    All About Networking

Coax has only 1 advantage you easy add an extra computer in the network. There are several disadvantages :Coax cable is more expensive then UTP cable. It's harder to make a coax cable then an UTP cable. With coax you need some T connectors and terminators. With coax if the cable is bad, the entire network is down. The max speed of coax is 10 BaseT or (10 Mbit/s).So if you are making a new network you should use UTP (100 Mbit or 1Gbit).You cn do this with UTP cable Cat 5 (or higher) and 1 (or more) Switches.Fibre optics is only used for long distances and is far more expensive then UTP.
  2. There is already a version 5 of Knoppix, But I can't simulate your problem since all my drives are built-in.Are you booting knoppix from a built-in CD/DVD drive ?
  3. You can use Joomla here. There are several CMS pakkets you can install with Fantastico. They are easy to setup , you just need a manual to add some content. For testing you can also install something like xampp on your computer.Install the CMS pakket like described above, and test something before you put it online. You can also sync both sites , so you have a backup if something goes wrong.
  4. A small router will only protect against incoming messages. Since it's using NAT, if you make an outgoing connection the NAT table is updated. And the router made a way to your computer. So it's safer then a direct connection to the internet, but not completly safe. For a firewall you could try Sygate , you can download it at the site http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Recently Symantec has bought the pakket , so there will be no newer versions available of this pakket.
  5. When your computer is only 1 year old , you don't have to change everything if it's a selfbuilt one.In a selfbuilt computer you can change only the parts that are outdated.Like CPU and mainbord and RAM.The parts of the old computer can be placed in a cheap case with a smaller Hard drive.Trough a local network you can use some thing from the other computer like DVD burner, ... For games you can make an image of the CD/DVD and place it on the hard drive. And then you run a CD/DVD drive emulator, works most of the time faster the nthe orginal CD/DVD drive.Since your hard drive is faster and doesn't have a spinup time of seconds.
  6. It's the same with PE builder you need an official version of Windows to be legal. But if you use the same as your installed version and only use it in case of emergency,it won't be a problem I think. But if you use on more then 1 computer, you may need a 2nd license.
  7. You can make a windows live CD with the program http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ but I don't know if such CD is workable , in case of emergency it should work fine. But I think windows is best installed on your hard disk. I've never used it, maybe you could try ....
  8. Dual monitor is not that hard to install. You click on your desktop and choose 'Properties'In the tab most right ( should be settings I think). You should see an image with 2 monitors. You click with you mouse on the first monitor and you can setup the colors , resolution, ...Now you click on the 2nd monitor and you can setup the 2ndIf thats done you can move the 2nd on the left if you want by dragging it to the left. There is an option Identify the monitor ....When you click extend desktop you should get an image on both monitors.
  9. The prices of the CPU are still going down , if you look at the links above and compair them with the current nearly everthing is cheaper. At the moment I should use a Intel Core Duo and not an AMD.They work fine and consume less power then previous Pentium D - series.Intel has at the moment some advantages , maybe in few months it will be AMD again.
  10. Watch out when the CPU get's a temp that's that high it could heat up some other components that are close to the CPU , like memory, HDD, Chipset on the main board , ... It's possible that they can't handle those temperatures and will fail to work. Also watch out for the air that goes into the powersupply if that's to hot the P.S. will fail as well. The best is leave everything at normal temperatures, and cool the system as good as possible.
  11. Another option is removing the card from your computer.Remove the drives from your computer.Reboot the computer.Look if everthing is removed (and the reboot shoud have synced the drivers).Shutdown the computer.Install the card back in the computer (if needed in another slot).Start the computer again, normaly you should have a box new hardware detected. Here you can do 2 things :Install the drivers provided with your card (maybe the best if available).Or install the drivers from Microsoft (use these only if the others don't work or are not available).Note :You can search on the site of your card manufacturer if there are newer drivers available.Normally with sound blaster cards there are few problems or there may be a conflict with another card.Or a sound card built-in on the mainboard.
  12. I think remote access is default not turned on on most routers. And if it is , mostly your IP adress changes each team you (re) connect to the internet. So this problem is not that big.The biggest problem is that people buy a wireless router , connect it and notice that it works. They leave everything default and think they are secure.Everyone (mosly neigbours) can access their network on the wireless side. And even do some configurations in their router. So the best is 'disable' the wireless access if you don't need it.Otherwise :Change the channel ID, SSID.Turnoff the broadcast of the SSID.Implement a MAC filter.Implement an encryption (like WEP, ... )Be aware when your wireless connected first to change the router and then your PC.Cross your fingers that you can connect again ....
  13. Within WinRAR there is a feature to repair RAR files. If they are severly damaged you need some repairblocks to repair the archive.(is usefull when you use multi part RAR files).Another program that can do the job is QuickPAR (freeware). Here can the sender make some repair blocks with the original file.On the reciever side you can check if your file is not damaged and it says howmany blocks it need for repair. When the sender sends you the blocks (i.s.o. the whole file) you can fix your file. This works easy and if you already have 2 versions of the file maybe you can get a correct version when you add the 2 files. The only thing you need to start is the program and some blocks from the sender.Normally a firewall can only filter some IP packets (and it deletes the whole pakket).Damaged files can be caused by some (bit)faults on your internet access.(like phone line , DSL line or Cable). You notice this problem the best when you download big files. In unix world they add often and .md5 check file by the big iso file. This md5 file can also be checked with Quickpar.
  14. 4-4-4-12 are the memory timeings (or speed) (also CAS latency named).Example of a kingston kit :KHX6400D2LLK2/1GN 1 GB kit 800 MHz DDR2 Low Latency CL4 (4-4-4-12) DIMM 800 MHz is the bus speed of the moduleAnd CL4 (4-4-4-12) is the CAS latency of the module.
  15. Another option for an external storage is using a NAS (Network attached Storage). Then all your computers in your network can use the storage. The only disadvantage is that it's hard to use on different sites. It works fine in your home LAN.You can also make a NAS with an old computer , 2 or 3 hard drives and the pakket freeNAS.With that pakket you can even make a software RAID between the hard drives. The cheapest and the simplest will be an external USB (or Firewire) drive. If your computer has a Firewire connection, an external drive that supports both USB and firewire will be usefull. Firewire is still a lot faster then USB2, and most of the times all the USB are used.
  16. This is a part 'Paint shop Pro' there is a trial version available (of 30 days I think). I used to use this program for making aniamted Gifs (works fine). You can add an gif image (and setup also the time to display). You can also add some (predefined) transittions. The program used to by Jasc, but I think Corel has bought the program and Corel sells it now. There are still some shareware sites on the internet where you can download the programm.
  17. Strange you have to work with differnt IP adresses.Normally it should work with domain names as well, since you can make different (dynamic) domain names. And host them to different site. The nyou have the same ip adress, because you get only 1 IP adress from the internet.Have you setup the server name in each block, I think you may no specify the server name in each block.Maybe I'll try it out and let you know.
  18. If you want to use 'dual channel RAM' configuration. You need at 2 RAM pieces. These 2 pieces need to work together and need to be of the same brand and type (and also size). You can also buy some paired modules (modules made from the same set of memory chips).Mostly 'Dual channel memory' will speed up your system. So you have to choose between 1GB (2x 512M) or 2G (2x 1GB).
  19. The best thing you can do if your computer is still fast is making a diskimage (with Norton Ghost or Acronis Disk image) and burn it on a DVD or CD. Most of the time your computer will get slower in a few months. Since you install (and remove) some things on it. Some reasons why Windows is getting slow after a while : - The storage of some temporary files (like IE , Windows , ... ). - Fragmented swap file - Big size of the registry file. - Infection with spyware. Some of the things can be cleaned with Ccleaner /ccleaner It's a free program and clears most of the (useless) chache files. For the Spyware you could use some free programs to clean it.
  20. Also here , CRT monitors are out of date.(They can be bought for a cheap price but don't have the quality of a good LCD).Only if you are playing (shoot and kill) games you need a fast response time (2ms).These days almost all LCD monitors have 8ms or lower response time.In the early days they were a lot slower. For office and home use almost anything will do, next you have the choise between 17" , 19" or higher. The best in price/quality is 19" I think , 17" is getting small.Another choice you have is the ratio 4/3 or 16/9.If you want to watch TV or DVD on your PC the best is 16/9 (or the wide screens). For games I don't know the older games are all in 4/3, for Office applications they both will do.
  21. You just need to add 1 block per (local) domain you want to host. So it must be something like this I think. eachblock can be linked to a different domain , when you add the asterisk it means that the domain was not found in the above. Well overhere it's noon (11:26 am) <VirtualHost ghma.test:80> DocumentRoot C:/apache/xampp/gmha ServerName gmha.test</VirtualHost><VirtualHost localhost:80> DocumentRoot C:/apache/xampp/ ServerName gmha.test</VirtualHost><VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot C:/apache/xampp/gmha ServerName gmha.test</VirtualHost>
  22. In your file httpd.conf you need to setup : <VirtualHost ghma.test:80> DocumentRoot C:/apache/xampp/gmha/ ServerName gmha.test</VirtualHost> Watch because in Windows XP everything is case sensitive, in Windows 98 you may have to use capital letters because before Windows XP everything was DOS based . Alternative : <VirtualHost ghma.test:80> DocumentRoot C:/APACHE/XAMPP/GHMA/ ServerName gmha.test</VirtualHost>

