  1. I wouldnt have thought it was a virus.Maybe your soundcard has a compatibilty issue with aim.why not check the soundcard manufacturers website, see if there is a list of known problems. An easy way to solve this, is to just, format your hard disk, and start again, re install windows.why not try just aim and your soundcard driver, see if there is a colision, before you install everthing else.
  2. Its not true that you need to hard disks. When you load from the operating system CDs.It will give the option to choose which hard drive or location to install the operating system on.You should be able to split the hard drive into two or more partitions.say100gb for one operating system100gd for the second operating systemand 50gb for backups and filesI have done this with XP home, XP pro, and 98Its also useful, because if you re install your operating system, you can backup your files to an unused parttition, rather than writing to a disk, which can get damaged. Also, then you can just copy the data straight back from the other partition.
  3. Yes, it is a lot faster, but only when running multiple programmes, or programmes, optimised for dual core. anything not written to run on dual core, will run at the speed of one of the cores.they are very good for multitasking, as the job is spread between the processors. Also, the operating system will make a difference, windows vista, is optimised for dual core.
  4. They are very useful for running multiple powerful applications. But legacy software (old software written for single core processors) will only run at the speed of one of the cores. Butcause it has not been optimised for spreading the load. This means, that if you use a dual core processor, with 2.2 GH each, (thats 4.4 combined) running a legacy programme on that, will only use the speed of one (2.2GH) so only really half the speed you payed for.But remember, if you buy a good dual core, say 2.0GH or more, even using just one core 2gigaherts isnt too bad, infact, it would have been considered fast 5 years ago.And while that is running, the operating system will often be spread accross both the cores.Windows vista is optimised for dual cores. so it slows down legacy appliactions more that it would if it were run on a single processing unit. basically, it depends on what you want your computer to do, multitasking and multimedia is often suited to dual core.but running older programmes, ne at a time, you might want a single core.hope this helps
  5. I know you can get a dual core 3.2gh each, which overclocks to 4.0 each...thats quite fast...
  6. I can only type at about 35WPM when im thinking. I dont like to type too fast, or I know I will make mistakes in the code, and if i do that, ill probably spend more time finding the errors, than i would have done typing carefully.
  7. With more and more people, and more and more jobs, relying on computers, and IT support. How long could you go without your computer(s)?Now even clocks rely on computers to stop them drifting.everything that a business relies on, is stored on a computer. But what if computers just didnt work?what if we ran out of fossil fuels, and couldnt poewr them, and so, we would live without...Please post your opinion... or vote in the poll
  8. Wow, thats brilliant, I have tried to do that before, I know you can edit a database file with the passords in it. ive done that bbefore, but never used command prompt for it!.brilliant thread!!
  9. The easiest way to make a basic password protection script, is just to create a HTML page with two fields (username and password) that refers to a .js file (this makes it so that you cant find the passwords in the source code) then use a javascript script file with arrays (one for usernames, one for passwords) then a part saying goto a URL "if document.username.value == username[1] && document.password.value == password[1]"using a line like that for each set of usernames and passwords.however that does not encrypt it in any way, or make it so you cant go back to it just by bookmarking it.One way to stop people just glancing at the url. is to make the index.html page, a frameset, with one frame, that takes up the whole page, then even when you click on links, the url will always just be "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; as long as you dont have any links targeted to "_top"thats just an easier way to make a simple login without PHP
  10. Sounds like a RAM or BIOS related problem - If you're not confident with taking your computer to pieces, and fixing it yourself, best get it repaired by a PC repair shop.
  11. Wierd al is great. I love that video!!!!!!although sadly it does greatly remind me of myself.Which just makes me laugh more!!!!!!!!!!
  12. -Computers - The future - Who knows - I often wonder what the average home computer will be like in ten or twenty years time; They seem to get larger, and have more functions, be faster, and have more RAM ect. People always look for speed when buying a computer - But is this really the way forward? If you have formatted your hard drive, then re-installed your operating system; you will have noticed, that things run very smooth, very fast, and with few or no error messages. But as soon as you have installed all your devices, media software, some games maybe, and antivirus, and everything else you want your computer to run. Your computer can be running so slowly......... I think, that if computers were more simple, say the motherboard did everything you would normally need extra PCI cards to perform, and instead of having a photo editor, a video editor, a word processor, a database editor, and a media player ect, and you only needed a few applications to do everything. Surely, your computer would run a lot faster, and it would be easier to use - instead of using different applications for graphics, vidoe, testing ect, you could make, test, and upload your website, from one application. So are we really going backwards, by making hundreds of new features, functions, and pieces of hardware that we only need because they have been made. What if computers were so simple that you didnt need a dual core processor and 2gb or ram for your computer JUST for it to run well. Would our computer world be a beter place??
