  1. I am a runner and tend to run up to 30 miles a week between 3 to 4 days. My recommendation is that no matter how much you run, take about a day off afterwards. This will give your muscles a day to rebuild and thus your next run will be easier / better. Also, make sure you eat something within an hour after running because it will reduce your soreness and give your body the energy it needs to rebuild muscle. As for distance to run, do what you think you can handle. Start of small and increase as you build muscle. I would recommend starting somewhere between 2 and 3.13 miles (5 k). This is a good run that as you do it more often, it will start to work long term running and sprinting since its the perfect distance that requires both a sprint and a long distance. Once you start doing the 5k in 20 minutes or less, start increasing your distance.
  2. My advice would be to learn PHP unless you are about to enter the business world. If you are about to go into a large corporation, from my experiences they tend to use ASP more often. However, for the general and advanced web developer who works for themselves / plans on that, PHP is the way to go. It is very similar to C++ in a lot of ways since it is Object Oriented with classes and such. If you need help with php just ask since many people here at Xisto know it quite well.
  3. The only was to get mouse input in C programs is to include either the windows.h header file or the x-window headers. The reason is that C is a console language and does not do anything with graphics since a console is keyboard based. However, if you add a graphics header to make the program into a graphical one, you will be able to get mouse input. Look into using winmain on windows. You will see there is msgproc which has a bunch of mouse messages and this is where you will handle mouse input.
  4. First, a couple of things. People keep saying microsoft is so bad yet how come every time a new update to IE is released, they get over 500 million downloads in the first day? To me it sounds like a lot of people use it? Why do they use it when they have choices like firefox? The reason is that it is a good browser and has been around for a while. It might not be as css complient as firefox but since when does the average user care? The average user just wants to be able to easily navigate a page. This is up to the developer and people tend to develop for IE so it has not issue. Now to respond to this quote: The mobile phone industry is not doing very well and the companies are not all doing great. Right now, Sprint / Nextel are going bankrupt because they do not gain enough users and their market shares are falling. I dont consider that as doing well. The larger companies keep purchasing the smaller ones to the point where most users in my part of the states either have Verizon or ATT (Cingular) since they are the two largest and have the best networks. Microsoft has done nothing wrong bundling software into their OS. You can remove any of it using their add/remove window features very easily. If a OS did not come with a browser, we all would be screwed. It would impossible to get any other software or even a new browser. What if i wanted to listen to music before i obtained my internet connection? I would need a player to do that and it is not a bad one. Finally, Linux and Macs do the same thing. The only reason they are not in trouble with the EU is because their market share is too small for the EU to care and they do not have the finances to be able to make the EU any money.
  5. This has been around for a while actually. Over the summer, I was at the Siggraph Conference in San Diego and they had this a demo of this. It is really really fun to play with and definitely works well. I tried it out one of the days and it will be a great thing once it is released. The painting aspect already is there since they have a paint like application that currently runs on it. It is developed for commerical use at the moment as a well to advertise and give people waiting something to play with. I have seen all of the applications they have for it and all of them are fun, entertaining and run very smoothly. I cant wait to get my hands on one of these when it comes out.
  6. I might have to download this and try it out. However, i am concerned that it will cause lots of issues when patches come out for IE7. If you look at their site, you will notice it is a product that is not from Microsoft but a 3rd Party Vendor. This means, they do not know what changes microsoft will be making with their engine and thus you can not know if this will cause an issue later down the line. Personally, i probably just will wait until the summer when IE8 comes out and most of these features will be in it.
  7. Middle is mainly the only one like that. Everyone kid goes through their annoying and backtalk time period and that is during the middle school era. Just stick with your friends, ignore the rest and have some fun. People will pick on you more if you show that it bothers you. Just shrug it off and let it be. High school gets better. People are a bit more outgoing and more chill at that point since they have stopped caring about trends as much and just are out for a good time. Dont ever be mad if someone is making fun of you for being smart because ultimately you will get the last laugh in that one. When they are going to a community college or getting a $25,000 / yr job, you will be making $50,000+ out of college and can just laugh all you want. Good luck, just chill, relax, and shrug of the losers.
  8. The reason most microsoft products are not on the list has to do with how often they are updated. To be honest, people priate software a lot when it first comes out and very little afterwards. Also, antivirus software is pirated a lot because it is what people think of right away when they get a computer. However, no one does enough research to realize there are plenty of really good virus programs that are free like Avast.
  9. The website really needs lots of work from my professional opinion. I do websites for a living and so i tend to look at a lot of them. Your site is very hard to find out what is on it. First of all, like others have said you have WAY to many ads or atleast where you place them. It is very hard to determine where the content is and where the ads are. Next i like your logo but the rest of the layout is poor. Surround the logo with the links and make it a single fluid layout. Then make sure you remove the iframe since they are very bad for search engines and for users. Your site should be a single frame with a single frame and a single slide bar.
