  1. Does any one has a quick guide for starting a site with joomla (or an other CMS) ?
  2. The last is the best : Thats the reason why computers are getting slow (even the new ones), but no one seems to do somthing about it. If you are installing programs on it, and afterwards removeing it. and so on. The registry file gets bigger and bigger (but when you remove a program it stays big). At startup the complete registry file gets load loaded so your startup goes slower and slower. Nothing better then reinstall your windows from time to time, and then install only the programs that you need. But my advice for 128MB is buy some memory upgrade if possible , for windows XP I should suggest at least 256MB (better even 512MB) Another tool to help for a faster startup is bootvis ( a tool provided by microsoft), I have never used it but some people are saying it helps.
  3. I think they have something with a ISDN device, are you using an ISDN dialup to get to the internet ?Another possibility is that you have installed 'Windows Live messeger' and placed some debugging file on.Normally CAPI has something to do with voice connections (ISDN or VOIP).
  4. You can try Media portal (open source ) but it runs under windows as well. So you still need a windows version (home , pro or Media center it doens't mater). You can find more information on their site https://sourceforge.net/projects/mediaportal/ I have never tried it yet, since I have now Digital TV over DSL . Maybe I try this with a satelite dish (but I haven't one now). The software can work with multiple tuners and several cards are supported.
  5. Are they given by the commandline ? check the variables argv and argc
  6. I don't know where you live, but in most country's the line identification is a featuer where you have to pay for it, unless you have a ISDN line.I think the simplest to solve your problem is buy a device that you place on your line that display the ponenumber they are not that expensice and your computer doens't need to be online all day.On an PSTN line the linenumber identification is send between the first and second ring. It's send in PSK , if your modem doesn't support it, it will not work. The normal numers are send in DTMF (dual tone multifrequent) so thats an other method.Call waiting is a total different feature that the line is shortly interupted when someone is trying to call your line. (this feature is not nice when you are connected with your modem to the internet , because most of the time your connectection will be lost when this happens).

    Booting Problem

You also rewrite your master boot record (MBR) maybe you got an virus in it.The only way to rewrite it is using 'fdisk /mbr' from a command prompt.I got it once the MBR was infected with an old virus, and afterwards it wat no possible to install a more recent windows version. The virus let the computer hang.Normaly rewriting your mbr doesn't harm anything unless your have a dual boot with linux or a another bootmanager installed.
  8. I think that's the fun of using windows XP , if your computer runs a few years without reinstalling.I becomes so slow that nearly everyone buys a new computer. While it's just Windows XP that get large log files , swap files, registry files , so it's getting slow.Mostly I make an image of the fresh installed computer. And after a year (or when I've got some performance problems) I place the image back.

    Hardware Failure?

