never open an email you do not know the sender of. Never click on links inside an mail to reply to it. Do not reply with the "private" information through a link. I have one email address that I use to register at Forums and another for "personal" use. Guess which one gets spammed? Oh, and Google is your friend.

Pleno, see my note at your forum. It worked fine for me.

I'm trying to remember back to the pre-Iraq Invasion and I seem to recall that Canada's opinion at the time was that Saddam Hussain should be dealt with. That much we agreed with the Americans, but the problem was the methods to be used. I am not referring to the requirement for Military Force, but the methods in regards to the inclusion of the United Nations. A major factor for us Canadians not getting involved had to do with the lack of support at the U.N. level. I also believe that if the UN had've approved the mission, Canada would have gotten involved. Just like they did when the Kuwait Invasion was repelled. (Daddy Bush's Big Adventure)Another thing to consider was the requirement by International Law for the invading force to be responsible for the future development of the "liberated country". The US is now discovering that that is an important issue to contend with. Before the US can pull out, there are a whole pile of things that must be taken care of and it hasn't been easy to complete these requirements. Canada and other countries recognized that a long time ago, and their wisdom is now showing.Just a few points in Canada's defense. These same points would apply to many other countries as well. My thoughts are with all the parties involved, and especially the families of Military and Civilians who have lost a family member in the dispute, on either side. Whoever said "war is hell" sure got it right...

I was cruising through the Xisto Forum this morning and found this really good bit of information about guidelines for Site Design and thought I'd share it with all the fine folks here at the Trap. None of these suggestions are "required" for your sites, but they are highly reccomended suggestions about designing for the web. If you read this forum, read the whole thing, because the replies add to the original topic post and all are valid points. Enjoy. Xisto Guidelines for GOOD web design

phpbb is very moddable and is on the cpanel at the trap. If you insist on IPB, I think you would have to go back a few versions to get a free one. (v 1.3 ?) Other than that, using a hacked copy on this server will get you banned, just fore-warning you. And most Forums have a sleuth to determine eligibility, so I wouldn't install an illegal copy here if I were you. Others have tried, and lost.

Hmmm... interesting proposal.I think the robots.txt would be the wrong approach, because the postings on that thread are probably included in a database along with everything else, and I think robots.txt can only deny an entire filename.Although it might be a security improvement if the Hosting request sub-forum would be "invisible" to guests? Only registered users could view? And only "Hosted" members once the application is approved?Actually, why are the approved forms left available to view, anyway? Let's start with that question. Are we merely shining a spotlight on this by discussing it?

Website Is Not Working! 1 Day Since Upgrade hmmmmm....
jlhaslip replied to savge17's topic in Web Hosting Support
As we mentioned yesterday, the problem right now is getting the rest of the web to know about where we are. With the changes that were made yesterday, it might take another day for the information to get fully circulated. There is nothing that Admins or OpaQue can possiby do to help you overcome this difficulty. It must wait for the DNS Propagation. If there is any comfort in knowing, yours is not the only account that is affected. -
I don't know the answer to this one, but I do know that I would take a large file with contents similar to what you would be compressing and try it using both programs. The results would tell you which one is most effective. The reason I suggest using similar file structures is that the methds for compressing a database full of information may be different than the method used for compressing non-databased information. The white space in a page of html might compress differently than a bunch of white space inside another text document or database. Get it?

Oleaut32.dll Messed Up Windows 98se Operating System
jlhaslip replied to jlhaslip's topic in Hardware Workshop
Did a Google on the dll name. Found an older one. Downloaded it, unzipped, stashed into c:/windows/system. Re-boot. Looks good. All seems to work. Topic closed. -
starryrainbow,Just a reminder that even the old-hands on this forum were once newbies. And people welcomed them, helped them along, and they learned some stuff. Now it is time for pay-back. It is what makes the world go round...There is some mystery about exactly how many words or posts it takes to get one credit. If you use the search bar and look at other posts, the only ones who really know the exact equation are the peope who wrote or installed the script. All we know for sure is, longer posts score better and don't spam. Use the Xisto - Readme to learn about the other workings and going on's around here. You'll be surprised how quickly you can get hosted. I've seen it happen in less than 24 hours. Other times it can take 48 hours after the Application. Just depends on the Admin's schedule.Enjoy yourself.

I attempted to install a software pkg. Part of the install process required an upgrade to this dll, so I accepted the new dll. The install fails to function, however, and this dll seems to be messing up a bunch of other software on the Laptop. So the question is : How do I revert back to the old OLEAUT32.DLL???System is Windows 98se on a compaq 1230

Earthquake Prediction Earthquake where I live soon?
jlhaslip replied to FLaKes's topic in General Discussion
Well, if you had an infinite number of chimpanzees typing long enough, eventually one of them will produce an award winning novel. Point being, just because this site says there will be an earthquake in your area tomorrow (today) doesn't mean it will happen. There were a lot of circles on the map, and they indicate other things as well, like storms and "Ring of Fire" activity. If they all were correct predictions, there would be a fair bit of damage, but, looking at his archves, there are lots of 'misses', so don't lose any sleep over this. -

Did you receive an email from the software when you installed Joomla? It should have the admin name and password in there.

Hang loose with this. Don't rush anything. The least that you could have happen is to become friends with her. On a more positive note, does she have a younger sister or friends?

Unordered List Css Layout two rows of list and sublist
jlhaslip replied to Lozbo's topic in Programming
Lozbo, One of the concerns that has been mentioned time and time again about Javascript is that there is a large (and getting larger) number of users who have disabled javascript, but still you insist on using it. If you insist on using it, take notice of the approach taken by this author. He uses Javascript to HIDE the menu, and then display it on mouse-over. If someone has their javascript un-plugged, they will still see the entire range of menu choices on page load. It is only if they have javascript that the menu dropdowns are taken away. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I think this link originally came from Tyssen. Can't remember for sure. -
Has anyone checked to see if the "speed enhancements" are required? (The pipeline speed-ups from the Xisto tutorial about speeding up Firefox. Here is the link to the tutorial: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/27446-firefox-tricks-to-boost-your-speed/ ) Or have they included the tuning in this new version of Firefox? Might have to snag me a copy of 1.5 later.
