  1. Another hint is use some different passwords :Like the password for POP mail is sent over the network in plain text , so this one is easy to decode. You may use a strong password but if you are using everywhere the same, once you get one you get them all.And so you can make it so hard that you even can't remember your own passwords. There are even freeware programs to store all your passwords in 1 application.
  2. Another programm is hitman pro, but afterwards some things doesn't work anymore. Like games with MSN messenger, to repair this you have to remove hitman pro from your computer. You can download it from : https://www.hitmanpro.com/en-us.aspx The site is written in dutch but since a few version the programs are setup in English. It's easy to run and it cleanup a lot of spyware. It runs several programs after eachother and it configures the programs also. Works good.
  3. I always use wired connections for gaming. They are faster because they dont have to be encryted / decrypted.Another advantage of the wired connection is that the speed is more constant (10M or 100M or 1000M).In most of the cases even 10M wired is faster then a 54M wireless. When you are using ADSL the speed of internet is most of the cases 4M Download / 512 k Upload. So 10M is more then enough unless your are having a (small) LAN partySo if you can go wired.Otherwise try turn of the encryption and your connection will be faster but less secure. These day the wireless connections go to 108 Mbit/s and even faster, but for gaming is the speed no that important only the delay (visible with the ping). For tests on delay you can always use a ping from a DOS window.
  4. I use often Knoppix from (live-CD / DVD), but i'm still searching a distribution for installation on my hard drive. Since they work with older hardware as well I'll try it with an older Comp. For making a firewall/router I've used IPCOP (small and works fine). With knoppix I'm using the KDESo I'm seaching for a distribution were I can select the KDE desktop.Maybe I'll try Kubuntu.
  5. The problem is that you are getting chars from the file.The datatype char uses only 7 bits from the 8 (the MSB is used as sign bit).You can solve your problem by geeting integer values with the commands fscanf() and fprintf().fscanf(FROM,"%d", a);fprintf(TO, "%d", a);
  6. With water in it will not work.Because the water will split in ions due to electrical current. So those water ions will become a conductor wich will result in a useless mainbord. With oil it seems to work, since oil can't split in ions. The rest is easy to explain :When the oil heats up, it becomes lighter so I goes to the top.The cooler oil is heavier so it goes down. When the oil is on top it comes in contact with the normal air so it gives its heat off to the air just above.Another advantage of this is that all component are cooled.Like memory modulles , the mainbord chipset , Video card and so on.A disadvantage is that a leak can kill everything and it's not easy to make a memory upgrade. The only question how much oil do you need to cool a system properly, and how long does such things work.I've never tried it, and possibly will never do it also.I keep it on air cooling , it's the cheapest and most used.
  7. An other solution is plce the complete PC in Oil without FANS. At least some one has done it before : http://www.tomshardware.com/articles/ I don't know if that works, after while you warm-up something in it I think.
  8. You always make a router yourself with freesco. You only need on old computer like a 386 , 486 or P1 (or higher). Build a modem in that computer and 1 network card connected to a switch (or hub). And your network is build. The router can do an automatic dial-up when somebody asks an internet page. After a defined time out the connections automatic disconnects. When you later have a broadband connection you can reuse the router, but it requeres at least a P1 200 then. more info can be fount on the site http://www.freesco.org/ I have seen aslo routers that have a ISDN dialup connection , but with PSTN I haven't seen it yet.
  9. I have also both.Intel P4 530 (3.0 GHz)Amd Athlon 64 2800+ and Amd Semptron 2800+ (both socket 754)Amd has the advantage to be cheaper and comsuming less power.Intel looks more stable in performance.Next to the processor is also the chipset on tha mainboard important for the speed of the computer.
  10. Hi,Does any one know a programm or add-on for collecting e-mail on a pfSense router. The pakket is based on freeBSD 6.1.I just want the router to collect all the mail from the POP3 mailboxes.Do a spamfiltering So that the client PC can get the mail from the router. It's actualy the first time I'm using freeBSD , before I always used a router pakket based on linux.Like IPCOP, pfsense seems to run fine on my old P2 at 300 MHz.
  11. I think the command for chown is :chown [user] [group] [files or directory]You can do a 'ls -l'the you do a ls -l > dummyNow you see the owner and the group and you can change it to that.Dont forget changing the directory. If you do a chmod 777 every file can be changed/executed by everyone, this normal works always but is not really safe to do.In the chmod you also work with : chmod u+x (give execute rights for the user) chmod u+r (give readrights ....)the best is change the file to the user you need and clear the rights for everyone else.
  12. I had the same problem.I opened the drive and cleaned the laser lens.Without any result, I think after a while the laser become useless. The only thing you can do is replaceing the drive with a (newer and faster) model.Or you can even replace it by a DVD writer or if you have a bit of time Blue laser drive.
