  1. There are many factors that determine a computers boot speed and your harddrive speed difference is not the issue. Just like others have said, check to see what all is loading on your home pc. At a work computer this will be a minimal ammount. You can do this by going to run --> msconfig and checking prefetch and startup programs. Also, go to the startup folder in your start menu and remove all items that are not necessary. Next, run a registry cleaner because a corrupted or unorganized registry will slow down one's pc. I use registry mechanic but many are available and are free. Next, go to pcstats.com and use their 101 tips to increase performance in xp and you will notice a difference. Now, what you need to do is decrease your profile size because this is a huge hit on performance when logging into your pc. Your profile is basically all of your items in your my documents, music, etc. folders. What you want to do is move them from My Documents and put them in folders on the C drive or anywhere else. If they are not stored in the profile, not only will it increase loading performance during bootup but it also will allow an professional or (you later on) to access these files from a separate computer if yours breaks becasuse otherwise they are encrypted and can not be accessed in this manner.Lastly, download and run bootvis because it optimizes your booting and thus will help your computer load faster. All of these things are either done by the professionals at work when setting up the computer or the majority of them are done before you ever get the computer. Mainly, you tend to store your files at work on a NAS or mounted folders rather than my documents and the startup prefetch items are very limited due to how work lets you access programs / what they actually install on them. Good luck, these will help tramendously.
  2. The site initially is really good. It is clean, simple, easy to read, etc. However, the reason i gave you a 6/10 is that not all of your sections match designs. You forum looks completely different in color and style from the rest of your site. Your gallery then once again changes styles. You need to give the entire site a uniform look. Also, your forum kind of confused me. It was hard to determine what were posts compared to topics, etc on the main page. I would clean that up and make it a bit easier to understand and such. Otherwise, it looks good just a few small things needs to be fixed to be a great site
  3. For all my development but c++, i use the eclipse platform with plugins for html and php. I use it because it has all the development tools that dreamweaver has minus the visual part and is cheap. Plus, when i create a website or page, i dont need an editor like that since i am a strict programmer. I make sure all my code is formatted correctly and that it is written very well which you can not do if you use that feature in dreamweaver. Personally, since it is a free editor and does amazing development in basically any language you throw at it, you can complain about it. I currently use it for java (which i wrote a 3d fps game cloned after quake 3 arena for a class in), php, html, and even c++ sometimes depending where i am at.
  4. I use IE7 for my everyday usage while also using Opera and Firefox when i develop in order to make sure my sites are compatible on all browsers and platforms. When i actually am on one of my linux machines i also check Knoppix and the same goes when I am go on a Mac. The reason i use IE is that it does display all pages on the web the best and as much as people say it has security flaws, all browsers do and some just are targeted more. Just wait for IE8 in the next six months and you will be blown away by it
  5. The site has been working and i have been looking at it. Saint_Michael had a lot of good information and changes that i recommend as well. Some thing i noticed that might be a little different (or a bit more specific) than his are the following:1.) Header: Like he said, there is a lot of blank space. Instead of just having the image with your domain name on it, put your name and be like Name - Model with a logo or something that you can claim as yours in the future. This is the area where you need to define the site in a single image and also give a users something to recognize as yours. The picture on the right is great, you just need more on the rest of it. Add a few more pictures whether it is of you or just of a flower (something pink to go with your theme), etc. It will draw way more attention to your site.2.) Nav Bar: Unlike sonesay, the gradient at the top is slight enough that i think it is fine and has no issues. As for the footer, the gradient is tooooo much since it takes to long to change color and the color difference is very noticable. Use something a bit more subtle. I like the links you have on the top but you need more and definitely a contact us page. Plus, make sure your rollover links work since i was unable to get to a few of the sections (specifically the multimedia and personal sections). Just make sure these work and feel right.3.) Content: Your site has a lot of content and that is great. However, you need to make sure you spell and grammer check your content. I was reading your bio (briefly) and there were a lot of run-on sentences and some grammatical errors. I am from the US so i dont know if there is much of a difference in the english here compared to Australia but i did notice some issues. Just copy and paste it into word and run a check on it. 4.) Colors: I like the pink and gray color scheme however, some of your sections on the main page are hard to read. If you made these with photoshop or the gimp, just put a drop shadow on them and possibly a 1px stroke with a shader or two darker color to really draw the text out of the background. Besides, that the colors work great, esp for a modelling website.Overall, very good and should do the job. Just a few small changes and your site will be amazing.
