  1. You can also rename the bin file to .iso and then you can even mount it with Nero.or just write it to a (re)writabele disk.
  2. Most of the recovery boot cd's have a partition tool on it. Most know are - ultimate boot cd, hires boot cd, ... On the Ultimate boot cd there are also some partition tools . But I think the best for You is make a backup on DVD of the last partitions. Erease the partitions and recreate them like you want. The place the data back from DVD. The ultimateboot CD have I only used to recover some data, never for the job you want to do. I have a spare hard disk for such jobs. Link to the boot disk : http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ Another tool for changing partitions is Acronis Disk Director but this one also not free , but has a trial version. What you can do with the trial version , I don't know. The best is always make a backup, because sometimes even with Partition Magic ther goes something wrong and you have lost everything on that drive or partition.
  3. The Cue file is only a part of the image the other part is in the .bin file. The cue file describes the content of the .bin file , so to play the move you need a least the .bin file. The cue file is rather small (a few kb), the bin file large (600 or 800 MB).
  4. The speed of the RAM depends mostly on the FSB of the processor.Since you processor is an AMD (AM2 socket) it works on 2000 Ghz (Hyper transport).Mostly those speeds are spread over 2 lats of memory, so the max speed could be 1000MHz.So it's better to use 800Mhz DDR2 ram , since the board is dual channel you have to use paired ram modulles. (mostly discreibed aks Dual channel Kit)About the brand I can't help you with that , (I mostly use Twinmos or Corsair). The supported brands are in the manual of the mainboard that you can download on their site.the brands in the manual will work certainly, other may work also but are not garantied by Asus.SATA drives are getting the standard these day for Hard drives. While the optimal media like DVD writer and so stay on the PATA connection. So if you are buying a new drive I should recommend you to buy a SATA drive. In my country the price is almost the same for the 2 types. For faster disk access you can always use a RAID config , but then you need more then 1 disk.
  5. What resolution did you setup in Windows ?Not all TFT screens can handle any resolution , look in the manual for the correct res.(800x600 or 1024 x 768 , ... )When you connect the projector (or a spare monitor) you can try several settings ...When you boot up in Safe mode the resulation will be 640x480 (the old VGA standard).
  6. Actually, nothing has changed since the old MSDOS time.A file exists in a linking of clusters (at the end of a cluster there is a link to the next cluster). When deleting a file (you erase the first letter of the filename and mark the cluster as free). The link to next clusters remains but they also marked as no longer in use.So if you didn't write anything on your hard drive on the place of the clusters you can undelete the file from your harddrive. If you want to delete files so you they can't be recoverd you have to wipe the entire free space on the disk (wipe = overwrite it with a dummy value), this can also be used for Memory cards of a Photo cam.Even a format doesn't delete everything on the disk , with some programs you can recover the information on the drive.
  7. If you look this link you see almost the same picture as you have : http://www.thinsoftinc.com/product_pc_sharing_betwin.aspx There is also a link for a 7 day trail version, so you can try if you have the hardware.
  8. The old version of Borland Pascal and Borland C are somewhere on the net.You can download them and use them leagal for free. But they don't support Windows XP , I think, so you can use them for making simpel programms that don't need much CPU power and run on Windows 9x on a PII computer.Sometimes people are asking for such things ....
  9. I'm running on 1280x1024 with 32 bit color on a 17" TFT monitor. When you start at that res. it's a bit tiny but after a while you get used to it.On A TFT you can set a higher resolution then on a CRT because the image is more stable.I'm using the same res. 1280x1024 on a 19" CRT, it's a bit bigger, but the the TFT is more stable. The refresh rate on my CRT is 85 Hz, on a TFT you don't see much difference (maybe if you are playing games ? ).
  10. Finally have found it on an other forum http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It was solved after running the program http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ First I did repair (takes some time). Then a format. And then after a few times plug-in and out the drive works back normal. Thanks for the help
  11. The drive is present there but it says 'no medium' present. (the same as an empty CD drive) I'm working on a dutch Windows , so the message may differ a bit. There is also no parttion persent on that drive.
  12. The problem is that it reports 'Removeable drive' like a floppy disk or DVD drive. And then it reports 'no media present'.I have 2 drives of the same type the other works fine.So there must be somthing wrong with the Master Boot record / boot record of FAT.
  13. No the drive is also not accesable by command prompt. It's reconised by the system , because I got a drive letter. But somehow, somewhere in the bootrecord it's defined as removeable drive. It has become in this status since I tried to make it a linux boot disk. But I have forgotten with witch program I did that.If I could make the drive accesable under Linux or Windows it would be great.
  14. Hi,I have a problem with my USB flash drive. When I insert it to my computer it gets detected and I get a drive letter for it.When I click the drive letter in Explorer it says 'Insert a medium in drive X:'I can't format it in Windows XP also.Does anyone know how to format this drive so I can use it again ?
