co.cc and .tk and some other free domains are considered as domains, not sure what you mean by actual domains. these free domains are not used by serious business or professional people. So we suggest here not to use it. Afterall it's your choice to use it or not. SEO wise these free domains are not helping out at all. Very less sites are crawled by search engines if these domains are used by bloggers or website owners. If possible get some good domain for yourself. if .com is not available then use atleast .info or .biz or .bz or .im etc for use, using .co.cc, or cjb.net has no advantage in terms of SEO but loss.

This is the point for which many people hate linux. And this is the point for which i'm not planning to use any such distro for full time. I prefer to install these linux based distros in virtual machine. It is more helpful that way as i can test to the full potential of that OS without any need for partitioning. Without internet, i don't see there is any market for Google Chrome. Let's see how far it goes. It's obvious that google chrome is not threat to MS or any other linux distro.

Well i personally find open source applications as alternative to costly applications. But finally, i must say developer get to pay his bills only if he writes commercial application. Open source may be succesful but not capable of managing economy. There are some good cases of people making money with open souorce and i have no problem with them. But i found that people once start to taste free things will give less respect to developers and people who are working to make it free. When there is money associated to something then people start to care for things. Open source doesn't have to be free but in many cases open source gives advantage to your competitors and that way it could hurt your long term business plan if you can't manage it strategically.

Thanks for posting your views. I have heard about horrible support and response from IPB as well. I have suggested vB to him,let's see what he chooses for his own site. I'll update this thread with whatever decision he chooses and will give update why he selected that. In between, he also want to know what Mods are essential for VB, if you know any essential Mods then please post here. So that i can pass it to him.

Ash, Well you are saying this as if there are no seeders or leechers in torrent or warez site from UK. Not only that UK ISP's are strict as well. Don't you think Sky & AAISP are strict ? Besides no matter how much strict ISP can be people find their ways out of it. No country has exceptions when it comes to legal things. China is more strict than any other country on this planet. They are torching blogger and site owners many times on what to disclose and what not on internet. Ask any chinese about freedom they get on internet. Compare that with UK either ways (from pirates view and from ethical view). I completely agree to this one.

By the way, just seen your first post again, you said you earned 2$MyCent, and how come you can buy domain with that ? I'm not sure if system allows that but even if it allows that i think it's better to earn 10$Mycent atleast before making purchase. And as far as hosting package is concerned, purchase Logic Plan 1GB HD-space/10GB BW. That will do for now. Logic plan costs 1.95$mycents and i think you should accumulate mycents more before purchasing that.

You need nameserver details for Xisto - Web Hosting ? here you go : ns.computinghost.com and ns2.computinghost.com, these two are the nameserver details that you need to enter into the domain registrars nameserver details. That will solve your problem. Operating system on server is linux that makes it linux server and that's what you call LAMP. And OS if windows then that makes Windows server and that's what you call it WAMP. LAMP or linux server is not that hard as you think. Google for "cpanel" and read some tutorial that is enough to learn about working on linux server provided here. Or if you have more mycents or money then you can have the windows server. But i suggest sticking with linux server as there is nothing hard to learn and performance wise and opensouorce apps support for linux server is good.

For most of the hosted domains i have google mail. I earlier used horde and squirrel mail for the Xisto mail. But later i got my own domains and that is why i have my own google hosted mail.

Thanks soviet rathe. Even i was somewhat biased to SMF and IPB earlier. But when i compared all these forum packages, also i got the info from this thread (especially from rvalkass) about VB, so i guess i'm going to suggest him about Vbulletin & Drupal. Current 4th version is new in VBulletin and it has some nice themes.Even default themes which is easily customizable and have some good free themes. It has CMS and news system as well. Quite expensive but it's perfect package that i can suggest him about.Can't say anything about nulled version as it might tempt him to use that and he might get account banned. As far as i know, he' got no idea about XAMPP. So going to suggest him directly about these choices.

I guess ipv6 is supported on win xp as well. Not sure i guess sp2/sp3 has support for it. Anyone can confirm this ? I heard ir from someone but was not sure about it. So have to confirm it.

Well new tags will be headache in some cases. But i was expecting some standard that can cut the monopoly of plugin like flash or silverlight. Let's hope HTML5+SVG can bring some magic in browser back.

Yes, i agree that forum traffic is harder to get than blog traffic. But his requirement is something like some membership/invite based community for his niche. So i guess he has his plans to build community like site. Even i'm unsure about how he is visualizing the site and activity around. I was considering to suggest free packages but due to lack of good themes/modules & update issues i didn't recommended SMF and cause of security issues didn't suggested PhpBB.Drupal was one package which can be used as blog/news. Only thing i left that was forum module. So forum module is very important. I'll give it try on local computer using XAMPP before suggesting it.

I have tried drupal for short time as CMS but never with forum modules. So have to check those out before i can comment. @BCD, i'll try FluxBB and suggest him about that. But are you sure it has news and blog modules with forum software ? That is important for him. And yes, i'll try Drupal before suggesting that.

Yeah i agree to that it is for beginners. But i was concerned more about security as many newbies here may use it without even upgrading and this might affect them. For me,after installing WP from fantastico i immediately install "Wordpress automatic upgrade plugin" and update my installation. .

Friend of mine is going to purchase paid forum script as he wants to build community around his blog. So he needs forums,blog and news system software. As no other free forum software was capable of delivering this efficiently so he found IPB and VBulletin software. Now i have no experience to suggest anything to him. And his criteria are like need of blog software/news system to be embedded with forum software. IPB costs 145$, and i want to know what are the essential add-ons that are needed with it. I mean there is MySQL driver, Conversion service. Vbulletin Publishing Suite: 285$. (This includes most of the add-ons that are needed to be purchased with IPB). So now which one is good and if you have purchased any of these before, what more you added to software(i mean add-ons etc).Which one out of these two is better deal as per the requirement i have posted. Any suggestions ?

BH, Most of the Wordpress installations in fantastico are dated and i think they are at 2.5.1. Can we have some way to updated version for them ? I mean those who install the software from the fantastico wil atleast get latest version of wp and will not be in risk of getting hacked as earlier versions of wp are hacked as far as i know.

I did tried the official explanation for this but it is not helping at all. I guess there is some sort of issue with certificate and with firefox it is also giving some trouble with logging in and out. I unable to log out of gmail yesterday. Maybe too much load on mail server.

Why not introduce groups with categories like :- Design- Programming- Creative (design+programming,poetry,story,blogging etc etc all be in here)Maybe number of posts in particular category forum then they should directly get into the particular group. Just my suggestion, not sure if other people will like it or not.

Well xisto offers it for sure. But my experience is that the installation for wordpress and forums is not supported as it gives messages for softaculous higher version required for the necessary steps. So yes, it is there in control panel but not usable as of now. I guess admins can look at this issue as softaculous offers upto date installation for the Wordpress and some other scripts. Scripts on fantastico are way too old on most of my cpanel and this could be security risk if not upgraded to recent version in time.So i hope they either upgrade installations in fantastico or allow softaclous updates.

And what about those interfaces which starts with some ad or sales pitch instead of personalized messages ? Even sales pitch could be hidden inside the personal welcome message. Like "welcome user" you are using basic plan of mobile, do you want to upgrade to professional plan ?,use this coupon code and get 95% discount. Act now". Alright i made generic message but there could be some services like that. How people respond to that ? Ignore it or hate the service ?