  6. To be honest, i dont really care for your site (no offense). The color are a bit boring and just dont stand out. You need some sort of accent color to bring attention to the links and especially your title. The font you chose, just is really hard to read. I thought your site was name "ak art" and not 2k initially until i was reading some other posts. The reason i think your design needs lots of work is that this is supposed to be an art site and i do not see any art on the main page. I would recommned putting something from your portfolio (or blending a few together) and use them as your theme and part of your layout. The rest of the issues are just programming ones like adding padding, changing the text font, making it blend into your layour better, etc.
  7. I drive a 2003 Chevy Cavalier. I got it new when i first started driving since i could afford it. Now it is a few years old and i will be looking to replace it in the next year or two. Plus, at that point i will have graduated college and been working for a little while so i will have a good amount more in funds to afford a new car. I love my car and have always liked it. It just is me. Its blue, two doors, and has a spoiler. I also have installed a 6-cd changer in it a while back so i never run out of music (and when i do, i bring my ipod with me lol).
  8. Mine is actually quite simple. It means Final Fantasy Fanatics (aka my website lol) but abreviated. I have always loved those games and this was the title of my website so it tends to be a forum name i use quite often.
  9. What you will want to do is install your own webserver with php and mysql on it. I would recommend XAMPP just like jihaslip does since it is very very very simple to use. Also, i would recommend you check out the tutorials on it and on hwo to create a virtualhost so that you are able to test more than one site at a time in a very simple manner (plus i wrote the virtualhost tutorial lol).If you need help, let me know.
  10. This is completely false. A monitor never will increase or decrease the performance of a system. Yes, if you set your display to a higher resolution you may notice lower frame rates in graphiclly intensive applications but this is not the fault of the monitor. This is the fault of the video card because every pixel is roughly 32-bits of memory (sometimes 64) so going from 800x600 to 1600x1200 is 4x time amount of memory the graphics card has to have available and this is just for the front buffer. Most applications are atleast double buffered so you are talking about 8x the memory needed for an application to run quickly. A monitor, however, may improve ones interaction with a computer but not the performance. The higher contrast ratio, the darker black is and the lighter white is. The higher the refresh rate the refresh rate, the better it is for your eyes because it helps your eyes blink more often.
  11. Best resource for game development is http://www.gamedev.net/page/index.html. It has soooo many tutorials, topics, etc. on how to develop games and just do 3d programming. I do research in advanced 3d graphics and have used it just for advice on some of the topics i am researching and improving. I also have used to when i was developing a game in order to get help when i was stuck, find better planning techniques, etc. It is a great place to post for advanced questions in 3d gaming whether you are using OpenGL or DirectX (9 or 10). I highly recommend it.
  12. Thats not that bad for someone just finishing 7th grade. That was about my height then. I grew the most between 8th and 9th grade when i went from like 5 and half to 6 ft in a summer. Just wait til you do the same and have to get all new clothes because nothing fits.
  13. My favorite type of dog is the sheltie. My aunt has always had 4 to 6 of them since she trains them and competes with them in agility competitions. When i was really young, one of her dogs was very very loving and even let me it as a pillow for hours on end and it would not move. Since that time, i have always had a place for these types of dogs. My mom is actually allergic to them so i have never had one. Now that I am about to graduate college and move onto my own, i do not know if i will get one just because i spend lots of time with my family. However, if i were to get a pet, it would be a sheltie.
