Forum Upgrade To Version 2.2.1
michaelper22 replied to OpaQue's topic in Alerts, News & Announcements
I also didn't notice until now. I'm impressed by Xisto's dedication to its members and I hope they continue to provide service like this for a long time. Also, I like several new features in IP.Board 2.2.1, like the quick reply with formatting controls, as well as the new version of the Shoutbox. However, I am disappointed that IPS didn't improve the Topic Subscriptions management, which makes it reletively difficult to get rid of topic subscriptions. -
Which Is Faster Broadband, Dsl Or Cable
michaelper22 replied to football123213's topic in Science and Technology
II think ADSL is plenty fine if you need not that much speed, but in reality cable has the capacity to provide lots of speed. I know this is a seperate discussion, but fiber really has the potential (Verizon Fios is already popping up in a bunch of cities).I've heard that with DSL, you get your own share of bandwidth (albeit less of it), and with cable you share a large pool of bandwidth with your neighbors. Throughout my experiences, cable has always been faster. -
How To Make Firefox Faster If You Have A Broadband
michaelper22 replied to mukund's topic in The Internet
I took this for a spin in FF 1.5.0.9, and I think I noticed a small improvement. I will definitely do this with my PortableApps-based Firefox 2.0, because browsing from a USB drive isn't too fast (or at least not on dialup and without cache, as I experieneced).I knew about the about:config URL, and I knew that it has lots of secret tweaks, but you just uncovered another one for me. Thanks. -
Getting Free Cokes getting free cokes from coke machines
michaelper22 replied to fr0z3n's topic in General Discussion
The legality of this is questionable, but I know a way or two to hack some extra Coke out of a machine. Obviously I'm not going to mention it, but today someone in my school (I think) got six cans of Diet Coke and his money back from something like my method. Either way ti's stealing, and is morally wrong. -
I will take my sweet time waiting to upgrade. Main reasons:1. Need more RAM (I need more for XP anyway)2. No need for it (I like flash and fluff, but it's not strictly necessary)3. Lack of support (my dad probably hasn't seen it yet).

If you want power, get SMF. It has some features that comapre to IPB. But if you are looking for something relatively simple, then phpBB might be better. In SMf the profile area gives the user stats and tons of options, while in phpBB, you get just one page with mostly the smae stuff (meaning it has basically all of the profile fields, but no stats).

I like 1&1 for their prices, but the advanced settings for domains are purely owrthless. If you want to change your domain's MX entries, use cPanel to do that (Email -> Modify Mail Exchanger). I would be willing to experiment with the DNS stuff if I had 1&1 hosting, but until that happens (not likely, since OpaQue's computingHot is mighty fine), I'll leave everything as is.

This is a bit off-topic, but a free program you can use to find networks is NetStumbler, a utility highly-regarded by PC World for troubleshoting wireless netowrks. Basically it will give you a list of neworks, and after you select one, it will show you a self-updating graph of signal stats. If you can, try not to use other people's networks, just as a moral thing. Bad habits are usually contagious .

Audio Streaming How do I make it work for Firefox?
michaelper22 replied to darran's topic in Programming
Flash is now-Adobe's animation tool, and ASX is Microsoft's video streaming technology. Typically ASX is used for opening streaming media files quickly in Windows Media Player. -
Audio Streaming How do I make it work for Firefox?
michaelper22 replied to darran's topic in Programming
That method does work. I have seen that done many times. I may look into this a bit more for you; I'll probably try find a site that uses one or the other implementation of embedded objects. -
How Did You Chose Your Trap17 Forum Name?
michaelper22 replied to Hadi's topic in General Discussion
I went with michaelper22 since I use it just about everywhere, and not coming up with something new means one less thing to keep track of in life. Breakup of the name:-michael: my first name. People online also call me mike.-per: part of my last name (not revealing the rest for privacy)-22: day of my birthday. (Not revealing the month, same as above) -
Audio Streaming How do I make it work for Firefox?
michaelper22 replied to darran's topic in Programming
I don't know exactly how Firefox handles the <object> tag, but the basic idea is that Firefox won't render it. I am guessing that if you load a page that contains an <object>, then Firefox will just ignore it. The alternative to <object> for firefox is probably <embed>, whose usage I am not totally familiar with. -
IMO, Gmail is awesome at spam filtering. During the holidays, I was really getting hit by spam (meaning that spam was getting past the filter), but now it has subsided. Generally the amount of spam I recieve daily is under 5 messages, and when I do see spam in the inbox, all it takes to flag it is to check the box next to it and hit Report Spam.

I am really thankful to the Xisto staff for presenting me with my award of Conscious Voicer. I would also like to wish a hearty congratulations to the other awardees on their recongnitions. Truthfully, I haven't spent a ton of time around the forums recently (ever since moving on to paid hosting at Xisto - Web Hosting). One thing I don't understand is like this: if members help choose the awards, how could they help choose my award, when the post reports (which is what I'm suspecting got me my award) are not shared with members? However, I have been thanked before for reporting posts (by jlhaslip, I think), so obviously someone realized what I'm doing. Sorry to those whose posts I've reported, and as a result, recieved disciplinary action.

Invision Forums Member Number How to reset the member number ?
michaelper22 replied to Inspiron's topic in General Discussion
If you are using one of the freely hosted forums, they might not provide you with the SQL Toolbox (which I must say s pretty neat). Generally they won't give several other advanced features either. -
Audio Streaming How do I make it work for Firefox?
michaelper22 replied to darran's topic in Programming
The <object> tag works specifically in IE (and Netscape, which incudes and activeX plugin). The main reason it doesn't work in Firefox is because of the same reason Firefox is safer than IE: Firefox just doesn't support ActiveX controls, which are embedded in a document with the <object> tag. Notice from jlhaslip: Edit to remove duplicate data. -
Cpanel Fantastico Part 7 Of My 7 Part Tutorial
michaelper22 replied to Albus Dumbledore's topic in General Discussion
Because IPB and vBulletin are commercial products, and therefore can't be offered for installation via Fantastico. The only legal way to get them is to buy them from their developers (Invision Power Services and Jelsoft respectively). This question has been asked numerous times. -

Firefox 2 Whos has it and what do you think?
michaelper22 replied to BooZker's topic in The Internet
I will try Firefox 2.0 as soon as it's released as a PortableApp, since I don't have thge necessary administrator priveleges to install the real version. Version 1.5, with the Portable Firefox loader, loads in seconds on my P4 machine. My primary browser is Opera, but I use Firefox when sies don't render properly in Opera. -
Xdrive - Online Free 5gb Storage - Is Back!
michaelper22 replied to BuffaloHelp's topic in Websites and Web Designing
You can do that, as well as make backups, with the XDrive desktop client. The program has a nice feel to it, but doesn't do a whole lot (aside from hog memory). I would consider using the tool for backups, but my connection is way too slow. -
Free And Easy Ip Tracing This is amazing and free
michaelper22 replied to airwave's topic in Security issues & Exploits
Or maybe it's Verizon's disability to provide good service to older customers - that would explain why my browsing speeds are so lousy. That was a bit off-topic so don't start a discussion on it please. By the way, I also tried doing tracert on Google's server, as well as my Web site, and neither of those worked. -
Free And Easy Ip Tracing This is amazing and free
michaelper22 replied to airwave's topic in Security issues & Exploits
I can't figure out why, but tracert isn't working for me - here's what I'm getting: I hit Ctrl + C after the fourth ping to quit it since I knew it wasn't working anyways.
