1. Defragmenting is usefull when you are resizing the partition after the current. An other option is moveing all the data to the 1st parttion and 3rd parttion (if possible)Delete the 2nd partition.Resize the 1st partition and the create a new 2nd partition. It works faster and is a bit more secure, because the program parttion manager doesn't have to move some data. But also here make a good backup before starting the operations (if possible with Ghost or Acronis True Image Home). An alternative for Partition Magic is Acronis Disk director. Both Acronis products have a trial version you can donwload it from their site.

Slow Booting

Is it possible that there are USB devices connected with drive space (like your moble phone). Then if the BIOS is setup for booting for USB devices , it will look at all devices for booting up.(may take a while).Look at the boot sequence in your BIOS (the fastest is placing your hard drive first, then CD/DVD/ ROM)If you are using live distibutions of linux on CD/DVD , you have to place the CD/DVD before the hard drive.Mostly the rest I leave just blank, I just fill it in the BIOS when I need it.Another solution for yout problem is don't connect any unneeded USB devices on your computer.or disable booting from USB devices (maybe a bios update is needed for that). Also watchout with charging from USB , it takes some power from the USB port, this power is limited. If you take too much power from the USB ports the computer may getting unstable.Solution for this is using an USB with external power supply. So I think you should better charge your mobile phone the nomal way.
3. The new Intel Core processor is there already for a while. You can buy this CPU is you are self-building your PC.But if the brand computers are already using this CPU I don't know.I never buy Brand computers. It's a fast CPU on a lower clock then the D-core, it's also using less power and produces less heat. The new CPU is even tested faster then the current AMD CPU's.So for the now the Intel CPU are faster then AMD , this has been different for a long time.
4. It's adjustable with 'Partition Magic' (always sure to use a version 8 or later).I shouldn't risk it with a trial version (because if something goes wrong you loose everything on the disk). An other option is mapping the other partitions to 'folders' in your C-Drive.Or move the location of your 'Documents and settings' map. This can be done in Windows XP and give you more safety when the system crashes.Another big file file probally on your C-drive is the swapfile, this file can be move to the E-partition.Use a fixed size , so it don't get fragmented (the size depends on your RAM size).Normally is the rule 1,5 times your RAM size, but if you have 1G or more you don't need that size.Or you can add an extra hard drive, use ghost (or something like ghost) to copy the C drive to your new disk. And use your old disk for data.
5. If the link quality is low on 54 Mbps , you can always fix the speed on 11 Mbps.(The link speed can set on your computer).Or try another channel (some channels may have less problems).
6. It's not easy to give help with such a fault description. But to be sure that you are connected to the right router :- Connect a PC with a LAN cable to router.- Change the Broadcast SSID to something unique like router_06- change the channel to something unique (I think the default for most routers is channel 6)- Remove the LAN cable.- connect a PC wireless- Search ou SSID (and channel) in the list set this connection as default.- Now you are sure that you are connected to your own router. If possible protect your router with MAC adress list. And an encryption protocol (so others can't use your router).
7. Have you changed anything to firewalls (Windows firewall or an other).Otherwise try to disable them and then try again to connect. If the connection works it must be some firewall settings.
8. At school whe had an other model (Tandy Trs-80) http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ An old model with a single side 5 1/4" floppy drive. It was only programmable in Basic. At home I had a Commodore 64 with a tape drive as storage device. You had to connect the computer to a TV-set.
9. I have tested the following and it works : Webserver (in local lan using XAMPP). Database (on free server http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) The line in the drupal config becomes : $db_url = 'mysql://login:password@http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/;; Note the Italic has to be filled in with your specs. The number :3306 is port on the server that's listening for database access. (you need to specify this when it's not the default port).
10. Have you protected your router with a MAC table ? It sounds like your (new) portable doesn't get an ip adress. You can always check this giving the (new) portable a fixed adress in the range of the router. And try to reach the config page of the router. If you want very fast traferts local you can buy a Gigabit Ethernet Switch. Connect one port to the router (will be connected at 100 Mbit or 10 Mbit). All the other computers will connect at 1 Gb if your card supports it. Then you can transfert till 1 Gb between the PC's (Note : 1 Gb Electrical (UTP) is always half duplex). If you just leave it at 100 Mbit , you can always remove the bandwidth reservation witch is default setup in Windows XP.
11. Those drives are not that old , Quantum (later became Maxtor),Made a while such drives because they were faster then the 3 1/2 drives. But they are making more noise, take more place in the case , .... Later the speed of the drives went higher because teh rotation speed went to 7200.With a 5 1/4 inch drive 7200 drives doesn't exist , probaly mechanical problems to make them.Compaq used to place those drives in the P3 computers.
12. I don't think this will ever work, because the USB interface and the ethernet interface are both used to go on internet through the coaxial cable (thats also the job of the modem). I think the modem is not made for using the USB and the ethernet interface at the same time. The 2nd problem is that you don't have access to the software in the modem (most of the time). If you want to make such a connection the best you can buy is an adapter from USB to Ethernet. They are not that expensive. Her you haven an example of such device http://www.dlink.com/uk/en For other devices just google and you find some. But what's configuration of your internet connection ? Are you using a Wireless router ?
13. Never tried it before on a other location.I'm running drupal on a local server (lampp), and the database and the webserver are on the same computer.Note: You have to make a database and (database)user on the server before you can start. Then you have to make the tables with the SQL provided with the instalation. With my configuration it worked in a few minutes.I'll try to move the database to another computer in my (small) LAN and I'll see what happens.