  14. I have always liked every single final fantasy game. Each one has its own unique flavor and style that they all are good and never are the same. Its nice to know that when a new one comes it, it will be just as story driven as the first with a ton of character development but will play a little different. Whether it is an improved battle style, a board style play, or whether it is more advanced moves / graphics. Everyone is different and that is why i have loved them so much. The first one i had ever played was Final Fantasy VII which is probably why it is my favorite. I have played it for more than 200 hrs since it came out and have beaten it at least twice. I like this one the best because of the number of minigames, sidequests, and how amazing the characters are. It was truely a remarkable graphical achievement when it came out and at the same time it also had one of the best (or the best) story ever produced.
  15. Umm are you all serious? From what it looks none of you really know about programming and why a lot of these features are there. Plus, all of these features are used by hundreds of thousands of people so I would hardly call them useless so i am going to go through almost everyone of them and tell you why they are there / why they are useful. 19. Windows Movie Maker Windows movie maker is a great application for a novice who wants to make a movie. First of all, any other movie makers that are ok cost money. This is a FREE application that a windows user can use to make a simple, plain movie that requires no experience. I have seen numerous productions from windows movie maker that are quite nice so don't say how bad it is til you use it and see how easy it possibly is. Personally, i use Adobe Encore and such for my movies but I am not a novice and dont mind spending some money on good software 17. Shutdown This is a very important feature of windows and every other operating system. If you do not shutdown your computer you are in for issues and more problems then you know. First of all, when you shutdown all memory is cleaned, all threads are closed, and all streams are closed. This is important because many applications leave dlls loaded even after the program is closed which will eventually cause your computer to slow down. Secondly, any memory leaks are cleaned since your memory is completely wiped when you shutdown. Finally, if an application forgets to close a lock on a file or any memory space, then it is unlocked after a reboot. Stand-by only put important windows information into memory and it still leaves the computer running using power in order to maintain the other threads. Hibernate does turn off all power but it just puts EVERYTHING onto the harddrive and then loads it from there. This does not fix memory leaks or loaded dlls. Therefore, you need to shutdown your computer or else it will run slower and not as efficient. There is no other way to fix this so start using it. If you want to make your computer load quicker, look at pcstats.com for guides on windows performance. They are very good and have easy instructions. 16. Paint This application is used by the majority of users. I have used it for things like resizing screenshots all the way to making UML documents that other programs just were not making correctly. It is very useful for simple image editing tasks and it loads much faster than photoshop (and it is free). 15. Windwos Aero This is a very nice feature if you have a computer that can run it. It makes navigating windows very easy and it looks amazing as well. If you use a mac, you know what I am talking about. Easy and beautiful navigation is something that many novice users like because they feel like it is more powerful and easier to use. Thats just the facts. 14. Active Desktop This is a feature that many people use without knowing it. It is used by outlook to display your calendar and tasks and can be used to out a webpage on your background. Many schools and libraries have this as their background so that they can display links and information on it like any other application. Once again you might not notice it but it is widely used. 11. Windows Explorer Um i think you were talking about the explore windows icon that comes up when you first install it. Windows Explorer is actually what you use to look at and find files on your computer like when you click My Computer it brings up a windows explorer window so i dont think this is useless? Everyone uses it cause unless you use the command line, there is no other way. 9. Windows Genuine Advantage Ok, as a user it might be a bit of a pain but when you loose billions of dollars in revenue because of pirated software, it is important to try and prevent it. When you purchase Microsoft Software you buy one license which means only one computer can use it at a time. Just because you purchased windows xp home edition does not mean you can install it on 3 pcs. Same thing goes for microsoft office. One cd = one licence = one installation. If you want to update it when you put it on another pc you will need to make sure that it is only on one and get a code to make it work. Its a evil necessity since people like to break the law. 8. End Task Um have you had a program hang or not close? Yes cause everyone has and you need this to