    Share Internet

The first thing you need to do is connecting both PC with each other. Depending on your internet connection : It can be a router (or wireless router) if you have a broadband connection (xDSL or Cable). When you are using dialup the best is connecting the 2 PC with an ethernet cross cable (both PC's need an ethernet card if not built-in). If both PC's are connected you have to install an internet sharing program, This can be the free ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) of Windows or an other vendor program. Some examples are : Wingate , Lansuite 2004 (free but hard to setup) , ... If you are using a sepparate PC for the router job you can use a linux pakket. Some examples are : Freesco (http://www.freesco.org/) IPCOP (http://www.ipop.org/), Smoothwall (http://www.smoothwall.org/) 2 more based on freebsd : m0n0wall (index.php) pfsense Fli4l (http://www.fli4l.de/) works also but has a text based setup. These pakkets have a web based setup and they are free to use and they work on an old computer with not that much hardware. They even work an a P1 computer and some don't even need a hard disk (like freesco and fli4l). The other pakkets can be installed on a small harddisk ( 700 MB or higher ).
  24. That will be a problem I think, because Windows XP uses also the machine ID in the encryption. Do you have a drive image of your previous windows install, if you have that restore it on (another disk). Place your current disk as slave together with the new disk, and then it could work. Before reďnstallation you should have made a backup of your encryption key (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/241201) Most likely it will be a 128 bit key (or more) , so it takes a few 100 years to crack it.
  25. Finding a Dual video card can't be that hard, even a low budget Asus A9550 can handle 2 screens.(Note : it's an AGP card)On the board you find a (orginal) VGA connector and a DVI connector. There is even a convertor deleverd from DVI to VGA (15 SUBD).Not all cards with a DVI and a VGA conenctor can handle 2 monitors. Are you searching for an AGP card or an PCI express card ?