  13. The easist way is to create a folder on your site called PHP or something, then make a quick javascript page in there, so you can type the filename, and it will bring you to the page you typed the name of. But if you want to test offline. You need an environment... I know that there is something included in windows XP for that, which supports PHP and ASP ect...sorry i cant be more specific...
  14. As much as i know how frustrating things like that can be. I dont think you can really complaine about Xisto atall - Its a great forum community. And Just for postin gin the forums, you get very high quality hosting for FREE!!!!!!!And ten credits isnt really that much... Just a few posts...

  16. Creating a website that actually looks Impressive, like the hompages you see on very popular websites, requires a lot o skill, practice, and lots of good graphics. Allthough a good way to start making an impressive looking page, is to use CSS to control the postioning of <div> tags in the source code. And then use graphics as headers, footers, and navigation, make sure you use a good colour sceme. And mae sure it doesnt look messy (elements all over the page, with no regard for what they are or where they would look good ect.)
  17. I think it depends on how powerful your computer is, and what you use your computer for...But home basic (vista home basic) includes virtually no applications - as far as im aware, not even a media player! But ultimate edition boasts many features that XP professional doesnt include. But if you consider using vista, i would recomend that your computer is well above the recomended specifications (atlease 1.5gb of RAM) as it uses a lot of memory, just to run the opperating system itself.I found it cane take around 10 minutes to boot vista home basic on a slow laptop!Infact, when vista was first released. Only 20% if computers could run it without upgrade - that just proves how much memory and other specifications it requires!Yes - i think it truly could be a market disaster equal to windows ME...but vista is slowly becoming standard, but XP is still wayyyyy ahead of it!
  18. As much as I love the idea of mankind eventually existing mainly on another planet...But i dont think its practical.Just think, we have not yet discovered a planet that we can breath/live on, without life support...And also, if it takes so long to get to mars, or any other close planets, just think how long it would take to get to a planet so far away that it was undiscovered...The only practical way of moving mankind to another planet, would be to have a huge ship full of people, practically creating a new civilisation while travelling through space, many generations would grow and die, before they even saw a inhabitable planet, and when they got there, the new human race, would just slowwly develop - atlest, you'd have thought so....But the amount of fuel it would take to launch any kind of rocket or space craft, that far, while carrying that many people, would it be possible??But i think that space tourism will come along in the next century or two (hopefully while im still alive!) and that will slowly evolve into living on other planets....
  19. They would be beter off using water for air - If you apply a large amount of electricity to water, it will release oxygen, and with so little pressure on mars, oxygen would be safely breathable! Also, you still have the water to drink, and live. But call idea, and cool thread!!
  20. I wouldnt feel bad about it... Surely it makes you a beter person that you didnt just dismiss it, and let it die, but cared for it. I mean, its not like you meant to stand on its head... I have a cat, and its not hard to not notice its under your foot!!!
  21. I have used my motorola RAZR V3x as a data modem before, I have only done this once, in a high signal area, as i dont get signal in my house. But the connection was very slow, and EXTREMELY expensive!! (I wont name the provider!) But i think you would be a lot beter using a wireless broadband connection, or just a normal modem if possible!!
  22. The radiation given off by a mobile phone is fairly insignificant, as you hardly recieve any radiation atall in a small space of time.Infact, your computers monitor will be giving off radiation constantly. And if you think that mobiles are bad, what happens if you need an Xray?
  23. I've used flip phones, slide phones, and just plain old ordinary phones! And personally I prefer the flip phones. They have many advantages like: They use less power as they use a smaller screen when closed, and you dont need to turn on the larger screen to check you messages, missed calls, or the time. They are ideal for music, as you can open a playlist, and then close the phone, and ut it in your pocket! They dont require locking when you put them down, or in your pocket the keys are protected. You mimimise the risk of ruining the main screen with scrathes, as the main screen is protected while closed. The screens tend to be larger as they are foldable - to make room for more. You can check missed calls, messages, emails, battery life, the time, ect. without having to open the phone. They are often smaller than most phones as they fold in half!
  24. Wow - who would have thought that a simple gaming console aimed mainly at people in their houses, sitting in front of the TV for hours, could have a practical use!! Its great that it can be used to help people in a way other than curing boredom...
  25. I havent done a lot of VB recently, but i use to use it a lot.I would recoment for a smaller list, just have a list of distances between each desination, and departure.you should probably plan that out first, by making a table like# 1 2 3 _____1|0 2 72|2 0 93|7 9 0 - some of the maths might not work in that above - i wasnt really thinking. If there are lots of locations, you might have to use a graphical or grid appoach - i have never really used that before, so im not sure how you would do it. But just a list of distances would be the easiest method by far!