end it. If you have issues getting it to open it means one of two things. Either you dont have a dual core or more chip since it will open almost instantaneously cause one core will do it for you or you have too many programs open / the hung one is used 100% of your cpu cycles and you just have to wait til a new thread can get time on it. Linux and Mac have the same thing except it is from the command line so its needed. Plus, you can use it to refresh windows properties that are changed in the registry without a reboot just by killing explorer.exe and creating a new process of it. 7. User Access Control This is for security control. If you have used linux you know you need to do the sudo command to access system files and such. This is the same thing except a box popups to ask you if you want to become an admin. Linux does that same thing for gui applications so its still there. Also, you can always put a flag on a shortcut to always run it as an admin or use a keyboard shortcut to do the same. Turn it off if you want but its for security and does not stop you from doing anything. Plus, if you have a pc that runs fast enough (good vista rating not a crappy one) then it just comes right up and doesnt slow you down at all. 6. Windows Update Do you want a secure pc? If so you need this. Linux and Macs have the same thing you just dont notice them as much. I like knowing when it is installing stuff or choosing when to let it install. It makes life much easier because if i am in the middle of a big project that needs CPU i can push the install off for a while. 5. Messenger Service All over the world this is used instead of aim so it has to be there. It is used all over asia and europe as the preferred instand messenger so it has to be there. 4. Notification First of all, if you dont like them turn them off. Secondly all OS's have them because people like to know what is going on. If I am connecting to a wireless network i want to know because you do not always want to. Turn it off if you dont like it but most people do. 3. IE 6 The whole world uses it so it has to be there. Firefox has issues too so dont even get me started. 2. Registry Try programming without it. Do you like having you browser history? that is where it is stored as well millions of other program specific properties and settings. Without it, you computer would not work and none of the settings you change would ever save. In linux these are your .conf files that all the programs create. This just puts it in a single easy to find place. You can change settings very easily in it so dont complain it is needed and is very useful for advanced users. 1. ActiveX Controls Due to patents you need to be asked to use them. Also for security reasons. To be honest, if you dont like them turn them off in your settings but that means no javascript, no flash, etc. These are all activex controls so what are you complaining about. These are what make web 2.0 web 2.0. You need them and use them a lot. Ok so here is my rebuttal for most of them. I am out of time and dont feel like writing more but look into what things are before you complain about them. Most things are used by millions of people so you might not want to say they are useless.
  16. Wow this is an amazing offer. I really need to get to 280 credits quickly because i really could use a domain name. Until last semester, I always had around 30 - 70 credits in my account because i had much more time to post and such. However, then i got really busy and lost most of my credits. I guess its time to really start posting and checking my account daily. :-)
  17. I tend to exercise very often. Currently since i am at home, i go for a 5k run followed by 4-6 sets of 100 yrd sprints. Then i do a .5 mile cool down. I do this just about every other day. The days in between I do 3 sets of pushups and 2 sets of 75 crunchs. However, once i got back to school next week i will go back to running a minimum of 6 miles 3 times a week with runs up to about 13 miles. The reason there is such a big distance difference is that at home my park has roughly half mile loops where as at school i can just run around the town, on paths, and through school so its easier to continue and zone out. Also, at school i will still do the situps and push up as well as some curls and hogen presses with the weights i have there.Besides these, i play roller hockey in an adult league once a week. I always feel sooo much better after working out because it just clears my mind and relieves my stress. I recommend everyone to do something active atleast 3 times a week because you will feel soooo much better afterwards mentally and physically.
  18. Circles exists for two reasons:1.) They are a conceptional idea for something that is round and connected in 2 dimensions. These obviously exisit because we see them everywhere everyday. However, how are they made and defined? This leads to reason 2.2.) Circles exist because an equation can be determine in in which for every x value of a circle defined by a radius r, there is a value for y. Since an equation exists, a circle does exist. Your point about there being an infinite number of points is so wrong because if you use that argument, a line doesnt even exist because a line contains an infinite number of points.