14. Do you have a database on that other server ?And the server with the database have to support requests from the outside. Its easy to have the hosting and the database on the same server, then you have no problems.
15. The question is what are the system requirements.Maybe you need a Dual Core CPU with 2G RAM , and a big video card. While Red Alert 2 runs almost on any computer with 256MB RAM.(Red Alert 1 could even be played with 80486.)Ofcourse the graphics of Red Alert 1 were very low.
16. The reason the computer can't clean up the virus is that it maybe loaded at startup. So you do the following :- Check in the AVG control pannel to clean up the quarantaine folder. If that doesn't work:- Start your PC in safe mode , and then try to run AVG in safe mode maybe then it will clean it up.- Otherwise use explorer go to the quarantaine folder on your PC and move the files to a temp directory.Try to reboot your PC and if there are no faults delete the files you placed in the temp directory.Use (shift) (delete) to delete then so that they don't get stored in the 'Recycled.bin'
17. For safety on a system the best you can get is a RAID configuration (RAID 0+1 for ex.)For virusses is this kind protection useless, because all the drive get infected. So the only solution for virusses is using an external device. The disadvantage of CD RW and/or DVD RW is that after you have written then a few times, some places may get write faults on it.So after the backup you should check with the original. All this takes a lot of time, so most of the time I only make a backup of my data. It's not that much , but if you loose it somehow .....And if you are using every week another CD or DVD (even a CD-R with multi-session could work).I know it's a lot faster if you have a file-server in your network or a NAS.But you have also to watch out for virusses on these devices.
18. DVD ROMS won't be a problem they can be read by any player. In the beginning for the recording of DVD the worked on it with 2 brands. One brand develloped DVD - and the other DVD +Mostly the system can read both standards.Writing you have 2 kinds : the one that write also both standards (then is the DVD+R and DVD+RW the fastest). or you can only write 1 DVD-R or DVD+R (or even DVD-RAM).In Europe msot of the DVD recorders can work with DVD+R (or have support for both).DVD-RAM is rarely used. Some recorders van even write the newer DL (dual layer) disks. But these disks are rather expensive (more expensive then 2 single layer disks).
19. I use also use a DVD recorder with build in hard drive of 80GB.I know it's not a recent model, but you can buy them for a good price. They are also comsuming less power then a computer, and are easy to program. You can record on your harddrive for more then 20h (even 37h in a medium quality better then VHS).Afterwards you can even edit the advertisement out if you want and then write the result to a DVD (+R +RW ... ).If you want more compression like DIVx and so , you can import the DVD on your computer.compress it and then store it again on a CD or DVD.The HD recorder can even play DIVx in most of the cases.
20. My hard drive is split in 3 partitions :1 for the system files and programs : backup with ghost (every few months).1 for data and downloads : backup on DVD RW (or external hard drive)1 for the swap file : no backupThis works in most of the cases. But Acronis is getting better then ghost , so in the future I might use Acronis.
21. Is your power supply still good ? Because even when the PC has no RAM on board the harddrive must be spinning. Another option is use only 1 piece of RAM (DDR 333) on your mainboard in one of the slots. Try starting your computer and then do a bios upgrade. After the BIOS upgrade most likely the RAM will work , but in the BIOS you can block the speed to DDR333. I found one remark for your mainboard on a dutch site : I think the last remark is importand for you if you use the 3rd slot , you have 2 banks that use the same interface , so that bank could be damaged on your mainboard. Most of the times only that part will be damaged.
22. Mostlikely you CD will be not bootable. The best thing you can is booting from a floppy drive (if available). You can make some floppy disks with the Windows XP setup disk. you can download these from Microsoft Otherwise you have to get another CD/DVD for setting up windows XP. Is your laptop not deliverd with a recovery disk. Setting up with that disk is better because it contains all the drivers for your laptop. (like your video card , .... ). The best is always using the recovery disk. Sometimes the recovery files are placed on your harddisk when you buy it , and in the manual you can find out how you can store them on a CD/DVD. So watch out when you format your drive .
23. Now they even start with digital television in our region. You can capture DVB-T from air and DVB-S from satelite (Astra). In our country DVB-T if for free but only 3 stations are on it. For DVB-S you need a decoder card or a special satelite decoder. On most of the decoders you can record on a hard disk, but there is no writing device for moving it to CD/DVD. So if you only rarely capture some programs the best will be a TV card in your PC. There are 2 types : with and without hardware MPEG compression. (If you have a slow PC you better take a card with hardware compression). If you want to record more programs at the same time , you need a TV card for each channel. (there exist also cards with 2 tuners). For software you can choose Windows Media Center Edition. Or on your existing windows Mediaportal (on this site you can also find the supported hardware).

Need Free Ftp Client

I use mostly ftp commander (free version) http://www.internet-soft.com/ftpcomm.htm It works for most of the job I have to do with ftp. Another option for just upload a few files is using the ftp from the command prompt (windows or linux). Once you know the command set it works also. The basic commands are : bin (switch over to binary mode)asc (switch over to ascii mode)put [filename] (upload a file)get [filename] (download a file.) Most of the commands can be read when you give the command help. Basic tool but available on any computer with an operating system (if it's not disabled)

Connection Problems

About the dial-up : do you mean dial-up by phone or by xdsl. For xdsl you have 2 main types pppoA (point to point protocol over ATM) and pppoE (point to point prot over Ethernet) the setting depends on your provider.(not for pppoA you have to give up a VP and VC also). For the wireless how much diistance is there between the accespoint and the receiver. Not all recievers are working even good. When a place a HP desktop in a range of about 8m (with 1 wall in between) I got a stronger signal then with a USB key. And the difference was big.If your connection is low you can boost it a bit up with an extra antenna.Placing the wireless card fixed to the B standar (11 Mbps) you may have a more reliable connection when your signal is low.
