  1. The most annoying thing for me on the Internet is webmasters who like to fill all of their pages with 'fancy' Javascript. Clocks that follow the mouse, changing the text in the status bar, 'Welcome' alerts, whats the point? Not only do they make sites inaccessible to certain people, they just clutter the thing up.Websites that are coded badly are also annoying. A page full of PHP errors is not much use to anyone trying to browse your site. Also, doing CSS wrong or using tables for alignment often results in Google Ads being placed directly over a block of text. The ads are fine as long as they don't restrict my viewing.Sites requiring you to download ActiveX controls are also difficult to browse. You go to the page and get a security alert, you click No, and then you're stuck in an infinite loop until you download the virus and spyware they're offering you.
  2. The BBC tried it a few months back with the Free iPod thing, and they got sent an iPod. You may have to wait a few months to actually get the item once you've got the referrals you need, but usually they're real.
  3. Quite a basic design, but I think it works. You need to fix the box on the right where all the content appears, sometimes you get a horizontal scrollbar on it. Try changing the borders, margins and padding.
  4. A quick look in cPanel reveals that PHP version 4.3.11 is being used, presumeably because the latest versions are not yet stable, or contain too many bugs. Often in the PHP Manual here there are alternatives listed, or users have posted work arounds and ideas.
  5. When you register for free hosting you can use cPanel to install various different forums and CMSs, such as PHPBB, IPB v1.3, PHP-Nuke, Mambo etc. These are all listed under Preinstalled Scripts (or something similar). Look for the Fantastico and Add-Ons links.
  6. OK, downloading music for free (if it isn't classified with a Creative Commons Licence) is illegal in Britain. People have been taken to court and sued for damages to record companies. Limewire, BitTorrent etc in themselves are not illegal, and nor are the torrent files etc, but the actual files you end up with, the music, is illegal.Even websites that claim "Free LEGAL MP3s" all have disclaimers saying something like "We cannot be held responsible for any illegal or copyrighted content being posted on our site. You are responsible for observing the relevant laws within your country."Just don't do it, its that simple.

    Hello

Welcome to the forums! I'm sure you'll have no problems earning the credits for your hosting and good luck with the site.If you do run into any problems everyone here on Xisto is willing to help with virtually all aspects of everything
  8. WYSIWYG stands for What You See Is What You Get. Its used to describe a program that can be used to create a website without typing the code yourself, e.g. Dreamweaver or FrontPage. There are some free WYSIWYG editors around: Freeware Home - WYSIWYG Editors FrontPage Express Netscape Browser (Has Netscape Composer WYSIWYG editor bundled with it)
  9. If you want to find the unknown device, just see which ones are listed and use a process of elimination. If you can't see your modem, its that.Give us the interrupt request number and all the other information you have, some of it might be useful. Also, to test whether the modem works, try setting up an Internet connection. If it wont dial or can't find the modem etc. then you know it doesn't work.
  10. I got slightly faster results: It still seems quite slow for a web server, but it could be firewalls and all sorts of protection to stop DOS attacks and all that.
  11. Our teacher was ill so its been postponed until next week, so we still have a bit longer to prepare.
  12. OK, try checking your antivirus and firewall settings. If they are blocking the installer from contacting the internet then it will stop. Also, if they scan every file that comes onto your PC, that could take some time and cause the installer to crash. Some more information such as your operating system and other software that was running at the time may be useful.
  13. If I were you I'd have a look under the CMS section of the Addon Scripts and Fantastico pages, listed under the "Preinstalled Scripts" section on the main page of cPanel. There are many different systems you can use to run your website, but in my opinion these are the best for an inexperienced user: PHP-Nuke -- It has a huge community and support section, extra addons and downloads, all available for free. Xoops -- Is a little easier to understand adn set up, but doesn't have so many themes etc. Wordpress -- Although slightly overused, it is very simple to use and looks good, but functions mainly as a blog. If you want any more help in setting these up or doing anything on your site, then feel free to PM me or post.
  14. Surely there would be problems freezing people. Even if it did work there would be dangerous side effects. Its like going into space, it sounds great at the time, but when it comes down to it, do you really want to risk your life doing it? Again, copied from http://science.howstuffworks.com/life/genetic/cryonics.htm
  15. Sounds like great technology, must make driving an awful lot safer. Surely it can't work if you've got a huge gash in your tyre? It wouldn't hold air. Pity you just copied it: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/self-inflating-tire2.htm
  16. Thanks very much for your help, OCAC. I'll take your ideas on board.
  17. We are doing some group debates on Wednesday, on the subject of: "Books From The Past Have No Relevance Today" I am arguing that this point is true (we had no choice), but, having never done debating before, I need some general tips and advice on debating, and also preparing my speech with some examples and points. I am the opening speaker and I so far have the following points to talk about: Society has changed making many references irrelevant New technologies, theories and ideas mean past situations would no longer occur Changing attitudes and values make past stories inaccurate and no longer relevant Newer books are more up-to-date, accurate and revised meaning older books are no longer needed Any more ideas, tips, points, examples or anything are greatfully received. Thank you in advance
  18. I'm 14 and I have a mobile phone. I only use it in emergencies or if there are no other phones around.I know people as young as six who use mobile phones, and those as old as 90.A device originally made to make phone calls, that weighed a ton, is now used to send uneadable text messages, and weighs less than a computer mouse.
  19. I've used 2% of my space, mainly in emails telling me of forum replies, GMail alerts and mailing list stuff.
  20. I'm going to vote for Hulunes as the text looks great and the little sparkly bit on the hand looks good :huh:Se?or Maniac: 0Saint_Michael: 0samma: 0hulunes: 1snlildude87: 1truefusion: 0mayank: 0Avalon: 0Froglok: 0
  21. You could eat them if there was sensitive data on there, like financial records and stuff. Other than that I can't see any use for a edible CD! Do they need a sell-by date
  22. I've tried that before. You can get some very random conversations:
  23. OK, there is no spyware or viruses. I have checked with Norton and AdAware and all that, I'm clean. All the cables are in correctly, both inside and outisde the case. Some more information if you need it:Windows XP Home SP2ATI Radeon X600 Graphics1GB RAMAMD 3700+ ProcessorCan get the rest of the specs if you need them.
  24. It is useful setting Opera as IE, but it can be annoying on sites using javascript to detect which browser you are using, and then the entire site layout goes haywire. Then again it is more secure.
  25. Its very unlikely you would get a virus for your xBox. To connect to the internet you have to use a router with it, which should block out all unwanted information. It is a bit unfair that people in game shops get things early, but the makers of the games are trying to stop it now. It happens with everything: books, CDs, computer games, DVDs...
