  1. Google doesn't know the difference between content being stored in a DB or in a statci HTML file. As long as Googlebot recieves HTML, it's all the same. https://support.google.com/webmasters/
  2. It will work iwth WordPress considering that I think at one point it worked with my WordPress site. The method it uses to login to your blog is a standard XML-based protocol. You can use it for blogger and other blogging sites, as well as WordPress, Moveable Type, and others. However, I've had a bit of trouble using Semagic lately, so I would contact them if you have problems with it.
  3. Thanks for the lowdown on this. About the search funtionality, i have looked at the advanced member search form, and I didn't notice anything for searching Honorary Titles. Maybe it's an admin thing, but my limited experience with IPB administration is giving me a feeling that there is no such option. [Please merge with above post - bumping topic] As I've recently seen, there is a bit more to the spam patrol than the title in profiles, most notably, the little badge in the user info panel next to posts. Just to fuel my curiosity, how was that figured in to the skin?
  4. Your tutorials are very nice, but it's unfortunate that Fantastico is a very lame tool. It makes it very easy to try out scipts and stuff, but I question its updating abilities. It told me that an upgrade for Mambo is onlt for installations that don't have any thrid party extentions.
  5. No thanks, it's pretty OK the way it is. Who's idea was it to have that profile field? And why does any person who either mods here or repots posts have th title Spam patrol, while no other titles exist.
  6. There is a program called Semagic. It's open source. I don't really have much knowledge of it, so I can't help you use it. You can find it at http://semagic.sourceforge.net/index.html.
  7. Why do jokes like this have to exist? Perverting computers lie that might be funny, but it's still a bit sick. But I'm still gonna email this to my friends.
  8. I would agree that it shouldn't be done, but if you're going to use someone else's connection, at least don't use it excessively (ie. don't download movies - especially pirated ones - or other large amounts of data). But I was a little bit surprised when I read this: seems counter-intuitive, doesn't it? The title of this topic is a bit misleading: If I was stealing someone else's Wifi connection, that wouldn't necessarily mean using their Web connection. Just a thought.
  9. I took a look at my profile today, and noticed a small box (labled Additional Information) with a field called Honorary Title. although it's nice to see that I gained the title of Spam Patrol, who gave it to me, and who has control over the field?
  10. As far as I know, the order that Apache searches for index files goes like this: 1. index.html, 2. index.php. There is a directive you can place in the .htaccess file of the particular directory that will cause Apache to change the order to one you specify. Here is thee syntax: DirectoryIndex index.html index.phpThe example I provided will match the default ordering, but by either switching the order or changing the file names altogether, you can set it up to load the page of your choice. Reference: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/mod/mod_dir.html
  11. I'm not much of a designer, but I think your site looks very nice. one thing that I don't get is that the blog section is more like a Services page of sorts, not a blog. Also, why did you switch from Joomla? I've used both Wordpress and Joomla, and feel that both are good, but Joomla can do so much more!
  12. Thanks for the compliments. I did indeed tell my school, and my *new* principal likes it. But no, I'm not getting paid for this; it's all strictly volunteer. Visitors (who are supposed to be both prospective and current students and parents) can register by clicking the link under the login form. I used to have a nice banner, with a pic of the school in it, until I switched templates. I like the new template more.
  13. I should have posted about this earlier, but I slightly recently changed the template to something a bit neater (the old one had weird layout stuff). I think that this template is entirely CSS based (no tables!), and it has fewer images to slow down page loading (giving me room to add the random image module on the home page). Have a look through the gallery and comment on my picures if you like. For quick reference, the URL is http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  14. There's an open-source program called Scribus that's designed for newsletters and magazines, and the like. I didn't experiment with it much, but if you want to try it out, their web site is https://www.scribus.net/scribus-1-4-6-released/.
  15. I finally goyt around to installing it. My first impression: the interface is nice looking, but there are some drastic new changes. Dragging songs or double clicking an album name doesn't automatically add them to Now Playing. Usually doing that will add them to an untitled playlist. I'm still to figure out how to transfer playlists without transferring (or re-transferring) the songs it contains.
  16. Your server should also be fast enough to support the hosting of the forums and whatever else you're doing with it, in addition to your Net connection being able to keep up with the site.
  17. I should have mentioned that the site is very responsive. The simplistic design helps keep it loading quickly, which is a very important factor. From Google Hacks: I think we all agree on that one.
  18. Your tutorial is quite useful. The only problem was that I had to add the domin after my email user name. Other wise everything went flwlessly. People should make more tutorials like this one.
  19. I think your site is pretty nice looking. I am not such a big fan of dark backgrounds, but on your site it all works nicely. The header image is very sharp. I actually looked at the content of the site, and I like what you offer. If I ever need a good, custom-built computer, I'll keep you in mind.
  20. The problem with that lies directly in the permissions of the public_html folder. If you chmod it to 777, your script will work, but the directory may be open to hackers. The problem stems from the fact that the Web server isn't running as the same user as cPanel or the FTP server, and therefore the Web server can't write to a directory owned by cPanel. See http://forums.xisto.com/index.php?shoc=41614= for some quick info on permissions.
  21. The remote server (meaning not the one that the script runs on) you are trying to connect to might not allow remte hosts. If the remote server uses cPanel, and you have acess to cPanel, log in, go to the MySQL databases page, and scroll way down to Access Hosts. There, fill in the IP address of the server with the script, and click Add Access Host to save it. As an alternative, you can enter %.%.%.% to allow access from any server. If you can't access cPanel then contact the administrator of the remote server and ask him to help you out. Mention this post if you desire.
  22. I have a computer with several partitions, encompassing Linux, its swap, and Windows 98. Running a dual boot system (like in my setup) makes the most sense these days, so why bother with a live CD? I know that the PEBuilder thing can be used for making an installation disk, but I'm not sure if you can make a live CD with it. If you really want Windows on your machine, the simplist solution is to dual-boot (with a bunch of partitions).
  23. They are in the spam folder for a reason, and they don't use any of my alloted storage space .
  24. A while back I somehow stumbled upon some Google-run blog, where I saw a post about the quote unquote Google Browser. It looked interesting, so I downloaded it. After installing it, I found out that it was pretty much just a Windows version of the command line Lynx browser (any old timers here?) with a nice installer. It's interesting to browse with Lynx - no images, no JavaScript, no CSS, just straight out text and form elements. I could barely imagine using Lynx for my day-to-day browsing. Here's a screenshot of Gmail in Lynx:
  25. The Joomla project is actually a fork of Mambo, meaning some developers from Mambo said Bye Bye and borrowed the source code to make their own product (which is legally allowed under the GNU GPL). So if anything, Mambo and Joomla would constantly be competing for levels of security. And matak, don't worry about the Register Globals warning, I run Joomla and mambo with the same thing and I have no problems.