  10. Defragmentation of the hard drive is a very important task that you need to do. If you are running windows vista, you can set it to run once a week at night. Otherwise, you can install software that can do that for you. I personally use Executive Software Diskeeper which will deframent your computer when you want, allows you to schedule defrags, and also runs quicker than the built in defragmenter.
  11. Also, if you really want to customize / make a game, you could actually write it yourself. Creating a simple game is not very hard and does not take that much work. There are lots of 3D game engines you can build off of or use and they offer lots more flexibility.
  12. Mozilla Thunderbird is the best mini email client since it has an amazing spam filter built in and can do a ton of things very easily. It tends to run smoother and more friendly than outlook express in my opinion which is why i have been using it. IF you need a full scale email client, Outlook 2003 or 2007 is the way to go and definitely is way better than Lotus Notes
  13. I use CSS in every page of a website for anything that is more than a single-use formatting change. I use some CSS in my layout since to me tables are just fine. I know people say you get better google ratings and quicker loads with CSS but if you research it, you really dont. When you are working with a huge db of information, the only possible way to display it is with tables and they load just fine. The point of css is to make altering the format of you website quick and easy. It basically took the OOP principle of regular programming and adapted it for html. Therefore, use CSS for things that happen all the time on your page or that probably will happen a bunch and format the rest however you would like.;
  14. There is plenty of software to do this. Seriously, just type it in google and you will get a ton of results. If you want to make sure you have great results, google this with tutorial appended and you will get good tutorials on how to do it from those who do it alot.
  15. To listen to my music, i use winamp. It is free and very very easy to use. It produces great sound and has tons of plugins for it that let you enhance your listening experience. Plus, the DSP plugins work even when you watch a movie using it so its really nice when listening to an avi that only has 2 channel sound since the dsp plugins will make that into a great 5.1 audio track.
  16. PHP and ASP do not provide cool effects since they can not change a page unless except when it is loaded. Javascript is a client side langauge that allows effects to happen after a site is loaded. CSS can create pretty effects unless javascript is used since it is the javascript that changes the properties of a css object on the fly. The only other languages that can produce cool effects are actionscript (Flash) or AJAX. However, for a beginner who does not even know where to start, javascript will be the way to go.
  17. Garbage, did you test the site in IE7? The reason is the whole site looks good minus the header. Your SABAS logo and nav titles overlap and are both on the right side. Probably just a CSS issue so you might want to look into it. Otherwise, it looks good and attractive.
  18. The cool effects you are referring to are not HTML. Those would be JavaScript most likely since they all involve dynamic effects. I would just search for javascript effects in google and just look for it.
  19. Hey everyone, the previous topic has inspired me to ask how do you create a good css table layout. I have tried over the years but tend to run into lots of issues since as soon as you start floating divs, things get complex and really hard to give good positioning. Plus, they tend to look different in firefox and IE. Does anyone know of any good tutorials or could write a simple one here to go over how to make a css table layout. Thanks so much in advance.
  20. You do not need to rename the partition since you just need to to change the bootloader and what it calls the partition. You should be able to do this by editing and conf file. The only time you would need to rename the partition would be if in hte actual os the drive name is still Untitled. If this is the case, you can just rename it with the partition utility and everything will be ok. The name will not affect being able to load the partition or boot up since it is stored in a header at the beginning of the partition with a set amount of space.
  21. Yeah all computer parts are delicate and need to be cared for. When you spend hundreds of dollars for a small computer part, they need to be treated as equipment and not just toys. Always make sure you keep them cool and use the correct power and are plugged in firmly or else you risk permanant damage. Also, dont overclock too much unless you know it can take it or else you may be wasting lots of money.
  22. My advice for learning java or c++ for that matter is to go out and invest that 30 dollars or so in a good book on it. The reason is that if you just use websites, you will be constantly trying to find them and most likely not learn the language fully / in a style that is consistant with the professional ideas. Plus, the book you buy will make for a great reference later on in your programming. I have been programming in C++ and Java for over 8 years now and i still refer to the books i have used to learn the languages whether it was on my own, high school, college or in a career. They just are more tangible and easier to located code segments / descriptions of many functions.
  23. It is not useless if you write a site that has multiple languages of it. If you are targeting a hewbrew audience like have a religious document on your site in hewbrew or for any other reason, you would use this to display hewbrew text in the correct order / make sure that it is correct to their standards. Just because your language is ltr does not mean all are. Therefore, when critquing a language, you need to make sure you look at all possibilities since html is not only meant for western users.
  24. My advice is that if you like her and she likes you, just ask her out on a date. Since she is shy you will have to try a bit harder to get her to open up and feel comfortable with the situation but if you can accomplish that, you will get to see her true personality and it wont be shy. Most people who are shy just need to get to know you and feel comfortable around someone before they can be themselves. This just means they take a bit more work but ultimately it is worth it because some of my best friends have been shy people and their personalities are some of the best that i know. They cane be very funny or intelligent or crazy just like everyone else once you get to know them and they get to know you. Therefore, just go for it, try a bit harder to get to know them and you will be fine
