  1. I'm looking for link back buttons to put on my homepage for Xisto, gentoo, gimp and so on. If you scroll down this page, you will see a small gif image by a tracker called OneStat. I'm looking for buttons like that. Is there any site where I can download them for use or do I have to make my own? In case you can't see what I'm talking about, here's a screenshot:
  2. Ah ... good to know there's another feature now on gmail. Initially, when I started using gmail, I was a bit wary about it. But, as they kept improving it and adding more and more features, it's now my main account .
  3. I think a print button will be cool. But, instead of trying to divide the entire code into 3 sections, maybe it'll be easier to just write another 'print.php' and copy the stuff that makes the table into it and pass the variables that are required to print it. That way, I won't have to bother about readjusting the code in the main page and can have it print whatever I want in anyway I want. This will give me more flexibility in changing the final look of the print page. This way I've got the print page working out ok. But have to start working on the logging script. Here are links to the main script and the print page. The main page is just the part of the script which displays the form and the table. I've seperated the entire app into different parts as 'adminmain.php', 'adminprofile.php' and so on. 'admin.php' is the main file into which the other files are 'included'. Be warned that I've made a complete mess of the variables and I've used both global variables and non-global variables also. Right now, I'm not emphasising on 'clean' code.... if it works, that'll do. This is the first time I'm making an app this big all on my own.
  4. Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I was a bit busy with my projects and stuff. That's a pretty neat idea. The form on the top queries the database each time. So, in effect, I think I just need to include a link on the top or bottom of the page which will pass the same query to another page without the form on the top. All that the form does is select who or what results you want to see. You can select entries according to the hostel, room no., preferred caterer and so on. And whenever you submit the form, the server queries the results and displays them according to the paging constraint, that is, number of rows to be shown in each page. Each time the page is refreshed or anything, the required rows are queried again. I'll have to work on this over the weekend, it's due to be in proper working condition by monday. I'd post the code, but it's in too much of a mess because of the search form on the top. I'll use your code and see how it works out. I just need to maintain a log of all the people who are logging into the admin page and what changes are they making. In fact, maybe I don't even need to store the queries that are being viewed ... maybe only queries which result in a change of a student's profile will be needed. Thanks a lot Vujsa . Btw, how much of a load do 4 extra queries add to the server? Since the admin page will be used by at most a 2-3 people at a time, it shouldn't be too much. The students page will need to allow around 4000 students to register, so I think I better not log their activities.
  5. Hehe ... reminds me of the Sardarji jokes in India. I'll bet this can be easily ported to any character .
  6. Hey ... that's a grand idea. I didn't even think of the need to log all the database queries. I guess it'll be required in the event of any abuse right? I'll look into it. But, maybe, instead of a database query log, isn't a database of people logging in sufficient? I mean, just note down who is logging in at what time?A printer friendly page sounds great. I wonder why I didn't think about that. I think I can create a link to output the same details as the person is viewing to a new window which can then be printed. Thanks a lot Vujsa .Btw, the form on the top is for filtering out the results. There is an edit button on the side which will enable the administrative section to edit the details of any student.
  7. I've been designing an online registration page for my univ. The adminstrative section is going to take care of the registration and they've asked me if I could incorporate a PRINT link on the page which displays the details of the students so that they can take a printout directly of just the table and not the extra links and decorations on the page without having to copy the whole thing into excel or something. Does anyone have any ideas of how to do this? To make myself more clear, here's a screenshot of the admin page: I want a printout of just the table and not of the form or links present at the top. And it should be as easy as clicking a link. Any ideas? Any links will also be appreciated. Thanks.
  8. You mean, you still run SuSE on an Apple machine? Or do you have another system just for linux?
  9. This is priceless ... I'm gonna forward this to all my friends. Now I know that cooking oil is non-conductive .
  10. Wow ... with so many people raving about it, I guess I'll just have to reboot into windows to play this game . Downloading it now, thanks for the link.
  11. Actually, it isn't possible to delete all of your posts. I'm not an admin either, but your account may be deleted, but not your posts. This is to maintain continuity in the threads.
