  1. Thats the problem these days , drives are getting faster and have a higher spin speed (7200 or even more). This results in more heat production. In some brand cases everything is packed together leaving almost no room for cooling. When the drives are getting hot , they give some problems.
  2. When you flash your BIOS with a newer version , don't forget to load (setup) or (BIOS) defaults.Because some bytes may have another function in your newer BIOS version.
  3. There are 3 things you have to watch for :- Older drives don't use the 80 ribbon cables , you have to the 40 ribbon cables.- All the cables have to go to both connectors, if there are some broken. You have to place CS (cable select) on both drives i.s.o. master and slave.- The IDE interface speed selected in the BIOS could be to high for 1 of both drives.Fix the speed in your BIOS to the lowest speed.
  4. You can also but a new harddisk with the same size as your current drive. Copy the recovery console to the new one (with ghost or acronis drive image, ... ). Try to recover (reinstall) from your new harddrive. Then place the old drive as slave, and then you have your data back. An other option is write your recovery console on a bootable CD/DVD. Reboot from that CD/DVD and install the system. But here you have to watchout that you don't overwrite your data. A good bootCD for recovering some data are : Ultimate Boot CD (free) An other good tool is ERD Commander (http://www.bing.com/search?q=winternals&form=MSDTR1) but it's not free.
  5. If I use a download manager I use mostly 'free download manager'.I don't use it for every download, I use it only on very slow sites. If you have to download drivers from the site of asus , it's better that you use a download manager because it goes very slow, and sometimes even gets blocked. With a download manager you can download from several server at once ( ==> goes faster), and you can resume if needed.

    Citrix

Citrix is remote software , so you can work on an other machine remotely.Alternatives are :Windows Terminal server.Go-GlobalPC Anywere....What's the best I don't know, Go-global has a trial version for a month and it seems to work good on unix servers.
  7. If both computers are using Windows XP it's not that hard.Just try asharing a folder on both computers and it may work just like that.In explorer you should find the other computer by entering \\ followed by the ip adress. If it's not working there some things to you can check.
  8. Something like wipedisk should do the job. You have to make a DOS boot disk , reboot from it and just wipe. Everything will be gone, so watch out with it. Link to the program http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Otherwise jusst google met the argument 'wipedisk'.
  9. When you setup the router in bridged mode , there must be no DHCP configured in the router. The computers must get their IP adress from the Speedtouch. And I think you have to connect the Speedtouch to a LAN connection of the Router i.s.o. the WAN connection. I have never tried this before.
  10. It all depends where your computers are connected on.But you can setup you modem as router (like before), and setup your wireless router in bridged mode. This should work also.I don't have this problem since my DSL modem and wireless router are 1 device. Before this I had a Speedtouch Home (very old) and a wireless router. But the speedtouch home could only be used as modem , so my router had to use to modem to make a connection with pppoe.
  11. Partition magic does this job without problems, but don't forget to make a backup of your disk before starting. Some programs for that are 'Ghost' or 'Acronis Image'.You have to lead a small D-drive with the DLL for windows. Most likely the DLL files are not from windows itself but from some programs you have installed afterwards. So if you delete them you have to re?nstall those programs (without D-drive.) About the Swap space, most of the times 1,5 times your RAM is enough since you already have 1GB.Unless you want to do some video editing or some other programs that need a large amount of memory.
  12. I think you can setup your printer as 'off-line' in the print manager. When it's setup as 'off-line' you can delete the job in the queue.Works sometimes, otherwise you have to restart the computer but then all printjobs are gone.
  13. I 've had the same problem with a Medion memory stick of 128 MB last summer. found the solution on another forum http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ The problem was solved after downloading and runnig the program http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ First I did repair (takes some time). Then a format. And then after a few times plug-in and out the drive works back normal. The problem was raised when I tried to make my USB stick bootable.
  14. Yeah, Local computer shops works in most of the cases. They drop the complete (older) computer so they can sell a new one.In most of the cases only a few parts are broken.Where I live there are some events where you can buy some old parts as well.(But the price is not always low).
  15. Minimal configuration , it depends on your OS.The only thing that you need more is RAM memory. Each concurrent user is using some RAM memory, so you need at least 512Mb (for a low profile server). Most of the time the 2nd problem is your internet connection. But you can find servers with less memory (256 Mb) but then you have to patient to get your webpage. So I should say : try with the hardware that have , run some stats on it and see where you can improve.Note : A webserver runs better on a linux box , since it doesn't need a graphical interface.