  13. For solving some problems with parttion tables and so on. Or just checking your have drive after you have saved your files you need , you could use http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ This bootable disk has many tools for solving problems, most of the tools on the disk are freeware.
  14. Most printers has a park position for the heads when it's not in use.In the park position is a kind of protection to prevent the cartdrige from drying out. This protection works if the printer is used on regular bassis (daily or weekly).Other wise you can take the cartdrige out and clean with cleaning fluid. When you buy refill ink there is most of the time cleaning fluid sold also. This works also on original cartdriges.
  15. Well I studied electronics at school (about 15 years ago). The problem is that I don't find any circuit diagrams for that power supply.Maybe I just open it and check the solder points. There are no parts black and smelling (that's already a good point). If I can't repair it , I can always reuse the fan, they are easy to remove.
  16. I'm using an old computer as router, webserver.I have installed it with IPCOP and XAMP.It's not always up, I just use it as router and for testing website development. The hardware is a P2 / 300 MHz with 192 MB RAM , the harddisk is 4 GB.seems pretty old but it seems to work, for the webserver is it a bit slow certainly if there are serveral visitors at the same time. For a better webserver you need 256 MB or more.
  17. Has anyone some ever repaired a (partly) defective power supply of a PC.Mine seems to delever some voltages because the fans are stil working (most likely 12V).But some are missing because the PC won't start up.I heard that most of the times only 1 or 2 components are defective (like the switching transisor or some diodes).I know the cost is a new opne is rather low, but these days It happens more and more that the power supply is unstable or faulty.
  18. There is also an issue about the Windows Account.- Mostly when you active the "Guest" account on the windows XP Pro, it works also.- And then you have to share one folder on each computer.(you can remove the share later if you want to).- Firewalls can also block the sahre. In Zonealarm you can define a safe zone by IP adress (for ex 192.168.1.1/24 is trusted area). In a trusted area you can share folders in the others not.The windows firewall has also a setting this.An other protocol used in shares is Netbios (TCP port 137 and 138).
  19. Another possibilty is that the drive is not correct reconised in the BIOS. There are tricks to reduce the amount of cylinders below 1024 (called LBA). It's all hard to say withour further information about Mainbord and Operating System. A tool to detect most of your hardware is Everest (from lavalys). they stopped support on their free version but you can still download it at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ With this program you can most of the information you need. Otherwise unplug all harddrives, place the new one. Install your PC from CD (or DVD). And the place the old one as Slave. Your computer will work a lot faster, but you have work for days to install (and setup) all needed programs.
  20. Coolermaster is not a shop , it's a brand. Another Brand with has this produkt is http://de.sharkoon.com/ The problem is that all the shops I know are from Belgium (West-Europe). Mostly I don't buy anything online. Why don't you try google (there must be a shop in your country) other wise try yo find a shop in the U.S.A. The lamps are worldwide used for some years, so they must safe if you place them correctly. They may not be loose in your case.
  21. I use 2 firewalls : The build in firewall in the NAT router (works good for incoming messages not for outgoing). And on every conneted PC I use ZoneAlarm (free version) also .Till now no problems detected.
  22. Looks strage normal is the download higher (or at least equal) then the upload speed. I guess the the 10Mb is the speed of your ethernet interface. In Belgium the Speed is limited to 9 Mbit/s You can losse a lot of speed when you are using a wrong MTU (Maximun transmission Unit) With ADSL is this 1492 Byte , while the ethernet default is 1500 Byte. So each pakket will be send in 2 pieces , with 2 headers, ... You can change your MTU and so with TCP optimizer http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php In the window there is a site you can ping to determine the highest MTU you could use. Ping to https://www.google.de/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=BwkjVKfAD8uH8QfckIGgCQ&gws_rd=ssl and look when the pakkets gets fragmented. Then you have some rules the recalculate the speed to KB/s You have also the differce between bits/s and Byte/s (this is a factor 8) and then you have 1 MB = 1024KB So 10 Mbit/s = 1,25 MB/s = 1280 KB/s
  23. Led's are easy to connect but they don't work at 5V or 12V (more like 1,5 V). So you have to place them in serie with a resistor. You have to calculate the resistor so that the LED's have the current they need (depending on the specs of the LED). An other (easier) solution is using a cold cathode lamp, they can be connected directly. See the link hereunder. http://www.coolermaster.com/index.php?LT=eUR+Aurora%20Red
  24. There is no need for portforwarding since an ADSL modem is a Point to Point connection. 1 PC (or router) connected to the modem. If you have a public adress then the adress on the site https://www.whatismyip.com/ is the same as your computer, then you don't need portforwarding. The only blocking point can be a firewall installed on your PC.
  25. Check your DHCP settings on your ethernet card.Since you are connecting with a HUB (or switch).Telenet has to open 2 IP adresses for your Cable modem, if not only one computer gets to the internet.A possible solution for this problem is a Router.
