Nice to meet you Ryan , but one question ... how do you plan on getting into these companies? I mean, isn't it a little difficult to get into Valve, EA, blizzard?

For the love of God, mesmer, will you please remove that silly animated gif in your sig? It's making my whole system slow down ... let alone my browser. What's the idea putting such a big animated gif in your sig?

Does it matter? If it's working, don't fix it. If you're thinking of changing antiviruses, let me tell you that the antivirus is useful only if you keep it updated regularly and run periodic checks. Besides, a lot depends on how you use your system. An antivirus is mostly a preference. Coming to your question, I would say Norton is one of the 'good' antiviruses. I haven't come across an antivirus that I would say is the best. Myself, I use PC-Cillin 2002 which came bundled along with my motherboard. I was using NAV 2005, but there's some virus in my campus network which eats aways Norton. And besides, Norton was taking up too much memory. Kaspersky is another of the good antiviruses, but it's realtime monitor can bring your system to it's knees.

Hmm... I guess you're right. I've installed the binary package for linux and for some reason sometimes when I start it, it gives me a popup saying 'chrome' has been disabled. I click on 'ok' and firefox starts as normal. Any idea what that means?

Happy Birthday Opaque . Wish you all the best in life and hope you have a wonderful birthday. -
Hi Jerry :)Yup, you've come to the right place. But a word of advice, you have to give something back to the community in exchange for quality webhosting or in other words, make quality posts in the forum. This is a tech forum, so make sure you make long and informative posts. One liners are not at all welcome.Welcome to Xisto and hope you have a great time.Cheers.

Downloaded and installed on my Gentoo a few hours ago.... looks great so far . Some extensions aren't working, but maybe they have some follow up which does, haven't checked up on the website. Is it just me, or is the startup time less?

A Need For Content Management System Design of a CMS
abhiram replied to Vyoma's topic in Websites and Web Designing
There is a thread somewhere in the forums which explains how to develop your own CMS. It's actually a matter of first framing a layout that you like, for example: <?include 'basic.php';?><html><head><title><?mytitle();?></title></head><body><!-- Insert Header code here --><?include 'header.php';?><!-- Insert menu code here --><?include 'menu.php';?><!-- Insert Navbar code here --><?include 'navbar.php';?><!-- Insert Content code here --><?include 'content.php';?><!-- Insert footer content here --><?include 'footer.php';?></body></html> and then customising each of the other pieces in your design like footer.php, menu.php and so on. You can go one step further and develop a frontend for this (say admin.php) which will allow you to login and then open each of the codes in a text box for easy editing. That's just about the basics for a CMS. I would say actual CMS packages are much more complex. -
I can't use ftp from behind my campus firewall. Actually, I was trying to upload net2ftp which is an ftp manager using php, and I had to upload it bit by bit. Also, what if I need to restore a backup of my entire website. The size of the backup is around 25 mb. About hosting files, these are files related to our website ... we are not uploading mp3s and videos. I have some images for my gallery which are bigger than 2mb and can't upload them as they are.

Astahost Instable.. now my database is gone
abhiram replied to ruben1405241511's topic in Web Hosting Support
Looks like you chose the wrong time to get hosted at Xisto ruben . My guess is that the server shift isn't completely bug-proof yet. It might take some more time to stabilise. Myself, I never had any problems of any sort with my hosting. Of course, I haven't used it much until recently and it doesn't really attract too much audience, but it was always up whenver I checked. -
I had a problem of the same kind once. I can't ftp to my site as I'm behind my campus firewall. I can only use net2ftp or some other php utility to upload. I mean, 2mb is just ridiculous .... can't this be increased to atleast 10mb? Nowadays, almost all email providers provide atleast 10mb attachment size. Can't the php.ini file be edited to take care of this?

Suggestions For The Forum May increase member interactions
abhiram replied to Vyoma's topic in Web Hosting Support
It's a great idea, but how will it be moderated? I mean, if somebody does the work but isn't paid the credits he asked for, how will it be resolved? One way might be to let the system automatically transfer the credits through a script. But what if the person (the customer) isn't satisfied with the work? He definitely wouldn't want to pay then right?I really like this idea, but what are the things it will cater to? I mean, we don't want to start a warez exchange here right? Sigs and graphics are fine, but we don't want it to get out of hand. -
Mods, please correct the above post ... Link: http://www.lf2.net/.

For total action and fun, Little Fighter 2 is the way to go. My avatar itself is one of the characters (my favorite one 'Davis') in LF2. It's a way cool game, free to download from http://www.littlefighter2.com/rg-erdr.php?_rpo=t and can be played by four people simultaneously on a single keyboard. Been playing that game for over 3 years now.

A 'gimp' Sig Need feedback and some help ....
abhiram replied to abhiram's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
Hi Reaver , thanks for the tips. Using my limited exposure to gimp, I've changed the sig to some extent basing on your feedback. I've reduced the size of the sig to 400x140. Here: In this one, I've removed the render and just kept the background and applied a small (but noticeable, I think) effect to the text which adds a shadow and a twist and a pattern overlay. Here, I've tried to blend in the render with a blur, but ended up just fading it out. Moved the render to the center and left the text as it is in the previous one. But, seriously, the background does look better without sonic in it. Ironic. Is the sig any better now? -
A 'gimp' Sig Need feedback and some help ....
abhiram replied to abhiram's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
Thanks m^e, but you're too kind ... that kind of 'happened' while I was doing a pixel stretch for the background and then playing around with the filters. The minute I look at my sig and somebody else's (read s-m, reaver) it looks amateurish. -
A 'gimp' Sig Need feedback and some help ....
abhiram posted a topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
I don't know why, but these days, I've started taking a liking towards the gimp. Ever since I installed gentoo on my system, I absolutely abhor booting into windows. In fact, I haven't even logged into windows for the past 3 weeks. After getting Photoshop 6 running using wine in Linux (the other versions wouldn't even install) and having a lot of stability issues with it I've started getting the hang of the Gimp. But, there are a lot of features that I'm having trouble with. Let me show you what I mean... here's a sig I made using gimp: First of all, I'm not really artistically talented, and as you can see, all my sigs are quite amateurish. But, I'm learning and recently got the hang of using fractal brushes to make sigs. With that out of the way, here are some questions I need some help with: 1. What do you guys think about this sig? Rating, criticism (good, bad, anything goes), tips and suggestions would be a big help. 2. Can any experienced user in gimp explain to me how to add the blending options like glow, bevel and emboss (that are so easy to apply in photoshop) to a single layer (such as any text on the sig) without affecting the other layers? Till now, I've been had to create the text in a new file, apply the desired script-fu and then merge the layers in the new file and then copy past the text into the original file. Now, this isn't too much fun if I've got to try out different kinds of script-fu and keep repeating this laborious process. 3. Finally, I've got the layer-effects plugin from the gimp repository, which supposedly is supposed to imitate 'blending options' in photoshop. But, it isn't working like it's supposed to ... the decorations and shadows show up wherever they want to and sometimes they don't even show up at all. Has anyone got that plugin to work? This is kind of a long post, but it's these small things that have been driving me crazy for the past few days. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks . -

Is It Me Or Something Is Wrong.. Trap17.net Vs....
abhiram replied to xboxrulz1405241485's topic in Web Hosting Support
No ads is what I'd prefer the most, after bandwidth, but before web space. Right now, for my requirements, 150MB is a lot. I don't need any more than that, and I definitely don't want ads on my webpage. I just can't stand them, google-ads or any banner for that matter. IMO, it's fine just the way it is.