  16. There are several for school : Net op School . Pc Duo But for this you have to install it on both computers (server and client). If you just want it on 2 computers you can also use vnc. This software is free and easy to install but has less features then the 2 programs above. Vnc is more remotely working on another PC. https://www.realvnc.com/
  17. If you are connection a router to another router , you have to configure the 2nd in bridge mode . Witch means you are just it as access point, if both have DHCP enabled in the same networksegment you may have some problems with getting an IP adres.
  18. If all your IDE ports on your computer are used. You can add an PCI card with IDE ports (SATA serial ATA or PATA the old IDE port). On this card you can again some drives. But you have to watch out for your power supply each drive consumes some power.
  19. It depends what OS he is using , with unix (or linux) you can do this job easy with shell scripting.Simply read the foldername and create the folder on the other disk. For Windows is that job a bit harder with a MS-DOS batch file you can create folders but reading the name from a external source maybe a problem.I should suggest you use Visual Basic (or VB script). There you can use the command DIR (to get the foldernames) and you can also create folders. If you give an example the script can be easly written , it will be a about 10 or 20 lines. You can start the VB script with Internet Explorer (if you haven't disabled this).
  20. Can't you go back to one of the latest 'restore points' You can find this option in the menu 'help and support'.There you select 'Undo changes to your computer with System Restore'Normally when you go back a few days , all changes to the registry are restored. If you have installed some programms and /or hardware it will be removed also.So take some of the last restore points so you loose as less as possible.
  21. AM2 is the socket , the pin layout of the CPU.Even the FX is available in the AM2 socket So in the AM2 socket you have :Cheap CPU 'AMD 2800+ 64bit Sempron Boxed AM2'Medium 'AMD 3500+ 64bit Athlon Boxed AM2'Dual Core 'AMD 4200+ X2 64bit Dual-core Processor Boxed AM2'and some extreme AMD Athlon 64 FX62 2.8GHZ PIB AM2 2MB CACHE For a graphics card I can't give you advice since I'm only playing 1 game 'Red Alert 2' witch is already a some years old.Certainly don't use a graphics card witch is on your mainboard. For real high-end graphics you can use SLI (but the price is high since you need 2 (identical) graphics cards). If you are playing old games , must of the current video-cards will be good. But for the recent (certainly shoot and kill games) you need a good video card. Also here you have to watch out because the high end video-cards need a decent Power Supply and a good airflow in your case.So building a basic computer is easy, but for a high-end you have to watch out for good-cooling.Since you are living nearly on the other side of the planet , it's hard to tell what's best for you.
  22. I think it was the command LOADThe computer answer with 'Press PLAY to continue' When the game is loaded you have to give the command RUN(thats what I remember from the old days).B.t.w. There are commodore 64 emulators on the net , even with games and so.So if you need games you can try these images, you just need a connection between your PC and C64.
  23. I think he meant 'Dual Core' processor, since all (recent) CPU's are 64 bit these days. The (recent) Intel Core 2 processor give good results in the tests these days. The older Pentium D 9xx processor is also not that bad.In the AMD brand there also some good CPU's.All the new CPU's of AMD are now using the AM2 socket witch is newer then the 939 (athlon) and 745 (semptron). In my country the AM2 CPU's are cheaper then the older sockets, and the older sockets are hard to get.So if you buy an AMD you choose best and AM2 socket. If you buy new hard disks certainly choose SATA (smaller cables and more easy to connect). The old IDE drives can still be connected on the current mainboards. In a upgrade you have also to watch out for your power supply. It should be at least 300W and have a 4 pins power connector. The ATX connector has also been changed from 20 pin to 24 pin. There exist mainboards that supports both or there exist a conversion adapter. All the depends on the hardware that you don't replace in your case.
  24. No Ghost is not free software.Since Ghost id a product of Symantec there is no trial version also.So you have to buy it , if you want to use it.With Acronis there exists a 'Personal version' witch is sometimes free provided with a computer magazine. There is also a trial version.
  25. The job of installing the web server (apache) + Php and Mysql and some extra tools can be done with xampp This work for linux and windows and can be (free) downloaded at their site https://www.apachefriends.org/index.html Setting up the router can be found at the site https://portforward.com/ And the ports you have to forward depends on the service you want to serve. port 80 for http:// and port 443 for https:// Watchout some ISP's block everything below port 1000. The you can do a port translation in your router or just move the server to another port. When you want to reach the server you have also to mention the new port because teh default is 80. ex http:// [˙our alias].homeip.net:[new port] / The next option is checking your firewall that it doesn't block the incoming requests. A big disadvantage is that your PC must be powered on most of the time, otherwise no one can reach your site. You are using bandwith on your internet connection. If you have many visitors you need upload speed (witch is most of the times rather low).