Did you do a BIOS upgrade ? This is only needed when you have placed new hardware or have compatibility problems. Then have to load the deafults for sure. Anyway when you load the bios setup defaults on your BIOS, and afterwards check the CPU speed and RAM speed. The you go to the startup sequnce, you place the Hard drive first (maybe you have to select wicth hard drive first depending on your mainboard). 2 nd place you can place the floppy drive, CD ROM , ... You can also place the CD/DVD ROM first but then if you leave a bootable CD / DVD ROM it boots from it. Another option you can do is checking the master boot record on the hard drive. When you have installed linux or another OS before in the master boot record there is a bootloader. To remove this you have to startup from a windows boot floppy. Go to the command prompt en enter : fdisk /mbr And also run check fdisk and check if the correct parttion is made active. Checking the above can also be done when you download the 'ultimate bood CD' and startup from this CD. You can download it at http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ Most of the tools are from the good old MSDOS time (or linux based). It's old fashened but it works for sure. You chekc most of it with 'Ranish Parttion manager' : The active parttion is marked, and the Master boot record is visible in the bottom. When you need help to change anything you alsways give a message in the forum. Don't change anything you don't know , because with those tools you can remove all the content of your harddrive in seconds. Can you also mention which mainboard you have ?
  10. I use Mcafee antivirus (my boss pays for it).For firewall I use Zonealarm (free version), works fine (but not the last version).
  11. Upgrading an old computer is not that easy since it uses memory modulles like SDRAM.They are hard to find and if you have found them sometimes the mainboard doesn't accept them. For the basic stuff your computer is sufficient , maybe changing the graph card will be a needed upgrade.A graphcard of 64 MB is not very recent, but here you have also some types of interfaces.PCI or AGP 4x and AGP 8x , the newer card are now PCI -express with your mainboard doesn't support. So before buying something to upgrade download the manual of your mainboard and look out for what it supports , not all components can be used.
  12. I think you can use Mcafee (it has a feature called epo server), this server gets the updates from internet, and pushes it to the clients.I think you can only use it on the enterprise version. How you have install it I don't know but I have seen it working. You can also do such thing with their firewall , setup the firewall on the server and then copy the settings to the clients, so you don't have to setup them all one by one.Maybe you can find more on their website. In Mcafee you can aslo setup that it updates from a folder on the network, or you can install a proxy serverso that only the first times the updates comes from the internet (I think this will work for most Antivirus programs ).
  13. Most of the times a computer crash because it's to busy doing things that it forget to refresh it's memory or something, then the memory gets corrupted and the computer stops turning his main loop. The real cause is most of the times :- To low on physical memory to perfom the job ask for it.(can also be to many programs running on the computer like spyware and so on).- Bad memory module (can also be temperature dependant).- To low on hard disk space. Most of the times when you reinstall your computer with a fresh windows your problems are solved.(You can also buy an extra harddrive , install the fresh windows on that drive , and keep your old drive for storing data. )Unless it's a hardware issue (only in 5% in the cases).
  14. Maybe something stupid like 'automatic updates ' from windows XP.While they are downloading and installing it slows down the computer also. There maybe also update for windows Media player running. When the computer detects you have broadband it start updating nearly everything these days.
  15. There are many virusses and Spyware on the classic P2P networks. Most of the time you see it on the file size (small files), but it can also be a big file that's infected by a virus. Since no one owns the network, these files will be always there because the people that have these files on their drive haven't every heard of virusses I think. Bittorent is a fast sharing medium and since it's a bit more difficult to use there are less virusses. The only problem you have is that you have to find torrent files to download the content. Bittorent is also frequently used to download (and share) linux distributions (on CD or DVD size).
  16. The best is that you make a backup of your data files.Reinstall windows XP.Install only the programms that you use, the rest not.Don't forget an antivirus program and a firewall.Copy the data back on your hard drive on a sepparate partition.Place the swap file also on a sepparate partition with a fixed size.Make an image with (ghost or acronis , ... ) of both parttions. Now should your computer work faster, because there a less programms on it so it uses less memory. The files are not fragmented any more, your registry is smaller then before, ... The only problem you have is that a few months after you have the same problems as you have now.For speeding up your hard disk the only solution is use a RAID configuration. But it costs a bit more.
  17. The problems with spyware and virussen is that they can make your computer unusable. To protect it you need some programs that are not built-in windows XP.Some examples : Anti spyware, Anti virus , Spam filter , Firewall. When you install all those they take CPU time and make your computer slower. The better they check the slower the computer becommes. So you need to take a compromise between safety and computer speed. When you install a basic firewall and Anti virus programm your computer is safe for 60%.I also make a backup of the system (ghost or an other image program) and a backup of the data. When my computer gets infected I just place the image back on my computer.I think a 100% safe sulution doen't exist , except your computer is not connected to the internet and there is no floppy or CD-rom drive. But then your hard disk may crash and you need also a backup to restore your system. So 1 advise : make from time to time a backup of your system. When your computer is infected you can restore your system easy and fast.
  18. I have never tried it , but some bootmanagers have support from booting from CDROM.So if you just install a boot manager (like XOSL or something). You can install it on your hard drive (most of the time in the Master Boot Record).Your systems starts teh boot manager from the hard drive and then you select booting from CDROM.You install your system from CD , and most of the time the boot manager is gone also.Maybe worth to try if you are in a situation that booting from CD/DVD doesn't work because it's not supported by the BIOS.
  19. Why bother what your password was that you have forgotten. If you can't remember it now , you can't in the future. Just clear the password , resart and setup another one (a more easy to remember). But this only works if your computer isn't connected to a server. If it's connected to a server the password is (normally) stored on the server.
  20. I don't understand why you are using a double NAT (1 from the Prolink and 1 from the Netgear) ?With a double NAT you can have problems with the 2nd router because 10.x.x.x are know as a private IP range, and those IP adresses are normally not routed to the outside. Can't you setup the 2nd router as a WAP (i.s.o. a NAT router ? ).Then every computer should have an ip adress in the range 10.0.0.xxx The 2nd cause for your problem is that the configuration port for your 1st modem/router is setup at 80.Can you change it to an other port, otherwise you have setup your site at another public port, like 1000 or something. Then you can visit your site at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ or http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ adress]:1000
  21. There also exist some linux boot disks that can change (or clear) the admin password. But you can't read out the current password. So if you wan't to use your dad's computer that way, he always knows because the password has changed or is removed. The only safe is Linux , Windows 2003 , or Windows XP connected to a Server. Here those things don't work, if you have forgotten the password you have a big problem. The password security of Windows XP (stand alone) is very low, there are several ways to disable it.
  22. You can disable the check by removing the update you have received (and installed) from windows update. But if you that you may have problems for further updates.I don't know how they find out if your key is legal or illegal.I think they count how many times the key is registered or used. If too many people are using the same key, they may have gotten it from a site on the internet (illegal key),but if you buy a computer with a restore disk in many cases the key is alos on the restore disk and you don't have to enter a new one after the resore. So all the users of that type of computer are using the same key.You can find tools to change the key that is installed on your PC.(I think you only have to change 1 value in the registry.)So you can change your key to the one from the sticker, and register your computer with that key.
  23. Nomaly, if they have setup a WEP , the have also protected the router with a password. (At least I do that everytime). The only thing you can do is then pressing the restore button on the router, but then all connection settings are gone also, that maybe a problem if they use xDSL (where a password is needed to connect). Before you change anything check if you can take a backup of the router data, so you can place the data back original in case of problems.
  24. Normally the resolution of your monitor is based on the form factor like in T.V. sets. The most common for tor is 4:3 the wide screens are mostly 16:9.So the old resolutions of VGA (640x480) , SVGA (800x600) , ... are changed on wide screens.Otherwise your image is not in the correct format. These problems are also getting there with Digital photo's, since the factor is not the same as the classical ones.
  25. Windows can't boot Linux , since both of them are Operating systems. You can only select an operating system at boot time, by the BIOS settings or a Bootmanager. You can have several parttions on your (external) hard drive. But if you can you should place the boot partittion in the begin.Since there may be problems when they get over ceratin limits.Booting from an external hard drive can , but have to supported by your bios.In some cases you can even boot from a memory stick. If all that doesn't work , you can always use a live distribution of linux (like Knoppix , ... ).They even exisist on DVD, they have a lot of software on it and only some settings will be save on your hard drive, I think that latest version there is even USB support for extranal harddrives and memory sticks.Support for NTFS is not completly there (most of the time reading works , but writing have some problems).