  12. Oh ok. That's news to me. I didn't know SuSE had a server edition as well. Maybe I should try it out when I have time.
  13. Hehe, that's a good idea. Just keep taking the test again and again until your favorite distro shows up .
  14. Hey Nightfox, nice to see you taking the plunge . It sure is a good thing you didn't give Linux up just because you didn't like SuSE. A lot of people give up linux (in favor of windows of course) just because they had a bad experience with one distro. With so many distros available, you can always find a distro that is best suited for your tastes. I've seen XandrOS in action on a friend's system. It's pretty cool. Quick to install, good to look at and easy to use. Only drawback is it isn't free .But I'm kinda surprised that SuSE was giving you trouble. I've never used SuSE, but from the way some people rave about it kinda made me feel that it was one of the good ones. But still, it depends on your taste. After all, there are so many people who still prefer RedHat and Fedora to anything else .
  15. This stuff doesn't make any sense. What are you trying to prove? I mean, 1/3*3=1 ... end of story, finito. If you had proved 1=2 then maybe you would have been appreciated for your witticism (is that spelled right?), but 0.999999.... = 1 ?!!
  16. Gimp has support for PSD files. I could save an image as a PSD file and then open it in Photoshop to slice it up for a web template. You can get it from here.
  17. This test is fairly accurate. I took the test and it gave me Arch, gentoo and slackware. Gentoo and Slack are my favorite distros but, I don't understand why Arch is in the list. I've tried to help a couple of friends with Arch, but it just doesn't have the feel of neither gentoo nor slackware.
  18. 2000$ OMG!!! Now, I really don't know much about the cost of regular computers in the US, but isn't 2000$ a bit on the higher side? What is the range of a regular desktop (say Intel) assembled from parts? 1000-1500$?
  19. I'm just guessing that you've been at this thing the whole day. Is the present installation that important that you can't lose it? I mean, in my experience with WindowsXP, there are many instances where it's easier to just re-install windows than try to troubleshoot the damn thing. A complete reinstall probably wouldn't take more than 45min and you just need to backup the 'My Documents', the 'Desktop' folders and any other you've got in the root directory.
  20. Wow ... don't you just wish you had 200$ ? Maybe you could compromise somewhere, like take 512MB RAM and a 120GB HDD? Or maybe a RAM and DVD-ReWriter? Since the RAM is important for your project, maybe you should take that for sure.
  21. Is that partition FAT32? You could probably get a Linux liveCD, mount it and delete it through that. If it's NTFS, it won't work because there's no write access in NTFS.But just one question ... did you login with the super-admin? That is, the username 'Administrator' for which you set the password during installation?
  22. Try to login as administrator and then try to delete it.
  23. This is a common problem in Windows XP and I'm sure it's been discussed somewhere already. Just follow these steps: 1. start>run and type 'cmd' and press enter. A command shell window will open. 2. ctrl+alt+del and kill 'explorer.exe'. This will kill the desktop and start menu. 3. In the command shell, type "rmdir 'c:\documents and settings\<whteverfoldername>'". (Note that the entire path of the folder should be enclosed in double quotes and not single quotes. This is because there are spaces in the name of the folder.) 4. In the task manager, select process>run and enter 'explorer.exe'. The startmenu and desktop will be activated again. That should remove the entire folder. I haven't exactly used the rmdir command. You can get more info about it at this link.
  24. LOL... Welcome to Xisto kimozana. Glad to see another tech-savvy addition to our family at Xisto . Some small advice ... look up the rules and faq before you post. They'll save you a lot of trouble later on. It's very easy to keep up your credits by contributing whatever you can to the forum. Hope you have a nice time.
  25. Hey hassviper, Glad to have you aboard. Make sure that you read the FAQ and the Rules regarding the 'posting for hosting'. You could get into unnecessary hassles without them. Also, glad to know that you're comfortable with forums. Feel free to ping any of us if you have any problems.PS: Did you perchance happen to read "The Catcher in the Rye" by "J D Salinger"? Your posts kinda reminded me of this book .