  19. If you want to develop a shooter game, look into the Quake 3 engine or i can give you some of my java code for a clone of it completely written by me and 6 other people as a semester project. It is not complete but we have lots of important concepts and new technologies built into it. If you need help with collision detection or physics, i am a pro at them now and they are almost completely separate from the graphical part. Since i have spent a semester writting a game, i will warn you that if you plaertn on writting if from scratch like we did, it will take you atleast a year of development by yourself to create anything good. We had 7 people and barely have a working product and it took us 4 months and 40,000 lines of code (production count only too). Before you even start writting a game start to plan out the models you are using for communicaiton between parts and how you plan on abstracting everything so that if one part changes, the whole game does not break. Feel free to PM me if you want some advice on it because when we started 4 months ago we knew it was a large project but about 2 months in you realize that it is about 40x larger than what you would ever expect because of all the small things one does not think about when you are conceptually creating a game. Also, i know DirectX and OpenGL and do research with both so if you need help with those let me know. Finally, just some last minute advice, plan first then code or else you will hit a point where you have to rewrite the whole game to get it to work because you will have no other way to fix communication issues, concurrency issues, and finally gameplay issues because too many parts will be changing your information to the point you have no way to determine where your errors are coming from.
  20. I really dont see an issue here. It could be just coincidence or as truefusion, maybe you just are giving them a reason to loose weight because they want to impress you. If anything, be proud that you might have that much of an effect on someone that they want to do anything possible to make you happier. That is never a bad thing and just dont worry about it. If you see signs of an illness then maybe confront them about it but otherwise, just be happy they want to be the best as possible for you.
  21. You should never have to do this hack if you install windows correctly. As in, you do a full system format with an install. You might get this if you do a repair install or an upgrade because it does not fully erase your registry, etc. This is why a clean install is always recommended. Not only will it increase performance of your computer because the registry is clean, but it also will fix tons of issues that your system has that you do not know about. This is also the reason why a clean install is recommended to be done every 6 months to a year. Even with a good registry cleaner, etc. it is still recommended you do this. I know it can be pain but if you do it a few times you get a system going. It takes me maybe 1 day of installing stuff to be fully back to my system if that long. Plus, most of that time is my computer doing work and not me.
  22. If you are going to run a web hosting company, you will need to know how to do all the things required for it. This includes building a safe and secure backend that runs all the hosting. Otherwise, many people will contact you with issues and you will have no clue how to fix them. Just start coding, asking for advice each part at a time, and testing the site after every single stage. Be sure to research how to write secure code because as a hoster, you will need to make sure accounts are not hacked and so forth. Giood luck
  23. I am a student too and i definitely would have to disagree with the statements about homework not being needed. You do not learn a thing without doing it yourself. Sitting in class can be boring and tedious and long and is important. You do obtain lots of information and learn a lot just by writing down notes or watching example problems. However, if you never put those things into practice, you would never know how to do any of it. For example, lets say you were in a math class and wrote down the example problems. How often when you try to do the homework do you have to look at the book for help or your notes or google in order to determine how to solve the problem? This is very often and thus means homework is important. Without it, you never would really understand the ideas being presented and how to use them.Another example is for a programming class. Most software takes more than 50 minutes to write and make it work. If you just wrote software in class instead of as homework, you never would learn anything. Most computer programming classes discuss techniques, algorithms, etc in class and then as homework you have to utilize them or implement them. This could not be done without homework. Also, most people tend to get into a grove when writing software. If I had to stop coding every 50 minutes, i would never get anywhere.Overall, homework is as important if not more important than attending class since it forces you to put into practice ideas learned in class and struggle through solving a system that is required.
  24. I now have a LG Chocolate (Version 2). I really like it because i really like how it is a slider. It is sooo much easier to answer the phone by just sliding it rather than folding it open. Also, because it is a slider, you can do a bunch of operations without actually opening the phone. You can just unlock it and read text messages, play music, etc. i really recommend it and the phone is quite durable.
  25. I took spanish when i was in high school. It just seemed to be the most relevant language since Latin is no longer used, French and German are only spoken in a few countries and then there is spanish. Since spanish is spoken in most of south america and is becoming more popular here in the US, i figured it would be the language I took. Those days really were not fond. Its not because of the langauge but because of the teachers and the actual curicullum. We just had to do stupid quizes and memorize tons of words and then just go through random exercises. It was not very hands on and thus one never really got excited about the class. I wish there had been more conversations and cultural awareness in the class because it would have made it much more fun and i most likely would have learned more.