  15. If you need a cheaper solution you can also make a serial connection by the serial port between the 2 computers. (if the distance is not that far). Here you have also 2 possibilities (you make a basic cable with 3 wires (send / transmit /ground) ).Or a full cable with more cables (like RTS , ... ).The max speed of this type of connection is 115 kbps. (this is the double speed of you dial up connection).Every old PC has a serial port so you don't have to invest in extra hardware.Just 2 serial connectors and some wires (or a made cable from the store).I think in the store you can also buy some USB crosscables to make a connection with USB.Any connection between the 2 computers will work if it's capable transporting IP pakkets.
  16. Try to install Everest (doownload at http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/everest_free_edition.html for the free version). Here you can view your settings of your computer components. Check the settings of CPU and memory. You can even do some speed tests of memory and CPU and compare them with other comps. Here you can see is something wrong, another possibility is that your hard drive with swap file is nearly full. So check your harddrive space.
  17. If you install linux most of the time there is also a bootloader installed like lilo or grub. With this kind of software you can make a choice between linux and Windows (XP).To remove the bootloader after you have removed linux, just use 'fdisk /mbr' since the bootloader is most of the time located in the master bootrecord of the first hard disk. You can also use a bootloader from a third party (like partiton magic , ... )
  18. I guess you are meaning a Dial-up connetion by phone. First of all have you 1 or 2 phone lines by you telephone provider. Each line access uses 2 wires (in Belgium white and blue (1st pair) and green and lila (2nd pair) ) So the following can be true : If you have 1 telephone line (PSTN) you can make only 1 connection to the outside. If you have 1 telephone line (ISDN) you can make 2 connections to the outside. If you have 2 telephone lines (PSTN) you can also make 2 connections to the outside. If you have only 1 line with 1 connection you can can get both computers online with ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). Then you have to get a network card in both computers and connect those 2 with a crossed UTP cable (sometimes even the telephone cable can be used / all 4 wires !!! ) You setup the PC with the Dial conenction as server and the other as client and it should work. You can even share the printer and some folders on both computers this way. If you don't like ICS, you also use 602 Lan suite (witch is free for 5 users).
  19. Have you more then one Sound card on your PC.For ex one on your mainboard and one in a PCI slot.An other possiblity is that your Soundcard on your mainboard is not correctly recognised by installing Windows XP.The you have installed Direct X (used for most games). And afterwards installed you Soundcard correctly, then you have forgotten to reinstall Direct X.So maybe it will work if you download Direct X from the microsoft site and install it again. Also take a look at the control pannel / system if your Soundcard is corretly installed.
  20. 'beTwin' looks nice software.Since there are (modern) CPU's with dual-core (2 CPU in one component).even the (older) Intel CPU's have the Hyperthreading feature with means you can split up 1 CPU in 2 parts. And the CPU spreads the CPU dynamic over the 2 parts. So most of the modern CPU's have enough CPU power for several users. So I think that the CPU is not the bloking factor. As long they don't do CPU intensive jobs at the same time like photo editing, movie edits , ...
  21. Another thing you can do is startup your computer from a boot-cd with a anti-virus prog built in.Most of the virusses get loaded in the start-up of your PC, with the Boot-cd they don't get started.Even if you have a anti-virus program on your PC , try to run a different one.Make sure the antivirus prog has up-to-date virsudefs. since the are new virusses every day.
  22. The older CPU's are easy to overclock , mostly there are no locks on the CPU.On almost all CPU you can overclock about 3 till 5 % without any problems if everything is correctly installed. Some mainbords even overclock automaticly when the computer is asking for more performance.I have such a mainboard with an AMD CPU.I haven't done any Extreme overclocking till now since I don't see the advantage of it.You have to pay a lot for decent cooling and even then you can blow up your CPU.
  23. I have some video cards in my system within that price categorie.Asus V9520 (nivedia chips) and an Asus A9550TD (ATI chips). Both are AGP 8x and have 128 MB video RAM are working fine but I have never played any games you specified with it.The only game I play Is Red Alert 2 and with that game I have no problems. In our stores (new) Videocards with less then 128MB are no longer available. These are cards are better then the videocard on board of the mainboard, because most of the time they use shared RAM.
  24. I have a Topcom router (WBR 254g) , it works fine for browsing. With Ptp programs (like bearshare, shareaza ) the router reboots every 20 - 25 mins. It's very hard to download something if it reboots every time, because the IP adress changes everytime. It think the CPU of the router can't handle the amount of small IP packets.Haven't tried any other routerbrand yet.I have also build a router with an old comp an IPCOP, this router has no problems
  25. Does you ever tried accesing your router with a web browser. most likely the adress will be http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ or http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (or another adress look in the manual). In the configuration site there is most of the time a logging, where you see the events. There you may find an answer for your problem. Note: When you power-off the router the logging is cleared, so try to reach it before powering off.
